In the early 1990's, Tim League spent $50,000 in savings to lease an abandoned movie theater on the wrong side of the tracks—a shaky experiment that eventually grew into a thriving national chain. As Tim and his wife Karrie built theaters in Austin and beyond, they made a name for themselves by offering dinner with the movie, creative pairings (like sake with Godzilla), and roadshows where movie-goers could watch Deliverance in canoes, or Rocky on the famous steps in Philly. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema now has 40 locations across the country and a revenue of over $300 million, but there have been plenty of bruises along the way: a failed first theater, a fractious lawsuit with business partners, and a swan dive into the red during the pandemic. This episode was produced by Carla Esteves, with music by Ramtin ArabloueiEdited by Neva Grant, with research help from Carla Esteves. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In this week's Flightless Bird, David Farrier sets out to understand how Americans interact with movies. Motivated by watching Nicole Kidman's heartfelt introduction before every movie at the AMC theater chain, Farrier sets out to understand the other big chains like Regal. How are these chains enticing people in the door? He finds that AMC has the Stubs A-List, and Regal has Regal Unlimited. Then Farrier talks to Stacy Spikes, the founder and brains behind MoviePass - a subscription service he started, then was kicked out of, then bought back again. Stacy's new venture is rumored to monitor where your eyes are looking to see if you're watching ads or not, prompting Farrier to ask “What?!” David also wants to understand how the smaller indie chains are competing and ends up talking to Tim League who started the Alamo Drafthouse chain. He talks about movie showmanship and muses on the state of the industry right now.
The movie industry's recovery from a worldwide pandemic is far from complete. Theaters have been forced to innovate and invest back in the basics, such as picture quality, sound, seats and food and beverage. Tim League, Founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, sees the improvement of the baseline experience as the best way to ensure habitual movie-going and joins this podcast with Wim and Jim to discuss cinema and how Alamo Drafthouse makes the theater experience unique.
On this 32nd episode of BoomATX Glenn sits down with Damon Jones who has been working hard to Keep Austin Weird by bringing a restored 100-year-old carousel to town for both kid and adult enjoyment and having unbelievably good luck! Cutting his teeth in the event world spearheading Alamo Draft House's Fantastic Fest, Damon is now looking to bring a one-of-a-kind, only-in-Austin event venue, The Magistery, that hopes to combine the enjoyment of an epic Austin flavored carousel plus live music, food and beverage as well as potentially a restored vintage Chuck-E-Cheese animatronic band….. That's right, a guy bringing a carousel back to life in Austin is an incredible story but throw in quite possibly the most random and unbelievable side story in BoomATX history that involves animal rodents, Alamo Draft House founder Tim League and History Channel Secret Renovation reality show and we think we have an episode you don't want to miss.

When Kara Swisher wrote a column declaring her love for Vin Diesel and predicting that we will not be returning to movie theaters, Tim League felt sorry for her. He's the founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, a luxury movie theater chain that opened in Austin over 20 years ago and has since expanded nationally. The pandemic has not been kind to the company, which he notes was in “dire” condition by December and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year. But League still remains bullish about his industry and the value of the theater experience. In this conversation, Swisher and League debate whether the rise of streaming giants means the end of cinemas, big and small. They also discuss the challenge of hiring and retaining workers, pushed release dates for movies like “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” and whether a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon would buy a theater chain like Alamo. Mostly, though, they agree to disagree. For the 12th and last episode for this season we talk in-depth to Lisa Petrucci, the heart and soul of Something Weird Video, which pioneered the re-release of cult and genre films. SWV was founded in 1990 in Seattle, Washington state by Mike Vraney, who was a projectionist and collector of 8mm and 16mm girlie loops and films. He started transferring and sharing some of these films to VHS, which earned him a call from David F. Friedman and a lesson in copyright. Thus Mike the film enthusiast/pirate became a legitimate film distributor, publishing the works of directors such as Harry Novak, Doris Wishman, Herschell Gordon Lewis and Friedman himself. The name comes from HGL's 1967 film "Something Weird". Petrucci tells us about her background as an artist and collector, moving from Boston to New York ("where I went down a rabbit hole at Kim's Videos") to Los Angeles and eventually to Seattle ("which was like going to Mars,"), completing her journey from high brow to popular and low-brow culture. She recalls how she first met Mike at the Chiller Convention, and how they started working together, until they became a couple and soul mates. Lisa picks her favourite films (tough choice!), including "Monsters Crash the Pajama Party" (1965, coming to Cultpix soon), "She Freak" (1967), "Shanty Tramp" (1967), "Psychedelic Sex Kicks" (1967) and "Wild Hippie Party" (1967), "Teaserama" (1965, also coming to Cultpix soon). Lisa discusses how some of these films can be 'problematic' viewing today, but that they are 'time capsules' of their era. But with cinema screenings of their films you have to think ahead to see if something in the films will offend somebody, "which they will, because Something Weird was set up to be abrasive."Lisa and Smut Pedler discuss how Mike overcame his reluctance to travel to come to Sweden twice and how it led to the birth of Klubb Super 8, which in turn led to Cultpix. How Mike could be demanding, but forced KS8 to "get its shit together." Mike was then diagnosed with lung cancer and Lisa talks movingly about making the most of his last year and days. After Mike's passing Lisa and SWV was lucky to get contacted by Alamo Drafthouse and how Tim League and AGFA - American Genre Film Archive stepped in with a proposal to represent some of the titles. Today SWV has switched to DVD-R distribution, as well as partnering streamers such as Cultpix, Nightflight and The Film Detective. And we finish by revealing who the new 40 Thieves of cult film are. This the 12th episode marks the end of the first season of Cultpix Radio WCPX 66.6 as we take a brief summer break, but we will be back in late summer/early autumn with more films, guests and banter about our favourite films. Drop us a line at info@cultpix.com with comments and suggestions. Have a great summer and stay cult! #WeAreCultpix
Movie theaters are starting to reopen, and moviegoers are starting to return. All eight of the Laemmle’s theaters are now reopened, its Glendale location the last to do so a couple weeks ago. Tickets are now on sale for the first time in a year at American Cinematheque theaters, which announced programs at all its theaters, including the Rialto in South Pasadena. Last weekend, “A Quiet Place: Part II” opened with very strong box office grosses. And one of the locations that sold a lot of tickets for the sequel was the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown Los Angeles. The Texas-based boutique chain filed for bankruptcy reorganization in early March. Unlike the Arclight and Pacfic theaters, Alamo was able to come back quickly with many of its theaters reopening in May. KPCC’s John Horn called up Tim League, Alamo’s founder and executive chairman, to talk about his circuit’s return, the future of moviegoing in a streaming era, and whether or not Alamo might be a buyer of the closed Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. With contributions from John Horn Guest: Tim League, founder and executive chairman of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
Cultpix Radio features its first guest, who pics his favourite films from the AGFA collection available on Cultpix, as well as highs and lows of the past week, new films and Car-nage film theme on what is now the #1 podcast for Film & TV History... in Sweden. This week: the Cultpix platform keeps getting more stable as tech issues are fixed and more people are invited to join, while we clear a Stripe hurdle. New films include the long 'lost' Calvin Floyd horror The Sleep of Death (1981), Girls in Chains (1943), children-are-truly-evil horror The Horrible House on the Hill (1974) and The Klansman (also 1974) that Rickard Burton and Lee Marvin were too drunk to remember shooting together, as well as a Belgian (!) cult film Impulsion/Gisèle/Embrace (1969) that predates the official The Story of O adaptation. The first guest to feature on Cultpix Radio - WCPX 66.6 is Joe Ziemba of AGFA - American Genre Film Archive, the non-profit organisation that has been working tirelessly to unearth, restore and bring back forgotten cult classics to the big screen, much of this in partnership with its sister company Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas. You can find many of AGFA's best films in Cultpix. We get to know AGFA and the work that Joe and his amazing team have been doing. Films discussed include:Another Son of Sam (1977) - The film from "the outer reaches of madness" that has nothing to do with Son of Sam, about a killer on campus. Shot in Florida; which explains a lot;Bat Pussy (1973) - the film that cannot be unseen, once watched, now can Warner Bros and DC's lawyers stop it. Also the film that got Tim League and Alamo into hot water; The Soultangler (1987) - One Video Vortex Series, described as 'Reanimator made on Long Island for the price of a used car.';The Sword and the Claw/Kiliç Aslan (1975) - Featuring the lead of the Turkish Star Wars (!) this is a good introduction into the strange world of Turkish action/exploitation/sensational films;Lady Street Fighter (1981) - Worth watching for actor-writer-producer Renee Harmon, one of the most unique women in exploitation cinema. She made films on her terms. We finish with music by Taken By Savages.
What is happening friends?! Your favorite podcast, festivalPass Stories is back with another high-profile interview. If you haven't heard, the last couple of weeks have been a great sign for film. This can only mean one thing: the movies are coming back! And we have the perfect guest to break it all down for you. Let's welcome the founder and CEO of Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, Tim League and Shelli Taylor. Since lockdowns and closures began around March of “the year that shall not be named,” our sources of entertainment dwindled to only what can be enjoyed in the comforts of one's home. The popularity of streaming was already rising, and with Covid-19 shutting down most businesses, these numbers have exploded. Fast forward to present day, and there are “1000 services'' to choose from as our host, Pat Tully puts it. Taking away nothing from sites like HBOMax, Disney+ and Netflix, but the FPS audience is all about live events. Going to the movies will always be a magical experience, and none really do the movies quite like Alamo Brewhouse Cinemas. This isn't your regular multiplex. Alamo is all the things that we sorely miss about going to the movies, but turned all the way up to 11. Tim's vision started with just one screen. Now, Alamo is one of the best movie theaters in the country according to some of the biggest entertainment news publications. Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas offer a wide variety of local craft beers wherever you visit. Also, their exquisite chefs construct new menus that are influenced by the films that are being shown, like the African cuisine that was served during Marvel's “Black Panther”. If you're a movie buff, you will adore this place. Even if you're not ready to get back to the movies just yet, you can still support the arts by going to their website and checking out Alamo On Demand, and purchasing some of their exclusive merchandise. It's a travesty that theaters aren't packed for some of the latest blockbusters like “Kong vs. Godzilla'', or the top of Tim's list, “Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar”, but that's just our reality at the moment. With the massive stoppage, you have to think about the people's lives that have been affected, and that has been Tim and Shelli's focus. They've done so much for their community, their employees, and customers during the pandemic that you can only root for them to get back on top. Their passion for the movies is inspiring, and relatable to all of us here at Festival Pass. We're only a few weeks away until the Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas in Brooklyn reopens its doors for the first time in a long time. This episode will give you a detailed look into the great things being done by Shelli and Tim, including bringing back the cast to a few classics, and FPS's very first trivia segment. Tune in for more info on the May 7th opening, and to see who takes the movie trivia crown. “I'm not out to necessarily reinvent the experience. Bright picture, crisp sound, great stories, the lights go down, and you just lose yourself in the movie. Then you share that experience with your friend, and you get goosebumps after having it wash over you.” - Tim League (Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas) Catch the interview on Festival Pass Stories! https://festivalpass.com/stories You can find Tim & Shelli on: Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas' Website-https://drafthouse.com/nyc Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas' Twitter-https://twitter.com/alamodrafthouse Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas' Instagram-https://www.instagram.com/drafthouse/ Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas' Facebook-https://www.facebook.com/alamodrafthouse/ Connect with Festival Pass! Special guest Chris Trew is a comedy person based in New Orleans, where he helped “start a comedy scene from scratch” (Vulture). He's performed in over 60 comedy and music festivals across North America and has been seen on NBA.com, Comedy Central, and GQ Magazine. Oh, and he's the father of the internationally known Air Sex Competition! We will ask Chris Trew super provocative questions about the state of comedy in 2021. His possible return to the Air Sex World Tour after being cut short in 2020 due to the Pandemic. Will there be an improv surge post-pandemic? We dive into his passion for HGTV and Pro Wrestling; sometimes, the two cross over, right? Also, he discusses that time Howard Stern eliminated him from America's Got Talent for being too sexually explicit. WTF??
Although the iconic theater chain is currently facing bankruptcy, League is optimistic about the future of his Texas-born business. Listen in the weekend edition of The Brief podcast.www.texastribune.org

I got to chat with Tim about his first job at SHELL OIL and his segue into a small theater/live music venue in Bakersfield, California. Warning: Tim has stories about Korn, and Fugazi. The following is, one again, not a normal podcast. It's a simple conversation between four friends about a truly heinous situation that has continued to unfold around us in ever expanding circles. In the week before Fantastic Fest, we sat down to directly address the situation that had developed with Tim League, Devin Faraci, and Fantastic Fest. We were joined by two good friends and members of the film community and we discussed our feelings, our hopes and our fears for the festival we were all about to attend. Well that festival is over and we thought we'd record a part two of that conversation, especially considering the additional allegations coming to light in other related spheres. This has, after all, hardly been an isolated incident. So that's exactly what we did. We recorded another podcast. It's not our final word on the matter, but for now it is the last time we'll devote an entire podcast to this particular topic. (Knock on wood.) We've said it before and we'll say it again, these are not isolated incidents, but it is an important time for our community to consider how its culture has treated women in general and specifically when they speak up about harassment and assault. When this podcast ends, the conversation won't. And it can't. Huge thanks to Jen Blair (@fakejenblair) and Rafael Ruiz (@RafAntonioRuiz) for joining us today and thanks for listening.
Back in the early days of fandom, you could pretty much count on one hand the number of online sites to get the latest news. Ain't It Cool News was one of those sites. Long before the web was the destination for everything... Harry Knowles and his team were paving the way with scoops and previews of all the pretty genre things. Now, Ain't It Cool (yes, it's still around) is dealing with a staff exodus in the wake of 20-year-old sexual harassment allegations against Knowles. That, plus the news that Devin Faraci went back to work for the Alamo Drafthouse folks after the reveal that he was accused of the same thing, now puts Tim League and Alamo in the cross-hairs.Plus: there was a thing what happened this week. A thing calling itself Star Trek. And you know what? It might not be all bad... but let's talk about it.
If you are a victim or have been affected by sexual assault, you are not alone. You are loved, you are supported, you are believed. The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) has set up a National Sexual Assault Hotline; available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call 1-800-656-4673 For more information, check the RAINN website- https://www.rainn.org/about-national-sexual-assault-telephone-hotline There's been a lot said over the past few weeks about some of the brands that we have traditionally supported on the show, specifically Fantastic Fest and The Alamo Drafthouse. Recently criticism has been focused at Alamo Drafthouse, Fantastic Fest, and Drafthouse founder/C.E.O. Tim League, regarding the firing and rehiring of a Drafthouse employee who had been accused of sexual assault. While we felt it was important to address this controversy and discuss our feelings, we did want to avoid granular exploration of the details. As a matter of fact, several allegations against former Drafthouse associate and AIN'T IT COOL NEWS founder have surfaced even after we first put this episode "on Memorex." The fact of the matter is, beyond the conversation that's being had online and in the media, the most important part of that conversation was happening in Austin, Texas this week, during Fantastic Fest. As we had made the decision to not attend (long before the controversy), this is a conversation that is still being had and is one that we aren't yet privy to. In that vein if the specifics of the controversy interest you, we'd like to direct your attention to the WOMEN IN CASKETS podcast. Friends of the NIGHTHAWKS, Jen and Dawn are the eponymous WOMEN IN CASKETS and they bring their perspective to genre film, episode after episode. This week the WOMEN IN CASKETS crew are front and center at Fantastic Fest, and they're offering a great perspective from the ground level of both the festival and the controversy. However let us make one thing perfectly clear: We do not condone sexual assault under any circumstances, full stop. Meanwhile, the real thrust of this episode is to give due attention to one of the shining lights of Fantastic Fest in years past. Mattie Do is not only remarkable for being the only female genre filmmaker in Laos, nor is she simply the only female filmmaker in Laos, period. Mattie is an effervescent tour de force of personality, who's artistry and passion have treated her well as a filmmaker. She is a major keystone in the building of a film scene in Laos, and has recently begun on the path to a possible Oscar nomination. Variety recently said that Do was regarded as "one of Asia’s hottest new film-making talents." Do's latest film DEAREST SISTER, our topic tonight, played Fantastic Fest 2016. Do's other directed film, CHANTHALY also played Fantastic Fest, as did RIVER- a Laos-set thriller on which Do served as a producer. Following a release on the streaming service SHUDDER in early 2017, DEAREST SISTER was submitted by the country of Laos for consideration in the "Best Foreign Language Film" category at the Academy Awards. This is the first Lao submission in the country's history. Full disclosure, Mattie is a friend of the podcast, and when we heard the news that she was being submitted for an Oscar nomination, we knew we'd be getting into an episode on DEAREST SISTER, soon enough. While the road to nomination is long and full of pitfalls, and the road to a win even longer, we certainly wish Mattie the best of luck in the coming months. We're very excited to see this film get some recognition

It's the grab-bag to end all grab-bags and a real emotional roller coaster on this week's very loose podcast. The biggest topic this week is something more serious than we usually tackle, and that is the wave of racism in the gaming community (highlighted by PewDiePie's behavior earlier this month) and sexism in the film scene (the scandal involving Devin Faraci, Tim League, Harry Knowles, and more in Austin). It's not an easy thing to talk about, but it is crucial to stop and take a deeper look, to try understanding how we can better identify and talk about these problems in the future, and what we can all do on an individual basis to try to improve the communities we take part in. And we try to even out that heavy subject matter with a bevy of funnier, sillier topics, including us speculating about the N64 Classic Edition, updating our thoughts on Destiny 2 and Metroid: Samus Returns, previewing the games we're playing in October, and much more. The following is not a normal podcast. There's no discussion of movies, television or games, there's no pithy clips pulled to highlight our points. It's a simple conversation between four friends about a truly heinous situation that we've found ourselves having to deal with this week and as such it is a bit disorganized and emotionally raw. This podcast was recorded to directly address the current situation and controversy surrounding the Alamo Drafthouse, Tim League, Devin Faraci and Fantastic Fest. We feel that this is one of the most important tests facing our film geek community right now and we would be remiss if we didn't address it as critics, as fans and as feminists. But we understand that it's not what we normally talk about and as such you may feel like you want to skip it. We hope you don't. This is an important and ongoing conversation about our culture and the way its evolved and while this is by no means a final statement, it is a starting point for us, if not all of you, going into Fantastic Fest. While we do not talk about the specifics of the allegations leveled at Devin we understand that this entire conversation regarding the fallout and League's response to his critics may be triggering for some so please take care of yourself. Huge thanks to Jen Blair (@fakejenblair) and Rafael Ruiz (@RafAntonioRuiz) for joining us today and thanks for listening.
