At the center of the circle is Eiko Araki, a master of the Sanuki Kagari Temari, a Japanese traditional craft passed down for more than 1,000 years on the southwestern island of Shikoku. Each ball, or “temari,” is a work of art, with colorful geometric patterns carrying poetic names like “firefly flowers” and “layered stars.” A temari ball takes weeks or months to finish. Some cost hundreds of dollars (tens of thousands of yen), although others are much cheaper. These kaleidoscopic balls aren't for throwing or kicking around. They're destined to be heirlooms, carrying prayers for health and goodness. They might be treasured like a painting or piece of sculpture in a Western home. The concept behind temari is an elegant otherworldliness, an impractical beauty that is also very labor-intensive to create. “Out of nothing, something this beautiful is born, bringing joy,” says Araki. “I want it to be remembered there are beautiful things in this world that can only be made by hand.” The region where temari originated was good for growing cotton, warm with little rainfall, and the spherical creations continue to be made out of the humble material. These days, temari is getting some new recognition, among Japanese and foreigners as well. Caroline Kennedy took lessons in ball-making when she was United States Ambassador to Japan a decade ago. Araki has come up with some newer designs that feel both modern and historical. She is trying to make the balls more accessible to everyday life—for instance, as Christmas tree ornaments. A strap with a dangling miniature ball, though quite hard to make because of its size, is affordable at about 1,500 yen ($10) each. Today, only several dozen people, all women, can make the temari balls to traditional standards. “The most challenging aspect is nurturing successors. It typically takes over 10 years to train them, so you need people who are willing to continue the craft for a very long time,” Araki said. “When people start to feel joy along with the hardship that comes with making temari, they tend to keep going.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

For transcriptions and more detailed shownotes, please go to: https://swordschool.com/podcast/bronze-age-britons-were-weird-with-dr-james-dilley/ To support the show, come join the Patrons at https://www.patreon.com/theswordguy Dr James Dilley is an archaeologist and craftsman specializing in prehistoric technologies such as flintknapping, and casting bronze weaponry. He is the founder of Ancient Craft, a company that provides expertise and experiences to individuals and educational institutions. James has three archaeology degrees, which seems like an awful lot. He has a BSc exploring polished stone axes, an MA focusing on bone flintknapping hammers, and a PhD from the University of Southampton on Upper Paleolithic hunting technology. So if you get lost in the woods with just a stone, James is clearly your man. In our conversation, we talk about how James got into his career and started Ancient Craft. We talk about casting swords out of bronze, how to do it and what the swords are like. Listen right to the end for a bonus question about hilt design. I can confirm, casting your broadsword is really good fun. I did that with James a while ago. Here's a video of me casting the sword: https://vimeo.com/886422500 Heres a link to the Grotsetter sword: https://nms.scran.ac.uk/database/record.php?usi=000-100-102-426-C&scache=1yxxwujgq5&searchdb=scran We also talk about some of the weird finds (or things we haven't found) from the Bronze Age period. For example, the Tollense battlefield site in Germany, where after the huge battle all the bodies were just left there. Another weirdness is the complete lack of Bronze Age armour found in Britain, when there was loads just over the Channel in France. Why didn't the Brits wear armour? Were they just too brave? Also, why didn't they eat any fish in Bronze Age Britain? And what did they do with their dead? Why can't we find human bones? Surely the theory that people were cannibals can't be true? Listen to the episode for speculative answers to these questions and more!
The needle and thread have been humanity's constant companions for tens of thousands of years: far longer than the dog, the sword, or the wheel, and much longer than reading and writing. Down the centuries the needle has rendered us incredible service and we have come to depend on it. And yet the activity of stitching has long been ignored in the record of human endeavour. Even the modern trend for embracing making and craft tends to leave out sewing. But a new book just out, comes to try to redress the balance. Haptic & Hue's Book of the Year for 2023 is Barbara Burman's The Point of The Needle. In it, Barbara says ‘stitching and stitches are valued precisely because they embody human life and invention, and cloth itself is inseparable from them'. Barbara was the co-author of the well-received book called ‘The Pocket – A Secret History of Women's Lives', but in this new book, Barbara has a much bigger canvas: to rescue sewing from the twilight and to celebrate it as a fundamental human activity. Peter Bellerby is the founder of Bellerby & Co. Globemakers, the world's only truly bespoke makers of globes. His team of skilled craftspeople make exquisite terrestrial, celestial and planetary globes for customers around the world. In The Globemakers: The Curious Story of an Ancient Craft (Bloomsbury, 2023), he introduces us to this world. The story began after his attempt to find a special globe for his father's 80th birthday. Failing to find anything suitable, he decided to make one himself which took him on an extraordinary journey of rediscovering this forgotten craft. The chapters of The Globemakers take us through the journey of how to build a globe, or 'earth apples' as they were first known, and include fascinating vignettes on history, art history, astronomy and physics, as well as the day-to-day craftsmanship at the workshop itself. This beautiful book uses illustration, photography and narrative to tell the story of our globe and many different globes it has inspired. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Born in the United States, Azby Brown is an architect and accomplished author of Japanese design and architecture who embarked on a transformative journey to Japan. He recalls his story in today's book, The Genius of Japanese Carpentry: Secrets of an Ancient Craft. In this episode, I go through his writings about a traditional pagoda construction at Yakushiji Temple in Nara, which took place throughout the 1980s. We learn about the guidance Azby received under master carpenter Tsunekazu Nishioka during that time, as well as the ancient knowledge, wisdom, and way of life that Nishioka practiced. The book also serves as a practical guide for learning the step-by-step process of assembling temple buildings using traditional Japanese methods. I especially enjoyed the book because it offers a rare and personal window into the life of a community of Japanese carpenters. The book also evoked a sense of somber reflection in me, as it conveyed the gradual disappearance of the invaluable craftsmanship embodied by Nishioka and his team.If you'd like to dive deeper into Azby Brown's work, have a look at some of his most popular books below:* The Very Small Home: Japanese Ideas for Living Well in Limited Space* Just Enough: Lessons in Living Green from Traditional Japan * Small Spaces: Stylish Ideas for Making More of Less in the Home * The Japanese Dream House: How Technology and Tradition Are Shaping New Home DesignPlease subscribe to the Local Japan Substack for free. In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1. It was the first satellite in Earth's orbit. Or was it? For over a hundred years, an object has been seen, heard and photographed by people all around the world. This object became known as the Black Knight Satellite. The signals coming from the Black Knight Satellite have been decoded. And if the translation is correct, it's been watching us for 13,000 years. Let's find out why.

On this episode, I speak with a young composer of new orchestral music, Hamish Ander. Hamish joined me from Melbourne, Australia where he uses modern music technologies to bring new orchestral music to life. He and I met through a mutual friend, and I was immediately impressed by his ability to create convincing simulacra of orchestral performances. He uses a keen, classically-trained ear to navigate complex modern music technologies. In addition to creating his own new musical works, he helps other composers get a realistic snapshot of orchestral music without the massive investment of hiring a live ensemble. His is a refreshing and genuine emerging musical voice and I know you will enjoying hearing him share about his journey into classical music on this episode. For my composer friends, if you'd like to connect directly with Hamish to help with your work, please send me an email at salutations@gustavhoyer.com and I can connect you directly.

In this episode I got to chat with James Dilley, Dr of Archaeology, experimental archaeologist, life long flintknapper, prehistorical tool expert and creator of AncientCraft. Ancient craft provides replica prehistoric artefacts, living history demonstrations, workshops and consultation for museums and media. I have about half the items they sell on my Christmas list! Since I last spoke to him, James has completed his Doctorate in archaeology and we discuss his research into the use of antler as a spear tip by Homo Sapiens and Neanderthals in North west Europe during the late Paleolithic 40000 to 30000 years ago, to prevent breaking spear shafts, at the in Europe when the climate would have made tree's scare and wood precious. I ask him about his journey into flintknapping and the reasons he stuck with, which were not as mystically inciting and grounding as I thought! This lead onto the story of developing AnceintCraft and how he got to now being one of the go to people whenever TV and museums are needing some prehistoric demonstrations. Always a pleasure to talk to him, fascinating and I learnt loads. Plus left wanting more and more replicas from him. To find out more about what James does, or to buy some fantastic prehistoric tool replicas and other great ornamental items, head to www.ancientcraft.co.uk Or to catch his channel on youtube head click here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwYm9MSTbHiF7P_hjElRoWQ To watch this podcast as a video on youtube and see early human [although James isn't in his prehistoric gear unfortunately] and Neanderthal man interacting , click here! https://youtu.be/sf81DMoM_Ws Please like, share subscribe. Catch us on itunes and best of all leave a great review. Perhaps write the bad one's on paper to refer back to at a later date... although love to hear from people with ideas, guests or stories to tell in the world of Prehistory. On this episode of The Family Business Voice, Samuel Bautista Lazo speaks with Ramia about indigenous production methods, the enduring quality they engender and the new channels he’s found to market his peoples’ product to the world. – In the remote mountain village of Xiguie’a (Teotitlán del Valle), Mexico, Benizaa (Zapotec) families combine a consummately modern approach to marketing with ancient artisanship and singular local wisdom. The 14,000-year-old craft of Benizaa textile has gained traction with a global audience on the digital marketplace through Dixza Rugs and Organic Farm. – Dixza is a business owned and operated by the Bautista Lazo family, master weavers for countless generations. Their rugs are hand-died and woven from “criollo” native wool, which honours both the timeless method of their ancestors, as well as the enduring quality they produced. – Samuel Bautista Lazo is the latest in a long line of Bautista Lazos to run the business. Unlike his ancestors, however, he studied in England where his research focused on eco-efficiency, industrial ecology, eco-design and industrial waste management. It was other more mundane experiences while in London, however, that led to a sea change in the way his family business would operate. How the land-grant university system has been co-opted by certain interests The backlash on people speaking out against conventional agriculture practices How Greg has seen misinformation reinforced from his time working in the pharmaceutical industry 44:35 - What does Greg believe to be true about modern agriculture that others do not? The whole idea that we are stewards of the ecosystem isn’t true - we ARE the ecosystem, and the microbiome connects all of us This makes the idea of spraying roundup on plants very questionable How this relates to a decline in human health 48:15 - What is a resource Greg would recommend? My guests are Matt Ritchie, Forestry Commission Scotland's archaeologist, Donald Henson, studying for a PhD in Public Perceptions of the Mesolithic at York University, and James Dilley of Ancient Craft and about to embark on a PhD as well. matt quickly disabuses me of the notion that Wolf Brother is set in the Scottish Mesolithic (which is the only reason I had him on in the first place) and then we chat about the wondrous period of hunter-gatherers, wildwoods, and magic in the forest.
