The July episode of Mind Yo' Business is not one you want to miss! Your Podcast Master, Andrew Lambert, can barely contain his excitement for this conversation. A Bloomingtonian since 1982, this month's guest has an abundance of life experience and sound advice to share. Randy Bush is a Hoosier through and through. He grew up with two older siblings in Indianapolis during the 60s and 70s, in the days when walking to school every day was required because the school bus route didn't include his neighborhood. Randy is a die-hard Pacers fan, a self-proclaimed geek, and a total mama's boy. He shares that he was known by his friends then, and some friends still today, as “no fun Randy” for being a mama's boy in every situation. After graduating from Arsenal Technical High School, Bloomington captured Randy's attention when he came to Indiana University for college to study communications and captured his heart when he met his wife while working as a shoe salesman. After working for years as an auto salesman, he left to work as a mortgage loan originator to allow time to truly be there for his children. Living by mottos such as, “Do what you love and good things will come” and “The world doesn't stop when tragedy comes” (accompanied by a “just do it” mentality) have brought him to his career now. Having lost both parents very young, Randy has taken that tragedy and now works with families experiencing loss as a Family Counselor with Everstory. He shares stories about end-of-life celebrations, Hinkle's Hamburgers, and Andrew shares his end-of-life plans to see if they would fly. Your Podcast Master, Andrew Lambert, brought another special guest into the studio for our February episode of Mind Yo Business. Not only is Friar Gabriel a Brother in the Fransican Church, he likes to shred on his skateboard and had a lot to share with us! Friar Gabriel, formerly known as Brandon, was born in New Hampshire and was raised Catholic with his brothers and sisters both there and, later, in Virginia Beach. He recalls the moment he found skateboarding “at the bottom of a mountain on a gravel driveway”. Since taking his vows and becoming a Franciscan Friar of the Immaculate (FFI), he has devoted his time to traveling the country and sharing the gospel message through skateboarding. He shares a story about his time in Australia when he steered a young man in the right direction, he discusses two Bloomington skater extraordinaires who he sees as elevating the sport, and Andrew and Brother Gabriel discuss the stereotypes surrounding skate culture and how Brother Gabriel is working to change that. This episode begins in a unique way and ends with a typical discussion of Lambert Rolls. Brother Gabriel gives Lambert Cafe a seal of approval for throwing bread at patrons. Your podcast master, Andrew Lambert, welcomed Bridgett Divohl into the McKeet Financial Resources Studio for Episode 8 of Season 6 of Mind Your Business. Bridgett, owner of Royale Hair Parlor and a newly licensed health coach, had so much to bring to this conversation! Bridgett grew up in rural Clarksburg, IN and, after graduating from a class of just under 80 students, moved to Cincinnati to pursue a career in cosmetology. After her stint in Cincinnati, she moved on to Chicago where she met her now wife and she shares how the business practices of the salon owner she worked for impacted her role now. Bridgett and her wife made their way to Bloomington after being swept away by our farmers market and the small-town, big-city vibes. Our conversation goes back to how her prior employer was a yogi and passionate about nutrition and that contributed to Bridgett's dream of pursuing a career in health and nutrition. The problem was always, “When is the right time?” When both of her parents were sick simultaneously–dad with Parkinson's disease and mom with cognitive issues–that pushed her to pursue her dream. As COVID-19 hit and challenged her salon, it helped her realize she could trust the team she had to take over.  This podcast delves into finding your passion, pursuing your dreams, the obstacles you will face on the way, and how to keep going. Bridgett also talks about her new business, Sonder Glow Health Coaching, and how that transition has been going. She tells us how she has always wanted to encourage others in their career, empower them to take charge of their physical and mental health, and how that feeds into what she does now. He shares how music was a big part of his upbringing as his parents played vinyls of Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, and many other classic rock groups in the home. Matt talks about his very first job as a DJ – in high school, he and his friend created a business out of their passion for music by DJing house parties and school dances almost every weekend.  Post graduation, Matt shares with us his rocky start to college at IUPUI, how he got into studying broadcasting at Vincennes, and the full-circle journey of coming back to IU to study sports broadcasting.  Andrew and Matt get into how “Unique” came onto the scene via various broadcasting and DJing jobs. The conversation eventually moves to how he made his way into the biggest sports bar in Chicago; his connection to all the major bars in Bloomington; and his big break DJing ESPN's College GameDay for the matchup between Michigan and Indiana. Filled with big names, an insight into broadcasting, a crazy Aerosmith experience, and why throwing chicken wings or hot rolls might not be a great idea, this is an episode any music lover, IU sports lover, or Bloomington native will absolutely not want to miss! Sir Julian Corbett was at the heart of strategy debates before, during and immediately after the First World War. Educator of the British Royal Navy, he was strongly influenced by Prussian General Carl von Clausewitz, but adapted Clausewitz's theories to include the naval dimension that was missing in most Prussian writings. In his theories of 'maritime strategy', which were inherently ‘joint', he combined the traditional Prussian emphasis on land warfare with his own naval concepts and thinking about economic warfare. In the first episode of this new series of podcasts, Professor Andrew Lambert joins hosts Professor Beatrice Heuser and Paul O'Neill. Andrew sees in Corbett the defender of a distinct British role in the world, advocating a 'British Way of War' detached from the European continent, privileging war at sea over war on land. Can this be reconciled with Corbett's famous dictum that ‘since men live upon the land and not upon the sea, great issues between nations at war have always been decided – except in the rarest cases – either by what your army can do against your enemy's territory and national life or else by the fear of what the fleet makes it possible for your army to do'?

We explore the astonishing intertwined tales of both Robinson Crusoe and Alexander Selkirk, two men marooned on a desert island, one in fiction, one in real life.Robinson Crusoe was a novel published in 1719 by Daniel Defoe – that supposedly came from the pen of Crusoe himself – and told the story of how he was marooned and spent 28 years on a deserted island in the Caribbean. The book was enormously successful and is widely considered to be the beginning of realistic fiction as a genre – Crusoe's tale was entirely plausible at a time when ships were regularly sailing from the northern hemisphere to the tropics; when ships were regularly getting wrecked; when pirates were regularly attacking them; when there was still so much to discover about the world's geography; when the idea of a sailor finding himself accidentally or deliberately abandoned on a desert island made perfect sense.Crusoe's story was based on a true story – the story of one Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish mariner who found himself castaway on a remote Pacific island for four years and four months a decade before Defoe wrote Robinson Crusoe. Selkirk is a fascinating character – and his history is absorbing, regardless of the fact that he found himself marooned. He was involved in buccaneering and privateering, he rounded the horn and sailed in the pacific where he attacked Spanish ships and towns – and it was here, on an island known as Mas al Tierra, 400 miles off the coast of Chile, that Selkirk chose to be marooned. To find out more about these two brilliant stories, the way that Defoe intertwined them, and the way that we now believe they are intertwined, Dr Sam Willis spoke with Professor Andrew Lambert, Laughton Professor of Naval History in the Department of War Studies at King's College. In 2010 Lambert joined a German expedition to Mas al Tierra – now known as Robinson Crusoe Island, The expedition focused on the relationship between the fictional character of Crusoe, the real character of Selkirk, and the development of British global strategy that culminated in the arrival of Commodore George Anson's naval expedition in 1741. A century ago in 1922, British historian and strategist Sir Julian Corbett died. Sir Julian's contribution as a historian places him amongst the great scholars and thinkers of military history and strategic studies, alongside the likes of theorist Carl Von Clauzwitz. This episode features Professor Andrew Lambert, Laughton Professor of Naval History in the Department of War Studies, on his new book 'The British Way of War, Julian Corbett and the Battle for a National Strategy'. He talks to guest presenter Dr James W E Smith, a researcher in the Department of War Studies, about why Corbett ranks amongst the greats of military strategic studies, and how he coined the concept of a ‘British way of war'. Lambert discusses how Corbett's ideas were catastrophically ignored in 1914 at the outbreak of the First World War, but went on to help shape Britain's naval successes in the Second World War. Professor Lambert also shares the importance Sir Julian placed on history, as a tool in the intellectual armour of militaries, and his mastery in garnering useful insight from studying Britain's military past to create a national strategy for Britain. Although Corbett would eventually fall from recognition, a century on, Lambert argues, Corbett's importance as a historian and strategist is finally being recognised more and made accessible to the public. In Seapower States: Maritime Culture, Continental Empires and the Conflict That Made the Modern World (Yale UP, 2018), Professor Lambert, examines how each of these polities identities as “seapowers” informed and determined their individual histories and enabled them to achieve success disproportionate to their size.
