In episode 77 of the Podcast for Social Research, recorded live at Goethe-Institut Chicago, BISR faculty and Chicago Coordinator Audrey Nicolaïdes sat down with special guest, art historian Annie Bourneuf, to discuss revolution and counterrevolution, in text and dialectical image. Annie begins with a reexamination of Walter Benjamin's aesthetic and philosophical project in light of a surprising discovery: Paul Klee's famous Angelus Novus—a print in Benjamin's own collection—is in fact a piece of collage; Klee's image is glued atop a sixteenth-century engraving of a portrait of Martin Luther. What did such an image mean to Klee, in the context of counterrevolutionary Munich in the 1920s? And how does this citation bear on Benjamin's attachment to the image and the inspiration he drew from it? Then, Audrey walks us through the schisms that put socialist movements in pre- and interwar Europe on their back foot—and the world-historical consequences these schisms entailed. What were the fundamental assumptions—fundamentally in error—about the progressive nature of historical processes that Benjamin's “Theses on the Philosophy of History” is an attempt to redress? Along the way, the two touch on the centrality of concepts like ephemerality and contemporaneity in Benjamin's work, parody and citation, the revolutionary potential of “hatred for the oppressor,” and more. This episode of the podcast was produced by Ryan Lentini.

His eyes are staring, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress.” - Walter Benjamin

There's Paris Perspective, Africa Calling, Spotlight on France, and of course, The Sound Kitchen. We have an award-winning bilingual series – an old-time radio show, with actors (!) to help you learn French, called Les voisins du 12 bis. And there is the excellent International Report, too. As you see, sound is still quite present in the RFI English service.  Keep checking our website for updates on the latest from our staff of journalists. You never know what we'll surprise you with! Gerald Muller, my beloved music teacher from St Edward's University in Austin, Texas, has been writing books for young adults in his retirement – and they are free! There is a volume of biographies of painters and musicians called Gentle Giants, and an excellent biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., too. They are also a good way to help you improve your English - that's how I worked on my French, reading books which were meant for young readers – and I guarantee you, it's a good method for improving your language skills. To get Br. Gerald's free books, click here. Independent RFI English Clubs: Be sure to always include Audrey Iattoni (audrey.iattoni@rfi.fr) from our Listener Relations department in all your RFI Club correspondence. Remember to copy me (thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr) when you write to her so that I know what is going on, too. N.B.: You do not need to send her your quiz answers! Email overload! If you haven't yet asked to join the group, and you are a member of an independent, officially recognized RFI English club, go to the Facebook link above, and fill out the questionnaire !!!!! (if you do not answer the questions, I click “decline”). There's a Facebook page for members of the general RFI Listeners Club too. Just click on the link and fill out the questionnaire, and you can connect with your fellow Club members around the world. Be sure you include your RFI Listeners Club membership number (most of them begin with an A, followed by a number) in the questionnaire, or I will have to click “Decline”, which I don't like to do! You must ask to join the group, you must furnish your RFI Listeners Club membership number, I'll approve you, and then off you go!  This week's quiz: On 27 August, I asked you a question about an article written by RFI English correspondent Murali Krishnan: “India - Africa partnership gets a boost with investment conclave”. Murali reported on an investment meeting in New Delhi that brought together several African leaders to discuss boosting commercial ties between India and African countries. Krishnan quoted India's Foreign minister – Subrahmanyam Jaishankar – who said that India was among the leading countries that have invested on the African continent. As you are surely aware, China also invests heavily on the African continent. However, the investment policies are quite different – and that was your question: what exactly is the difference between China's investment policy on the continent, and India's? The answer is: As Murali wrote: “Unlike China which has concentrated on creating infrastructure and extracting natural resources, India through its investments, has focused on its core competencies of human resources development, information technology, maritime security, education and health care … A senior diplomat from Nigeria told RFI: ‘Indian project construction and financing in Africa is aimed at facilitating local participation and development. Indian companies rely more on African talent and do capacity building of the local population.'” In addition to the quiz question, there was the Bonus Question: What is your dream day off from school or work?  The winners are: RFI Listeners Club member Kanwar Sandhu from British Columbia in Canada, who is also the winner of this week's Bonus Question; Golam Mahina, a member of the Shetu RFI Listeners Club in Naogaon, Bangladesh, and RFI English listeners Saruar Jahan Mohsin from Kishorganj, Bangladesh; Kalyani Basak, and Karuna Kanta Pal, both from West Bengal, India. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “You've Changed” by Carl Fischer, arranged by Laurent de Wilde and performed by the Laurent de Wilde Quartet; “Let's Go Fly a Kite” from Mary Poppins by Richard and Robert Sherman, sung by David Tomlinson; “Raga Piloo” by Ravi Shankar, performed by the composer and Yehudi Menuhin; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “The Cakewalk” from Children's Corner by Claude Debussy, performed by the composer, and “Angelus Novus”, written and performed by Hatis Noit.    Do you have a musical request? Przypomnieliśmy znany esej Waltera Benjamina pt. "O pojęciu historii", w którym przywołał on właśnie ten obraz i przedstawił jedną z pierwszych jego interpretacji.

Ficou curioso/a? Assiste o vídeo! Walter Benjamin, the great German Jewish cultural critic, loved Paul Klee’s painting “Angelus Novus.” Whenever he moved to a new apartment, he hung it on the wall, to watch over him as he wrote. But it haunted him too. Or maybe it was the future that was haunting him. The world kept forcing him onward, and he couldn’t see where it was all going. He figured it would all look like what had come before.

Text by Walter Benjamin - read by Thomas Leth Rasmussen.
