Cette semaine, Serge nous parle du pianiste turc, Hakan Ali Toker. C'est le pianiste turc Hakan Ali Toker qui est l'invité de cette Jazz Interview. Il m'a reçu dans son appartement d'Istanbul, précisément dans le studio qu'il y aménagé autour d'un grand piano blanc. Par l'une des baies vitrées, on voit s'étirer le Bosphore et l'un des trois ponts qui permettent de passer d'Asie en Europe, la Mer Noire n'est pas loin. Musicien de formation classique, c'est aux USA que Hakan Ali Toker s'est familiarisé avec le jazz. Il a le goût des expériences et a ainsi pu faire interpréter l'une de ses oeuvres, conçue pour orchestre symphonique et quatre pianos accordés différemment selon des gammes microtonales. Il s'amuse aussi, mais avec beaucoup de rigueur, à jongler avec les styles et les genres, sans oublier les traditions musicales turques et les instruments qui y sont rattachés. Ce 13 Novembre, il jouera et dirigera un concert à Ankara, entouré d'une formation de cordes, mais aussi d'une batterie et d'une basse. Cette semaine, Serge nous parle du festival Parfum de Jazz. C'est une Jazz Interview spéciale festival Parfum de Jazz que vous allez écouter dans quelques instants. J'ai pu la réaliser le 8 août dernier, à Pierrelatte, l'un des principaux sites de concerts de ce festival itinérant, puisque les artistes au programme l'étaient dans de nombreux lieux différents, entre les régions des Baronnies et du Tricastin, cette année du 19 juillet au 17 août. La présidente du festival et son principal programmateur ont répondu à mes questions, tout comme les musiciennes du duo Marie Armande qui se produisait ce soir-là avant le concert de la violoncelliste et chanteuse Ana Carla Maza. Cette semaine, Serge rencontre Sarah Lancman à l'occasion de la sortie de son nouvel album "Le Pouvoir des Mots" le 26 mai dernier et de son concert de sortie le 24 juin dernier au Café de la Danse. "Est-ce une nouvelle Carte du Tendre, un nouveau manuel d'Amour Courtois ?… C'est avant tout un album inspiré par l'éternelle « geste de l'amour », celui de Sarah Lancman, qui en chante évidemment tous les titres et qui s'est aussi assise devant son piano pour en interpréter la musique, sur des arrangements de Philippe Maniez. Ce 6ème opus de la musicienne est intitulé Le Pouvoir des Mots. Ce pouvoir est grand tout comme celui de la musique qui les accompagne." JAZZ INTERVIEW mardi et vendredi à 14h. Cette semaine, Julie Chaizemartin, Serge Mariani ou Fred Blanc rencontrent des personnalités du monde du jazz. Julie s'est rendu au festival Jazz à Junas qui s'est tenu du 18 au 22 juillet à l'occasion des 30 ans du festival. Du 18 au 22 juillet, Jazz à Junas a fêté ses 30 ans cette année sous les pins et au son des cigales. Ce village du Gard, niché entre Nîmes et Montpellier vit au rythme du jazz puisque même ses rues ont été renommées avec le nom de musiciennes et musiciens de jazz qui sont passés sur la scène en plein air du festival. Dans un site extraordinaire, la musique y résonne et illumine les carrières dites « Du Bon Temps » qui ont comme un air de ruines antiques. La poésie opère. Soirées magiques donc, son et lumière, pour cette édition un peu particulière qui a aussi mis en avant l'armée de bénévoles qui œuvrent chaque année à la réussite de l'événement. Le premier soir, le public a pu s'évader au son raffiné de la trompette de Paolo Fresu qui présentait « Ferlinghetti », son dernier projet en quartet. Le deuxième soir, place aux femmes avec la batteuse Anne Pacéo et la chanteuse Sandra Nkaké qui présentait son nouvel album « Scars ». Le jeudi, c'est l'accordéon revisité qui nous a épaté, d'abord, avec le trio du jeune Noé Clerc, accompagné par Clément Daldosso à la contrebasse et Elie-Martin Charrière à la batterie. Lauréat du concours Jazz Migration, Noé Clerc se produisait sur la scène des talents émergents, à 18h, en entrée libre sur la place du village, et nous l'y avons rencontré juste après son concert. Crédit photo : Marc Duponcel Si Vincent Peirani est l'un des parrain du jeune Noé, il se produisait justement le même jour, pour le concert de clôture, après le jazz traditionnel du batteur Daniel Humair. Sur ce dernier, référence incontournable de la scène jazz française, notons qu'il connaît bien Junas puisqu'il est l'auteur des vitraux qui ornent le temple du village. Musicien de jazz et artiste peintre donc aussi. Après ses standards fougueux, l'accordéon de Vincent Peirani nous a subjugué, accompagné à merveille par Ziv Ravitz à la batterie et Federico Casagrande à la guitare. Un moment rare de jazz s'envolant en fusion dans des rythmes cinétiques et électro d'une rare poésie. Le vendredi soir était scandinave, avec le contrebassiste suédois Lars Danielsson et son projet "Liberetto". Magnifique, le piano de Grégory Privat s'élevait en maître incontesté de la scène et la batterie de Magnus Oström livrait un extraordinaire solo. A sa suite, le jazz électro du trompettiste norvégien Nils Petter Molvaer revenait à Junas après s'y être produit 25 ans plus tôt. Moment de tension et de grâce pour cette trompette lancinante dans le meilleur sens du terme. Un véritable évènement puisqu'il s'agissait d'un hommage à l'histoire du festival, qui se tissait aussi ce même jour sur la scène des talents émergents avec le groupe du jeune contrebassiste Basile Rahola, natif du village.Enfin, la dernière soirée, éclatante elle aussi, avec "Le Sacre du Tympan" de Fred Pallem dont la musique symphonique nous a emmené rêver vers les étoiles et les satellites d'Elon Musk, réécouter un des premiers morceaux de musique électronique française ou encore se prélasser au son d'une balade sensuelle.En clôture de ses 30 ans de Festival, le violoniste Théo Ceccaldi a surpris avec son nouveau projet "Kutu", qui rend hommage au chant éthiopien et trace le sillon d'une musique plus accessible et populaire, très "festival" en un mot, par rapport à celle, plus sophistiquée à laquelle il nous avait habitué. Getting to Know: George! Chicago drummer George Fludas was born in Chicago on October 10, 1966. He was inspired to play drums by his father, who was also a drummer, and who exposed him to great jazz drummers such as Art Blakey, Max Roach, and "Philly" Joe Jones. He attended Lane Tech High School where he majored in music and played percussion in their concert band and orchestra. After briefly attending Roosevelt University's music school in 1985-86, he began freelancing with Chicago greats Von Freeman, Jodie Christian and Lin Halliday, as well as playing in groups with guitarist Bobby Broom, and saxophonists Ron Blake and Eric Alexander. He has subsequently played with many stellar musicians such as Ira Sullivan, Buddy Montgomery, Lou Donaldson, Frank Wess, Kenny Burrell, Betty Carter, Johnny Griffin, Benny Green, Roy Hargrove, Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, Cedar Walton, Diana Krall, Benny Carter, Phil Woods, Junior Cook, Slide Hampton, and Bobby Hutcherson. Jazz saxophonist Christopher Madsen is one of the most in-demand figures in the Chicago jazz world as a performer, composer, and pedagogue. He serves as jazz faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, former jazz faculty at Midwest Young Artists in Highwood, IL, and was Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) from 2008-2014. He is a sought-after jazz clinician, adjudicating at jazz festivals and offering workshops to ensembles of all ages and levels from across the globe. He is a Vandoren and Conn-Selmer Performing Artist, member of the Fulbright Specialist Program roster, Jazz Education Network, the National Educator's Association, and the National Association for Music Education. Madsen serves on the Education Committee for the Jazz Education Network and has been featured in Jazziz Magazine (2005), the Jazz Spotlight for artsamerica.org (2012), and has been interviewed for saxplaying.com (2018) and the Chicago Jazz Magazine (2019). Ce qui est fondamental ici, c'est la contrebasse à la fois solide et chantante d'Antoine Brochot, très bien entouré par des musiciens maîtrisant parfaitement leur instrument et dont les chorus apportent aux 7 titres de l'album le relief qu'il en attendait. Mike was also a featured guest artist at the 2015 North Carolina Music Educators Conference, as well as a featured guest artist and composer at the 2013 Brevard Music Festival. Sailors has worked as a sideman for bands and artists including the Birdland Big Band, Bobby Sanabria and The Multiverse Big Band, the Fat Cat Big Band, the Baby Soda Jazz Band, the Hot Sardines, the Captain Black Big Band led by Orrin Evans, The Jason Marshall Big Band, Cynthia Sayer and The Mingus Jazz Orchestra. His past experience also includes performances with The Gerald Wilson Orchestra, Jon Hendricks, McCoy Tyner, Marcus Belgrave, Willie Nelson, Dale Watson, Rodney Whitaker and John Clayton. He's also appeared as a featured soloist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. Mike also was an active Trumpet player in the NYC Broadway scene. Past shows include Beautiful - The Carole King Story, Be More Chill and The Prom. Along with an active performing career, Sailors has maintained a busy career in composition. His first commission, dating back to 2005, came from the North American Saxophone Alliance (N.A.S.A). The piece featured the late Dewey Redman and was later recorded and featured on Redman's last commercial recording “Live with Dewey Redman”. Since then, Sailors has been hired by the likes of Mack Avenue Records, Decca Records, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra as well as a host of internationally known musicians including Ryan Kisor, Sean Jones, Rodney Whitaker, Pete Bernstein, Jimmy Cobb and many others. He has also written for TV, most recently for TD Ameritrade. His band, The New Alchemy Jazz Orchestra, recently released an album featuring his compositions. The self-tilted album features originals penned by Sailors, and is distributed by Outside In Music.Originally from Charleston, South Carolina Mike grew up playing in his local church. He went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2001, Michigan State University in 2007 and The University of Texas in 2010. In 2019, Sailors joined the faculty of The University of Texas Butler School of Music, where he leads the Jazz Trumpet Studio and mentors young artists looking to build careers in music. He currently splits his time between New York City and Austin, Texas. Mayfield was also chosen as one of the twelve semi-finalists to compete in the prestigious 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition that was held in Washington, D.C before a legendary panel of judges. In addition to several other awards, Mayfield is also a 2006 Young Arts winner for Jazz Voice. She has also appeared on Dallas/Ft. Worth's news television show WFAA “Good Morning Texas” four times since 2011. Mayfield has opened for several well-known artists such as Kirk Whalum, Will Downing, Randy Brecker, Dave Valentin, Bobbi Humphrey, and The Main Ingredient. LadyMay has also performed in 3 concerts between 2016-2018 with the legendary Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. The first concert was a tribute celebrating African-American women in music entitled “I'm Every Woman”, then again for their Independence Day “Patriotic Pops: Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the USO”, and as of late in the “Classical Roots: Under One Roof” concert honoring the diverse history of the historic Music Hall where they perform. In this episode, we talk about the evolution of Monks from pop-up shows in bicycle shops to the institution it is today, the elements that contribute to his considerations as a bandleader, and the immediate panic induced from missed calls and out of town gigs. FEATURED RELEASE:Collin Shook“Piano Tuning Suite” (2019) Getting to Know: Collin!Collin Shook, native to Dallas, Texas, is a jazz pianist, composer, and double bassist. Studying instruments from all around the bandstand through high school, Collin moved to Austin in 2007, before moving to Tucson where he performed and recorded from 2009 to 2014. Returning to Austin in 2014, he became an in-demand side man, primarily as a jazz pianist, steady work as a double bassist in folk and Americana bands, and began tuning pianos professionally, a hobby he's had since he was 17 years old, servicing pianos for many Austin venues, festivals, notable Texan artists.In collaboration with the art co-op Topology in East Austin, Collin created Monks Jazz Club, a pop-up listening room concept in September 2016. Inspired by the small jazz rooms around the world, along with his experiences gigging over a decade, this twice-a-month or so series provided a space for musicians and fans to experience the music with a performance hall vibe in a small club setting. Collin has hosted nearly 100 pop-up events, each event at varying DIY spaces such as art galleries, cafes, breweries/distilleries, and bicycle shops. Since the pandemic, Monks transitioned to live-streaming, producing over 200+ livestreams at Shook's studio space doubling as his piano servicing venture, East Austin Piano Shop. She has played major stages across the United States, Europe, and Asia from Carnegie Hall to the Montreux Jazz Festival to the Blue Note in Japan. In 2016, she appeared in Woody Allen's Cafe Society as a 1930s jazz singer and was highlighted on the official soundtrack performing her version of “Mountain Greenery.” Her experience in Allen's film inspired the artist to study the craft of acting. An improviser at heart, Coke's eclectic perspective has led him to explore music from Be-Bop to Huddie Ledbetter, Ornette Coleman, Derek Bailey, and beyond. Featuring long-time collaborators Sam Pankey on bass and Daniel Dufour on drums, Sean composed, produced, mixed, and mastered the album from his home studio, Red Willow Studios. He has performed at major jazz festivals around the world, including the Montreal Jazz Festival; North Sea Jazz Festival at the Hague, the Netherlands; the Montreux and Bern Jazz Festivals in Switzerland; the Berlin, Munich, Cologne and Stuttgart Jazz Festivals in Germany along with many tours throughout Europe, Australia, the Far East, the Americas and the Caribbean. In 1976, Butch played a Royal Command Performance for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II which was televised throughout all of Europe. Butch has recorded over 100 albums (see Discography) and has been on three (3) Grammy winning albums, along with being nominated numerous times for the European equivalent of the Grammy.He has appeared on “CBS 60 Minutes,” “The Tonight Show” starring Johnny Carson, “The Merv Griffin Show,” “The Dick Cavett Show,” “the Mike Douglas Show” and six times on “the Jerry Lewis Telethon.” Internationally, Butch has made personal appearances on radio and televisions stations throughout the world. He also travels for the Ludwig Drum Company giving clinics and concerts worldwide (Ludwig/Musser). Butch produced a C.D., Straight On Till Morning, in June, 2003, from Nagel-Heyer Records (Nagel-Heyer Records), Hamburg Germany.Butch was honored by the State of Texas Senate on March 3, 2005 for his many accomplishments in music. On October 15, 2011 Butch was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame. Butch was also honored by the Senate of the State of West Virginia in 2013 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Conn Selmer Institute in 2016 among many other awards from the Avedis Zildjian Cymbal Company, the Ludwig Drum Company, the International Association of Jazz Educators, the United States Air Force Band – the Airmen of Note, The Elkhart Jazz Festival and the Austin, Texas Jazz Society. Pour l'occasion, 40 concerts de légendes sont programmés du 17 décembre au 8 février pour faire revivre cette histoire unique à Paris qui a vu passé les plus grands noms du jazz et les premiers sons des jeunes musiciens, talents de demain. Julie est partie à la rencontre de Jean-Marc Portet, fondateur du lieu en 1982 et de son fils Stéphane Portet, actuel co-propriétaire et programmateur du lieu dont il prend les rênes en 1993. L'interview se déroule sous la grande salle voûtée de l'ancienne chapelle des Lombards, en sous-sol du restaurant éponyme, premier lieu qui a entendu retentir de la musique rue des Lombards. Ensuite, l'histoire se tisse depuis le restaurant Le Diable Vert (ouvert en 1976), que tient Jean-Marc Portet avant de fonder le Sunset en 1982, lieu du jazz rock et du jazz fusion à ses débuts, là où venait aussi se détendre l'équipe du Splendid. Ensuite, ce sera Didier Lockwood, les Frères Belmondo, Rhoda Scott, Simon Goubert et bien d'autres jusqu'aux jeunes talents qui commencent à se produire sur la scène du Sunset aujourd'hui.
