I have the honor to introduce one of my favorite stylists, Aveda Purefessional, Educator, and this week's guest: Sher Smith. In 2010, Sher graduated from the Aveda Institute in Knoxville, TN where she lived and worked until moving to Los Angeles in 2020, now, 3 years later Sher has returned to Tennessee and works halfway between Knoxville and Nashville at my salon, in Cookeville, TN Loxx Salon and Spa.As I've watched Sher start over in a completely new area, and build her clientele entirely from the ground up I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to share a conversation for all my stylists that are building a clientele for the first time, or starting over somewhere new. In this episode: What's your advice for hairstylists that are considering completely starting over somewhere new? So far, what's been the most challenging part of your transition and how have you changed your approach to meet the challenge? How are you leveraging social media to share your work, find new guests and rebuild your personal brand as a hairstylist?Follow Sher on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/sherflair/ Join me at the Aspiring Stylist Podcast group on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/groups/theaspiringstylistAspire Barber and Beauty Academy:http://aspirebarberandbeauty.com/

I am joined by Candace Vitale today to talk about her vast knowledge and love for beauty products, and her self-care and wellness routine. We talk about our injuries, our love for pilates and how it has helped both of us with our back injuries, and making it our mantra to only do what brings you joy. You can find Candace on Instagram: www.instagram.com/mrs.vitale Candace's Bio- Growing up as a Cleveland native in a grocery business family, good clean food was always a staple. Then came the standard from my Sicilian grandmother, who was the pillar of all fashion and beauty, I was getting into all of her goods by the age of 5. Vogue magazine was my bible for more learning as a teenager. After graduating from Rocky River HS, I went to University of Cincinnati and then moved on to graduate from Pennsylvania Culinary Institute. I cheffed for many years and then back to the family business in the grocery stores. I was always very athletic. Figure Skated competitively for 10 plus years all while showing Qhorses for almost 25 years(I won many national titles, a world champion title and was on ESPN at 16:) This is where the injuries came into play that haunt me today. Trying to evade surgeries, which were inevitable, I had to seek out all of the holistic ways to feel better. There were times I tried to escape the family business, as I was always drawn to the beauty industry, I then attended Aveda Institute for an Esthetician degree. While I didn't take state boards to get certified I retained all the knowledge. Once my body couldn't take the labor of the food industry, I fell into Pilates all the way. Trained with Troy McCarty through Balanced Body Pilates and it was life changing. This I owe my ability to function today. I took a leap into the skincare industry with Priya Apotheca as the Sales Director a year ago and here we are today. I have a wonderful husband, son and toy fox terrier. We are all placed on this earth plane for a specific reason, and Tami Cook feels her mission is to help people reconnect back to their original self through a holistic approach of touch therapy. Tami has been practicing the art of bodymind balance for over 12 years. Her journey began at the AVEDA Institute in Washington DC where she studied a holistic approach to Esthiology, learning how the merging of ancient eastern wisdom paired with western technology could bring forth transformational results within the integumentary system. Desiring to dive deeper into the knowledge of the bodymind connection, Tami furthered her Education at the Institute of Psycho-Structural Balancing where she developed her skills as a Bodyworker. Some of the modalities she's studied were deep tissue massage, circulatory massage, spinal balancing, cranial sacral therapy, neuromuscular therapy, sports massage, reflexology of feet, hands, and ears, structural visceral integration, rock taping, rock blading, polarity, Lomi Lomi, Reiki, and cupping therapy just to name a few. Her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology paired with four years of experience as an educator in the Baltimore City Public high school system along with nine years of experience as an educator in the esthetic/massage industry gives Tami Cook a well-rounded approach to working with all people regardless of age, gender, culture or socioeconomic status. Acknowledging people as whole; their body, mind, and spirit is what brings life to the psychosomatic approach Tami takes in and out of her treatment room. Tami Cook's eclectic background has attracted people from all over the world who seek to know the ‘why' and ‘how' behind her ability to seamlessly integrate several modalities into one to create bodymind balance. When Tami Cook is not in the treatment room working one on one with her clients, she is traveling the world teaching her unique style of bodywork to fellow professionals seeking to deepen their awareness of the whole aspect of who we truly are. Dani Fontaine is a fierce advocate for the hemp plant, specifically for its sustainable, renewable, and value as a multi-use crop. Dani began her career 8 years ago in 2008. She and her mother, Tracee Box started the first organic edible company, called Tastee Yummees. By mid-2011, her mother began focusing more on nutrition-based health and wellness, while Dani took over the reins of the company eventually selling to Cheeba Chews and exiting out of the MMJ industry. In 2011, Dani received her certification in massage therapy and esthetics, from the Aveda Institute to help her establish a CBD and hemp-based spa and healing center. In 2013, Dani and her father, “Wild Bill”, started Colorado Hemp Project in 2013. They were among the first successful hemp fields planted and harvested in the U.S. in almost 60 years. After seeing a field of beautiful green hemp plants, the next logical step was to begin a healing, organic, hemp-based body care company. Dani teamed up with her mom and in 2013 Nature's Root was born. Nature's Root was created to fuel Dani's passion of creating and formulating products with a mission, unlike the majority of hemp products on the market today. Dani has a tenacious and positive attitude that helps her play an integral role in developing relationships and strategic partnership across the world for the hemp plant. Working in close partnership with The Colorado Hemp Project, Dani is working on several fronts, including ventures in nine other states (Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida and NY), and two countries (Jamaica and Puerto Rico). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/americanhemp/support

Happy Monday G-IRLS :) Fun fact: 13 is actually my favorite number, so I'm very excited that this is my 13th episode of the podcast!! We have a very brave woman sharing her story today, and I can't wait for y'all to learn more about her. Lakeasha is a model, actor, entrepreneur, and the founder of VIVALUX7 which is an everyday wear cosmetic line. She has overcome many trials in her life, including the brutal murder of her boyfriend at the young age of 17, who was also the father of her 7 month old child. Being a teen mom and dealing with this unexpected tragedy left her mentally and emotionally paralyzed. She has spent many years trying to figure out how to turn her numbness and pain into something positive. Her love and passion for the beauty industry lead her to attend Aveda Institute of New Orleans and graduate in Esthiology Science in 2016. Since then, she has created her own cosmetic line which represents strength and beauty. Her brand is to show the world the power of never giving up no matter what life tries to throw at you. Today I sit down with Style Director and Educator Jess Sutherland. Jess is an extremely experienced stylist, and she is no stranger to a photoshoot or competition. We talk about the hard reality and stigma around hairdressing and becoming a hairstylist and how this initially deterred us both from following our dreams.I love how similar our storys are. We both did a lot of extra curricular activities and were a bit "average" at almost everything until we found hairdressing.‘Hi Mum, I've decided I'm going to be a hairdresser. I've quit my job and I start tomorrow' was the beginning of Jessica Sutherland's career as a hairdresser. Jess had previously studied graphic design and had multiple retail jobs but could never quite find what she was looking for. Hopefully this was is it… Jess started her apprenticeship 2010, after 6 months she moved to another salon, where she was thrown straight into a fully booked clientele of cutting, colouring, blow drying and styling. This was the start of big things to come….. She studied at the Aveda Institute at Box Hill TAFE. Jess loved every minute of trade school and flew through her studies, finishing up in 2012- she completed the rest of her apprenticeship working and building a clientele in the salon. She had a lot of success in her time at the Aveda Institute, and took every opportunity that was given to her, some of them include.• Entrant in World skills competition 2011• Finalist for Apprentice of the year two years running• Winner Apprentice of the Year 2012 (Aveda Institute)• Finalist for the Alan Broadhead Student of The year (Box Hill Institute)• Winner of Alan Broadhead Student of the Year• Scholarship sponsored by Toni Hair Gem• 1st place Ladies cutting (open day competition)• 1st place female photographic competition She realised she had found what she had been looking for, a career that fulfilled her. Once qualified Jessica took her career to the next level – being offered a position with Rokk Ebony Salon in Toorak. Jessica's dreams were about to come to life! She underwent intense training in all aspects of hairdressing and is now currently in high demand as one of the best stylists in the high profile busy Toorak salon. Jessica began her journey with Rokk Ebony in 2014. Now as a short hair specialist and men's cutting specialist, she shares her time working for both Rokk Ebony and Rokk Man Barbers - working with traditional barbering tools and techniques, always striving for that perfect fade! Jess has a passion for learning. She has continued furthering her skills throughout her career most recently revisiting fundamentals with 'Lil off the Top - Meat and Potatoes Chicks' course, earning her gold key as a 'Kevin Murphy Session Stylist' and advanced training with American crew. Hungry for knowledge, you will always find Jessica using online platforms to educate herself, or on the hunt for new ideas and techniques share with her clients and colleagues. A natural educator, Jessica has held many in salon workshops, and tutored staff in various cutting/styling techniques and landed herself a position as 'Blow Drying/Styling Educator' at the Rokk Ebony Academy in 2018.Jessica has entered industry competitions since the first year of her apprenticeship such as HBIA (The 'Bob' runner up 2017, 'The Fade - Barbering 3rd Place 2019 ' ) , IHS, American crew ‘All Star' challenge, Wella Trend Vision, the Australian Hair Fashion Awards, and the Hair Expo Awards. The past few years have brought great success for Jessica, . AHFA Newcomer of the Year 2018.' . Conscious Beauty Talk with Amy Wall Gua Sha, the darling of the holistic skincare industry, translates to "scraping skin", and has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It originally involved repeated pressed strokes over lubricated skin with a smooth-edged and blunt instrument. Commonly a ceramic Chinese soup spoon was used, a blunt, well-worn coin, honed animal bones, jade, or even a simple metal cap. Now, in modern-day North America, Gua Sha has been westernized and many feel that this ancient wisdom has been appropriated for profit while watering down the sacred practice. Anna Wang a first-generation Chinese American, joins us to discuss her views on the culture, history, and evolution of this humble facial tool and how we can best embody its medicine while honoring its roots. Anna Wang graduated with a Esthetician License from Aveda Institute of Chapel Hill in 2015. She has always had a passion for helping and education people in skincare and makeup. After a couple of setbacks and emergencies, Ken and Melanie finally were able to sit down with Devacurl stylist and salon owner Kristy Zimmerman, of Uptown Curl. Kristy recently made waves in the curly community, after posting on Facebook about ingredient changes and possible issues surrounding that, so Ken and Melanie decided to have Kristy on the show to share her side of the story and to give her opinion on the possible problems that those specific ingredients may cause. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is your chance to ask a world-class Curl Professional your questions, and get them answered by a Curly Specialist!
