Ten years ago, HSD launched the Career and College Pathways project with a bold vision: to forge clear and viable educational paths for all students. Today, we proudly reflect on the growth and success of this initiative. Over the past decade, we have developed more than 60 CCPs, including 34 state-approved Career and Technical Education programs. This milestone underscores the relentless commitment and invaluable contributions of our partners across various career sectors. At our spring CCP Steering Committee meeting on April 16th, we brought staff leaders together with partners from local industry, postsecondary institutions, and community organizations to celebrate our achievements and discuss ways we can further enhance our offerings. Attendees had the opportunity to go on bus tours of our schools, visit CCP classrooms, and interact directly with the teachers and students who are driving our programs forward.  We also celebrated increasing student participation in our CCPs, the expansion of work-based learning opportunities, and the growing number of students earning college credits while in high school. These achievements not only demonstrate our students' preparedness for postsecondary challenges, but also affirm the core values of our educational mission.  Visit our website to learn more about our work, and about recent and upcoming events: Sports Marketing Hillsboro Hops Takeover Nights: Tuesday, May 21st for Hilhi; and Tuesday, May 28th for Liberty Hilhi Sports Medicine Mentorship: Shaping Future Healthcare Leaders with OHSU Glencoe High School Showcases Student Craftsmanship in Woodworking Contest Century Staff Serve up Sushi Skills in Culinary Our featured event was our 9th Annual Proud to be HSD Festival on Saturday, May 11th! This year's Festival was a smashing success - the weather was beautiful and spirits were high as we celebrated our amazing HSD students. Wes Rhea is the CEO of Visit Stockton and has led destination marketing in Stockton, California, since 2005. A strong advocate of small destination marketing organizations, Wes is a past President of the Destination Marketing Association of the West. He has also served on the board of the California Travel Association, the Destination Marketing Association of the West Education and Research Foundation, and the Central Valley Tourism Association. Wes currently serves on US Travels Destinations Council, the Advocacy and Professional Development Committees at Destination International, and is the Rural Committee Chair at Visit California. Wes is best known for being an early adopter of new tourism tech and a big fan of data. A Stockton native, Wes is committed to giving back to his community and currently serves on the board of the Stockton Maritime Museum, the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce, and the Airport Advisory Commission. Wes is married to Kristi, has two sons, and served ten years in the US Army. On this episode of Destination on the Left, Wes Rhea shares his leadership philosophy and how it has empowered his team to adapt and thrive in any situation. We delve into the advantages of embracing technology and how incorporating video and graphic design services in-house has revolutionized their operations. Wes also provides insights on managing a destination with a negative perception, both internally and externally. He discusses the creative strategies his team employs to shift this perception, including leveraging Stockton's status as the most diverse city in the nation. What You Will Learn in this Episode: How the ten years that Wes served in the US Army has served him in leading his team How embracing new technology and bringing video and graphic design services in-house transformed operations at Visit Stockton Why the Visit Stockton funding model contributes to how they attract visitors to the city, and why they focus on more than just heads in beds How Wes and his team work to overcome the challenge of a negative perception and becomes a cheerleader for the city Stockton Flavorfest is an excellent example of effective collaboration between cities and tourism entities, allowing them to showcase the vibrancy of a community. How Being a Veteran Has Helped Wes as a Leader Wes believes that his experience in the Army has dramatically influenced his leadership style and ability to lead his team effectively. He highlights two key aspects that he attributes to his military background: team development and the ability to work under pressure and adapt. This mindset has translated into his approach as a CEO, where he values and appreciates every individual's contribution to the team. Stockton Flavorfest Inspired by Stockton's distinction as the most diverse city in the nation, Stockton Flavorfest was designed to celebrate the community's diversity through food, arts, and cultural activities. The festival prioritized curated vendors, sustainable practices, and a cohesive visual identity. With the seed funding, Visit Stockton was able to realize their vision, providing engaging entertainment such as Ballet Folklorico and Tahitian dancers, cooking demos, and free arts and crafts for children. The inaugural two-day event in 2022 surpassed expectations, attracting 12,000 attendees and earning Visit Stockton the prestigious Best New Festival award from the International Festival and Events Association. Overcoming Negative Image Visit Stockton faces the ongoing challenge of combating the negative perception surrounding the city. Despite being the 11th largest city in California, Stockton is plagued by higher violent crime rates, leading to discouraging comments from residents. However, the team at Visit Stockton remains determined to change the narrative. They organize fun projects and initiatives, such as a campaign highlighting Stockton as the birthplace of the Fantastic Four. Although these efforts may not directly change people's opinions or attract tourists, they create a sense of pride among residents and offer a feel-good factor for the team. Despite the daily battle against negativity, Visit Stockton embraces a proactive approach, thinking outside the box and working as cheerleaders for the city, showcasing its hidden gems and fostering positive experiences for visitors and locals alike. Indigenous folkloric dances--the Aztecs, Mayas and Yaquis. Imagine it to be the late 15the Century or early 16th Centruy -- a time before the year 1519, before the arrival of the Spaniards to Mexico. It is a cool and breezy afternoon in the central highland plateau of Mexico. It is possibly the afternoon of the equinox, a religious feast day of tremendous magnitude in the religion of the people that inhabit a major metropolis of nearly one million people in the city of Tenochtitlan, the capital city of the Aztec empire. The call from the conchas, or shell, alerts the people that the hour has arrived for the religious celebration to take place around the base of the pyramids in the center of the city. The entire population will be asked to participate. From all the causeways that lead to the center of Tenochtitlan, the people come marching to be in the festivities in which they will pay thanks and homage to their deities. Atop the top of the pyramid, at the teocalli, the smoke from a small fire can be seen; the high priests from the orden sacerdotal, or the sacerdotal order, await for the massing of the people. When they are all together, the festivities begin – -the incantations are given, - the guerras floridas take place; these are the mock battles and mock wars fought with flowers and banners surrounded by flowers on bamboo or reed shafts carried by warriors and swung like knives and swords, instead of the real weapons; - the human sacrifices are performed; - and then the dance begins... this podcast opens by setting the stage of the folkloric dances of the ancient Aztec empire -- what we call, las DANZAS INDIGENAS – the folkloric dances of the indigenous tribes of Mexico. This scenario took place in many of the indigenous tribal cities – from Tlaxcala to Cholula to Tenochtitlan, the central might of the Aztec empire, which is today Mexico City. In this episode, we will cover the danzas indigenas, that is the pre-Columbian era of Mexican folklore and dance. We cover 3 regions or tribes and their pre-Columbian dances: (1) the Aztecs with their dances honoring their deities called Quetzalcoatl and Huizilopotchli; (2) the Poblanos and their Danza de los Quetzales; and (3) the famous Danza del Venado of the Yaquis in the Northwestern desert areas of Sonora. Different examples of the music are given in this podcast episode, as the recordings came from an outdoor, live performance of Ballet Folklorico groups in a free presentation at the large open-air ampitheatre in San Antonio, Texas. This podcast also contains a brief discussion of the importance of folkloric dance to the indigenous peoples of Mexico, as well as how it set the stage of the evolution of what is today folklorico music and dance of Mexico, after the coming of the Spaniards and the Conquest of Mexico.
