Pianist Iain Burnside choses his favourite recording of Liszt's Totentanz.

Dmitry Masleev took first prize in the Piano category of the 2015 Tchaikovsky International Competition and since then has released a number of recordings. The latest, from Aparté, is a concertante collection of Liszt's Totentanz, his Rhapsodie espagnole (in a version for piano and orchestra made by Masleev's professor at the Moscow Conservatoire, Mikhail Petukhov) and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. He was joined by the Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra. James Jolly, who first met Masleev during the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, caught up with him again to talk about how the competition changed the course of his career, the new album and how the Dies irae theme infuses so many great classical works.

Empathie Im Verkauf – Viel Beschworen, Selten Ausgeübt Wie weit ist es mit unserer Empathie im Verkauf? Neulich habe ich ein Mädchen beobachtet, wie es eine Schnecke zertrat. Es tanzte und sprang immer wieder auf den Boden. Da fragte ich sie ob sie einen neuen Tanz übt. Sie meinte nur: “Nein, ich mache die eklige Schnecke tot.” Sie zeigte mir die Reste der Schnecke auf dem Boden und sagte mir stolz – schau die ist schon fast weg, schaute mich stolz an und machte ihren Totentanz weiter. Nun muss ich zugeben, ich bin sicher kein Freund von Schnecken und dennoch rührte mich dieses zermalmte Etwas auf dem Boden. Ich empfand plötzlich Ablehnung gegen die Zerstörungswut dieses Kindes. Woher kam diese Wut und dieser Stolz die Schnecke zertreten zu können? Spürte sie das erste Mal macht über ein anderes Lebewesen, dachte ich – auch wenn es nur eine Schnecke ist. Ich wollte diesem Mädchen nun Respekt vor dem Leben beibringen nur sie lies sich nicht erwärmen. Irgendwann hörte sie alleine auf, auf dem Rest der Schnecke herumzutrampeln und meinte nur “jetzt ist die sicher tot.” Willkür Von Empathie Dieses Mädchen hat mich an diese Willkür von Empathie im Verkauf erinnert. Die einen bekommen es – und die anderen eben nicht. Dieses Mädchen hätte niemals eine Katze so behandeln können und so geht es uns doch auch. Brauchen wir Rührung u Empathie zu entwickeln? Das Wort Empathie im Verkauf verfolgt mich schon seit einigen Jahren. Jeder will empathisch sein und niemand möchte wirklich herzlos sein. Nur wird diese Kunst zu fühlen, was ein anderer fühlt oft beschworen und selten ausgeübt – viel seltener aks wir es denken oder gerne hätten, Ich weiss noch als ich mir den Fuss gebrochen hatte, mit einer Eisenplatte und 9 Nägeln im Fuss im Krankenhaus lag. Meine Tochter damals 7 Jahre alt, konnte nicht alleine zu Haus bleiben und ich konnte sie auch nicht in die Schule fahren – es war keiner da der sie fahren konnte und Familie hatte ich hier nicht um die Ecke. So habe ich die Mutter der Schulfreundin meiner Tochter gefragt, ob meine Tochter solange ich im Krankenhaus war bei ihr bleiben konnte, sodass sie in die Schule gehen kann. Ja sie durfte es. Ich war komplett erleichtert darüber. Nach 2 Tagen kam meine Tochter zu mir, dass sie dort nicht mehr länger bleiben könne, die Mutter habe gefragt wie lange es noch sein müsste. So lies ich mich vorzeitig entlassen mit Liegegips – holte mir Krücken und fuhr mit meinem (Gott sei Dank) Automatikauto meine Tochter täglich die 5 km zum Bus. Ich lechzte eigentlich nach Anteilnahne und empfand, dass niemand nachvollziehen konnte wie ich da durch die Hölle ging. Etwas später ist genau dieser Mutter so etwas passiert: Scheidung, Schulden, niemand der auf das Kleinkind aufpasste. Und klar jetzt wäre der Ball bei mir gewesen. Empfand ich Mitgefühl – konnte ich Empathie zeigen? Fühlte ich das was sie fühlte? Ehrlich gesagt war mein erster Gedanke ganz ein anderer. Endlich weiss sie mal was auch ich durchgemacht hatte. Glauben Sie mir sie wissen es nicht. Sie sind zu sehr in den eigenen Gedanken um überhaupt irgendwo zerversetzt rückblickend Empathie zu empfinden. Wie Ist Das Mit Empathie Im Verkauf? Seien wir doch mal ehrlich – sind wir nicht genauso wie dieses Mädchen. Haben wir wirklich ein echtes Einfühlen in den Kunden wenn die Firma in Konkurs geht? Oder tun wir einfach nur so als ob wir Empathie in einer Verhandlung hätten, damit wir selbst bessere Umsätze machen? Ich bin überzeugt, dass nur wirkliches echtes Interesse am Gegenüber mit wahrer Empathie im Verkauf – und darunter verstehe ich zu fühlen was das Gegenüber fühlt und so besser zu verstehen – auf Dauer erfolgreich sein kann. Und das gilt für Verkäufer genauso wie für Führungskräfte. Es geht immer um den Menschen dahinter und dafür muss man immer wieder den eigenen Ego-Trip nach hinten stellen und wirklich versuchen zuzuhören und sich in den anderen hineinzufühlen. Ich sehe das nicht als Sozialromantik sondern als Ethik im Business mit dem man durchaus auch über Vertrauen, Loyalität, Respekt und Wertschätzung hervorragende Geschäfte machen kann. Clausewitz wrote that there are three forces at work when a nation goes to war: “unbridled passion,” reason, and the play of chance and probability. Things only work well when each of these is held in equilibrium by the other two. The people, the government, and the military represent these forces and the government should, in theory, maintain that equilibrium. In practice, this never happens. Instead, the interplay among these is random and seemingly chaotic. Each aspect of the nation and the force it represents, must deal with friction within their group and friction from and within the other groups. The pendulum that swings among these power centers is also influenced by external forces including, but certainly not limited to, the enemy. Starptautiskajam komponistu konkursam "Rostrum", ko rīko Starptautiskā Mūzikas padome (International Music Council) un UNESCO, šogad rit 70. jubilejas gadskārta. Konkurss un konference norisinājās Viļņā no 13. līdz 17.maijam, un tajā piedalījās radio pārstāvji no Eiropas, Meksikas, Honkongas un Argentīnas. Darbi tika vērtēti divās kategorijās – galvenajā un jauno komponistu kategorijā – komponisti līdz 30 gadu vecumam. Latviju pārliecinoši pārstāvēja Annas Fišeres opuss "Hesychia" lielam ansamblim un Platona Buravicka "Spark" kamerorķestrim, Annijas Annas Zariņas "Say Only a Word" ierindots labāko darbu pieciniekā jauno komponistu kategorijā. "Pa ceļam ar klasiku" intervijas laikā sazināmies ar mūsu kolēģi Annu Veismani Viļņā, kura arī klausījās konkursa darbus un piedalījās konferencē un diskusijās. Augstāko novērtējumu galvenajā kategorijā saņēma Polijas komponists Rafals Riterskis (Ryterski) par darbu "Totentanz" kontrtenoram, simfoniskajam orķestrim un elektronikai. Jauno komponistu kategorijā līdz 30 gadu vecumam uzvarēja komponists no Nīderlandes Tomass van Duns (van Dun) ar simfonisku opusu "Rocaillies de l'apres-vie". Labāko desmitniekā ir darbi no Austrijas, Francijas, Čehijas, Igaunijas, Norvēģijas, Serbijas, Somijas un Šveices. Jauno komponistu piecu rekomendējamo darbu sarakstā ir komponisti no Latvijas, Igaunijas, Honkongas, Nīderlandes un Portugāles. 2023. gada "Rostrum" piedāvātie darbi raidīti vairāk nekā 600 reižu, tostarp arī Andra Dzenīša "Credo" (raidīts 12 reizes) un Alises Rancānes “Ars Magna”(raidīts astoņas reizes).

Ronald Stevenson (1928–2015) is best remembered for his huge output of music for the piano, an instrument he played with a rare understanding of tonal color. It was thus entirely within character that he responded enthusiastically to the opportunity to explore the musical possibilities of the accordion, most impressively in a ‘Dance Poem' of some scale. Stevenson was also an inveterate transcriber, producing hundreds of piano versions of pieces written for other forces. Die christkatholische Kirchgemeinde in Basel feiert an Karfreitag eine Passionsfeier. SRF überträgt den Gottesdienst zur Erinnerung an Leiden und Tod Jesu live in Radio und Fernsehen aus der Predigerkirche am Totentanz. Die Karfreitagsfeier hat in der christlichen Tradition einen schlichten Charakter. Der Gottesdienst beginnt mit dem Lesen von zwei alttestamentlichen Texten. Diese bilden den Rahmen, in dem die Frömmigkeit den Tod Jesu versteht: Gott schaut auf das Wehrlose und er will für sein Volk Freiheit. Auf diesem Hintergrund gewinnt die Passion Jesu einen tiefen Sinn: Der Gott, den Jesus seinen «mütterlichen» Vater nennt, findet sich nicht mit dem Tod des Menschen ab. Danach wird die Passion, wie sie das Johannesevangelium überliefert, von Diakonin Karin Schaub, Pfarrer Max Kulzer und Pfarrer Michael Bangert gelesen. Die Orgel spielt Jörg-Andreas Bötticher und den Gemeindegesang verstärkt eine Vokalgruppe unter der Leitung von Annemarie Fränkl Knab. Einige Texte der Feier wurden neu übersetzt, um dem Selbstverständnis Jesu als Jude gerecht zu werden.

On the way home from the battle at Totentanz, the team ends up stranded by sabotage.
