Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey are the Founders of Barefoot, now the world's largest wine brand. Since their successful acquisition by E&J Gallo, they have dedicated their lives to helping other entrepreneurs with the lessons they learned in the process. They are popular keynote speakers, writers, teachers, and regular media guests on the subject of entrepreneurship and business culture including several previous interviews on Critical Mass. Over the past year, Michael and Bonnie have spoken at Oxford, Cambridge, Nanyang University in Singapore, and Keynoted at several events including the Antrepreneurial Center at UCI. They adopted their New York Times bestseller, The Barefoot Spirit, into a theatrically performed audioplay that was recognized as a 2020 Business Audie Award Finalist by the Audiobook Publisher's Association. That success gave rise to their new project, Business Audio Theatre where they dramatize founder's startup stories in an effort to preserve their legacy and attract, retain, and engage their people. Their Hollywood audio productions are reminiscent of pre-television 1940s radio dramas, complete with actors voicing parts in seminal scenes that demonstrate business principles, complete with sound effects and music. Their most recent production, The Brain Savers, How a Scrappy Startup Transformed Telemedicine and Patient Care chronicles the entrepreneurial journey of Dr Colin McDonald as he and his team overcome financial, technical, and legal obstacles to create a pioneer, interstate, telemedicine company in the early 2000s. Michael and Bonnie created Business Audio Theatre to address the increasing trend in resignations and lack of engagement. They believe that entertaining and gripping stories help listeners identify with the founder's principles and pull for their success. Michael and Bonnie live in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County California, and host corporate retreats at their wine country estate. -- Critical Mass Business Talk Show is Orange County, CA's longest-running business talk show, focused on offering value and insight to middle-market business leaders in the OC and beyond. Since they sold their popular wine brand Michael Houlihan & Bonnie Harvey have dedicated themselves to helping others achieve the same success without suffering through the same mistakes that they made. They started in a laundry room of a rented farmhouse in the Sonoma County hills and ended up in the boardroom of the world's largest winery. They were under capitalized and lacked knowledge of their industry. They were forced to become resourceful, develop and utilize soft skills, forge long term relationships with strategic allies, and practice an extended view of customer service.Because they couldn't afford commercial advertising, they developed what they called, “Worthy Cause Marketing”. They supported hundreds of small non-profits in the neighborhoods surrounding the stores where their products were sold. They hoped to give the members of those non-profits a social reason to buy their products.Their Customer Care people were transformed from “complaint resolution” to “customer intel”. Today they help companies develop formal lines of communication between Customer Care and Marketing, R&D, and Production to keep their products and services relevant and competitive. Barefoot is now the #1 Wine Brand in the world. In this episode we discuss the following:How bankruptcy turned into opportunity and led to the creation of Barefoot WinesAn example of how a great idea came from an unlikely sourceGoing the extra mile in supporting nonprofits in your business strategyHow to motivate employees and structure a customer service organizationMentioned in the show:The Barefoot Spirit AudiobookEntrepreneurial Speaking ReelSOCAPBarefoot WinesTo Contact Michael:www.thebarefootspirit.comTo Contact Chip:Email: TheChipChatPodcast@gmail.comFacebook: The Chip Chat PodcastInstagram: The Chip Chat Podcast

Re-posting our episode with Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey, founders of Barefoot Wine and authors of the best-selling book, “The Barefoot Spirit.” In this episode, Michael and Bonnie share the details of how they turned a collections nightmare into America’s #1 wine brand.
Bonnie Harvey is the co-founder of Barefoot Cellars along with partner Michael Houlihan. She was Vice President and “The Original Foot” for 19 years. There she had a wide variety of duties, doing whatever was necessary to operate the business. While Michael’s role was “big picture visionary,” Bonnie translated his ideas into workable processes and displayed a genius for managing the millions of details that come with a start-up. She proved to possess a rare combination of creativity and business savvy that served Barefoot well. In the early days of the brand, Bonnie was responsible for bottling oversight, supply inventory and label design—in fact, the famous footprint is actually hers! Later as Barefoot grew, she focused on overview and direction of the business, setting company goals, and attending to Board of Director matters. She managed all financial aspects of the business, oversaw legal relations and compliance, and edited countless press materials, presentations, official manuals and other documents. Along with Michael, Bonnie donates professional time to non-profits to help them improve their image, increase donations and achieve financial sustainability. She also coauthors weekly business blogs at The Barefoot Spirit and Consumer Brand Buiders with him, and they consult together with several clients. Bonnie has a passion for helping young entrepreneurs choose the right path. With her varied “hard-knocks” experience, she offers practical solutions for all aspects of starting a business. She loves showing others how to avoid painful and costly mistakes and directing them toward profitability. Bonnie is the Co-author of The Barefoot Spirit: How Hardship, Hustle, and Heart Built America’s #1 Wine Brand, a New York Times Bestselling Business Book. Michael Houlihan is a highly sought-after business strategist, keynote speaker, consultant, and corporate trainer. Presentations are often with Bonnie Harvey, his Co-founder of Barefoot (now the #1 wine brand in the world), providing decades of real-world, practical business experience. Using out-of-the-box thinking, pay-for-performance, positive culture, channel distribution management, and “Worthy Cause Marketing,” they help start-ups, entrepreneurs and Fortune 500 corporations increase their sales, profitability and brand equity. For the first time, their secrets to success is available in an exclusive online series at BarefootSpiritGPS.com He, along with Bonnie, bootstrapped Barefoot (a novelty wine brand) into a national mega-brand, selling 600,000 cases per year in 50 states and 28 countries. They’ve keynoted at many prestigious conferences, symposiums, universities and forums. Listen to a free chapter of Michael and Bonnie's audio theater book. at businessaudiotheatre.com. These leaders share their insight on anything from understanding customer decisions, to creating an empathetic business, to achieving sustainable profitability. No matter your industry, there are tangible takeaways in each episode that you can apply in your own career and business.
When they launched a Sonoma wine business in their laundry room in 1986, Bonnie Harvey and Michael Houlihan were business consultants with no industry knowledge and no money, just $300,000 worth of bulk wine. Today, the Barefoot Wines label they started is a top international brand. They've written thousands of articles and two best-selling books—The Barefoot Spirit: How Hardship, Hustle and Heart Built America's Number One Wine Brand and The Entrepreneurial Culture: 23 Ways to Engage and Empower your People. Now they're helping other entrepreneurs tell their stories in imaginative audio books. The common theme running through all these successful endeavors is being outsiders, continually forced to come up with novel solutions. “We'd never written a book before. We'd never done an audio book before. We'd never done a wine business before,” Michael tells Published Author Podcast host Josh Steimle. “We weren't wine people. We were entrepreneurs.” TOP TAKEAWAY: YOU CAN DO IT! That's the message Bonnie and Michael want to pass on to entrepreneurial consumers of their print and audio books. “The Barefoot Spirit is a you-can-do-it story, says Michael. “No, it's not what you expect. It's more work and different work than you thought, but this is doable. That's the message, an encouraging message for entrepreneurs.” After 19 years of a “get-rich slow scheme,” Bonnie and Michael sold Barefoot Wines and wrote a book, at their staff's insistence. “Once we sold our company, our staff came around and said working for us was the most unique, wonderful experience they'd ever had. And that we'd have to write a book about the company culture, which is why they'd all stayed with us.” says Bonnie. “Because our approach was so unique, we wanted to share it with other people, and the only way to do that was in a book.” But they didn't want the Barefoot Spirit to be a typical, top-down business book. “So we thought why don't we just give them a story and let them draw their own conclusions, because they'll see the action and outcomes and learn the lessons even better than in a prescriptive text,” says Michael. Make sure you're ghostwriter understands the principles you're communicating After a disastrous first attempt at hiring a writer for their book, Michael and Bonnie found Rick Cushman, a longtime food-and-wine columnist for the Sacramento Bee, who impressed them with his humor, style and ability to tell stories. “He talks to the average person, which was our end user in the wine industry,” says Bonnie. “So we'd tell him stories, and he'd take notes.” “I would recommend to your listeners if you're going to get a ghostwriter, make sure they understand the principles you're trying to get across,” adds Michael. “What is the basic message here? Is it a message of tenacity, of innovation, of humanity?” TURNING BUSINESS BOOKS INTO AUDIO PLAYS The couple's latest book, The Entrepreneurial Culture: 23 Ways to Engage and Empower Your People, is an audio book, intended to reach a wider, younger audience. But it has a twist. “We bought the top 10 audiobooks on Audible, and every one was great. But they were all read to you. They were all narrated,” says Michael. Driving across the Nevada Desert one day, they heard a PBS radio play complete with actors, sound effects and music. “We thought this is a fantastic way to communicate, through an audio play, like we had in the 1940s, before television.” “Audio is entirely mobile, and you're not tethered to a screen or a page—you're jogging, driving, cooking pasta, vacuuming the floor—and you're listening to a story and you're learning from it. And you can put it down or pick it up anytime you like.” The Entrepreneurial Culture was named a top-five audio book of 2020 by the Audiobook Producers Association. The award's judges said they'd never heard a nonfiction audiobook like it, let alone one that was self published. Bonnie and Michael are now offering their audio theatre services to other entrepreneurs so these companies can preserve, in story form, their legacy, successes and knowledge. “We're motivated to help others and educate ourselves, to stay on top of the entrepreneurial education industry.” LINKS LinkedIn - Michael Houlihan Linkedin - Bonnie Harvey Twitter Facebook Instagram YouTube TheBareFootSpirit.com Subscribe To The Published Author Podcast If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or anywhere else you listen to podcasts. Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey, authors of The Barefoot Spirit: How Hardship, Hustle, and Heart Built America’s #1 Wine Brand, turned their best-selling book into an audiobook to take the message where the people are. As nationally recognized speakers, both Houlihan and Harvey noticed the number of people with earbuds on kept increasing. They found people weren’t listening to music, but podcasts and audiobooks, and that sparked the idea. The book is about lessons they learned the hard way – it’s about learning about business by actually doing it. What makes this audiobook unique is that the audience is part of the action, they have including big names as characters such as Ed Asner, and they are the first business book to employ the audio theater platform. As Houlihan explains it, “The best way to convey a business principle is through story and the best way to convey a story is thought business theater.” He adds, “If you really want to engage people, the mobile generation, you have to entertain them.” Watch the episode on C-Suite TV https://c-suitenetwork.com/tv/video/michael-houlihan-bonnie-harvey-the-barefoot-spirit-audiobook/ Learn more about your ad choices. I can't tell you how excited I was when Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey said yes to the Pass the Secret Sauce podcast. If you don't recognize their names, you probably recognize what they founded, what they created. And we're going to get into some of how they created this in this episode. Bonnie and Michael are the founders of Barefoot wines, which today is one of the, if not THE most recognized, and most popular bottles of wine in the US. The incredible story about how they started this basically from nothing. I can't even tell you how much fun I had talking to both of them. In addition to that, Bonnie and Michael are New York Times bestselling authors. The newest projects that they have right now is that they're founders of Business Audio Theatre. They call it BAT. And again, we get into a little bit about what that actually is in this episode. And they've actually given us access to some of the footage from their own productions. If you have any interest in building huge mega brands, there are learnings from this episode that you can take away with that. In this episode we discuss: They discuss their first jobs when they were younger [5:38] Inspiration for creating Barefoot Wines [8:11] Getting ideas for their brand from blue collar workers [10:01] How Bonnie's body part ended up on the largest wine brand in the world [11:22] Bringing Barefoot wine to market [14:06] Excerpt from their book: The Barefoot Spirit: How Hardship, Hustle, and Heart Built America's #1 Wine Brand [14:25] Being rejected by a distributor [16:27] How donating their wines in the early stages increased their sales [18:58] Spreading themselves too thin when scaling their business [21:03] Selling the business and advice for others wanting to sell their business [24:42] Types of clients that would benefit from their consulting firm [32:46] What they look for in a client [34:07] Why they started Business Audio Theater [36:52] Get a free chapter from their audiobook [41:27] Quotable Quotes: It was not following a passion, it was following an opportunity passionately. When you don't know what you're doing and you're broke, you're very humble and you tend to ask a lot of questions. And because you're not from the industry, you don't ask industry people that turned out to be a big strength of ours. Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey are the founders of Barefoot, America’s number one wine brand. They are also the co-authors of the New York Times bestseller, The Barefoot Spirit. They started with virtually no money or wine industry experience and pioneered worthy cause marketing. They now share their innovative approach to business as consultants, authors, workshop leaders, and speakers. In this episode, Michael and Bonnie share how they help companies use their business stories to help instill corporate DNA with their stakeholders and employees resulting in a more engaged team, lower turnover rates, and increased productivity. “When people hear a story, they’re more likely to identify with the principles behind the story.” – Michael Houlihan Why you have to check out today’s podcast: Discover how knowing the company story, the business hardship, hustle, and heart can build a business to success Learn the importance of instilling the corporate DNA and values when onboarding employees Find-out why is it so important that your employees know your company history when they are hired in the first 24 hours Learn More about the 3X Value Growth™ Model Go to www.3xvaluegrowth.com/model Episode Takeaway: Why is it so important that your employees know your company history when they are hired in the first 24 hours? “‘When the cement is wet; you can move it with a trowel when it gets hard; you need a jackhammer’– the thing is when you can move it with a trowel, why not embed the company history in that new employee’s open mind. They’re coming to work, they don’t know what to expect. This is your chance to tell them about your company’s story.’ – Michael Houlihan Episode Takeaway: How to solve employee turnover? “If people are more engaged, if they understand what the principles are of the founder, then they can relate to that and they can relate to everyone they’re working with, and be more of a team player. They can care more about the company that they’re working for, instead of it just being a job. So, it solves the problem of turnover, the number one hidden cost of any company.” – Bonnie Harvey Resources|Links Blogs at www.thebarefootspirit.com & www.consumerbrandbuilders.com Connect with Bonnie Harvey and Michael Houlihan: Website 1: https://thebarefootspirit.com Website 2: https://www.consumerbrandbuilders.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/barefoot_spirit Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BarefootWineFounders

Today's Growth Classics, Growing Business Today, Marketing your business for growth and success
Story Of The Barefoot Spirit Hey guys. I love the title of the podcast. Today’s Growth Growing Business Today because it forces me a couple times a year to look at are we growing businesses today? Or am I using techniques from the 80’s 90’s and even 10 years ago. I caught myself a couple weekends ago telling a story that I have told about 100 times. We have a number of website partners. A lot of them have achieved greatness. One of our partners, Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey are one such couple. Were partnered on a branding website and they became very famous. In the 90’s and 2000’s they created the brand Barefoot and Barefoot Wine. They have a book called the Barefoot Spirit. It is one of the greatest business lessons of the last hundred years. I have heard them speak numerous times. They just spoke at the Secret Knock and The McCormick Place in Chicago. They are very sought after speakers and a lot of their talk is based on their life story. Their book which is their autobiography. They have such a profound story because their story is unbelievable. This is a couple that got a phone call around the mid-nineties. I haven’t heard this story in a few years so if I am off by a year or two, please allow me the freedom of the license of the point of this story. The point of this story is that in the mid 90’s they got an interesting phone call from a friend that says, I am in trouble. He may have mentioned possible bankruptcy. Mike and Bonnie said don’t do that. Let’s see if we can help you. It turns out his frustration was he had a winery. He was not making ends meet. He was currently sitting a tremendous of vats of grapes with no ability either to pay the last years bills or get a new brand or hit the market in time. He had a cash flow challenge. Mike and Bonnie made some sort of a business deal where they put in some money and they were able to save his bacon, if you will, and all of a sudden, with no experience, Mike and Bonnie found themselves in the wine business in the mid 90’s. I want to repeat, they had no experience at this time. Mike and Bonnie’s story of how they got Barefoot. They changed the name of the company. Have you ever seen the footprint on every label? That is Bonnie Harvey’s right foot. Now that I have said this, if you go to any store, a gas station or a high end liquor store, you will see it. The point of this podcast is again, the overarching theme of this series is that the internet often blinds us. Mike and Bonnie’s story has been picked up in at least 100 major magazines. They have been on the news so many times. They coach and counsel so many business owners. Their story is so relevant because they did it completely offline. I don’t know if they have any sales online. But they ended up selling the largest wine brand I believe in the world. The numbers were something like 130,000 cases of wine per year. It was extraordinary. Gallo ended up buying their brand. Barefoot is new a subsidiary of Gallo. How Did They Build a Brand With Almost No Experience? The point of this story is that this couple took over grapes. Not even a full functioning winery. With no experience. They were able to become the largest wine brand in the world. It’s amazing. So the question is how they do it with the second presumption or understanding. They had no money for marketing. No knowledge that every state had different laws for shipping, packaging, displaying wine. Their stories were so amazing. I remember reading the book and never forget Michael Houlihan is standing in front of a liquor store in some kind of costume. A Gumby costume holding a sign, directing traffic to pay attention to Barefoot Wine. They did every type of Gorilla type marketing. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Jason Hartman invites Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey, co-founders of Barefoot Wine, to discuss “out-of-the-box” marketing principles that led to Michael's and Bonnie's highly successful wine business. Though his business card reads, “Head Stomper,” Michael officially served as president and CEO for 19 years. She was Vice President and “The Original Foot” for 19 years. There she had a wide variety of duties, doing whatever was necessary to operate the business. While Michael's role was “big picture visionary,” Bonnie translated his ideas into workable processes and displayed a genius for managing the millions of details that come with a start-up. She proved to possess a rare combination of creativity and business savvy that served Barefoot well. Starting with no money and no knowledge of the wine industry, Michael and Bonnie used out-of-the-box thinking coupled with solid business principles to build a leading national brand. They relied on “worthy cause marketing” instead of conventional advertising to grow a loyal following and promote their favorite causes. Their new book is entitled: The Barefoot Spirit: How Hardship, Hustle and Heart Built a Bestselling Wine. To hear more details, visit: www.SpeakingofWealth.com. Barefoot Wines went on to win the industry's top sales awards. They were selling well over a half a million cases annually when the E&J Gallo family purchased the brand in 2005. Since then, along with Bonnie, Michael has been a valued advisor to large and small corporations and start-ups, offering his real world experience to improve their profitability, grow their brands, and improve their culture. Sales, marketing, and performance-based compensation are his sweet spots. He also donates professional time to non-profits to help them improve their image, increase donations and achieve financial sustainability. Michael is a funny, informative, and inspiring speaker who delivers keynotes for conventions, corporations and national conferences. (Audiences love the quirky Barefoot stories he weaves in with how-to advice they can put into practice right away.) He is also a seminar and webinar leader, a guest lecturer at business and entrepreneurial schools, and a contributor to a variety of publications. Bonnie has a passion for helping young entrepreneurs choose the right path. With her varied “hard-knocks” experience, she offers practical solutions for all aspects of starting a business. She loves showing others how to avoid painful and costly mistakes and directing them toward profitability. Michael and Bonnie coauthor weekly business blogs at www.thebarefootspirit.com and www.thebrandauthority.net.
