In this rich and detailed episode of Distilling the West, Dan and Dave sit down with David Warter, Vice President of E&J Gallo, and Rita Hansen, Senior Director of Distillation, to explore not just the flavors of their exceptional spirits but the deep history behind one of America's most influential distilleries. The conversation spans generations of innovation, from the founding of E&J Gallo to its transformation into a leader in the craft distillation world, particularly with the prestigious Germain Robin brandy line. David and Rita guide Dan and Dave through a tasting of three standout spirits: Germain Robin XO, Germain Robin Single Barrel, and Argonaut Saloon Strength. But beyond the tasting notes, they delve into the historical significance of each, sharing how the heritage of brandy-making in California is reflected in the complex flavors of the XO, the craftsmanship involved in the creation of the Single Barrel, and the bold American spirit captured in Argonaut Saloon Strength. Listeners are treated to a masterclass in distillation history as David and Rita discuss the evolution of Gallo from a large-scale wine producer to a key player in the high-end brandy and craft spirits market. They also reveal how Germain Robin—a once-small, artisanal brandy producer—came to thrive under Gallo's stewardship while maintaining the meticulous techniques that have earned it international acclaim. Dan and Dave offer their tasting impressions throughout, blending their expertise with the historical insights shared by David and Rita. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of history, tradition, and innovation in the world of distillation, and a deep dive into what makes E&J Gallo and Germain Robin icons in the industry.

Bonnie Harvey and Michael Houlihan started Barefoot Wine with $300,000 in debt and almost no knowledge of wine. What they did understand was how to sell it—with a carefree name and label that evoked the beach, and a consistent flavor and low price point that attracted shoppers who normally rejected wine as being too snooty. But winning over that audience took extreme patience, and years of pavement-pounding by Michael. In 2005—twenty years after launch—Barefoot had become ubiquitous, and was acquired by E & J Gallo, one of the biggest wine brands in the world. This episode was produced by J.C. Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey are the Founders of Barefoot, now the world's largest wine brand. Since their successful acquisition by E&J Gallo, they have dedicated their lives to helping other entrepreneurs with the lessons they learned in the process. They are popular keynote speakers, writers, teachers, and regular media guests on the subject of entrepreneurship and business culture including several previous interviews on Critical Mass. Over the past year, Michael and Bonnie have spoken at Oxford, Cambridge, Nanyang University in Singapore, and Keynoted at several events including the Antrepreneurial Center at UCI.    They adopted their New York Times bestseller, The Barefoot Spirit, into a theatrically performed audioplay that was recognized as a 2020 Business Audie Award Finalist by the Audiobook Publisher's Association. That success gave rise to their new project, Business Audio Theatre where they dramatize founder's startup stories in an effort to preserve their legacy and attract, retain, and engage their people. Their Hollywood audio productions are reminiscent of pre-television 1940s radio dramas, complete with actors voicing parts in seminal scenes that demonstrate business principles, complete with sound effects and music. Their most recent production, The Brain Savers, How a Scrappy Startup Transformed Telemedicine and Patient Care chronicles the entrepreneurial journey of Dr Colin McDonald as he and his team overcome financial, technical, and legal obstacles to create a pioneer, interstate, telemedicine company in the early 2000s. Michael and Bonnie created Business Audio Theatre to address the increasing trend in resignations and lack of engagement. They believe that entertaining and gripping stories help listeners identify with the founder's principles and pull for their success.   Michael and Bonnie live in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County California, and host corporate retreats at their wine country estate. -- Critical Mass Business Talk Show is Orange County, CA's longest-running business talk show, focused on offering value and insight to middle-market business leaders in the OC and beyond. Welcome to Episode 1310; Why you should be investing in native digital content Welcome to Wine2Wine Business Forum 2021 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine is an international wine business forum, held annually in Verona Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals eager to develop and grow their wine business worldwide. About this Session: While different marketing campaigns have different goals, most share one thing in common, no matter the medium. The campaign runs, people did or didn't see it, and that's a wrap. Native advertising in the form of content marketing is different. Although a campaign may have a defined ‘window,' most publishers who offer this type of marketing campaign allow the content to live on their website or podcast feed indefinitely. This allows well crafted campaigns to continue to reach new audiences for months, even years. We'll explore this phenomenon through two mini case studies: Fontanafredda's Barolo-centric campaign with VinePair in 2016 that still draws in thousands of new viewers every month, and E&J Gallo's sponsorship of VinePair's Wine 101 podcast. About the Speaker Adam Teeter Adam Teeter is the cofounder and CEO of VinePair, the most read publication about wine, beer and spirits in America. Since founding the publication in 2014 Adam has become recognized as an authority on how to make the drinks world accessible to everyone, and speaks regularly about the ever evolving media landscape. Prior to founding VinePair he was the head of growth and marketing for the news and politics publication Tablet Magazine. He is an adjunct professor at the Columbia School of Journalism, teaching courses on digital media, and the winner of the Left Bank Bordeaux Cup American Wine-Tasting Championship. Apothic Red 2018

The Apothic Red 2018 is one of E & J Gallo's multitude of wine and spirits brands. Gallo was founded in 1933 and is the largest winery in the United States, and is still family-owned. They offer around 80 different wine brands, from Andre's Sparkling wines to single-vineyards high-end wines. Gallo also owns some of the best vineyards in California and routinely wins awards for vineyard management advances.I couldn't find tech notes for the Apothic Red 2018, but notes for the 2016 vintage are available, and the winemaking should be similar. They said Zinfandel leads the blend, then Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. I suspect the "led by" indicates that other red grapes can be added as needed depending on vintage conditions.I know some wine aficionados give Gallo wines a bad rap since Thunderbird, Bartles and James, and inexpensive jug wines are part of their history. But in my opinion, they are masters in creating quality, value-priced wine. The Apothic Red 2018 is available in just about every place that wine is sold. Gallo excels at producing quality wine in large quantities. The Apothic line of wine is a 101 level class in how oak influences the flavor of the wine. The oak flavors for the Apothic Red 2018 are vanilla and mocha. Adding exact oak flavor to wine is not easy; the species of oak matter, such as French or American oak. How the wood is cut makes a difference, I am unsure if the Apothic wines are aged in oak barrels or get the oak by other means. The technotes indicate that the Red blend is aged "on" oak. I have found that when the winery says the wine is aged "in" oak, that means oak barrels are used. "On" oak seems to mean that the winemaker added oak stave or oak chips to the stainless steel vats. An oak barrel gives about 300 bottles of wine, so that high-volume wines need a huge number of barrels.Value-priced wines that use oak as a flavor and not a part of long-term aging do not always have the budget for oak barrels. Maybe the Apothic wines use oak barrels, and maybe they don't; what is important in budget wines is how does it taste, does the oak influence seem real, does it fit the wine. The Apothic Red 2018 has a meticulous winemaking regime to ensure the extraction of flavor from the grapes. This is a rich, fruit-forward wine, but it is not a high alcohol wine. 13.5% alcohol is on the low end of California red wine, so they are getting the rich personality of the wine from extraction and not very ripe grapes. The Apothic wines are everywhere, to the point that I quit noticing them. We have featured wine from the Apothic line over the years, but Apothic Red 2011 is the last time the Red blend made our pages. I think we are past due in checking out what this trendy Red blend has to offer.Apothic Red 2018 Tasting NotesThe color is a deep dark red with black highlights; the front label is an accurate representation of what is in the bottle. The nose is rich and dark; there are red berries, blackberries, ripe, but not too ripe, dusty chocolate, black pepper, oak spice, and toasty vanilla. The Apothic Red 2018 has a very smooth mouthfeel with mixed fruit flavors and interesting textures. It starts with a mix of extracted blackberry and sweet blueberry, followed by Starbucks mocha, a spice hit, and raspberry. The mid-palate brings creamy vanilla, dark chocolate, plum, and sweet cherry. The Apothic Red 2018 is a comfort wine, it has the flavors you want and none you do not want. The tannins are sweet and stay out of the way. The acidity is balanced and allows the flavors to unfold properly. The SummaryThe Apothic Red 2018 is a crowd-pleaser of wine at a very pleasing price. I found it on sale for $8.99.I think of this type of wine as a recipe wine, not a document of what happened in the vineyard that year, but a carefully crafted creation.Terrior driven high-priced wines seem to get all the press, but this is the sort of wine that regular people drink.

The Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose is a $4.99 ALDI exclusive, a Sparkling wine made with the Charmat Method. The Charmat Method is the same process used in the making of Prosecco and is often referred to as the Italian Method though it is used all over the wine world. The back label says this Bubbly was produced and bottled by Burlwood Cellars, Modesto, California. The Burlwood portion is just a brand name that Aldi uses. The Modesto, California part indicates that there is a good chance E and J Gallo had something to do with the making of this Sparkling Rose'.Gallo produces Bear Bros. and Mademoiselle wines for Aldi and is skilled at producing bang-for-the-buck inexpensive wines. They have a huge portfolio but Barefoot Bubbly and Andre's will be similar to Burlwood Cellars. And for five bucks Bubbly those wines are not too bad.Is $4.99 for the Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose too cheap for a drinkable Sparkling wine? The answer is probably not. The Charmat Method introduces the bubbles into the wine by transferring the wine after its first fermentation (just like all other wine) into very large pressurized tanks.Sugar and yeast are added to the tanks and the CO2 that is released by the 2nd fermentation are forced by the pressure back into the wine. This process lasts anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. The more expensive the wine the longer the process. With a 5 dollar Bubbly the second fermentation probably was a few weeks, not a few months. That is a shorter aging period than a comparable still wine. It is quite possible that value-priced Bubbly takes less time to get ready for sale than still wine.Aldi and Burlwood do not mention which grapes were used for the Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose. Rose' is typically red grapes, the color comes from limited contact with the skins, but there are White grapes that are very red.A Brut Sparkling wine is a dry or not sweet wine. It is often hard to tell just how sweet a Sparkling wine is because the acidity in the wine balances the sweetness. The Burlwood Cellars Brut Roses a party wine, four bottles of Bubbly for twenty bucks. That will get the party started. But it does have to taste good. It does not have to be complicated or have layers of flavor, but what is in your glass has to be enjoyable. So on to the Tasting portion of the review.Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose Tasting NotesThe first thing to note is that this Sparkling wine did not have a cage and cork, but a twist-off resealable top. The color is a very pretty Barbie doll pink with a good supply of bubbles. The nose is, well it smells just like Rose' Bubbly, there is strawberry, faint yeasty bread, a bit of minerality, a little citrus, and a hint of spice. How does it taste? Better than any $4.99 Bubbly has a right to taste. It starts with black cherry, there is a slight cherry cough drop feel but not pronounced, dried strawberry, a salty, nutty thing (on lees?), a brush of minerality, enough to give this Sparkling wine a needed tight edge. The mid-palate adds blood orange and soft plum. The acidity is very well-balanced. The acidity in cheap Bubbles often is out of whack and can bite, but not with the Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose. The SummaryThe Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose is a solid party wine or a Tuesday night watching Netflix wine.I know you usually do not have great expectations for a $4.99 wine, but this Bubbly actually tastes good and has no rough edges or defects that you just have to live within five bucks Bubbly.Short review: The Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose is way better than you thought.

When you look at, you know, the the book, the first 90 days, mind's been nothing like that. So throw in. See on on about week four, there was a ski accident which led to shoulder surgery right in the middle of COVID. But on the other hand, I will say for 2020 if I pick the one person who made the most appropriate move, or for a COVID that had not yet become evident, as opposed to the middle of COVID, I nominate you as being you know, right up there at the top to have left airlines that that you know, is not going to be working a hell of a lot in COVID for her for a place that's going to, you know, have some interesting challenges to how they are going to operate totally differently, but are are certainly going to be important for how people handle COVID it's, I couldn't imagine a more perfect segue, if you will, to to survival. So I think that was fabulous. Rob Daugherty, Lowes 2:17Yeah, I tell you what, by by the time I finished this bottle, I will have told you I had the insight that this was going to happen and the airlines are crashed and Lowe's is an essential employer with an essential business would completely take off but I really haven't started yet. I'll I can't tell that story. So it was it was definitely you know, those those the things and choices you make it at certain times you don't quite know how they're gonna get a turnout. And this is certainly been a been a blessing and certainly excited to to be here. Chris Hoyt 2:49Well, I have a. Oh, go ahead Gerry Gerry Crispin 2:52I was just gonna say how do you handle the back and forth with family because you still have a house in Dallas, right? You know, so we were figuring it out, you know, during the kind of COVID times I spent a lot of time back in Dallas and we're still working remote for the most part here at Lowe's so it's you know, with the kids kind of doing remote school that's been you know, that's been a make it a little bit easier to where they can come out here and and vice versa. Chris Hoyt 3:35Well, it took me as you as you probably saw it took me five good minutes to get into this bottle. By the nature of Luke’s role, he has a great pulse on consumer behavior around wine and spirits, and he’s tapped into what’s selling at both a category and brand level. Ravenswood Vintners Blend Zinfandel 2017

The StoryThe Ravenswood Vintners Blend Zinfandel 2017 is 76% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah, and 3% Mixed Blacks (mixed blacks is the old school way of saying various Red wine grapes) sourced from more than one California grape growing AVA. That actually is the tech notes for the 2016 vintage, about a year ago the brand owners, Constellation sold Ravenswood and about 30 other wine brands to E and J Gallo.I imagine that since they no longer owned the brand they didn't go through the expense of doing marketing materials. Before there was Constellation there was Joel Peterson who founded Ravenswood in the 1970s. It was Joel Peterson who came up with the Vintners Blend which at one time was the largest selling ZInfandel in the US. Even though Peterson no longer owned the brand he was still active in the winemaking for Ravenswood.Gallo only bought the brand, not the winery or the tasting room, so Joel Peterson no longer has a relationship with the Ravenswood brand. I do not know what Gallo's plan is for the Ravenswood brand, but it won't and can't be the same. And that is a bit of the end of an era for me because back in 1994 or 1995 Ravenswood Vintners Blend was the first wine that opened up my palate to the possibilities of wine. Before the Vintners Blend, I never went to a liquor store to specifically purchase a wine. It was the wine that started my wine journey that is still unfolding. So let's get on with discussing the Ravenswood Vintners Blend Zinfandel 2017. Petite Sirah is the secret weapon in many value-priced Zinfandel wines, it adds Red berry flavors, a different spice profile and good acidity to Zinfandel. This ZIn used natural yeast for fermentation.Natural yeast is the yeast that floats in the air and attaches itself to the grape skin, it is seen as a more perfect match than commercial yeast. Though different commercial yeasts can bring out different elements in wine, so it is basically the winemakers' call. The wine was aged in French oak for 9 months with 35% the oak new. All of these are excellent technical notes for a wine that I found for $9.99. The alcohol content is 13.5%. Ravenswood Vintners Blend Zinfandel 2017 Tasting NotesThe color is a slightly see-thru cherry red. The nose is a little smokey and spicy, with ripe blackberry, spice, a little toasted vanilla, black pepper, and raspberry. This is a balanced and tasty ZInfandel, slightly rustic, but that's how I like my Zinfandel. It starts with smooth blueberry, blood orange, spice, and black pepper. Followed by blackberry, creamy vanilla, bitter dark chocolate, tart cranberry, and more spice. The tannins are smooth and sweet, the acidity proves a strong backbone. The finish is softer than the body of the wine and does linger on and on.The Summary I am glad to find the Ravenswood Vintners Blend Zinfandel 2017 a delicious well-made wine. It didn't "WOW" me like the first time back in the 90s, but I have sampled a lot of wine since then and am probably much harder to impress. Though the 1994 or 1995 Ravenswood Vintners Blend was a bottle of really good wine, it sort of went the wine version of viral. I remember going to a wine shop looking for it when most of the vintage had been sold and the wine shop had priced what they had left at around $25 when it was about ten bucks originally. Price gouging was good for me at that point because it reinforced the notion that I liked an excellent bottle of wine. Having confidence in your wine selection is important, especially with value-priced wine since wine marketing leaves the impression that a  bottle isn't good enough unless to sell for a certain price. So, thanks to Ravenswood for teaching me that a good bottle of wine does not need to be expensive, and sometimes a value-priced wine can beat the big boys.

One of Sonoma’s favorite tourist spots the Ravenswood tasting room has closed. The Ravenswood brand was one of 30 that was spun off by New York based Constellation Brands and purchased by E&J Gallo, but the 12 acre property and the tasting room was not part of the deal.McDonald’s, Burger King and KFC are becoming increasingly more common sights in Italy’s urban centers. Jeremy Parzen pens a post on fast food versus organic and big farming in Italy. When was the last time you cut out drinking alcohol of any type? John Fodera an authority of all things Tuscan decided to take just such a break. Calling it “The Purge”, he sighted palate fatigue and decided to abstain for two weeks. He took notes of how his body responded, one of the most interesting being the amount of weight he lost. It’s not surprising to anyone in beverage journalism that there is a culture of “pay to play”. Offers of free samples, meals and trips in exchange for (wink wink) favorable endorsements are ubiquitous. Should there be more transparency in the wine writing business? Bill and I discuss these topics and many more in this weeks addition of VinoWeek. Thanks to everyone for listening. Cheers! The wine of the week is the 2017 Substance Cabernet Sauvignon. Charles Smith former rock band promoter turned vintner is the motivation behind this project. Charles first passion is Syrah and he makes a number of serious ones. The Wines of Substance program is focused on producing wines that are true to varietal type, of good value and can be enjoyed now. It’s 100% Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and a blend of nine different vineyards. A whole berry fermentation with native yeast followed by 35 days on the skins, the wine was aged for twelve months, 50% in new French oak barriques. A deep ruby color and black fruit nose, with currants, violets, vanilla and cedar notes. This Cabernet is medium to full bodied showing more elegance than the 2016 offering. It’s very easy to drink and you would be hard pressed to find another Cabernet Sauvignon of this quality at this price point. 14.5 % alc $15

The Dark Horse Brut Sparkling Wine is a non-vintage Chardonnay based Bubbly sourced from grapes grown in more than one California grape growing/wine-producing AVA. Dark Horse is one of E & J Gallo's (the largest family owned winery in the US) many wine labels, here are links to our posts on  Dark Horse Double Down Red and the 2014 Dark Horse Cabernet Sauvignon . Brut indicates that the Dark Horse is a dry or nor sweet Bubbly and Gallo owns top-notch vineyards thru-out California, so they have many sources for good quality Chardonnay grapes. Gallo and Dark Horse don't give out a great deal on information about the Bubbly, the website is more of a "lifestyle" site with little actual wine technical info. To the point where they don't indicate if this Sparkling wine was made in the Traditional Method (like Champagne) or the Charmat Method (like Prosecco). This isn't scientific but I have found that Bubbly that was made in the Traditional Method have that or Champenois Method (the same thing, this is what they call it in France) featured prominently on the label and Bubbly made in the Charmat Method tend to skip any mention of it. I don't know why, especially in this price range, but if you do either method with skill you can produce some fine tasting Bubbles. The alcohol content is 12%. The color is pale golden yellow is loads of active bubbles. On way you can tell a Champagne from a Prosecco is that the Champagne should have very tiny bubbles, but I find that figuring out whether the bubbles are tiny or very tiny isn't that easy. The nose is crisp and clean and slightly nectar sweet, there are flowers, and peach, apple, pear, soft lemon, and grapefruit. This is a crisp, clean Bubbly with little or no yeasty flavor (so that can indicate Charmat Method, right?). It tastes of crisp apple and pear, dry, with good lip smacking acidity, not a super complicated Bubbly, but a very pleasing flavor. The mid-palate offers a little minerality, a little salty, nutty sensation, and a slap of lemon/lime. Summary * The Dark Horse Brut is a well-made Bubbly, crisp and lean, with good control of the acidity * I have now decided that the bubbles are actually very tiny and not just tiny, but I still would guess the Charmat Method * The lip-smacking acidity and the salty/nutty thing on the mid-palate will having you reaching for your glass again and again * The dry, yet nectar sweet flavor profile is very enticing, a nice yin/yang effect * You should be able to find it selling for between $10 and $15 is the sweet spot for this type of California Bubbly. Too cheap and they tend to rush things and you shouldn't rush Sparkling wine, in this price range is where they take a little extra time to do it right

In this episode we had the pleasure of speaking with Breana Royal of Ernest & Julio Gallo.  In this episode we speak to Brenae about:  Drinking Apothic Red and watching Jeopardy Having a “seat at the table” Tending to 132 year old vines Surviving Harvest Knowing that she is exactly where she is supposed to be Brenae's Bio  Brenae Royal grew up in the town of Atwater, in California's Central Valley. “I come from a family of teachers and doctors, so when I started raising pigs, my family thought, where did she fall off?” Brenae says, laughing. When asked about her first farming memories, she recalls picking weeds and planting flowers with her grandmother. “My grandmother has a ginormous garden.” As the Vineyard Manager for the 575-acre Monte Rosso Vineyard on the eastern hills of Sonoma Valley, one the most acclaimed winegrowing sites in California, Brenae might have her grandmother beat. Brenae put her passion to action at a young age, joining 4-H at 12 and becoming an officer in the Future Farmers of America when she was 17. The program took her all over California and immersed her in a world she knew she wanted to be a part of for the rest of her life. Brenae studied Crops and Horticulture Science at California State University, Chico and during her senior year, after developing a palate for bold red wines, decided to pursue a career in viticulture. She joined E. & J. Gallo Winery in 2013 as an Operations and Viticulture Intern and quickly established a relationship with an important mentor, winemaker Deborah Juergenson. “Deb started out as one of the first few women winemakers in a very male-dominated field. It's been amazing to have her as a mentor, both professionally and personally,” Brenae says. “Viticulture is still very male-dominated, so to drive more inclusion and diversity is very much an uphill battle.” It's a battle that Brenae has done anything but back down from. Since joining Gallo, Brenae has farmed Monte Rosso Vineyard with increasing levels of responsibility. In addition to her internship, Brenae also served as Viticulture Technician for 11 months before being named Vineyard Manager in 2015. Monte Rosso is home to some of the oldest producing grapevines in California and has garnered a near- mythic reputation among winemakers. “When I started, it was intimidating. Here I am as this 24-year-old coming into to manage Monte Rosso, a world-renowned vineyard and one of the oldest in the state. It's difficult and complex. Our vines range from four months old to over 130 years old, so it's a lot to take on, but I love it,” she says. “We've brought a lot of technology and innovation to the vineyard, so much so that we can be farming up to three different wines within the same block.” Mount Peak Winery, like Brenae, is singularly focused on expressing Monte Rosso's uniqueness. “When our winemaker Mark Williams visits, it's not uncommon to hop in my truck and then hike into his favorite blocks. It's a hands-on approach to winemaking, and he's very honored to work with the fruit.” When asked how Monte Rosso's distinct terroir shows up in the bottle, Brenae quickly answers. “Acidity,” she declares, “and minerality and spice.” Part of the vineyard's mystique is that its signature qualities seem impervious to producer and variety. “You can taste Monte Rosso wines blind and recognize them immediately,” she adds. Brenae is doing everything in her power to keep it that way. “My goal is always to preserve what is special about Monte Rosso,” she says. “Hopefully it will be producing for another 132 years.” The Last Sip: When you finish your day and sit down with your favorite glass of wine, what is on your music playlist?
