A few weeks ago, far-right rioters gathered outside a hotel hosting asylum seekers in Rotherham and tried to set it on fire. Across the country this horrific act of violence was replicated, as mosques, libraries and people driving home from work came under attack. But in the face of this racist and Islamophobic violence, people gathered to protest the presence of the far right in their communities and to rebuild after the attacks. It was people showing solidarity with their neighbours which ultimately seemed to stem the riots. As the dust settles on the violence, how do we combat the rise of the far right? Are economic deprivation and austerity to blame for that week of violence? And can communities come together to combat racism and Islamophobia? The Black Cross Healthcare Collective formed after the WTO protests of 1999, seeing a need for medical care that specifically served people who were attending direct actions, demonstrations and political protests. In the early 2000s they pioneered community-supported trials to find a way to treat pepper spray exposure. These trials resulted in an antidote that has been used in street protests internationally. Produced by Jodi Darby, Honna Veerkamp and Erin Yanke.

My friendship with Ryan Patterson has spanned over a quarter of century at this point. We met way back in the day when he was playing in National Acrobat with his brother Evan. We became friends and have supported each other's creative efforts for the past several decades. The list of bands and creative endeavors spans from his bands Fotocrime, Coliseum, Black Cross and National Acrobat (among others) to include design work, promoting shows and operating his design and merchandise company Shirt Killer. It was a pleasure catching up with Ryan and I feel fortunate to call him Friend. Intro: “All the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “The Stranger” – C.L.S.M.

Today's episode is a departure from our assassins vs. templars series. We're taking a look into a role named the Black Cross. This role is held by one person and works within the Templar Order for reform. But they also have the right to work with the assassins. So are they a tool that can be used by the assassins as well? We take a look at all these questions and more, as well as all the lore behind the origin of the Black Cross. A few weeks from now, the new record by Jaye Jayle will hit the (digital) shelves and we were quite taken with it, because it fits like a glove to what we like. No, this is not Avantgarde Death Black Gothic Post-Drum'n'Bass, this is music without real borders, but for everyone who loves music for the soul. This is music in the vein of Edwards, Cohen, Johnson. Music that speaks directly to your core and that has the potential of becoming a cult classic - so you join before the hype sets in. Enjoy our interview with Evan Patterson and the many things he tells us about the record, its process and much more. Evan is surely not anybody in our little global scene as many of his bands have become well-known: The National Acrobat, Breather Resist, Black Cross, Black Widows, Young Widows and for a few years he's writing and publishing music as Jaye Jayle. What that name means is also explained in our interview, as well as why the new music has such a hopeful, wonderful, soulful sound in all its splendour and what Ben Chisholm has to do with it. Enjoy!
Note from Pepper: This episode is special for me. J Robbins is my favorite producer and I never in a million years thought I would get the chance to have a conversation with him. Yay! Robbins began his career as a bassist for Government Issue, and has also led five of his own bands: Jawbox, Rollkicker Laydown, Burning Airlines, Channels, and Office of Future Plans. He was a touring bassist for Scream and played bass on the debut 7" from Jack Potential, which was issued by DeSoto Records in 1993. More recently he played bass in Report Suspicious Activity with Vic Bondi, which released two albums on Alternative Tentacles Records. In 2011, Robbins, along with Kerosene 454's drummer and fellow Channels bandmate Darren Zentek, bassist Brooks Harlan, and guitarist/cellist Gordon Withers, released an EP under the name Office of Future Plans. The band, who had been playing since 2009 and released an album on Dischord Records in November 2011, but as of October 2016, they are not together anymore. In May 31, 2019, J. Robbins released his first solo album, Un-Becoming. Robbins is also a successful producer and engineer for bands such as Ponytail, Clutch (and side project The Bakerton Group), Jets to Brazil, Hey Mercedes, Shiner, Mock Orange, The Pauses, The Life and Times, Miranda Sound, Time Spent Driving, Faraquet, The Dismemberment Plan, The Monorchid, The Promise Ring, Dwindle, Pilot to Gunner, Paint It Black, None More Black, Jawbreaker, Discount, Against Me!, Goodbye Soundscape, Modern Life is War, Stapleton, Murder By Death, mewithoutYou, Black Cross (hardcore), Lemuria, Caustic Casanova, The Sword, Debate (from Sao Paulo, Brazil), Coliseum, Hammer No More the Fingers, Small Brown Bike, Broadcaster, Noyo Mathis and Nakatomi Plaza. In our second Praxiscast interview we talk to Hannah Webb, practising criminal barrister and co-chair of the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers, about the ongoing strike by barristers in the criminal courts, the pressure and hideously low pay faced by (young) barristers, and what the decade-long cut to legal funding has done to your chances of getting a fair trial with a court staff that's had a good night's sleep for once ... Such an awesome guest this week! Rob Pennington is well known to so many punk rock and hardcore kids from the mid 90's to the early 00's. As a member of Endpoint, they carved a path for the Louisville KY scene that would endure for decades to come. As the frontman for By The Grace Of God, Pennington & his bandmates took a "speak from gut & heart" approach to their lyrics by taking on heavy subject matter (organized religion, politics, corporate greed). Never one to rest, he continued on his career & education path with the same fervor as was evident in his music. This is a wonderful conversation with an even more wonderful human being. You're all gonna love this one!

Picture a sleepy small town in Western Pennsylvania filled with old brick buildings, 100 year old churches, old abandon manufaturing plants surrounded by woods and farmland. Now picture this smally popluated town filled with a a hotbed of paranormal activity, UFO sightings and spots so haunted your blood runs cold. Butler, Pennsylvania is a quiet community nestled below Pittsburgh, filled with rolling hills, winding rivers and the infamous place they call, The Black Cross. This spot is so terrifying we had to bring you what happened when we went to investigate. Dense woods came alive with haunted sounds and apparitions, as we entered. So we went to a place Butler residents flocked to yearly, the Butler Paranormal Convention to tell their tales of UFO encounters, ghosts and poltergeist in their homes and business and beasts in the forests. The complete audiobook is available for purchase at Audible.com: https://tinyurl.com/9cwuymm8 The Old Stone House and Other Stories By Anna Katharine Green Narrated by Kristina Rothe 1) "The Old Stone House" 2) "A Memorable Night" 3) "The Black Cross" 4) "A Mysterious Case" 5) "Shall He Wed Her?" Although Anna Katharine Green was best known as a crime novelist, this anthology is essentially a collection of horror stories. The Old Stone House is the history of a disastrous love triangle involving a coquettish young girl and two ruthless men determined to win her heart. The other stories share the theme of a manipulative woman whose scheming places the people associated with her in difficult and unfamiliar situations.
When I was in high school there were several bands that I considered the soundtrack of the youth if that era had a house band it was the Louisville hardcore band Endpoint> Whenever I could I traveled to shows around the Midwest to Endpoint. At the end of their 7-year run, they played an emotional and compassionate style of hardcore that evolved from their early days playing metal-influenced punk. They were an amazing band and at the core, the beating heart of the music was vocalist Robert Pennington. He has fronted 11 bands including Endpoint, By the Grace of God, and Black Cross to name a few. I am very honored to talk with Robert Pennington Ph.D. about a variety of topics. The influence of the punk rock paperboy, History of Louisville hardcore, how annoying Nirvana becoming cool was for old punks, the gig where Endpoint matured as a band on stage, the motivations of returning to hardcore with By the Grace of God. That is just the first 35 minutes. After 35:00 We switch gears and talk about Rob’s academic career. You see we ended up on a similar path from punk rocker to a special educator. Rob however is a researcher and lecturer teaching special educators. As someone who currently spends 5 days a week in that type of classroom for the day job, it was fun for me to pick his brain on education. We also get into how Hardcore music prepared us for thinking in terms of social justice in the classroom and staying calm during violent tantrums. If you stick around to the 1:04 mark we talk about our favorite Vegan Restaurants when traveling. The 1st episode is about Ye Olde Black Cross in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. A 400 year building that started life as a blacksmiths cottage and went on to become a coaching Inn and now a pub. The history ties together nicely with the ghost tales with a visit from a King and tales of hangings in the courtyard which is now the pubs garden.

I’ve counted Ryan Patterson part of my inner circle of friends for over 2 decades, having met him back in the late 90’s when he was playing in a band called The National Acrobat. I’ve been tracking his career ever since, through a series of great bands including Coliseum, Black Cross among others. Ryan’s newest creative output is manifested in Fotocrime who’s debut LP “Principle of Pain” was released on his own Auxiliary Records in the US and Golden Antenna in Europe. Ryan and I get into all of the music stuff as well as some significant changes that have effected his life. Intro: “Gods in the Dark” – Fotocrime Outro: “Love in the Dark” - Fotocrime
Some podcasts that are talking about anarchist black cross abolition movements and also some snippets from prison radio.
Rob Pennington is a pillar of Louisville hardcore and punk. Having fronted the bands Endpoint, By the Grace of God, and Black Cross, his musical imprint is heavy, loud, and fierce. He's been playing in bands since high school, but he's managed to build and maintain a successful career in education, working with students with severe mental disabilities. Before his move to North Carolina, he sat down with JC to talk about behavioral therapy, the evolution of Endpoint, playing Cahoot's, and more... This episode is sponsored by Heine Bros. In GBA 295 we get better acquainted with Joseph. He talks about acting, anti-bullying advocacy, impostor syndrome, sexuality, vulnerability, social commentary and so much more. We also spend a good chunk of the beginning of our conversation talking about activism and action within the current political climate, which includes a potted history of my own (pretty inactive) activism, the rise of modern fascism, the triggering of Article 50 and the importance of defending migrant rights and showing solidarity. "ON THE PEOPLES TIME": "BLACK CROSS AND PANTHER UNITY" SPECIAL GUEST KING SAMIR AND GENERAL TAKO
This week on the Final Straw, we air a conversation Bursts had with a member of New York City Anarchist Black Cross, heretoforth known as nyc-abc. For a good portion of the hour we speak about this activists views on anarchist support for prisoners and long term liberation prisoners. We also talk about the work that NYC-ABC does including: prisoner-writing nights; the Running Down The Walls event coordinated with numerous folks on the outside and incarcerated comrades; their recently unvailed Project FANG ( with help from Sac Prisoner Support) which sets aside regular visitation funds for animal and earth liberation prisoners and their loved ones; their U.S. Political Prisoner graphic guide updated monthly; and more. You can find out more about NYC-ABC on their website at http://nycabc.wordpress.com, or find them on the various and insidious social media platforms out there. For the last 10 minutes, here is a musical track to get you into the holiday spirit, and to beckon some much-needed rains in this area to put out the fires: Klarträumer, meaning Lucid Dream. This is Deluge from their album, Aether. Deluge is from Metz, Lorraine in France. More from them and other awesome dark and heavy music with good politics can be found at http://thedarkskiesaboveus.blogspot.com 2016 Former Political Prisoner Panel pt2 Podcast Also of note, in a few days we'll be releasing the second half of the Former Political Prisoner Panel from the 2016 North American Anarchist Black Cross conference in Denver. This year we heard from Sekuo Kombui, Daniel McGowan, Kazi Toure and John Tucker. To hear the first portion and check out brief bio's of these folks visit: Part 1, 2016 IWOC call for support for James Shelby When you have a minute (literally, one minute) please call WMCC Prison Warden Sherie Korneman in Missouri at (816) 632-1390 and say, "I am calling to do a wellness check on James Shelby, prisoner number 41244, my friend told me his life is in danger to medical negligence. If he was not sent back to the hospital after November 14th, he needs to be taken immediately." Again, that name and number is Warden Sherie Korneman at (816) 632-1390. #NoDAPL: Standing Rock camp threatened with eviction As many of you have probabaly heard, the Standing Rock camp for resisting the Dakota Access pipeline has recently been issued an eviction notice to take effect on December 5th (though they are *generously* granting people a so called "free speech zone" well away from the camp and sacred lands). Updates from the camp have been flying out fast in recent weeks, most notably having to do with the police and army's use of force essentially being tantamount to torture and brutality. In the wake of the eviction notice, there had been a call from standing rock for a broadening of tactics for people wanting to stand in solidarity with water protectors. To that end, there is a collection of names and addresses of people directly related to the Dakota access pipeline which you can use as you see fit; the authors of the peice are very clear to state that they do not endorse so called "illegal activity, but that the list is for education and outreach purposes only". However, I think that it is also safe to say that people should use their discretions when coming up with any actions they would like to see happen. You can see this full article, plus the list of names and addresses, check out: https://itsgoingdown.org/nodapl-indigenous-land-defense-strategic-solidarity-pressuring-power-capital/ Portland organizing Please help to build Portland's movement total and collective liberation! Please donate now! Many people have been outraged by the election, Standing Rock, Prison Industrial Complex, white supremacy and capitalism in general. We are all fed up and need to take a stand. The left movement in general is grossly underfunded and inhibits our ability to control the narrative with social media and of course trumping the corporate media. Many activists are getting arrested and charged for all kinds of things. We need to keep our communities safe. However the movement needs funds to actually move forward and fix this whole system and not because it's broken! It's because we need to build something new! Not fix broken things. It was never a broken system and was meant to do exactly what it was doing! Please help! Ten years ago, Mark Crees was standing in a paddock, pacing in circles, looking for something he'd lost. Not a trinket or toy - Mark had lost the biggest thing he'd ever known - his God. And in that state of profound emptiness, he had to figure out how to fill a life that had previously been stuffed to the brim with religion. Contact Mic returns with an episode about love and truth, faith and connection, and learning to truly live in the present.
Ryan has been a long time punk musician being in bands like, Black Cross, Black God, Whips/Chains and Coliseum. Coliseum has been the main constant in terms of his music career, the band starting out in 2003 and most recently releasing their latest album Anxiety's Kiss on Deathwish Records. Ryan also runs and owns Shirtkiller.com which provides merchandise sales for a large roster of alternative bands. He is also a graphic designer and has provided art designs for records and merchandise for a whole host of bands through the years. I have been a huge fan of his work through the years so it was a great pleasure to get to chat to him. A very honest and respectful guy! I hope you enjoy this episode.

Visit us at www.paranormalunderground.net! In this episode of Paranormal Underground Radio, we speak with Ryleigh and Stephen Black of Black Cross Paranormal. The team is a family-based paranormal research team that considers themselves very fortunate to have had the opportunities that they've had. They have investigated with many knowledgeable individuals across the U.S. Black Cross Paranormal consists of Ryleigh, Stephen, and their son Ryan Black. They believe that Ryleigh has the gift of being an empath. She is a beacon and unknowingly naturally draws out and attracts the spirits. Ryleigh grew up on a reservation in Arizona and learned the beliefs and ways of the Wiccan religion. She then moved to the East Coast and was raised in a house full of spirits! She was always interested in spirits and would read everything she could get her hands on with regards to hauntings and paranormal activity. Ryleigh founded Black Cross Paranormal in 2008. Stephen grew up with the teachings of the Roman Catholic religion. He had never experienced anything paranormal or unusual whatsoever until he was well into his '30s! His very first experience was one that changed his outlook forever! He witnessed a full-body apparition! This made him question all he was taught, and he now knew there was so much more than just Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory! This single experience set Stephen on his path of investigating and exploring the unknown! Co-founding BCP in 2008, Stephen and Ryleigh began their paranormal journey together! Ryan is is being raised under the same religious practices as Stephen, but he also has knowledge and respect for other religions, including the Wiccan practices. He has been fascinated by the paranormal for many years, and at the age of 12, he started investigating alongside with the rest of the family. Not only has he learned so very much, but he is a true professional and has investigated side by side with some very big names in the field.Air Date: September 19, 2013 Topic: Paranormal Theory, Paranormal Investigation Guests: Ryleigh and Stephen Black Hosts: Karen Frazier, Rick Hale Producer: Cheryl Knight
