In episode 262 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked back in with Duncan Craig OBE. Duncan is the Founder and CEO of We Are Survivors (WAS), formerly known as Survivors Manchester. We first checked in with Duncan in JCIP #147 where we charted his journey starting the charity many years ago, being recognised for his work with an Order of The British Empire (OBE), the conversation at that point for male survivors of abuse, Duncan's own story of survivorship and all of the emotions associated with that alongside his sexuality as a gay man. In Part 2 of Duncan's journey, we discuss: the state of play today in the conversation around male survivors, why organisations like WAS bridge the gap between the rhetoric of ‘reach out' vs the reality of what support there is for male survivors when they do reach out and are male survivors still counted as victims of Violence Against Women and Girls? We also discuss his work with the new Labour government and the work WAS do in prisons and the relationship between abuse and the prison pathway. We then move onto the portrayal of stories of male abuse in popular media. We discuss the role that popular shows like Netflix's Baby Reindeer, as well as Channel 5's ‘My Wife: My Abuser' in highlighting these stories, as well as the complexities around public consumption of these very heavy topics. For Duncan's continued mental health journey, we discuss his growth in understanding of awareness of his own survivorship and a period of depression he went through in 2022 and how he recovered from it. We finish the topic by exploring his feelings around his role as CEO of WAS and the decisions he is contemplating around when is the right time to step down from it, and the danger of staying too long as a Founder of a business. Phil Manzanera is one of the UK's best-known musicians and record producers, having shot to prominence in the early ‘70's as the lead guitarist with the seminal band, Roxy Music. He is widely acknowledged as one of the world's leading guitarists and remains in huge demand.  Roxy Music were inducted into  the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019 and recently Phil was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to music. He was born to a British father and Colombian mother and has collaborated with musicians from South and Latin America, South Africa, Cuba and continental Europe. His recent album releases  include The Liberation Project: Songs That Made us Free,  Corroncho 2 and Live in Japan as well as The Ghost from Santiago that he did with Split Enz's Tim Finn. At 73, Phil is now in his fourth decade as a professional musician.  He joined Roxy Music in 1972, aged 21,  as lead guitarist. The world rediscovered Roxy Music. In the summer of 2003 Roxy again played in the US and Europe. 2010 saw Roxy Music thrilling fans at Festivals in the UK, Europe and Japan, which was followed by a Winter UK tour, and dates in Australia and New Zealand.  As a writer, producer and solo artist, Phil Manzanera has worked with many of the luminaries of modern music, such as Steve Winwood, David Gilmour, John Cale, Godley and Creme, Nico (Velvet Underground) and John Wetton (King Crimson, Asia). He has co-written material with many artists, including Brian Eno, Tim Finn and David Gilmour. Phil co-wrote Pink Floyd's single ‘One Slip'from their 1988 ‘Momentary Lapse of Reason' album. TALK ART EXCLUSIVE! We meet Sir Antony Gormley OBE RA to discuss his forthcoming solo show 'Aerial' at White Cube New York, USA and his epic new 'Time Horizon' public installation of 100 sculptures which has just opened at Houghton Hall, Norfolk, UK. We explore his entire career across this intimate, highly detailed, feature-length special episode recorded in person at his London studio.Antony Gormley is widely acclaimed for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space. Gormley's work is concerned with the experience of being in the world and an expression of how it feels to be alive. Through a critical engagement with his own physical existence, Gormley identifies art as a place where new behaviours, thoughts and feelings can arise. For him, art can be a place of becoming where, collectively, we can think about our role as creators of the future: ‘I want it to be about life. I want it to be about potential.'We explore his new works made for ‘Aerial', an exhibition by Antony Gormley in New York, in which the artist considers sculpture as an instrument for proprioception – the body's innate capacity to sense and perceive its position, movements and orientation in relation to itself and the environment. The exhibition features two recent developments in Gormley's practice: one explores physical proximity in mass and scale, where two over-life-size bodies merge as one, while the other endeavours to catalyse space almost without mass.Whilst 'Time Horizon', one of Antony Gormley's most spectacular large-scale installations, is currently being shown across the grounds and through the house at Houghton Hall in Norfolk. Featuring 100 life-size sculptures, the works are distributed across 300 acres of the park, the furthest away being approximately 1.5 miles on the West Avenue. The cast-iron sculptures, each weighing 620kg and standing at an average of 191cm, are installed at the same datum level to create a single horizontal plane across the landscape. Some works are buried, allowing only a part of the head to be visible, while others are buried to the chest or knees according to the topography. Only occasionally do they stand on the existing surface. Around a quarter of the works are placed on concrete columns that vary from a few centimetres high to rising four meters off the ground.Gormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999, the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013. In the first of a two part series, this month, Dogs with Jobs presenter Kate Fairweather visits the charity, Medical Detection Dogs and hears from its CEO, Dr. Claire Guest. Claire led the team responsible for the world's first study of canine detection of bladder cancer, which was published in the BMJ in September 2004. She founded the charity on little more than anecdotes and what was at the time - despite being published in the BMJ -  considered to be an eccentric conviction that dogs' olfactory superpowers could bring something new to the table in cancer research. In a wide ranging conversation, Claire talks candidly about how her first dog, Daisy, detected her own breast cancer. She explains the charity's work in the key area of bio detection (the other is medical alert assistance dogs, which is the subject of a separate  episode).  We are introduced to Claire's three pet dogs, who work as detection dogs at the charity's headquarters. Florin is a red Labrador, whose detection work data is being shared with a research team at M.I.T. in Boston to help them understand and ‘map' how a dog perceives “bio markers” - which means the subtle changes in scent that indicate the changes in a human body caused by cancer or other disease. The data is feeding into the creation of an effective artificial intelligence algorithm for prostate cancer detection. Iggy and Asher are rescue dogs, for whom life as a pet didn't work out and who have settled since being given a job. Superstar Asher started on malaria and moved onto Covid-19. (It is unusual it is rare to be redeployed in this line of work and bio detection dogs tend to specialise for their whole career.  Update: in the King's Birthday Honours in June 2023, Claire was recognised for her work with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Medical Knowledge, Public Health and Wellbeing. As we note in this episode, she started the charity 15 years ago based on little more than a hunch that dogs had plenty to teach us about scent. What a long way it's come since then. How humans transfer knowledge through time might affect our ability to think. With the advent of the internet, any topic we want to know about is instantly available with the touch of a smartphone button. With so much knowledge at our fingertips, what is there left for our brains to do? At a time when we seem to be stripping all value from the idea of knowing things — no need for math, no need for map-reading, no need for memorization — are we risking our ability to think? Simon Winchester takes a deep dive into learning and the human mind, and forces us to ponder what rational humans are becoming. Shermer and Winchester discuss: how to become a professional writer • ChatGPT, GPT-4, and AI • knowledge as justified true belief • What is truth? • Are we living in a post-truth world? • education, past and present • books and the printing press • the history and future of encyclopedias • museums: repatriating objects taken during colonialism • print and broadcast journalism • internet and knowledge. Simon Winchester is the acclaimed author of many books, including The Professor and the Madman, The Men Who United the States, The Perfectionists, The Map That Changed the World: William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology, The Man Who Loved China, A Crack in the Edge of the World: America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906, Land: How the Hunger for Ownership Shaped the Modern World, and Krakatoa, most of which were New York Times bestsellers and appeared on numerous best and notable lists. In 2006, Winchester was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Majesty the Queen. He resides in western Massachusetts. His new book is Knowing What We Know: The Transmission of Knowledge: From Ancient Wisdom to Modern Magic.

This year is the 40th anniversary of Blackadder, the cult TV show that changed Tony's life. He famously played the ‘turnip brained' Baldrick, who always had ‘a cunning plan'. To celebrate this year's special birthday, Tony welcomes fellow Blackadder alumni, and dear friend of almost 60 years, onto the launch episode of Cunningcast - yes, it's the legend that is Miriam Margolyes. In this special episode, Tony and Miriam recount stories from the series and discuss: where they first met, how she built her hugely successful career, the joys of travelling late in life, her new book, and most importantly… does she have a cunning plan? Health warning: this being Miriam, the language does get a little fruity at times! Dr. John Arnold, geb. 1933 in London, ist Träger des „Most Excellent Order of the British Empire“ OBE. Er studierte Französisch, Deutsch, Russisch und Theologie, wirkte nach einer wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit als Dean of Rochester und Dean of Durham. By the 1940s, they had transplanted many of its members from Europe and the United States to Palestine. Acting often in conflict (but at times, also in coordination) with rival clandestine militias such as the Haganah and the Lehi (or Stern terrorist Group), the Irgun's efforts would feature prominently in the armed struggles against British and Arab forces alike in the 1930s and 1940s. Irgun was described as a terrorist organization by The New York Times, the Anglo-American Committee of Enquiry, prominent world figures such as Winston Churchill and Jewish figures such as Hannah Arendt, Albert Einstein, and many others.   The Betar Naval Academy was a Jewish naval training school established in Civitavecchia, Italy in 1934 by the Revisionist Zionist movement under the direction of Ze'ev Jabotinsky, with the agreement of Benito Mussolini. The day was enshrined into Israeli law on March 23, 2005, when the Knesset enacted the Jabotinsky Law “to instill for generations the vision, legacy and work of Ze'ev Jabotinsky, to mark his memory and to bring about the education of future generations and to shape the State of Israel, its institutions, its objectives and its character in accordance with its Zionist vision.” A state memorial service is held every year at the Ze'ev Jabotinsky Tomb on Mount Herzl. The Knesset also holds a special hearing to commemorate the day and IDF bases throughout the country also hold lectures and services to mark the occasion.

We're on the road this week with a festive episode of the podcast to celebrate Vidyamala: the extraordinary inspiration behind Breathworks who has just been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's Birthday 2022 Honours List. She has been honoured for her Services to Wellbeing and Pain Management as Co-founder of Breathworks, an organisation which teaches mindfulness-based approaches to people coping with pain, illness and stress. In a riot of birdsong, on a beautiful day in early summer, we were delighted to be able to join Vidyamala in her garden just after the news broke, along with her partner Sona, and her friend Aryajaya. As well as marking the occasion, we remember the very hard road travelled through pain that led to the foundation of Breathworks and its vital contribution to the welfare of so many people. Having passed on her wisdom to over 600 accredited trainers in 35 countries, Vidyamala's work isn't "just mindfulness"—it's now a whole transformative movement capable of reaching deep into society. In Vidyamala's approach the simple application of awareness and kindness becomes an emotionally intelligent and deeply responsive re-imagining of the Buddhist path itself, ready to meet the huge challenges of suffering in the 21st Century. Vidyamala has brought this beautiful work to bear in her own life with great courage, grace and equanimity, opening up portals to freedom in hearts and minds all around the world. She began to explore mindfulness and meditation as a way to manage her pain and found the results to be life changing and transformative. In this episode we talk about the highs, lows and breakthroughs in her journey, the role of mindfulness and meditation in meeting life's challenges, and how living with chronic pain shouldn't end with acceptance when flourishing is possible. About Vidyamala: Vidyamala Burch is a mindfulness and compassion teacher, author, disability spokesperson and Co-founder of the leading mindfulness organisation Breathworks. In 2001, she developed the world's first Mindfulness-based Pain Management (MBPM) programme and in 2004 went on to found the Breathworks organisation with Sona Fricker and Gary Hennessey.
