Chris and Alex delve into motion-capture, murder mystery, and monster houses for this discussion of Gil Kenan's 2006 computer-animated film Monster House, a digital feature produced by the ImageMovers company founded by renowned filmmaker Robert Zemeckis and a specialist in animation utilising mo-cap technologies. Joining them for Episode 121 of the podcast is Dr Jane Batkin, an animation film theorist and Associate Professor in the School of Film, Media and Journalism at the University of Lincoln. Her book Identity in Animation: A Journey into Self, Difference, Culture and the Body was published in 2017, and she has had various chapters in edited collections on animation, including a recent piece on childhood wandering in Coraline: A Closer Look at Studio Laika's Stop Motion Witchcraft (2021). Jane is currently working on a monograph on childhood in animated film and television and gained a British Academy Award for research in August 2022 for her project entitled “The Secret Space of Childhood in Animated and Live Action Cinema: Performance, Preservation and Metaphor.” Topics in this instalment include the production context for Monster House and the question of child labour; the uncanniness of children-in-performance and what it means for a child to be viewed as ‘acting' vs. ‘being'; the digital rendering of surfaces and textures and the film's ‘puppetlike' character designs; computer animation and nostalgia, and whether it is possible to be nostalgic for CGI; the ‘body' of animated homes and psycho-architectural spaces via the film's proximity to the horror genre; and how Monster House's negotiation of adulthood positions Kenan's computer-animated feature as a ‘Sirkian' melodrama for children. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Diane Ladd, Legendary Actress, Starring in “Isle of Hope” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Diane Ladd, is a legendary actress whose monumental body of work includes some of the most critically acclaimed and beloved movies and TV shows ever made. She's been nominated for 3 Academy Awards for her performances in “Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore”, “Wild at Heart” and “Rambling Rose”, in which she and her daughter, Laura Dern, made show business history as the first mother/daughter duo to earn Oscar nominations for the same film. She's won dozens of international awards including The British Academy Award, the Golden Globe Award, the Independent Spirit Film Award, the Susan B. Anthony Award, and the Palme d'or Award at the Cannes Film Festival. She's been nominated for 3 Emmy Awards for her performances in “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman”, “Grace Under Fire” and “Touched by an Angel”. In addition to her Oscar-nominated roles, some of her most iconic movie performances can be seen in “Chinatown”, “A Kiss Before Dying”, “Christmas Vacation”, “The Cemetery Club”, “Mrs. Munck, which she also wrote and directed, “Ghosts of Mississippi”, “Primary Colors”, “Joy”, and one of my all-time favourites, “The Last Full Measure”, directed by Todd Robinson who appeared on our show last year. And, in addition to the 3 TV shows I already mentioned, for which she earned Emmy nominations, she's delivered some of her most memorable television performances in dozens of shows including “Chesapeake Shores”, “Kingdom Hospital”, and “Enlightened”, once again co-starring the wonderful Laura Dern. She's written 2 bestselling books entitled, “Spiraling Through the School of Life: A Mental, Physical and Spiritual Discovery”, and “A Bad Afternoon for a Piece of Cake”, which won the 2014 Tennessee Williams Literary Award. And I'm very excited that she's here to talk about her newest film, entitled, “Isle of Hope”, an unforgettably poignant and moving film about a mother-daughter relationship that takes a dramatic twist when the mother has a life threatening stroke and wakes up thinking she's living 15 years in the past. Our guest's performance as Carmen Crawford, the mother in this film, is generating enormous Oscar buzz throughout the industry. And that's no surprise to anyone. After all, the renowned film critic Richard Corless of Time Magazine said it best, when he wrote that this woman is one of the top ten actresses not only in America, but the whole world. "From the outset of our episode with Ellen Burstyn you will hear her beloved puppy make their presence known and would continue to "chime in" a couple of times for the duration. In many respects this was more welcome than not, if only because it is in the very nature of the podcast form itself to be at least partially intimate and homey. In a podcast you get to experience a person discuss their accomplishments but they will do so often in settings that are more relaxed or casual than would be the case in a traditional t.v. talk show or radio spot. I like to think that is one of the beautiful features of the podcast as a form Ellen Burstyn might be one of the most famous guests we have ever had on our show. That fact alone, however, might not be nearly as remarkable as the further fact that in her case the fame is completely deserved. In her case fame and recognition form a one-to-one perfect match with merit. Burstyn, of course, is one of the greatest actors and, as I explain probably a little too profusely in the episode, I have had the greatest fortune to watch her performances over many decades, in some cases in live theatre. I can't or won't be able to do a summary of Ellen Burstyn in the space here except to say that, in keeping with the in depth nature of the podcast I had the opportunity to ask her about some of my personal favorite performances that have meant a lot to me over the years. Of course another host might have done a more comprehensive or less personal episode - one that focuses less on certain movies and plays or on some other facets of an extraordinary biography. I like to think that our ability to have taken the time to go into individual projects might be more rewarding than to hastily gloss over such projects. As I admitted at the outset of this interview, I was very nervous. But hopefully over the course of the hour you can listen to someone who is a master at the art of acting and hear her articulation of her ongoing life and career with all of the excitement and enjoyment I had in being so blessed and fortunate to have Ms. Burstyn as a guest." Ms. Burstyn's Biography Ellen Burstyn's sixty year acting career encompasses film, stage and television. In 1975, she became the third woman in history to win both a Tony Award and an Academy Award in the same year for her work in Same Time, Next Year on Broadway and in the film Alice Doesn't Live H as a guest.for which she also received a Golden Globe nomination and a British Academy Award for Best Actress. She became a “triple crown winner” when she received her first Emmy for a guest appearance on Law & Order: SVU (2009). She won her second Emmy for her role in Political Animals (2013). Additionally, she has received six Emmy nominations and five Academy Award nominations, including her nomination for Best Actress in The Exorcist (1973). Her most recent films include Pieces of a Woman (2021) and Queen Bees (2021). Her past work includes The Last Picture Show (1971), Resurrection (1981) and Requiem for a Dream (2000). She most recently starred in 33 Variations in Melbourne. Ellen is currently co-president of the Actors Studio alongside Al Pacino and Alec Baldwin. In 2006, she became a national best-selling author with the publication of her memoir, Lessons in Becoming Myself. “ I think the very first time I became aware of our guest Melanie Mayron it would have to have been in the August of 1978 when, at the age of eleven, I went on a hot and blissfully underpopulated New York City in August 1978 late afternoon to see this movie called GIRLFRIENDS. I dearly wish I remembered the exact theatre that was exhibiting it in that first run. (Was it The New Yorker? Bleeker Street Cinema?) But it was in Manhattan of August of 1978 which was the location and time of so much of that film's subject. I loved this picture as much as an eleven year old could and I loved this protagonist by the name of Susan Weinblatt . A few years later in the 1980s I would see her on stage in the play debut of Crossing Delancey, which was in fact written for her. As I mentioned on this episode Mayron was in two of my all time favorite moves: Girlfriends just mentioned, and the other was CAR WASH . Both are are on my 100 Greatest list in fact. She was one of the names on this dream list that our producer, Laurie Strickland urged me to start and maintain. Mayron is remarkable on a number of levels. One thing which I feel is taken too lightly by many is her flexibility with a the widest breadth of styles, not as easy as some might think. Not only does she excel in the broadest of comedies like Car Wash and the severest of dramas ( Playing For Time , Missing ) as well as stage and screens large and small, she is at the forefront of the current streaming revolution in home entertainment in shows like Grace And Frankie , Jane The Virgin , Glow and more. Thus her career has encompassed the many historical changes from practically five decades, from somebody in the thick of experience as a creator of those changes. She is also an accomplished director, producer as well as actor and, in what was news to me, the world of skin care and cosmetics, Mayron’s Goods and Supply: https://mayronsgoods.com I truly loved speaking with her on this episode as it was a chance to visit some of my favorite touchstones of film and t.v. in our time and from the point of view of someone who was one of its chief creators.” M E L A N I E M A Y R O N Melanie Mayron was nominated three times and won an Emmy Award for her role on the groundbreaking ABC drama “thirtysomething.” She was nominated for a British Academy Award for her starring role in the film, Girl Friends and won the Best Actress Award at the Locarno Switzerland Film Festival. Melanie has acted in feature films as well as television, among them Car Wash, Costa Gavras’ Academy Award winning Missing, and My Blue Heaven. She was last seen as Professor Donaldson in a recurring role in the CW’s Jane the Virgin. She performed on Broadway and Off. Melanie has forged an additional career as a director in movies and television and has directed episodes of the critically acclaimed HBO series, “Tell Me You Love Me “ as well as “In Treatment.” She was nominated for a Director’s Guild Award for Toothless, for ABC, starring Kirstie Alley. She has directed over a hundred episodes for television including this season’s Tommy on ABC starring Edie Falco, Lincoln Rhyme for NBC and for ABC The Baker and the Beautis. Her extended bio and links is on our podcast Facebook page. She is also the brand owner of Mayron’s Goods and Supply, a botanical line of skincare formulated by her chemist Dad. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mitch-hampton/message

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the actress and wildlife campaigner Virginia McKenna. She was born in London and, after spending five years of her childhood in South Africa to escape the Blitz, she returned to England. She enrolled at the Central School of Drama but left after two years when offered six months in Repertory at Dundee. Classics such as the Cruel Sea, Carve Her Name with Pride and A Town Like Alice, for which she won a British Academy Award for Best Actress, have been highlights in a long and successful career. However her most remembered and best loved roles have been in Born Free and Ring of Bright Water, starring opposite her actor husband the late Bill Travers. For Born Free, she won the Variety Club Best Actress Award . Making Born Free in 1964, which told the true story of George and Joy Adamson as they returned Elsa the lioness to the wild, profoundly affected Bill and Virginia and it was a key influence in their lives. They realised that wild animals belong in the wild and should be protected there, not imprisoned in captivity. But the premature death in London Zoo of Pole Pole, a young elephant, who had featured in their film, An Elephant Called Slowly, led to the founding of Zoo Check in 1984. The Trust was dedicated to preventing the abuse of captive wild animals and strove to protect and conserve them in the wild. Zoo Check grew to become a major force in the animal welfare movement and was renamed The Born Free Foundation in 1991. She was awarded the OBE in the New Year's Honours List in 2004 for services to wildlife and the arts.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: We Are The Music Makers by Edward Elgar Book: Animal - the Definitive Visual Guide to the World's Wildlife by David Burnie Luxury: Language tapes to learn Italian and Swahali
