This week… The fellas were prepped and ready to welcome Kim Davis, the host of the true crime podcast Slaycation. For reasons unknown Kim never joined the show. The date and time was confirmed but Kim was nowhere to be found. Hopefully her not showing up isn't the start of a true crime mystery, DUN DUN DUN! If it is, it was probably the husband or a scorned lover. Ah jeez I listened to a few too many true crime pods to prep for this episode and it got me nowhere! Thanks a lot Slaycation. Luckily Max had a true crime story ready to tell, and of “coors” it had to do with beer. Andy filled in for Kim and FaceTimed the whole show. They talked WI sports briefly, then battled the Urban Dictionary and found a few gems! They'll be out next week but they talked about creating the bar top challenge and what they'll be doing in their time off. The fellas were feeling pretty down but the beers kept their spirits high and they laughed and joked through another sode! But before any of the nonsense, they saved the best for first, with the Beer of the Week! During the BOW the fellas rate and review a new beer. They discuss the history of the brewery and examine what's in the beer they're drinking. Then, they break down the beer by its drinkability, the probability they'd drink it again, its chugability, and the can's attractability. The boys drink and review Brooklyn Brewery's Sunny Pale Ale, then discuss Star Wars and the enduring influence of the hero's journey. The Star Wars movies struck quite a chord with the public. On the one hand, it seems like silly kid's stuff. On the other hand, Pigweed's literature professors referred to Star Wars as a classic example of the hero pattern, or quest journey. The lives of Jesus, Moses, King Arthur, Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter, and many others follow a very similar pattern. Their stories follow a very predictable pattern that includes the call to adventure, resistance to the call, the role of the mentor, facing a challenge, winning the prize, then bringing that achievement back to the people. There are other background elements to the life of the hero, like a suspicious birth, the absense of parents, some connection to royalty and maybe divinity. Star Wars follows this myth in each individual episode, and across episodes. Some people have said that Star Wars has abandoned this pattern in the newest iteration of Star Wars -- the Acolyte. Others have gone so far as to suggest that The Acolyte has turned the entire myth on its head. Pigweed and Crowhill discuss the role of this pattern, and then, with some help from a letter from Nephew Will, evaluate some of the radical claims about The Acolyte.

Burial Beer Company's Doug Reiser discusses the culmination of a three-year project to open a rooftop wine bar for the company's Visuals wine brand in Asheville, North Carolina.    For Burial, it's about creating “immersive experiences” at its venues, Reiser explains. He discusses reviving once-abandoned spaces, how the company got into beer and then moved into the wine space and how much overlap there is between the company's beer drinkers and wine consumers.   But first, Jess, Zoe and Justin also discuss the key pieces Anchor Brewing is going to need in its resurrection. They also discuss the effectiveness of Brooklyn Brewery's European ad campaign, and pour over Voodoo Ranger's scans trends, with some brands in decline and others still on the ascent.

Beer and Conversation with Pigweed and Crowhill

The boys drink and review Brooklyn Brewery's Winter IPA, then discuss the rich men (north of Richmond) who want to tell us how to live and control every aspect of our lives. Seamus Bruner recently wrote a book called Controligarchs about how the super-rich want to tell all the rest of us how to live. Bruner singles out five on his book cover: Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Klaus Schwab, and George Soros. Noticeably absent is Elon Musk, who seems to be supporting personal freedom rather than top-down dominance. (Which is why the media hates him.) The controligarchs think they have the right and responsibility to tell us what to eat, what to drive, what to think, what to say, how to educate our children, how to spend our money .... "You'll eat bugs and you'll like it." Unfortunately, the population doesn't have the courage or integrity to tell them where to stuff it. As long as we have our cable TV and cheap food that can be delivered in less than 30 minutes, we're good. These controligarchs aren't taking their lead from traditional, consitutional American ideals. They're following Xi Jingping. It's time to resist these people.

Amid a spate of high-profile investments and acquisitions, the hosts assessed Brooklyn Brewery's alignment with Hoplark and what it means for the emerging segment of hop-centric beverages and also discussed the timing of Smuckers' $5.6 billion purchase of Hostess Brands. This episode also features an expansive interview with Adam Crocini, the SVP and global head for food and beverage brands at Hilton. Show notes: 0:34: Get Some Expo-sure. Rudi's Convenience. Bullish Or BS? Banza & Bevs. – As the team gears up for Expo East 2023, they sampled a handful of new products that will be featured at the annual event, and discussed growing consumer demand for hop-flavored alcohol-alternative beverages and a widening pool of brands and investors in the space. They also spoke about Banza's foray into frozen waffles and what makes for a successful brand extension, before sipping on several new products, including tea-based energy drinks, “superfruit” sodas and RTD non-alcoholic cocktails. 36:29: Adam Crocini, SVP & Global Head, Food and Beverage Brands, Hilton – Since 2018, Crocini has been at the forefront of enhancing the Hilton's food and beverage offerings across its 7,000 properties spanning 122 countries and territories. His strategy guides everything from partnerships with Michelin-starred chefs to grab-and-go pantries.
