Thanks to Lydia and "warblrwatchr" for this week's suggestions! Further reading: Sweet tooth: Ethiopian wolves seen feeding on nectar The African wild dog is not actually a dog and eats lots of things: The aardwolf is not a dog at all and eats insects: The Ethiopian wolf is not a dog (or a wolf or a fox) and eats rodents and nectar [photo by Adrien Lesaffre and taken from this page]: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to talk about three dog-like animals from Africa, suggested by Lydia and “warblrwatchr,” even though none of the three animals are dogs. We'll start with one of Lydia's suggestions, the African wild dog, also called the painted dog or painted wolf. Despite those names, it's not very closely related to dogs and wolves. It's the only species in its own genus, although it is a member of the family Canidae. Colonizers from Europe thought the animal was just a feral dog, not anything special that should be protected, and they also brought domestic dogs with them to Africa. Domestic dogs mean diseases that other canids can catch. Between introduced diseases, farmers killing the animals to keep them away from livestock, and habitat loss, the African wild dog is endangered. Luckily, these days conservation groups have been working to protect the animal, and its numbers are increasing slowly in Kenya's national parks in particular. The African wild dog is a tall, strong canid with great big ears and no dewclaws. It has a yellowish coat with black blotches and some white spots, including a white tail tip, although some subspecies have darker coats. Unlike most canids, its fur is bristly and doesn't have a soft undercoat, and as the dog ages, it loses its fur until old dogs are nearly bald. It's very social, as canids almost always are, and its varied coat pattern helps individuals recognize friends and pack-mates at a distance. The African wild dog prefers savannas and other open areas. It hunts in packs and mostly preys on antelopes, although it will also kill zebras and other large animals, and individual dogs will sometimes catch small animals like hares and rodents. The African wild dog pack isn't especially hierarchical. The males of the pack are mainly led by the dominant male, while the females are mainly led by the oldest female, who is usually the most dominant. The dominant pair is usually the only pair that has babies. A mother dog has up to 16 pups at a time but only one litter a year. In a lot of animals, as the babies grow up, the males are usually the ones who are driven out of the pack or leave on their own to find a new pack. In the African wild dog, females are the ones who leave as they grow up. Sometimes the females join a different pack and sometimes they start their own. Either way, it stops a pack from becoming inbred. The African wild dog is extremely vocal, making lots of different sounds to communicate with its pack-mates. It sounds a lot more like a bird than a dog. This is what African wild dogs sound like: [doggo sounds] Next, Lydia and warblrwatchr wanted to learn about the aardwolf, which lives in eastern and southern Africa. Unlike the African wild dog, which is mostly active during the day, the aardwolf is nocturnal. It spends most of the day in a burrow, sometimes one it digs itself, but more often one that another animal dug and abandoned at some point. The aardwolf has black stripes on a yellowish or reddish coat, a mane of long hair down its neck and back, large ears, and a bushy tail. It's about the size of a big dog, about 20 inches tall at the shoulders, or 50 cm, but it looks like a small, slender hyena. That's because it is actually a type of hyena, although it's not closely related to other hyenas. Hyenas look dog-like but they aren't canids at all. In fact, they're more closely related to cats than to dogs,
Ahwooooooooo there Herders, and welcome back the wolves episode! We have been holding off on all the good episodes for when the deployment ended!Wolf, any of two species of wild doglike carnivores. The gray, or timber, wolf (Canis lupus) is the better known. It is the largest nondomestic member of the dog family (Canidae) and inhabits vast areas of the Northern Hemisphere. The Ethiopian, or Abyssinian, wolf (C. simensis) inhabits the highlands of Ethiopia; until recently it was considered a jackal. Pervasive in mythology, folklore, and language, the gray wolf has had an impact on the human imagination and has been the victim of levels of misunderstanding that few animals have shared. With the exception of humans and the lion, the gray wolf

Thanks to Dean for this week's suggestion, the crab-eating fox! Further reading: Jaguars could prevent a not-so-great American biotic exchange The crab-eating fox is not actually a fox: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. I'm happy to report that I'm feeling healthy and testing negative for covid now. Even my lingering cough has pretty much cleared up! I hope you're healthy too. Anyway, this week let's learn about an unusual animal suggested by Dean, the crab-eating fox. The crab-eating fox lives in parts of South America east of the Andes Mountains. It likes forests and open woodlands, and sometimes lives in savannas too although it prefers areas with a lot of tree cover and rivers. It's a fairly small animal that rarely weighs more than 18 pounds, or 8 kg, and stands about 16 inches tall at the shoulder, or 40 cm. It has a thick coat that's mostly gray or brown with reddish ears and paws, black markings on the ears, tail, and legs, and a black stripe down its spine. It also has a bushy tail and a relatively short muzzle. There are two important questions we need to answer about the crab-eating fox. First, does it actually eat crabs? Second, is it actually a fox? The crab-eating fox does indeed eat crabs, although it's an omnivore and will eat pretty much anything it can find. This includes insects, eggs, fruit, carrion, and small animals of various kinds, especially rodents. But during the wet season, when it rains a whole lot and rivers flood and ebb repeatedly, the crab-eating fox eats a whole lot of crabs and other crustaceans. The crab-eating fox is not, in fact, a fox. It's definitely related to foxes, since it's a canid and the family Canidae includes foxes as well as wolves, dogs, coyotes, and all their relations, and it looks like a fox. It's the only member of its own genus, but it's grouped together with some other South American canids that look like foxes but are more closely related to wolves. But they're not all that closely related to either foxes or wolves. Another member of this group is the maned wolf, the one with super long legs, which we talked about most recently in episode 167. Scientists think that the crab-eating fox's closest relation is another South American canid called the short-eared dog, which we talked about in episode 195. Unlike the crab-eating fox, the short-eared dog likes heavy forests and lives in the Amazon rainforest. We know so little about it that researchers sometimes refer to it as the ghost dog. The crab-eating fox is nocturnal and spends most of the daytime sleeping in a den. Sometimes it makes a den by burrowing into thick grass, sometimes it will dig a burrow, but it prefers to find a den made by another animal and move into it if it's empty. It may have several dens in its territory, which it often shares with its mate. Both parents help take care of the babies, and a female may have two litters a year. I'm happy to report that the crab-eating fox is not endangered. It's doing just fine in most places. It's an adaptable, intelligent animal, which helps it thrive in a changing environment the same way coyotes do in North America. In fact, it fills the same ecological niche in South America that the coyote fills in North America, and this has led to a really weird potential problem. The crab-eating fox is native to South America, but it has been spreading northward into Central America. Likewise, the coyote is native to North America, but it has been spreading southward into Central America. Neither species likes thick forested areas, but as more rainforests are cleared for agriculture and housing, people have inadvertently made a sort of corridor for both species. Having people around doesn't bother either the crab-eating fox or the coyote. Coyotes have made it as far south as Panama, almost to South America. If this continues, with crab-eating foxes migrating north and coyotes migrating south in ever gre...

Thanks for joining us, today we welcome Clint Brauer, CEO and Founder of Greenfield Robotics. Clint has a great story. He grew up farming in south-central Kansas and went to K State where he got into technology. After graduating from college and spending a decade plus in media and technology, in Los Angeles, San Fransisco, and New York, Clint decided to return to his roots in Kansas, launching MG Honor Farms on the family farmstead. Clint began adopting regenerative ag principles but was frustrated with the limitations of current tools and technology for regenerative farming and the dream of organic no-till, so he decided to launch a company where he could use his technology experience to solve the scaling issues of regenerative broadacre systems. Clint and his team are doing some exciting work and he and Monte explore that today. Clint grew up in Kansas and learned as a child how to train dairy cattle, grow vegetables and farm broadacre crops. After college, he began his career with W3-Design, an early web design agency in Los Angeles, where he managed their top clients. Clint then worked for Universal Music where he helped with the data asset management project for digital distribution of music. In 2003, Clint joined Sony and his role quickly expanded to VP of Marketing, CRM and Operations of Sony Connect, an early cutting-edge video service which blazed a path for mainstream services like Netflix and Hulu. Clint's team created one of the first true 360 degree views of customers across ecommerce, email, offline and online campaigns and the call centers. This involved integration of early stage SaaS companies Omniture, RightNow, PostFuture, Pivotlink and an internal ecommerce system. Clint also drove the division toward SEO as a customer acquisition strategy over traditional media deals. His team then successfully launched the Sony eReader and software across North America, both online and at retail, and also worked with book publishers to substantially decrease the cost of ebook conversion. After a decade-plus in media and technology, Clint returned to his roots in Kansas, launching MG Honor Farms on the family farmstead. Clint has grown and marketed over 100+ crops without chemicals outdoors, in traditional greenhouses as well as hydroponic greenhouses. Clint has also advised over 10 farms with their marketing, helping them secure distribution into 35+ grocery stores such as all Kansas City-area Whole Foods and Hy-Vee's as well as 25+ restaurants and 4 school systems. In 2015 Clint started Canidae Farms, a regenerative farm network for Canidae Pet Foods (canidae.com/farms), which he continues to operate. In this role he is working with farms to adopt regenerative agriculture practices in return for higher margins. Canidae was acquired by L Catterton in 2018 and the program is now expanding again in 2020 with partner farms in Kansas and Nebraska. Frustrated with the limitations of current tools and technology for regenerative farming, Clint decided to launch a company to solve the scaling issues of regenerative broadacre systems. He recruited Carl Sutter and Steven Gentner, two talented engineers he met decades ago at W3-design, to co-found Greenfield Robotics. The company has been working for several years on its small, autonomous robots for weed control, and is currently in customer pilots. https://www.greenfieldrobotics.com/ https://www.facebook.com/greenfieldrobotics/ https://twitter.com/GreenfieldBots https://www.instagram.com/greenfieldrobotics/ linkedin.com/company/greenfield-robotics/ Got questions you want answered? Karen Casey, Head of People & Culture at Canidae Pet, joined Host Jeff Cross this week to discuss an important topic that all human resource professionals run into at some point in their career: managing poor performers. The two get into a great discussion around coaching vs. managing, how much time performance improvement plans should be given, how the employee's role in the workplace culture may be just as important as their performance, advice for when you have to let someone go, how to deal with the fall-out amongst other employees, and more. There's a lot packed into this 36-minute episode and for good reason. If you are in HR, or have a part in the people side of your organization, give this a listen! Music By: Colin Cross Music
Is the pandemic changing how you lead your organization? That's the question we asked C-Suite executives at five different companies in this mini episode of the Being Human is Good for Business podcast. Over the past several months we've interviewed dozens of executive leaders from a broad range of businesses and social impact organizations. Yet, we seldom had a discussion that didn't touch upon how the pandemic has changed how we lead and work. For Bret Furio, CEO of Canidae, the pet food company, learning to see the positive in constantly changing circumstances helped him as a leader. He says, “I'm learning to be more generous in terms of work life balance and being flexible about work arrangements. It lets people do what works best for them, and allows them to still contribute greatly.” Carnegie Mellon University CFO Angela Blanton told us how the pandemic had taught her the importance of building trusting relationships, of taking more time to make decisions, and to be a lot more flexible. She says, “I am learning to back up and let my leaders lead. I'm trying to not make any decisions too quickly so that we can be flexible when we need to shift direction.” The former president of International Brake Industries (IBI), Paul Johnson, told us how his team has been able to innovate under difficult circumstances. He says that learning to work through the pandemic has raised their level of innovation. EA's Vice President of Worldwide Customer Experience Joel Knutson told us his organization has been able to pivot, thanks to increased investment in the health and wellbeing of the team. He explains, “We're flexing up our empathy, significantly. We're flexing to focus on employee needs and are rolling out additional benefits to all our employees.” When we spoke to Misan Rewane, the former CEO of the Nigerian social enterprise Wave Academies, she told us how the pandemic is teaching her to hold space for her people while they are work as virtual team. She says, “It's the simple things like starting a call by genuinely listening as people tell you how they really are.” Watch for future mini episodes where we'll bring you highlights from all our past shows. CMO's tend to have a mantra when they take over a new job: reorg, rebrand, and restructure. But while the mantra is simple, the process is not. Any time things change, feathers get ruffled, even for the most well-intentioned CMOs.“Being performance driven, it's not always the most popular thing to do when you come into a new company. I pulled back spend in Q2 quite significantly from where we were spending, because I didn't feel it was working. And there were a lot of conversations with my peers, as well as with our CEO, and even the board on some of the risks of doing that. But I really believe that by pulling back a little bit and slowing down in order to get those insights and those key learnings in place, we'll be able to speed up in the future and kind of double down on what's working.”That's Dana Paris, who is the first CMO of Canidae Pet Food, and she is quick to note that changes and hard conversations are not done in a vacuum. They are calculated risks designed to drive the overall health of the organization. On this episode of Marketing Trends, Dana dives into how having those tough conversations with your C-Level peers can set the foundation for a successful partnership. Plus, she also touches on why alignment across all your touch points, online and in-person, is imperative when you're building your brand awareness.Main TakeawaysWell, this is Awkward: As a CMO, you have tough conversations. After all, there are KPIs to meet and products to sell. But as a CMO, it's imperative to remember that you were brought in to do a job, which means setting the company up for future success. Don't be afraid to mix things up that you see holding the company back.A True Symbiotic Relationship: Today brands are not only fighting for awareness for the inventory on shelves, but they are also fighting for recognition online and across all digital touchpoints. Companies must have strong alignment when it comes to their ecommerce sites and their brick and mortar locations so consumers can easily connect the in-store and online experiences. A strong alignment on these things will also help lead the consumer further down the funnel in their purchasing decision. Building Brand Loyalty: When you're a new brand trying to break into a populated space, you have to find organic avenues to naturally introduce your product to consumers. For Canidae, this process included working with breeders to introduce dogs to its food when they are puppies, and then having the breeders recommend the food to the consumer. This process helps to build consistent buying behaviors, while also helping grow the brand. ---Marketing Trends podcast is brought to you by Salesforce. Apparently it's a birthday party thing to do in Japan: The sucker part of the lumpsucker: SO ANGY: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. This week we’re going to learn about two interesting fish, but first a CORRECTION! In the hyena episode last week I called the hyena a canid, and it’s not! Yikes, that was a major blunder on my part. Thanks to Bal for the correction. Hyenas aren’t even very closely related to canids at all. They’re in the family Hyaenidae while canids are in the family Canidae, although both are in the order Carnivora along with cats and walruses and raccoons and weasels, etc. AND thanks to Simon who also let me know that the striped hyena lives in the Middle East and Asia as well as Africa. Sorry, y’all. I hate when I make mistakes. Anyway, back to the fish! We’ll start with the handfish, which happens to be a suggestion by Simon. Simon sent me an article about the smooth handfish specifically, and it’s a sad article because the smooth handfish has been declared extinct. The smooth handfish used to be a common fish that lived off the coast of Tasmania in warm, shallow water. It was reddish-brown with darker brown markings, and it grew to about 1 3/4 inches long, or 4.4 cm. But the area where it lived was dredged so intensively for oysters and scallops up until 1967 that the fish’s habitat was destroyed. It was described in 1802 from a single specimen caught by a French naturalist, but that’s the only smooth handfish anyone ever bothered to collect for science. And now it’s the only specimen we have to study. The reason the smooth handfish was so vulnerable to habitat loss is that it didn’t have a larval stage where newly hatched fish could disperse to new areas by floating on currents. Handfish eggs hatch into teeny baby handfish, not larval handfish. As a result, it was restricted to only specific areas and when those areas were destroyed by dredging, the fish was driven extinct. And the really awful thing is, the only reason people stopped dredging for oysters and scallops is because they’d been so overfished that there basically weren’t any left. The smooth handfish is actually the first marine fish known that has gone extinct in modern times. There are 13 other species of handfish known in the world, but they’re all endangered due to pollution, habitat loss, and the spread of invasive species. Like the smooth handfish, other handfish species lay eggs that hatch into juvenile fish instead of larval fish, so they’re also especially vulnerable to habitat loss. For example, there are fewer than 100 red handfish alive in two small areas off the coast of Tasmania. We know because each fish has unique markings, which allows conservationists to identify individuals. A group called the Handfish Conservation Project has put together a database of living individuals, and if you donate at least $1,000 (in Australian dollars) you get to give one of the fish a name. I’ll put a link in the show notes so you can go look at the fish and see the names some of them have been given. The names include Ginger Ninja, Knuckles, Rosie Palm, and The Stalker. The handfish is called that because its pectoral fins look like big flat hands that it uses t...

But hiding behind its friendly people, lush greenery and nearly 2 million lakes, are stories of very strange monsters and cryptids. These are the Top 5 Monsters and Cryptids of Canada. 5. Waheela Known as one of the most versatile predators on theplanet, the canids (belonging to the family of Canidae) are truly impressive. This family includes domestic dogs, jackals, dingoes, wolves, foxes and more. They’re not just impressive with their hunting skills but that they have also spread out all across the globe, living on every single continent. 4. Wendigo Popular in some Native American legends, the Wendigo is a cryptid most famous among the Algongquian peoples. They’ve been reported in much of North America and all along the Atlantic Coast and Great Lakes area. Roughly translated as “the evil spirit that devours mankind” or “cannibal,” the Wendigo is said to have such an insatiable hunger for human flesh that even if it feeds, it continues to grow hungry for more. 3. Ogopogo With more than 2 million lakes sprawled the country, it’s no surprise Canada has its fair share of lake serpents and monsters. And One of the most well known of these is the Ogopogo. Considered as America’s Loch Ness, the Ogopogo resides in Lake Okanagan in British Columbia. Reports of the monster predate Nessie in the media by about seven years. 2. Adlet At first glance, you might think the Adlet is the precursor or even the same as a Werewolf. Originally hailing from North American Inuit legends, the Adlet looks like the classic Werewolf except that these creatures are not shapeshifters. Legend states the Adlet was born from a woman named Niviarsiang, who gave birth to these half dog creatures. 1. Manipogo Canada is no stranger to lake monsters. We’ve encountered the Ogopogo earlier but did you know there’s another lake monster said to be hiding in Lake Manitoba? It’s called the Manipogo. Named in 1957, it’s described as being anywhere from 12 feet to 50 feet long. It has a muddy brown body with large humps, usually the ones showing above the water, and a sheep-like head.
This week we’re looking at some strange and mysterious canids from around the world! The African wild dog: A dhole: An old photo of the ringdocus and a newer photo of the ringdocus: A coyote: Sri Lankan golden jackal: The maned wolf MONEY SHOT: A bush dog: A stuffed Honshu wolf, dramatically lit: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. This week let’s look at a bunch of mystery doggos from around the world! I really like dogs, but for some reason dogs and their relations don’t come up much on the podcast. When I started looking into mystery canids, though, I found so much information that there’s no way I can stuff even half of it into one episode. So we’ll definitely be revisiting mystery dogs in the future. The family Canidae includes dogs, wolves, coyotes, jackals, and foxes. Yes, foxes are canids, but not closely related to more dog-like canids. We’re going to skip the foxes this week, since foxes deserve an episode all their own eventually. Dogs were domesticated at least 9,500 years ago, possibly as long as 14,700 years ago, maybe even as long as 36,000 years ago. Dogs and humans go way back. The closest living relative of the dog is the gray wolf, which is still alive today, but the wild ancestor of the domestic dog was a different species of wolf that has gone extinct. There are canids called wild dogs, but they’re not the same species as domestic dogs. The African wild dog, for instance, is not very closely related to dogs and wolves—in fact, it’s the only species in its own genus. It’s a tall, lean canid with large ears and no dewclaws. It has a yellowish coat with black blotches and some white spots, including a white tail tip, although some subspecies have darker coats. As the dog ages, it loses its fur until old dogs are nearly bald. It hunts in packs and mostly preys on antelopes, warthogs, ostriches, hares, and rodents. The nomadic Tuareg people who live in northern parts of Africa around the Sahara have stories of a supernatural creature called the Adjule, among other names. The Adjule’s description makes it sound a lot like the African wild dog, including its lack of a dew claw. Since the African wild dog is rare in that part of Africa, it’s possible that rare sightings of what is a distinctively odd-looking animal may have given rise to the stories. Another so-called wild dog is the dhole, also called the Indian wild dog, which is closely related to the African wild dog. It used to be common throughout Eurasia and North America, but these days it’s restricted to parts of Asia and is endangered. It looks something like a fox and something like a wolf, but is neither. Like many other canids in this episode, the dhole has its own genus. Because it tends to be easily tamed and is sometimes kept as a pet, researchers once believed domestic dogs might have descended from the dhole or an ancestral species of dhole, but genetic evidence shows that the dhole isn’t closely related to domestic dogs or to wolves. There are three subspecies of dhole, two of them reddish-brown in color and one with fur that’s pale brown in winter. But there is a mystery animal called the gray dhole that may turn out to be a fourth subspecies or something else. The gray dhole supposedly lives in the forests and mountains of Myanmar. It’s dark gray with a black muzzle and small, round ears, and is supposed to be smaller than the other dhole species. In 1913 a Major E.G. Phythian-Adams wrote about the grey dhole after he saw one that year, and in 1933 E.H. Peacock mentioned it in his book A Game Book for Bhurma and Adjoining Territories. In 1936 an explorer named Tsaing reported seeing one in Burma. But after these reports, the Bombay Natural History Society tried to find physical evidence of the animal in the 1950s, but couldn’t track down anything. They only found one person who even reported seeing the grey dhole...

One of the most common questions I get is, “How do I find my passions?” Author Kristin Hannah says, “Finding your passion isn't just about careers and money. It's about finding your authentic self. The one you've buried beneath other people's needs.” I couldn’t agree more. It is easy for moms to lose themselves in motherhood. It is very common to wake up one day, years into motherhood, and wonder: What am I passionate about? What are my hobbies? What would I do with myself if I had free time? What makes me happy outside of my family? How would I fill my time if I didn’t have kids to take care of? What is my favorite food? Do I even have a favorite color? The path to finding your passions and bringing TONS more joy and magic into your life is pretty simple, but not necessarily easy. It takes some time, but it’s well worth it – and the discovery can be really fun. Listen in to this episode as I share 7 steps to find your passions in life (beyond motherhood and family life.) Body image has been a hot topic for me my whole life because it has been a struggle for me my whole life. Working in the fitness industry for 16 years made me hyper-aware of how every woman battles her own body at some point in her life – sometimes for her entire life. Having worked with thousands of women, I can tell you that a woman who weighs 125 pounds often has then same insecurities as a woman who weighs 225 pounds. Our insecurities are universal because they are programmed into us from a ridiculously young age. Today I’m going to talk you through 5 ways to start deprogramming the lies you tell yourself about your body so you can start healing the relationship you have with the body that has served you well your whole life. I’m going to give you a lot of information and a lot of resources, so take notes! Rachel Paz is a Shameless Mom to her 9-year-old sonm as well as a relationship-readiness coach for independent women who feel like finding companionship and intimacy is impossible without settling. Rachel didn’t magically know exactly what she wanted in a relationship and how to get it - but a divorce and entering the dating world again were a wake-up call to address the fear of intimacy she had experienced her whole life. To get at the root of the issue, she broke down everything she did in relationships to figure out the reason why behind it. Along the way, Rachel realized that everything she did in relationships that had her feeling like she was settling, were actually behaviors that inherently avoided intimacy. Through identifying the patterns of these self-sabotaging behaviors and practicing alternative ways of doing things, she developed a sense of loyalty to herself that had never been there before, leading her to have deeper and more fulfilling relationships than she ever thought possible. Now Rachel leads women on this journey of examining who they are and who they want to be in their relationships, clearing out what’s in the way, and attracting partners that fit. She loves to see women unravel the intricacies of what they want, break patterns, and learn the skills to feel ready to love again without sacrificing themselves in the process. Rachel gets extremely open, honest, and vulnerable in sharing her story and her path to a much better life through the demise of her marriage and finding herself through Orgasmic Meditation. Rachel’s dad was a priest before having a family. Rachel had always lead repressed, albeit comfortable and controlled, life. But she was not happy or fulfilled. She shares her defining moments here. If this conversation makes you uncomfortable, that miiiight mean you need to stick around and hear the message. This is a powerful conversation that might really hit home in ways you did not think possible. Please note: while Rachel shares in the episode how Orgasmic Meditation (OM) changed her life, her sharing that experience is not intended to be an endorsement of the organization that teaches OM courses. Her coaching practice is based on principles she learned through practicing OM, and doesn't include OM itself, unless specifically requested. Listen in to hear Rachel share: Why (and how) she started practicing Orgasmic Meditation How Orgasmic Meditation helped her reprioritize her whole life and discover her true preferences and passions for the first time The common traits and struggles of an independent (often proudly Shameless woman) and how to rectify these Why identifying as an “independent woman” might actually be harming you more than helping you The 8 steps to take responsibility for the relationships in your life One step you can take today to start getting more of what you truly want in your life Links Mentioned: Connect with Rachel: Rachel Paz Rachel on Facebook Thank you to our sponsors: Wing Alpha: Get $25 off your first cell phone bill when you go to Wing Alpha , click Join Wing and enter the code SHAMELESS. Deborah Reber is a New York Times bestselling author, coach, and the founder of TiLT Parenting, a podcast and online community for parents raising differently wired children. Debbie’s podcast has more than 300,000 downloads and on it, she interviews high-profile thought leaders in parenting and education. Debbie’s new book is Differently Wired: Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World. Prior to launching TiLT, Debbie spent fifteen years writing inspiring books for teen girls. As a teen girl authority, she frequently spoke about self-esteem and confidence. In 2013, Debbie and her family moved from Seattle to Amsterdam, where she currently writes and homeschools her 13-year-old differently wired son, Asher. I will share that I rarely read a book cover to cover before interviewing my guests. But I found Differently Wired to be such an essential read, I read every single page. Whether your child is differently wired or not, you will find such comfort and wisdom in Debbie’s stories and expertise. If you are parenting a differently wired child, Debbie’s work will be an invaluable resource. If you are in a community with differently wired kids (and I promise you are, whether you know it or not), you will learn how they see the world and how you might best be able to support their families. If you are parenting a neurotypical child, you will still find a ton of parenting support throughout the book. I dog-eared page after page. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Listen in to hear Debbie share: How many kids fall under the umbrella of differently wired and why being differently wired provides many gifts and opportunities How to parent from possibility instead of fear How to introduce your child based on their strengths, not their struggles How to manage the parenting comparison trap (and all those families with picture perfect vacation photos on social media) How to use your loud and unapologetic voice when it comes to being an advocate for your child Links Mentioned: TiLT ParentingWebsite: http://www.tiltparenting.com Connect with Debbie Reber: http://www.debbiereber.com Podcast: TiLT Parenting Debbie on Facebook Debbie on Twitter Debbie on Instagram Thank you to our sponsors: Bioclarity: Get 50% off your skincare routine + free shipping. One of the simplest ways you can transform your life is by creating a morning routine that frames and fuels your day. I have talked about this ever since starting this podcast and now I’ve created a super simple 15 minute morning routine for you, the 15 Minute Manifest. The 15 Minute Manifest is inspired by my morning routine and the morning routines of many of my mentors. This routine will give you clarity, vision, power, and a sense of freedom as you enter each new day. I think you’ll find it extremely liberating and life-giving. For those of you who think you don’t have 15 minutes to spare in the morning, two things: You probably do –you just need to make time (set an alarm a little earlier, stop hitting snooze, organize yourself the night before, let your family know that you are implementing a new habit and they need to take some responsibility for morning time habits as well) If you truly can’t spare 15 minutes, this routine can be done in as little as 6 minutes and still be extremely impactful. So, now that you have NO EXCUSES for not taking ownership of your day, tune in to this episode and download your free copy of my 15 Minute Manifest to get started on your own #15minutemanifest first thing tomorrow morning. THEN – tell me how it went! We’ll be talking about the 15 Minute Manifest all week in our private Facebook group, Shameless Mom #everydamnday. Mr. Money Mustache shares how and why to embrace the nagging voices in your head. Episode 886: Embracing the Nagging Voices of Success by Mr. Money Mustache (How Do I Become More Successful & Happy in Life). Mr. Money Mustache is a thirty-something retiree who now writes about how we can all live a frugal, yet awesome, life of leisure. He and his wife studied engineering and computer science in Canada, then worked in standard tech-industry cubicle jobs in various locations throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s. Then they retired from real work way back in 2005 in order to start a family. This was achieved not through luck or amazing skill, but simply by living a lifestyle about 50% less expensive than most of their peers and investing the surplus in very boring conservative Vanguard index funds and a rental house or two. Courtney Carver shares her story and how you can simplify to reach your best health. Episode 476: Simplify for Your Best Health by Courtney Carver of Be More With Less (Simple & Slow Living for a Healthy Lifestyle). Courtney Carver was stopped in her tracks with a scary MS diagnosis after decades of debt, discontent, and trying to do it all. She had to slow down, prioritize her health, and figure out what was really important in her life. She discovered what mattered most by getting rid of everything that didn't matter at all. In the end it all came down to love and health. She went from a busy, overwhelmed advertising director to spending 2-3 hours every morning taking care of herself, loving her work, and being present and engaged with the people she loves. Her family changed, too. They moved from wanting bigger closets, nicer furniture, and more stuff to downsizing into a 750 sq. ft apartment with no storage. Courtney has written books, courses, and hundreds of articles to help you simplify your life and work so you can focus on what really matters. Kym Campbell is the creator of the free 30 Day PCOS Diet Challenge and The Beat PCOS 10 Week Program where she seeks to help women overcome their PCOS diagnosis by applying evidence-based approaches to food, exercise, and emotional wellness practices. After having struggled with health issues since her early teens, it wasn’t until her 30’s when she began struggling with infertility that Kym was diagnosed with PCOS. After a long journey of completely transforming her health through diet and lifestyle changes, Kym fell pregnant naturally after years of failed IVF treatments. When not busy supporting women with PCOS, Kym’s other passions include writing and recording music, surfing, and spending quality time with her husband and her 10-month-old son. PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. It is much more common than you might think and many women go undiagnosed despite their symptoms of irregular periods, unexplained weight gain, hormonal imbalances and more. One of the great things about a PCOS diagnosis is that it is often very treatable through lifestyle changes, rather than long-term medications (that come with lots of side effects). Kym talks in depth about symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. It is very likely that someone close to you struggles with PCOS – perhaps undiagnosed. For those who go undiagnosed, there is often a tremendous amount of shame around their symptoms and their bodies that seem like they are failing them at times. If you think this episode might be helpful to a friend or family member, please share it with them. We're all familiar with canines (dogs, wolves, jackals, foxs, etc), but these are just only one of three sub-families of the larger canid family to survive to the present day. There were also the Hesperocyoninae and Borophaginae, but what did these other canids look like and why did they go extinct? The canid family also falls within the larger suborder Caniformia which includes skunks, bears and seals, but how are all these related? We've therefore quite a lot of history of the group to cover before we eventually see Canis lupus familiaris become man's best friend. To talk us through their evolution is Dr Xiaoming Wang of the Natural History Museum, Los Angeles.
