Health is not one size fits all, as much as the world of conventional medicine would like us to believe! And even more confusing is the fact that health studies are changing now by the day, so what can we believe is real? What is the BEST for our bodies, and our overall quality of health + life? In this episode, I speak with Jordan Trinagel about the future of functional medicine, and how this differs from conventional medicine by revolutionizing + personalizing the experience by giving you clarity for what YOU need. By asking the right questions + continuing to ask the right questions (Hello, Curious George!), functional medicine helps you get to the ROOT cause of your symptoms and not diagnose via the “pop a pill” quick fix system that keeps us sick + suffering as a collective in a broken healthcare system. About Jordan: Jordan Trinagel grew up in Rockland County NY and received her Bachelor's/ Masters of Science degree from Towson University. She has been a healthcare practitioner working in rehabs and hospitals since 2015. She is a registered/licensed Occupational Therapist and Certified Brain Injury Specialist in the state of NY. Her professional career in healthcare and personal health journey led her to continuing research and self-education.  She struggled with acne, IBS, anxiety/ depression, psoriasis, fatigue, ADHD; and after seeing many specialists, trialing medications and going through various therapy she learned about alternative, functional healthcare methods for herself and her patients. She is now the founder of Health Reconditioned; an online health coaching and consulting business where her focus is on educating people about functional medicine and using simple at home lab tests to get the root cause of your symptoms to finally optimize your health! Beginning her career as a Special Education teacher which led her use of creative arts to teach special needs and disenfranchised children, Colleen graduated from NYU's Drama Therapy program and has been in clinical practice for over 30 years. Beginning her clinical work in addiction and family prevention, Colleen had the opportunity to create Psychodrama and Trauma programming at two psychiatric hospitals . She has served as the psychodrama trainer for the Caron Foundation's Family Education Program and would later integrate this work into her Renfrew experience running multiple family groups of up to about 100 people. Colleen is published on the topics of trauma and eating disorders and had been guest lecturing at many local universities, organizations and treatment centers. In August 2015 while walking out of PT for a concussion, Colleen was struck by a car and suffered another more severe TBI. It was then that she began co-leading a TBI group with her colleague Deborah Karner in late 2017. Most recently Colleen has begun a study into traumatic brain injuries and trauma, and the role spontaneity plays in recovery. She is also now working towards becoming a Certified Brain Injury Specialist.

Brandy has dedicated her life to advocating for children and young adults in her community. Crystal is the founder and owner of Believe Autism in Jacksonville, Florida. Also a BCBA, Crystal combines her passion to help children with autism and their families with her love for dance, as well as provides various opportunities through art classes, tutoring, and support groups. Brandy and Crystal are members of our SkillCorps® Alumni community, having traveled with the Global Autism Project on SkillCorps volunteer trips to several of our partner sites, including SOREM in India and Rumah Tiara in Indonesia — which you may remember from episodes 6 and 16. The Global Autism Project provides sustainable clinical, administrative, and leadership training to autism centers seeking guidance. SkillCorps is an opportunity for self-advocates and professionals to travel to our partner sites around the world and work directly with their local teachers and therapists. For more information about our SkillCorps program, please listen to episode 4, featuring a round table discussion with three members of our community. As a SkillCorps alum myself, it was really fun to hear Brandy and Crystal describe how they’ve grown both personally and professionally from participating in our volunteer trips. We talk about their takeaways on supervision, teamwork, and cultural humility. You’ll hear us mention Leadership Academy, which is a workshop our organization provides to prepare future SkillCorps trip leaders. Another term I use in the interview is RBT, which stands for Registered Behavior Technician. This is the direct-care level position that usually works 1:1 with clients. In today's episode, Brandy and Crystal candidly share their experiences as Black women in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis, their views on how the stigma around disabilities makes it harder for families in under-resourced areas to access services, and some of their ideas to make the field more diverse. ----more----We appreciate your time.
