Welcome to episode 190 with Philippa Dawson, who is a writer, producer and performer who is also the creator of Character Flaw, a show about her experiences with ADHD and how it's impacted her throughout her life. In this episode I chat to Pip about her show, about living with ADHD and how this has impacted her mental health over the years. We chat about the before and after of diagnosis, her experiences with medication and how different aspects of her identity are wrapped up in her ADHD. We also about Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria, emotional dysregulation and hyper focus and we chat about dealing with depression, forgetting to eat and going to the Edinburgh Fringe. It was wonderful to chat to Pip about all of this stuff. Her life and experiences and ADHD all interact in both hilarious and challenging ways and I think a lot of people will relate to that. On episode 69 of the road.cc Podcast, we delve into the reasons and behavioural patterns that underpin most, if not all, of the 887 (and counting) examples of close passes and dangerous driving that make up our Near Miss of the Day series, aided by a road safety expert currently undertaking a PhD study on the relationship between motorists and cyclists on the road. Will Cubbin, the manager of the Safer Essex Roads Partnership was inspired to dive into academia following an unfortunate encounter with a close passing driver, who lambasted him for being ‘in the middle of the road', Will chats to Ryan about his PhD research and the interesting methodology behind his new co-authored study titled ‘Close passes caught on camera: How knowledge and behavioural norms relate to perceptions of liability when cars overtake cyclists'. In part 2, Ryan and Suvi catch up with road.cc and off.road.cc contributor Matt Page, who is also one of the people behind the sold out Battle of the Beach gravel (and sand, obvs) event that is taking place between the 6-7 April. With UK road racing experiencing numerous struggles and diminishing numbers, are gravel events what is needed to make cycling events in Britain boom again? For more details on this podcast visit: https://www.journeybeyondweightloss.com/blog/103 Despite the prevalence and growing rates of obesity, many still don't fully understand that weight gain is just one symptom of a much bigger problem. After spending 15 years in Obesity Medicine, I'm here to reiterate this important message: Obesity isn't due to any lack of self-control or moral weakness - it's simply an illness like any other! It is not weak character that causes weight gain; instead, those extra pounds are just one symptom associated with a chronic and complex medical disease. So let's ditch any preconceived notions we may have had previously and focus on treating Obesity as what it really is – a true health issue requiring real solutions. Episode Highlights: (02:24) On June 18th, 2013, the American Medical Association voted to recognize Obesity as a disease. Weight gain is actually just one symptom of Obesity. Obesity is a dangerous, a life-threatening disease. It kills 320,000 people every year in the United States alone, and it's a disease that needs to be taken seriously. (07:57) With the disease of Obesity, almost everything is out of balance, and we see signs of these imbalances in terms of elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, diabetes, high estrogen states, infertility, weight gain and lots of other issues. And the reason for the weight gain is because there's an error in fat metabolism, that's what causes the weight gain. (10:25) One of the hallmarks of Obesity is inflammation. As a matter of fact, Obesity is a disease of inflammation. It's chronic inflammation, which means that it's long-lasting inflammation and the inflammation is affecting every part of the body, damaging tissues and causing accelerated aging. You could say that inflammation is destroying the body from the inside out.

Whether you know someone who is an over-helper or YOU are one, this episode will prove an important listen. This topic — addicted to helping others — recently came back to the surface for Chalene in a major way. And while she has worked on herself in regard to this issue (including therapy) and has seriously improved over the years… like all flaws, it doesn't just disappear 100% forever. It may just creep back in from time to time — which is why it's imperative to continue to keep ourselves in check. Today, that's exactly what Chalene intends on doing as she: shares recent examples from her life, varying in intensity, as to her need to help others (often at the expense of her own happiness and productivity), explains the psychology behind this bad habit and offers a checklist that'll help you discern whether or not you are, indeed, an over-helper. Fear is something that we all deal with from time to time. However, sometimes when fear seems to get a grip on us, we feel like we have failed. When this happens, we are slammed with anxiety and shame, which is absolutely miserable. Today, on the podcast, Dr. Doug Hardy is back to remind us that being fearful is not a character flaw. Instead of trying to push fear aside, God is inviting us to acknowledge it and redirect our focus to God's welcome and embrace. Doug Hardy serves as Professor of Spiritual Formation at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO where he helps students who are preparing for pastoral ministry to pray as they learn. He is a spiritual director in addition to teaching and leading retreats and pilgrimages. Dr. Hardy is familiar with the complexities of perfectionism in his own life, and now is able to come alongside and encourage others to notice and respond to the God who loves them unconditionally. Doug is married to a hospital chaplain; together they have three grown children. The Foundry Press has published two of his small group studies geared for use in local churches: Christian Disciplines: Creating Time & Space for God (2013) and Prayer: Sharing Intimate Space with God (2015). ------- I always love connecting with you and hearing how the podcasts are making a difference in your pursuit of wholeness! On this podcast episode of My Job Here Is Done, we tread lightly - sorry, no, we stomp on the heart of - that one thing that always has bugged you … about you. Everybody has one, or two or twelve character flaws. But today, we are going to try to narrow in on just the one biggest flaw. We call it your personal FUBAR or your own SNAFU. It's the one thing that you've ignored, suppressed, denied, or feared all of your adult life. It's holding you back, it won't let you advance, it hurts inside and you might not even know why. In the end, you will need to figure it out someday, and the sooner the better.Ever listen to an old wise person who says something like this to you, “had I known that back then …?” That's the sound of a person who wished they found their SNAFU much earlier. We think your personal SNAFU can be tackled and defeated if we change the game in our favor. Kelli and Dave talk about the exact right point in time to make a change so it sticks and is effective. In the podcast, you'll hear that fixing the SNAFU problem is not about reinventing yourself, or taking a self-improvement class, or even trying to be a better version of yourself. Those are other challenges that can actually be improved on continuously - and you should be improving on them every day,No, the self-owned SNAFU needs proper timing and surgical precision to reverse. Speaking of timing, here are the three break-points we discuss:At the time you change your job positionAt the time you take on a job at a brand new companyAt the time you find yourself dealing with a life eventWe then talk about some common SNAFU's such as fabricating the truth (lying), or purposely creating conflict or having to always have the last word. We offer some suggestions about how to identify your own SNAFU's by reflecting on your past and focusing on changing things you are already aware of that need work. (you know what these things are) Also helpful is asking for feedback from people who know you well, or acting on the feedback that you received in the past and ignored. Once you figure out the one thing you want to work on, stay on track by checking in with yourself as part of your daily routine, identify if you were successful and congratulate yourself, and take pride in your progress. At the end of the day, you likely know exactly what you'd like to change but you resist for some reason, and usually that reason is that it's not the right time to make a visible or palpable change. Take advantage of those few times when you DO have that opportunity and work on just one thing, the BIG thing you've always wished you could change. You'll be glad you did and so will everyone else around you.Visit the My Job Here Is Done website to learn more, contact us, and sign-up for very infrequent non-spammy tidbits by email if you'd like. Thanks for listening!Dave and Kelli

George Floyd and DMX are men whose lives mattered, yet both of them are positioned in the popular media as junkies and losers. Bad, trifflin’ Black men whose lives were destined for the grave. We know Derek Chauvin killed George Floyd with his hand in his pocket as though his life meant nothing, and yet the conversation is more focused on if George would have JUST gotten in the police car. Much like if DMX had JUST not used drugs, he too would still be alive. This week, Dr. Venus slows it way down to talk about what addiction is, what it is not, and how we need to change the conversation to see it more about well-being than about willpower. She discusses addiction as a survival strategy, and how being poor and Black creates its own DNA strands of PTSD. Dr. Venus reminds us that addiction doesn’t always just look like a junkie. We can be addicted to anything including food, work, relationships, and they all can take a toll on our health and quality of life. When we look at it from this lens, we vilify people less and come from a place of understanding and peace. When YOU are threatened, scared, overwhelmed, feel like the world is against you, or haunted by the pain of the past, how do YOU cope? How do you survive? Let’s talk about it. Key Takeaways: [2:02] There are two different narratives when it comes to addiction. For White people, struggling with addiction means they get grace and mercy. For Black Men and Women, addiction is seen as a character trait that makes them weak, broken, and worthless. [2:50] No one chooses to be an addict, and having an addiction does not make you weak or less than a deserving human. Addiction is not a character trait. It is a brain disorder and a medical condition. Yet, the headlines scream the most vile and ugly things, specifically when it comes to Black Men as addicts. [4:33] Dr. Venus breaks down how addiction plays a role in the stress response Black Men and Women feel just trying to survive day to day. It dates back to African ancestry and since we’ve been here, we have been in a moment of crisis. The target on your back is sanctioned by the government, and being Black is stressful no matter if you are rich or poor, queer or straight, you are born into stereotypes you didn’t earn. When things start compounding, addictions can be born as a type of survival strategy. She gives the example of DMX, who was rejected by his mother at a very young age. You add in poverty and a biased education system, and it is possible to see why someone would turn to an addiction. [11:52] Addictive behavior doesn’t have to look like a crackhead. Michael Jackson was just trying to sleep and his White doctor ended up giving him the wrong dose and killing him. We need to expand what we call an addict. It can be wine or drugs, but it can also be gambling, sex, food, or even just the need to be right or liked by everyone. [14:38] White people use the trope of the Black Man as an addict so often to justify killing us. It’s infuriating and will continue unless we change the conversation and the power structures at play. We’re watching the conversation be manipulated into “yeah, but he was a drug addict.” [19:44] It screams in headlines that our lives don’t matter, and they are wrong. DMX was a flawed man, but flawed doesn’t equal justifying their murder or celebrating their demise. Nor does it equal tarnishing their name while they are here, or after they have gone. [20:22] What are you addicted to? You can be addicted to red bottoms, to being important, to being in the number one spot. It doesn’t have to look like a crackhead. If you can’t NOT do it, you are an addict. Addiction doesn’t equal bad, it equals human. Survival is hard. [24:52] Being an addict doesn’t mean you have no willpower. We need to change the conversation and make it about well-being and less about a character trait. Then, we can help people get the tools and strategies to cope with their addictions. [28:15] If we can relate to addiction as a survival strategy, it starts being about well-being, a chemical issue, and stops being about being weak or flawed. That is a different conversation with no condemnation. Addiction is not a character flaw, it’s part of the human condition. [34:21] Dr. Venus heard a rumor about Jay-Z possibly buying DMX’s catalog to give it to his children and set them up for life. If that happens, that is a Billionaire move and an example of what happens when Black Men and Women make enough money to make changes big enough to impact generations to come. Quotes: “Addiction doesn’t equal bad, it equals human.” “Addiction is not a character flaw, it’s part of the human condition.” “It screams in headlines that our lives don’t matter, and they are wrong.” “When we talk about addiction being about well-being and not a character trait, we start to change the conversation and to relate to it rather than vilifying them.” “If we can have addiction become about wellness instead of being a bad person, once we take on that conversation the world will too.” Mentioned: Dr. Venus Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram “Hot Mess Millionaire” Amazon Pilot ”Hot Mess Millionaire” Complete Series (https://www.youtube.com/c/DrVenusOpalReese) Join the conversation! However, unless we can tell the difference between what is a true personality trait versus what is a character flaw, we run the risk of causing harm to or being harmed by others. It's quite common in today's climate for people to claim that a particular character flaw is in fact a virtue, or part of their essential self. This created a lot of confusion and turmoil in relationships, and disrupts our ability or willingness to work on our true character defects. QUESTIONS OR TOPIC REQUESTS? Welcome to Episode 33 where we talk about the notion that a single woman must have character issues, otherwise she'd be a wife. This hot pot of ridiculousness comes from a recently published article where a pulpit hustling pastor asserts some pretty outlandish principles that are supposedly "biblically based". We couldn't talk about this without having a woman's point of view so....To help us discuss and make sense of this is Sierra T and Sharelle B of the extraordinary podcast Headwraps and Lipsticks. This is an insightful and delightfully hilarious episode that you will thoroughly enjoy. Rej also drops an HBCU moment and the ladies emphatically let you know what HBCU they rep!
