Never Putt Short: Jeff McCabe on Intentionality, Failure, and Building Hard Truth

What does it take to turn 325 acres of Indiana woods into a national spirits brand and an "adult Disneyland" that pulls visitors from across the country? In this episode of The Upgraded Man Podcast, Chris Anderson sits down with Jeff McCabe, co-founder of Hard Truth Distilling Co., for a wide-ranging conversation on craft, mindset, family, and the long game of building something that lasts. Jeff is a Naval Academy graduate and former Navy pilot who went on to run a major part of the business travel and corporate card division at American Express before stepping away to chase a different kind of dream in Brown County. Alongside his partners and his own family, he built Big Woods, Quaff On, and Hard Truth into an experience that visitors remember long after they leave. In this conversation, you'll hear: Why a whiskey tastes better at 93 proof than 90, and what that obsession with detail reveals about doing anything well The Charlie Munger philosophy on the wall of his boardroom, and the wild family connection to Munger that Jeff only learned recently What the Naval Academy taught him about failing, and why learning to fail removed his fear of it How he leads people who don't share his mindset by listening first and meaning what he says The realities of running a business with his son, daughter, and son-in-law all under one roof Where he was on the morning of 9/11, and how being out of New York let him help in a way no one else could The McCabe family history, from Irish Gallowglass roots to two uncles' bars and a now-legendary dance hall story The Byron Nelson lesson that stuck with him for life: never putt short Whether you're building a company, leading a team, or just trying to navigate whatever life throws your way, Jeff's blend of hard-won wisdom and Midwest grit offers something to take home. Hard Truth Distilling Co. is located in Nashville, Indiana, in the heart of Brown County, and its spirits are now distributed across 38 states. Plan a visit to walk the property, take a distillery tour, or build a custom experience of your own. Jeff explains why comfort is the most dangerous place a business owner can be, how your greatest strengths may actually be capping your growth, what true commitment looks like when you're willing to remove distractions and train like a business athlete, and why capital is easy when your fundamentals are right - but impossible when they're broken. He closes with a powerful concept from Dr. Ben Carson on personal responsibility and the internal locus of control that separates operators who reach their potential from those who hand their power to external circumstances. Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week in our continuing Women's Herstory Month series, we're in another new country--from southern Africa last week we're landing in Scandinavia on our first trip to Norway via Sudan, Zambia, The Philippines, Netherlands, Ghana and South Africa--all places my guest this week has called home. Sarah Osman is a cognitive psychologist, global development specialist, and social entrepreneur with twenty years of experience across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Born in Khartoum, Sudan, and shaped by a life lived across multiple continents, she has built her career at the intersection of applied behavioral science and international development, helping major organizations translate insights about human decision-making into programs that create lasting social change. As the founder of Osman Advisory Services, Sarah has worked with international organizations such as the Council of Europe, World Vision, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union on some of the most complex behavioral challenges in global development. In 2024, she founded Ela, a membership community for women of color building their own consulting practices. Ela is grounded in the conviction that structural inequity in the consulting sector cannot be solved by individual effort alone: it requires community, peer accountability, and the kind of behavioral design thinking that Sarah has spent two decades applying in the field. Ela members are already experiencing tangible transformation in how they position themselves and grow with confidence. Sarah is currently building a new platform for Africa-focused professionals who want to harness the power of behavioral and consumer insights in their work and sector. Currently based in Oslo, Sarah is a true ‘glocal' citizen: Sudanese by heritage, Pan-African by spirit, European by dwelling, and wholly at home in the space between local realities and global systems. Five years after her first appearance, Allison Walsh welcomes Elizabeth Tran back to the show to reflect on the evolution that changed everything — from navigating corporate uncertainty and imposter syndrome to building Digit-Eli, a successful website design and SEO business serving women entrepreneurs.Elizabeth shares the defining moments that shaped her growth, including being laid off, betting on herself, hiring her first assistant, raising her rates, and learning to separate confidence from external validation. Guided by Allison, her longtime mentor who believed in her potential long before Elizabeth fully believed in herself, the conversation explores how mentorship, alignment, and self-trust accelerated her path forward. The discussion highlights the power of personal branding, why confidence is built through action rather than perfection, and how a well-crafted website can reflect achievements many women forget to celebrate. Whether you're growing a side hustle, scaling a service-based business, or learning to charge your worth, this conversation reinforces that belief is often the first — and most powerful — business decision you'll ever make.Connect with Elizabeth Tran:Instagram: digit.eliWebsite: digit-eli.com

If you're at the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey and secretly wondering, “Am I even cut out for this?” then this episode is for you.In this conversation, we talk honestly about what no one prepares you for when you start building something of your own:the self-doubt, the identity confusion, the feeling that everyone else knows what they're doing while you're making it up as you go.Because the truth is, we all start there. We all start as imposters. We all feel inadequate before we feel capable. And most of us don't become entrepreneurs because it was a lifelong dream, we fall into it, and then have to figure it out from there. In this episode, we unpack:How to pivot when your passion isn't what people are willing to pay forThe emotional reality of building a brand from scratch (and why it's normal to feel lost)How to know if entrepreneurship is actually for youThe difference between passion projects and doing free work strategicallyHow to build a reputation, a network, and momentum — especially in a city like LAWhy identity clarity matters when you pivot (and why having “two identities” confuses the market)How to expand your brand into new markets and navigate (reverse) culture shockWhat integrity looks like when doing business with friends — and what to do when it gets messyMore than anything, this conversation is here to remind you of one thing:You're not crazy. You're not behind. And you're not alone in this.Entrepreneurship isn't about having it all figured out. It's about staying in the game long enough to learn who you are, what you don't want, and what you're willing to take ownership of and figure out. If you're building, pivoting, or quietly questioning everything, this episode will meet you exactly where you are.Chapters:00:00 Introduction to Zemo and His Journey01:34 Zemo's Early Entrepreneurial Path04:04 Challenges and Realizations in Entrepreneurship08:12 Strategic Growth and Free Work12:20 Navigating Market Demands and Pivots17:06 Adapting to Industry Changes and Future Outlook21:50 Balancing Multiple Careers22:40 Navigating Identity Shifts24:36 The Importance of Clear Positioning27:08 Collaborative Culture in LA29:33 Friendship and Business37:32 Expanding Business Globally38:13 Cultural Differences in Business41:55 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsConnect with Zemo on IGFollow Seemingly Virtual on IG Connect with me:IG: https://www.instagram.com/whereboundariesdissolvepodcast?igsh=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA%3D%3D&utm_source=qrTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@helena.arjuna?_t=8oSbtTilPSQ&_r=1LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/helenasuter/ Youtube: https://youtube.com/@whereboundariesdissolvepodcast?si=g63NToOK45W1CiBI Support the show

Send us a textWhat happens when your dream career no longer fits your life? Shannon Russell faced this question after a successful run as a television producer at MTV and in Hollywood. When motherhood shifted her priorities, Shannon made the bold decision to walk away from the entertainment industry and forge a new entrepreneurial path.Shannon's story breaks the conventional wisdom that we must stay in our lane. Coming from a blue-collar family where her parents worked the same jobs their entire lives, she was the first to attend college and leave her hometown. Her journey took her from broadcast communications student to television producer in New York and Los Angeles, living what many would consider a glamorous dream job.The birth of her first child changed everything. Suddenly, the demanding schedule, constant travel, and intense pressure of television production conflicted with her desire to be present for her family. Rather than seeing this as the end of her ambitions, Shannon viewed it as an opportunity to write a new chapter. Despite well-meaning interventions from industry friends and her husband, she trusted her instincts and began exploring entrepreneurial options.Shannon found her next act in purchasing a children's STEM education franchise—what she calls a "business in a box" that provided structure and support for a first-time business owner. Within two years, she ranked among the top three franchisees in the organization. As her business flourished, she discovered a passion for helping other women, particularly mothers, navigate similar career transitions.Today, Shannon runs Second Act Success, coaching women to leverage their professional experience to build businesses that provide both fulfillment and flexibility. Her new book "Start Your Second Act: How to Change Careers, Build a Business and Create Your Best Life" launches May 7th, and her podcast features inspiring stories of women who've successfully reinvented themselves professionally.Shannon's message is powerful in its simplicity: "Keep going, give yourself grace, and it will all work out." She encourages listeners to stop being sheep, pursue their unique paths, and believe in their ability to create multiple successful chapters in life. Ready to break out of your lane and start your own second act? In this episode, I talk about the idea that we can hold two seemingly opposite truths at the same time - and how that can actually be where our real growth and success as entrepreneurs live. I'm so glad you're here for another mindset-focused episode of Eat Blog Talk. Today, I'm diving into a topic that's been heavy on my heart lately—duality in entrepreneurship. As entrepreneurs, we often think we have to fix our flaws before we can feel successful, but what if it's actually about holding space for both our strengths and imperfections? I'm sharing a story from the Flavor Media Summit that beautifully illustrates how powerful it can be to embrace the “both/and” in ourselves. Action Plan: 1 - Acknowledge duality in your journey: Notice when you're feeling two things at once and give both feelings permission to exist. 2 - Resist the urge to fix yourself first: You don't need to wait until you're fearless or confident to move forward—just start. 3 - Stay present in your imperfections: True success comes from showing up, even when things feel messy or imperfect. 4 - Honor your contradictions: You can be both proud and nervous, grateful and overwhelmed—this is normal and powerful. 5 - Practice naming the dualities: Say them out loud or journal them—“I am both X and Y”—to build resilience and self-compassion.
