Let's get political folks! As mental health overall has gotten more attention in the media over the last 4 years, so has the very important topic of PMADs, or Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. After the latest CDC findings on the alarming maternal mortality rate, many facets of government are starting to pay attention to mothers and birthing individuals and the toll that pregnancy and child-rearing can take on their mental health.Today, we have a returning guest on the show, Paige Bellenbaum, LCSW. Paige is the Founding Director and Chief External Relations Officer at The Motherhood Center of New York. She discusses the baby steps that are being taken to protect and elevate mothers in NY and America at large, although she points out that it is just a drop in the ocean of change that is required to truly support mothers in this country. She touches on some new research and statistics that have shockingly helped change the narrative on maternal support. We discuss the highly divisive and high-tension topics surrounding motherhood and child care in America during a very heated election year. For 20 years, Paige worked in the non-profit sector, holding senior leadership positions at Hamilton Family Center Homeless Shelter, The Partnership for the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity, and Settlement Housing Fund. She has worked in the field of public policy, advocacy, community organizing and direct practice with disadvantaged communities including homeless families and incarcerated young adults and has held several appointed and elected political positions including the District Leader of Brooklyn's 52nd Assembly District. After her first child was born, Paige suffered from severe postpartum depression and anxiety that nearly ended her life. However, once she began to heal, she became committed to fighting for PMAD education, screening, and treatment so that no more women would have to suffer silently. She drafted legislation in New York State championed by State Senator Liz Krueger, mandating hospitals to provide education on PMADs and strongly encouraging screening of all new and expecting mothers. This bill was signed into law in 2014. She has continued to be an outspoken maternal mental health advocate and clinician and uses her story as a tool for change. Paige works closely with multiple New York City agencies on maternal mental health best practice and policy, including the NYPD, DOHMH's Maternal Hospital Quality Improvement Network, and the Nurse Family Partnership, and the Administration for Children's Services.  She was a member of the NYC Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee and currently sits on the NYS Maternal Mental Health Working Group. She has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, NPR, PBS Newshour, Fortune, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.Connect with her at:themotherhoodcenter.com

Superintendent Chris Ragsdale and Chief School Leadership Officer Dr. Jasmine Kullar addressed educational leaders, emphasizing Cobb County School District's priorities of creating the best learning environment, simplifying teaching and learning methods, and utilizing data for decision-making. The event also introduced changes in leadership positions, with Sherri Hill becoming Cobb's new Chief of Staff and Dr. Kullar assuming her previous role. Read more about this at mdjonline.com     Story 2: redetermination   Since the expiration of the federal public health emergency in April, nearly 100,000 Georgians have lost their Medicaid coverage, according to the state Department of Community Health (DCH). As part of the year-long process of reassessing eligibility for Medicaid recipients, Georgia began processing renewal applications for over 216,000 individuals in June. Out of these, 64,423 were renewed, while 95,578 lost their coverage. The majority of those who lost coverage were terminated due to procedural reasons, with the DCH lacking the necessary information to determine eligibility. Approximately 57,000 renewal applications are still pending. The DCH aims to complete the redetermination process for all Medicaid enrollees in Georgia by May 2024.   Story 3: s cobb   Cobb County is currently overseeing a $30 million road improvement project on South Cobb Drive in Smyrna. The project aims to enhance non-vehicular movement along the corridor, including pedestrian paths and roadways. Plans include raised medians, bus stops, and multi-use paths for pedestrians and cyclists. The Cobb Board of Commissioners approved an agreement allowing Smyrna to pursue federal funding for the project. Smyrna has already allocated $17 million from its special-purpose local-option sales tax and the Atlanta Regional Commission. Smyrna will contribute $17.5 million in local funding, with oversight from Cobb County, until Smyrna receives certification from the Georgia Department of Transportation to sponsor the project. They disagreed with allocating $342,000 to consultant Griffin & Strong for examining purchasing practices. While they voted to approve the consent agenda, both commissioners voiced their opposition. Quite frankly, they are exhausted, and many of them are working environments in environments where there are teacher shortages. They are heroes who can only operate on fumes for so long. And so we need to collectively find ways to make it as easy as possible for them to get the support that they need.”“AI, when it's done right, like other technologies, should save you a lot of time. And it should free you up to do the things that are most human and most impactful.”“Stay laser-focused on the wants and needs of your intended audience. In a world of endless boring press releases and webinars, the way to stand out, in my experience, is to understand what people want and then give it to them. And if you don't know, ask them! People love to talk about their problems. Ask them what frustrates them, what else have they tried, what would fix their problem, what evidence they'd want to see what change they care about in the world.”“Remember, it's never about you. It's always about them.”“I'm most hopeful that we'll continue to make progress towards learning how to use technology to better support students and teachers. Today we visit with Jeff & Alesa Miller, US MIssionaries with the Assemblies of God. They work in the mission of Church Mobilization connecting churches in need with those who can meet those needs.   Jeff & Alesa Miller Jeff & Alesa have known each other for 43 years and will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in June 2023. They pastored for over 30 years before going into their current ministry. The couple have planted churches and served in all sizes of ministries, from tiny churches to mega churches.    Church Mobilization Jeff & Alesa serve as US Missionaries with the Assemblies of God in the Church Mobilization Department. They work with both the Kansas & Oklahoma Assemblies of God Districts to assist them with projects that the churches/ministries in those districts might have. They travel, meeting with Pastors, Churches and District Leaders sharing the mission of Church Mobilization.  Church Mobilization covers three aspects: RV volunteers, Church Teams, and Church Development. We simply connect ministries with needs with people that can meet those needs from clerical to construction, While working on projects ourselves as well.     Passion Through the program Jeff and Alesa are passionate about helping local churches be as strong as they can be. They strive to make connections, from Clerical to Construction, and focus on mobilizing the church for ministry.  Some of the connections they have made include: mechanics, carpenters, plumbers, beauticians, dentists, creative designers, website developers, worship leaders, piano players, tech teams, and much more.  They believe in taking the hand of someone a little ahead in your journey and someone a little farther behind you and marching together. This is an example of mentoring at its finest. Every need that a church as we believe is already inside the church walls, it just may be the church down the street or across the state. - Alesa Miller   Rise up Soldiers! Churches are better together. It is time to rise up and be a team of soldiers.  When we think of the harvest, we think, “We've gotta have workers”. Harvest time is when we have to work the hardest. Farmers work the hardest when it is time to harvest the crop. They have a limited time to bring in the harvest and in farming communities you can see neighbors and communities working together to aid in the harvest.  We can learn a lot from this example. It is time to set aside our differences and come together for the good of the Kingdom! How can you step up to use your giftings in a way to help build the Kingdom? In episode 003, I talk about how churches in surrounding communities worked together in unity. We are all striving to reach the same destination. We can all benefit from a little help along the journey! If we are going to see the harvest, we have to have a place to plant the harvest first with fertile soil. We need volunteers to help aid churches in being the best they can be in their neighborhood. If they need a bathroom remodeled, others can step up to help in the construction, painting, and cleaning. While this is happening there may be other members helping with office work or even outreach or children's ministry. Are you willing to pay the price to see one person get to know Jesus?   Is God Calling You? Is God nudging you to step out and do something today? Don't wait for a net to catch you. Trust that God will open the doors that you need Him to.  What is the Holy Spirit prompting you to do? He is asking you” Do you trust me?” Reach out to Jeff & Alesa Miller to find out how you can connect and get involved in the ministry of Mobilizing Churches for Ministry.     Connect with Jeff & Alesa Miller: Website: www.Millers4usmissions.com  Email: millers4usmissions@gmail.com Book: “Behind the Parsonage Walls” by Alesa Miller  Connect with Jacklin:  Effective Ministry Solutions Facebook Effective Ministry Solutions Instagram Preparing the Church for the Harvest Webpage This episode was originally published on effectiveministrysolutions.com/episode017.

This week Rob sat down with Lydia Green, a bisexual Jewish organizer and Democratic party activist currently running for District Leader of NYC Assembly District 52 in Brooklyn. We chatted about her bisexual journey; the intersectin of her sexuality with her gender, Judaism, and disability; how her identity affected her interest in politics, and specifically how her bisexuality informs her campaign for District Leader and her goals if elected; how local government bureaucracy ends up benefitting incumbents, maintaining the status quo, and keeping out fresh voices and progressive ideas; why it's important to elect more queer representatives across the country; how to hold the Democratic party accountable; and much more!
