New banger from Brazil's Odiar and another on from Vacaville's System 86! Mostly new ones on this show. Staci welcomes Jerome Reuter, a film critic and historian whose work can be found in Diabolique magazine and various online publications. He is also the author of a new book, Electric Funeral: Black Sabbath and the Cultural Landscape 1970-1975, which is a scholarly work that drills down on the importance of the band's first albums. Discussion covers the cultural zeitgeist of the time, which includes the Boris Karloff film “Black Sabbath,” Aleister Crowley, the Vietnam War, and much more.

En este episodio centramos la conversación en el trascendental "Paranoid" de Black Sabbath, conversando sobre sus canciones, el contexto de su grabación, las ideas originales para algunas canciones, su influencia en el desarrollo del heavy metal, y muchos temas más.
It's almost October, and we can't start this spooky season without a session with the Prince of Darkness himself! September is a big anniversary month for a lot of things in the Ozzyverse - Black Sabbath's "Paranoid", Ozzy's debut solo album "Blizzard of Ozz", and of course "No More Tears" all dropped in Septembers! So this week we've got a lot of story to tell - we start with the purest of beginnings, and listen to Earth's "The Rebel" before everything went dark mwahaha - we stop off on "Paranoid" to attend an "Electric Funeral", talk about Sabbath lore and Satanism before making our way to the first solo record and the lawsuit-inducing jam "Suicide Solution". We talk our way through the next ten years to the song of the day, "No More Tears", which leaves us a little speechless. When we recover, we talk about the next ten years, stopping off at "Down to Earth" to catch "Gets Me Through", ending up in 2020 to watch the video for "Under the Graveyard". What a career, what a legend, what an episode! Watch video of our discussion, as well as the video clips and pictures we reference on the show along with us, on Patreon! On this week in 1971 the album regarded as one of the, if not THE most important album in heavy metal history was released in the United States - Black Sabbath’s second studio album 'Paranoid'. We’ll get into the stories behind all eight tracks including the last-minute addition to the album which became not only Black Sabbath’s most popular song but one considered to be among the greatest in rock and metal history. Also we’ll get to the controversial album title that was ultimately rejected, plus just what is that on the cover of the album and why was it chosen? TRACKLISTING:SIDE ONE1. "War Pigs"2. "Paranoid"3. One thing this merry band of Metal Nerderers will agree on: we LOVE us some Black Sabbath! And with fall being the quintessentially ideal season for Sabbath (and with Witches Night right around the corner), we felt it was the perfect time to jump deep into the ultra-creepy end and get into the brutally heavy modern day classic that really freaked people out a half a century ago in 1970 (!): Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”.Anytime we get to talk about Black Sabbath, it’s always a good time! It’s the fall, so take a get-ready pill, prepare your favorite relaxer, shut out the rest of the world for a while while you enjoy said relaxer and JOIN US as we head back to 1970, back to dark wood paneling and orange shag carpeting and back to a time when the darkest, heaviest metal band on earth was about to completely change the game with an album that would go down in history as one of the finest (if not also one of THE most critically important) moments in ALL of metal.Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episodeConsider supporting us at Patreon - patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast You'll find some extra goodies there too!Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merchand kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast appListen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Play or wherever you get your Podcasts.Follow us on the Socials:Facebook - Instagram - TwitterEmail: metalnerdery@gmail.com Show Notes:(00:00): Squeeze it…#noteven / Black Sabbath: Paranoid (check out our Deep Cuts Episode.Podcast)/ The perfect backdrop for a Black Sabbath Dive (#onmicburp)(04:10): – The album cover (weirdest album cover ever???) / One half of a century of Black Sabbath’s Paranoid goodness / Blessed be the #sabbathjams / #Walpurgis (Wait, WHAT?) #woe2you / Various covers of War Pigs / #metalnerderyASMR / ***RANT ALERT*** #thehatetank(13:47): – Iron Man and WrAstlin’ #twomohawks #dontworryaboutit / Implications involving Paranoid #dontdenythepowerof / Paranoid: more punchy and better songsmanship / #prenwobhmnwobhm / Metal Bane wishes to read your emails, EMAIL US at metalnerdery@gmail.com /Various releases from 1970 (and the Jethro Tull vs Metallica incident; check out our Black Sabbath Episode, to find out the tangentionalality of Jethro Tull to Black Sabbath)(23:06): – A time machine to go to shows? Back before corporations acquired (and systematically destroyed) rock radio by playing the same 10 songs on perpetual repeat into the dirt, radio disc jockeys used to actually have some control over their “playlists” and would sometimes throw on a song that wasn’t a normal rock radio favorite: maybe something that wasn’t a “hit single”, or something for which there was no “music video”; something longer, something unusual, something off the beaten path: we call these Deep Cuts. That’s what us Metal Nerds call “The Good Stuff”. And when it comes to Black Sabbath, it’s ALL Good Stuff!!! There’s just one problem: because WE THE NERDS here at Metal Nerdery are already so intimately familiar with what shall be henceforth known as “The First Six”, it was kind of a challenge for us to each pick our favorite 6 deep cuts from The First Six Black Sabbath albums. There were a few that overlapped on our respective listicles but we tried to go as deeply as we could to give those of you who are only familiar with side 1 of ‘Paranoid’ a nice sampling of what we call “That GOOD Sabbath”. JOIN US after you’ve finished your bowl (of breakfast cereal) as we discuss our favorite “deep cuts” from our favorite first 6 albums by our favorite First Godfathers of Metal, Black Sabbath. In Part II, we break down Side 2 of Black Sabbath's second studio album, with "Electric Funeral," "Hand of Doom," "Rat Salad" and "Fairies Wear Boots." We also get into some debaucherous tales of Sabbath on the road, Ozzy's solo career and subsequent Sabbath reunions, the invention of the devil horn hand gesture, and the embarrassing stage gaffe parodied in the film "This is Spinal Tap." We'll also discuss Ozzy's latest solo album, just released in February 2020. Thank you again to my guest, Job Fickett!
YouTube Video: https://youtu.be/GaCZimRZVUo In this doom metal guitar lesson I teach you the entire rhythm and lead sections from Electric Funeral by Black Sabbath. The song is broken down into its main riffs, each demonstrated and explained in full detail. E Standard Tuning: E-A-D-G-B-E The song begins with the classic wah pedal intro riff in the key of E Minor and utilizes the E Natural Minor Scale {R, M2, b3, p4, p5, b6, b7}. The remainder of the song's riffs utilize elements from the E Blues Scale {R, b3, p4, b5, p5, b7} along with a M7 interval during the third riff.

Confira! E a promoção deste episódio é realmente imperdível: Valendo a edição deluxe do CD Dehumanizer do Black Sabbath. Responda a pergunta feita por Vitão Bonesso no episódio e participe. Neste episódio: Black Sabbath, Carro-Bomba, Judas Priest, Kill Devil Hill e Cathedral.
