We're catching up with Elliott and Andrea Johnson as they share all about Andrea's endometriosis diagnosis, the importance of emergency funds, and how God sustained their marriage "in sickness and in health." At the beginning of their marriage, God led Elliott and Andrea to get out of debt and manage their money in a totally counter-cultural way. They had no way of knowing then that in following his lead, God would provide not only the resources they needed for her to receive a life-changing surgery years later, but a life-giving career for Elliott to help others out of financial stress. Similarly, God put on Andrea's heart to create a social media account with the mission of encouraging women in their faith and relationship with him. Little did she know it would be through that social media account that God would lead her to her Endometriosis-excision surgeon and the opportunity to help other women as they navigate the world of endometriosis and restore their metabolic & hormonal health. They share how even through this painful season, the Lord brought forth a sweeter and stronger marriage than before, in a way only He can. They deal with a variety of topics but can be categorized as songs of promise, praise, and prayer. They give us insight as to what was going on in the lives of the people who wrote them and how they saw or looked for God in the midst of their situation. This is the book of Psalms. Although “populism” is a term that has been rigorously discussed and theorized in political science and communication studies, the term has received special attention ever since the political rise and presidency of Donald Trump. But what does populism actually mean, and how can we trace the lineage of populist conservative discourses that prefigured the Trump presidency? To guide us through the rhetorical history of this fraught concept, we are joined on the show today by Dr. Paul Elliott Johnson, Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh. His recently published book, I the People: The Rhetoric of Conservative Populism in the United States, tells a captivating story of how conservative politicians and rhetors from the mid-20th-century to the present have appealed to the values of “the people.” Johnson elucidates how the conservative variant of populism has reduced the category of “the American people” through its focus on a possessive individualism constantly under threat by new ways of being and modes of organization. This sense of “the people under siege” has been undergirded by a reactionary response to blackness, which is ultimately traceable to the US's foundation in settler-colonialism and chattel slavery. In our discussion, we talk through several of the rhetorical case studies in Johnson's book, including the political ascendency and presidency of Ronald Reagan, the 1994 midterm elections and the year of the “angry white male,” the astroturfed revanchist “Tea Party” surge during the Obama presidency, and the rise of Donald Trump and the contemporary right-wing. Finally, we discuss some alternative methods of articulating “the people” that might help to expand, rather than reduce, the meaning of US popular democracy.References:Beasley, V. B. (2011). Emma hosts Paul Elliott Johnson, Assistant Professor of Communications at the University of Pittsburgh, to discuss his recent book I The People: The Rhetoric of Conservative Populism, on the transformation of the conservative populist movements over the last century, and how they worked to define, and redefine, white America. Professor Johnson first works to define the malleable characteristics that guide conservative values, such as whiteness, the ability to make free decisions, and economic viability, before he and Emma get into the actual way that the right sought to define America, by its opposition to Blackness. This brings them to a quick exploration of the Black radical tradition, and its start with an emphasis on experience, before working to unpack how Blackness was used as a designation of pathological danger and negativity, and what it means to be un-American, from the "Welfare Queen" trope to healthcare. Professor Johnson then dives into how the end of the cold war put the US on the edge, ending their competition with the USSR which had driven their social justice advancements, technological advancements, and economic development over the last few decades, looking particularly at Reagan assuming his role at the pinnacle of conservatism working to join both libertarian conservatives and traditionalists against the threat of Blackness, and slavery at the hand of the state. He and Emma also dive into his more overt examples of juxtaposing true America with Blackness, as seen with his coining of the "Welfare Queen" term, and how this allowed him to put Blackness in the backseat during his 1984 reelection, instead focusing on the beauty of consumption and whiteness. They also explore figures like Newt Gingrich and how they shaped the identity of the American conservative in the ‘90s, with a focus on the angry white finance man, before wrapping up the interview by looking at the effect of the 2008 financial crisis in nearly undermining the real divides in the US, and how the Tea Party worked to completely obscure that through a re-establishment of Blackness and the slavery of the state under Obama as central threats to the US, ultimately working to the election of Donald Trump as a white, hyper-masculine head of the movement. Emma also covers Joe Manchin tanking Build Back Better, AKA what every leftist knew his Build Back Better goal was, as well as Bernie's response, and Chile's election. And in the Fun Half: Matt Lech gives a myth-busting seminar on Socialism's efficacy in Latin America in the wake of Boric's successful presidential campaign in Chile, Kowalski calls in to talk cashews impact on climate change, and the crew explores Charlamagne Tha God breaking down Kamala Harris in an interview with a simple Manchin-related question. This week we sit down with Rosario Davidson, a licensed Physician Assistant here in the City of Elizabeth to discuss her journey into the medical field and what she has learned along the way. We learn how, when she was in high school, she had no interest in the medical field or any of the sciences at all. She had a very different interest, but different things in her life drastically shifted what she would study in college and where she would end up afterwards. She shares some medical stories of things she has seen and experienced, including some of her own personal medical stories and how knowing how medicine and the human body work affected how she processed those things. She and Elliott also discuss how she views the biblical concept of healing while working within the art of medicine and how her faith helps her to relate to and help her patients. They're not kids anymore! Well, some of them anyway. This is part 3 of our "generations" series, and this week we're talking to Generation Z. Welcome to the generation who never knew a world without Google, is offended by peanuts, and whose goal it is to meme-ify everything. This week Elliott sits down with two Christ Fellowship members who fall into the Gen Z category -- Maressa Bento and Kaleb Boyd. Generation X is the generational classification for anyone born between 1997 and 2015. While some of them are still in school, the elder Gen Z members are already in college and well into their 20's. There's a lot to unpack in this episode, from how their humor revolves around memes and Tik Tok, to how they are the first tru digital natives, to how events in the late 90's and early 2000's completely altered what their educational experience would be like, to how Gen Zers relate to their Gen X parents. Elliott, Maressa, and Kaleb talk about how and why their generation is so much more sensitive and aware of others as compared to their parents and how they deal with an older generation who doesn't share that sensitivity. In our lightning round, we get a list of our Gen Zer's favrorite pieces of pop culture, from movies, to sports, and yes to memes. This is Generation Z's story. We're continuing our Generations series, and this time we're jumping forward to the 1990's and the Millennial generation. Millennials are the first digital natives in our world. Yes, they know how the Internet works, created social media, and have an unexplainable affinity for avocado toast, but they also have a much deeper story to tell. Generation Y, more commonly known as "Millennials," is the generational classification for anyone born between 1981 and 1996. This week Elliott, who is a Millennial himself, sits down with three other Millennials -- Leslie Chacon, Cristina Fernandes, and Eric Stanley. All three of them have been a part of our church for years. Each has served in our youth program, The Bridge. Leslie is also an active worship leader in our Sunday morning band, and Cristina has also helped our with our Trail Life kids group. In this conversation, we dive deep into just what makes a Millennial, what are the things that drive them, and how they view the world. We also explore the effects of how they emerged from college into the Great Recession of the mid 2000's, how the lack of jobs and housing crisis affected them and altered their goals in life, and how this all affects how they view the world compared to previous generations. And yes, the avocado toast came up once or twice. We also discuss how their experiences have affected how Millennials view the church and how the church deals with current issues in the world as well as how the churc can best meet and minister to their age group. In our Lightning Round, we take a trip back to the late 90's and early 2000's to reminisce on the trends of the day, including clothing styles and musical tastes. This is the Millennial story. It's time to go back in time! This is part 1 of a 3-part series on "generations." This week we are sitting down with three members of our community who are part of Gen X. We explore what made Gen Xers who they are, reminisce about life in the 80s, and learn what makes the MTV generation so special. Generation X is the generational classification for anyone born between 1965 and 1980. This week, representing Gen X, we talk to Diane Boyd, John Davidson, and Brian Mayfield. They have all been part of our Christ Fellowship community for several years, and some since the beginning. They serve in all different capacities. Diane is one of the elders of Christ Fellowship. John helps out with Kids Church, and Brian was one of the original four leaders who helped to start our youth ministry, The Bridge. Each of them share their experiences growing up in the 1980's from how Mtv defined their generation, how the economic shift in the United States in the 80s changed their families and impacted how they grew up and became self-reliant, their experience in college and how societial pressure influenced their lives, how cable television changed the culture in America, and what their experiences with the church changed over the past 40 years. We cover lots of topics in this one as well as take some time in the Lightning Round to reminisce about life and pop culture in the 1980's. This is Generation X's story. Creativity in ingrained within each of us. For some it flows out easier, but we all have the capability of creating. This episode is part one of a two-part series on creativity. This week, Elliott sits down with April Watkins, an artist and painter who grew up in the church and was a part of Christ Fellowship right from the very beginning. Her father, Bill Rimondi, was one of the founding pastors of Christ Fellowship. She grew up in our youth group, and then became one of the original leaders in our youth ministry, The Bridge. In 2009, April married her husband and they moved away to various places within and outside of the United States, so they are not currently active members of our church. Since moving, April has fully embraced a passion she began to develop while in high school of painting. Recently, she left her previous career in the medical field to pursue painting full-time. Elliott and April discuss what art and creativity are, what her personal creative process is and how she goes about creating her paintings, and why she defines her work as "prophetic art". This week, Elliott sits down with Pastor Harold to hear his story about how he is the "newest" pastor in Christ Fellowship but also not the newest, how he grew up in his parent's church and how that had a strong influence on who he became and how he leads. We learn that music was not his first love, and that he was involved in completely different kinds of activities growing up before he ever knew that he could sing. He shares the story of how he created his very first published album and what he learned in that process that eventually led him to becoming signed by a record label. We reminisce about his time as a youth pastor in The Bridge, and how all these things helped to shape and challenge him as he became the "Pastor Harold" that we see on stage every week. DC Beer's Richard and Mike speak with Elliott Johnson and Jahi Wartts of Soul Mega, one of the newest breweries in DC. Elliott and Jahi talk about the philosophy behind their company and their grassroots efforts to promote the Soul Mega brand. The Embodiment of GreatnessElliott and Jahi met through work about ten years ago. Both novice homebrewers at the time, they quickly began trading beers, then collaborating on brews, and finally scaling operations. After receiving positive feedback from a number of friends, they began making plans to establish their own brewery. When Elliott and Jahi started their brewery last year, they chose the name “Soul Mega,” which means “the embodiment of something great.” Indeed, they see Soul Mega not only as a brewery but as a lifestyle brand. Both co-founders embody this philosophy in their operations, as each uses his unique strengths to help bring excellent beer to the customer. Building Relationships Directly with DC CustomersElliott and Jahi have been working at the grassroots level to build their customer base since it began operations a year ago. They have presented their beer at several DC-area events, including Trill Grill Fest, and they are planning a number of popup events in the future (including a December 21, 2019, Festivus celebration). Soul Mega's beer is also available at Pub and the People, HalfSmoke, Mr. Braxton Bar & Kitchen, Present Company, and Capo Deli.Elliott and Jahi continue to improve the Soul Mega brand recognition by introducing themselves to as many locals as possible. As beer wholesalers, they recognize that customer relationship-building is the key to success in establishing a following in Washington DC.A Global Spin on the First BeerSoul Mega's first beer on the market is the Worldwide American Pale Ale. Jahi explained that Worldwide is a stylistic mix of several beer types from around the world, including American Pale Ale, American IPA, American Wheat, and Belgian. Its diverse flavors appeal to multiple flavor palates so it can be enjoyed by all. Elliot and Jahi are currently working to put additional beers on the market, including a Black IPA, Red Ale, and Rye Porter. Stay tuned for these new beer releases, as well as upcoming events, by checking out Soul Mega's website and Instagram. And, as always, you can catch up on all the DC Beer Show episodes here, and subscribe to our weekly newsletter, the DC Beer Weekly Pour.
