Trevor Thompson joins Michael and Mark to discuss the extraordinary snow year in the west and the wild — once in a decade — skiing objectives that such a winter make possible. Specifically, the huge accumulation of snow made it possible to ski from the top of Mount Whitney (14,505'), which is the highest peak in the Lower 48, to the road, something like 8000 feet of elevation loss. That's a big ski run, preceded by a big climb. Midway into that we disappeared down a rabbit hole to discuss electric vehicles, and older cars or trucks one can maintain on his or her own instead of being hobbled entirely should anything go wrong with the electronics or computers in the most modern vehicles.Trevor nicely bridges from the concept of those who can't or won't learn what's necessary to maintain or diagnose or repair a vehicle to the topic of being hand-held through life, spoon-fed perhaps, where risk is interpreted or mitigated by an expert, where requisite knowledge and/or self-knowledge is rendered irrelevant and people are granted access to higher order experiences despite being unprepared or unable on their own.Success breeds ambition, and technological development, which has allowed some to shortcut education and experience, has opened up adventure possibilities for those who do have the requisite experience and ambition. So the question at some point must be, "What's next?" Well, some things are doable because they're doable, not because they're fun.Later Trevor and Mark talk about the "nerfing" of the mountain environment and its natural challenges, and the strange understanding that, "If I, a relatively inexperienced climber, is here, and can be here, then it must necessarily be safe ... ish." Transformative experience can only exist hand-in-hand with honest assessment and communication about that experience. Embellishment denies the experiencer access to the lessons that may have been available from that experience, that adventure.Jump in, the snow skis just fine.

Over the past few months, news organizations continue to uncover lies and embellishments about Representative George Santos' past, resume, and campaign finances. The Republican Representative of New York's 3rd Congressional District, which covers parts of Long Island and Queens, is now facing several investigations into those lies. The Freshman lawmaker was only sworn in a month ago, and is also facing calls from some lawmakers in his own party to step down. Many of his constituents are calling for his resignation. A recent Newsday/Siena College poll found that 78% of those surveyed in his district want Santos to resign. And on Tuesday, a busload of Santos's constituents rode down to D.C., protested on Capitol Hill, and handed his staff members a petition for his resignation. We look at what repercussions Santos could face in Congress and what rules are in place to prevent other lawmakers from lying to constituents with David Cruz, WNYC's People & Power politics editor.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Show (10/11/2022): 3:05pm- On Tuesday, the United States Supreme Court vacated a decision that required undated mail-in ballots be counted in Pennsylvania. The court's ruling is likely to result in a Republican-led lawsuit challenging the legality of Pennsylvania's current mail-in ballot policies, specifically the validity of undated ballots.    3:20pm- Rich rummages through an Audacy garbage bin after finding a news article sitting on top that he thought was interesting…did he find more potential show prep in the trash? Or did he only find germs and tetanus disease?   3:45pm- State Senator Doug Mastriano—Republican Candidate for Pennsylvania Governor—joins the show to discuss his campaign, a recent Trafalgar Poll that has him down 2-points and within the margin of error of Democrat candidate Josh Shapiro, and how rising crime rates in PA's big cities like Philadelphia could potentially sway the election in his favor.   4:05pm- Former Democrat Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard announced that she could no longer remain a member of the Democrat Party—citing the party's widespread embrace of “wokeness” and “racializing every issue.” Gabbard also objected to what she considers a pro-war mentality.    4:15pm- While speaking with CNBC, JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon explained that he believes a recession is likely to occur in the next six to nine months—stating that the Federal Reserve waited too long to raise interest rates. Dimon went on to implore the Biden Administration to drill domestically instead of relying on Saudi Arabia and OPEC+ for energy.    4:30pm- Justin Goodman—Senior Vice President for Advocacy & Public Policy at White Coat Waste Project—joins the show to talk about his organization's monitoring of medical testing on animals, particularly of the United States government which is the single largest funder of animal testing in the world. Goodman reveals that, according to investigations, Dr. Anthony Fauci and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) distributed tax dollars to EcoHealth Alliance which performed gain-of-function coronavirus research involving bats at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Astoundingly, the Wuhan Institute of Virology remains eligible to receive U.S. tax dollars for gain-of-function research.   4:50pm- While speaking at the 2020 Advancing Excellence in Transgender Health (AETH), Dr. Jeremi Carswel—the director of the hospital's Gender Multi-Specialty Service at Boston Children's Hospital—revealed that doctors are handing out puberty blockers to young children like “candy.” Although an advocate for gender reassignment procedures, she conceded that she was sometimes worried that “in this field” it can be “dangerous” how easily doctors are “swayed” by their patients. Audio from the conference was recently unearthed by Breitbart.    5:05pm- On Monday, the New York Times published a piece titled, “Biden, Storyteller in Chief, Spins Yarns That Often Unravel,” in which they documented President Biden's habit of “embellishing” his stories. Rich relives some of Biden's greatest lies.    5:25pm- In Washington Post Magazine, reporter David Montgomery examined what might happen if Donald Trump was to become U.S. President again in 2024. Predictably, Montgomery layouts a dystopian vision—often hysterically exaggerated.    5:40pm- What's on Matt's Cut Sheet: JD Vance obliterates Tim Ryan during Monday night's debate, Jen Psaki avoids questions while on Meet the Press, Kamala Harris rambles on late night, and Greta Thunberg is back…but is she less woke?!   6:05pm- Last week, President Joe Biden spoke at a Volvo factory in Hagerstown, Maryland and addressed domestic manufacturing and the economy. During his speech, Biden accused Republicans of hoping for an economic downturn and blamed the financial struggles of the middle class on “trickle down” economic theory endorsed by the political right. But as Stanford Professor & Economist Thomas Sowell points out, “trickle down” is not a legitimate economic theory nor has anyone (economist or politician) ever advocated for it. “Trickle down” has simply morphed into a derogatory term for lowering taxes—which, according to data, has historically resulted in more revenue collected by the federal government with wealthy Americans paying a larger percentage of overall tax revenue. In “Trickle Down Theory and Tax Cuts for the Rich,” Sowell writes, “[t]he facts are unmistakably plain, for those who bother to check the facts. In 1921, when the tax rate on people making over $100,000 a year was 73 percent, the federal government collected a little over $700 million in income taxes, of which 30 percent was paid by those making over $100,000. By 1929, after a series of tax rate reductions had cut the tax rate to 24 percent on those making over $100,000, the federal government collected more than a billion dollars in income taxes, of which 65 percent was collected from those making over $100,000.”   6:40pm- Daniel Turner—Founder & Executive Director of Power the Future—joins the show to discuss OPCE+ announcing it will reduce oil production by 2 million barrels per-day and the Biden Administration's subsequent decision to potentially ease sanctions on Venezuela with the intention of ultimately importing more oil. Turner explains that American oil production is significantly “cleaner” than production in countries like Venezuela or Iran.
