It's been a minute since we were joined by Tom King on the show. If you checked the length of this episode then you know we had a LOT to catch up on. Between the last interview and now, Tom has been pretty busy making comics. Not only has he had all of his work at DC but is back to the creator owned world as well. This week we continue our pride books with Taproot. Blue is having a hard time moving on. He’s in love with his best friend. He’s also dead. Luckily, Hamal can see ghosts, leaving Blue free to haunt him to his heart’s content. But something eerie is happening in town, leaving the local afterlife unsettled, and when Blue realizes Hamal’s strange ability may be putting him in danger, Blue has to find a way to protect him, even if it means… leaving him. Next week we finish our pride books with a cross over episode with Cinema Queens.  We are reading Life with Kevin. Kevin Keller returns in this new collection by Dan Parent and J. Bone! Kevin's made his big move to the Big Apple, and Veronica Lodge is not far behind! To succeed in New York, he's going to have to learn how to make time for dating while juggling a high-pressure journalism gig. Then! Jennifer Hayden stops by our table at Camden to talk about her graphic novel “The Story of My Tits,” which deals with her experience with breast cancer. Then! We go back to Dewey’s to talk to Alexia Veldhuisen, whose Kickstarter comic, “47 Furious Tails,” an all-animal retelling of the 47 Ronin, has dropped digitally for backers. And finally! We chat briefly with Archie Comics legend Dan Parent about his upcoming “Archie: The Married Life 10th Anniversary” series with Michael Uslan.

This week, longtime Archie Comics illustrator Fernando Ruiz joins the show to talk about his current Kickstarter project, "The Haunted Cowboy," his "Die, Kitty, Die" series with fellow Archie alumnus Dan Parent, teaching at the Kubert School and being the first artist in Matt Lazorwitz's Batman sketchbook. We also play news roundup after a fruitful C2E2, and Dan makes his feelings known about the Hickman announcement and the current crop of X-Men writers.

Bryce is joined by librarian Carla Iacchelli and the official "comics correspondent of Overdue Finds" Amie Wright as they explore everything Archie and the entire Riverdale universe. They look at how the series has changed since it was first introduced in 1941 to include everything from comics and TV shows to some crazy crossovers. Carla and Amie share why Riverdale is a guilty pleasure must watch and Bryce shares a comics storyline where Archie picks up a rather controversial part-time job. Jason Bone was comics' golden boy following his very first professional work. The Toronto artist was nominated for an Eisner Award (work deserving of wider recognition) in 2001 for his first comic Solar Stella. His very next project Alison Dare (with past Speech Bubble guest J. Torres) was also Eisner-nominated. Both works drew the attention of the late, legendary Canadian comic artist Darwyn Cooke (DC: The New Frontier, Catwoman) who took J under his wing as his inker until Cooke's death from cancer in 2016.J. spends much of this episode reminiscing about what it was like to work with Darwyn and the other famous comic pros he has worked with in the past, including Paul Dini (Batman the Animated Series) and Mike Allred (Madman, X-Statix). We then get into why the idyllic pop culture of the 50s and 60s influences his art style and dissect the clandestine gayness of the era. This week, Josh checks in from the floor of the Ottawa Comic Con with an interview with Archie Comics legend Dan Parent! At the Westin in New York City, Dennis meets up with artist and writer Dan Parent who has been working for "Archie" comics for over three decades. He talks about getting discovered by "Archie" while still in school, why he connects with Jughead, the challenge of adding his own style to Archie while keeping things consistent, how he comes up with fresh storylines and of course, the Betty and Veronica of it all. Dan also talks about creating and adding the gay character of Kevin to the Riverdale mix in 2010, the pop star who inspired Kevin's look, introducing Kevin with a Three's Company-esque comedic storyline as opposed to something Afterschool Special-y and the reaction he's gotten from fans. He also discusses the effect the TV show Riverdale has had on the comic and the time he got to visit the set of the show and meet the disgustingly good-looking cast. He also talks about his sidehustle comic Die Kitty Die, raising the money for it on Kickstarter, the famous curvy redhead who inspired Kitty's look and finding a place to put Bea Arthur into the story. This past weekend Derek headed to the Wizard World Austin Comic Con, and there he was able to interview several creators and publishers populating the con's Artist Alley. His guests included Brandon Seifert, the writer of Witch Doctor; Peyton Freeman and Brett Williams, the creators of the new comic The Box; Jason “Java” Croft, the publisher of Bachelor Pad Magazine; Dan Parent, renowned artist at Archie Comics; Austin and Adam Tinius, the creative force behind Bogus Books; Jamie Kinosian, author of the webcomic Gods in New York; Russ Manning Award winner Kevin Maguire; the general manager of Zenescope, Jennifer Bermel; and Jason Bienven, the creator behind the successful Kickstarter campaign, The Kingdom. These are fun and informative interviews, the kind of thing one hopes for when attending a con.
