& 7. September in Nottwil

What if the physical discomfort of creating could be significantly reduced through simple awareness and intentional adjustments to how we work? Elizabeth Schlatter, creator of The Aligned Potter, draws on her experience to show how small changes—from joint inventory checks between tasks to understanding your unique body mechanics—can transform your making practice. Taking care of our bodies isn't just about preventing pain, but about creating a sustainable practice that allows us all to keep making what we love for decades to come.Want to continue chatting with Elizabeth directly? Dr. Andreas Schlatter is a classically trained physicist (EPFL, Princeton) with a decidedly heretical approach to physics. Though deeply mathematical in his approach, he dispenses with the purely field-based approach to understanding the building blocks of nature, and asks far deeper question about what the mathematics is telling us about the hidden structures of nature. Rather than take the positivist approach, which suggests that anything that cannot be experimentally encountered is not worth considering, Schlatter follows in the tradition of Gödel and the other mid 20th century logicians, who believed that a layer of the universe beyond the visible is available to us if we can reason our way to it. By following this path, Schlatter has reached the conclusion that the only viable interpretation of quantum mechanics is the transactional one. Unlike the other transnational theorists we've had on the show, Schlatter has gone one step further to propose that there is a transactional interpretation of gravity just as is there is for quantum mechanics. He calls it entropic gravity, and in this episode we explore the convoluted path he took to physics, how he found the transactionalists, and how he and Ruth Kastner formulated an entropic explanation for spacetime. On this bonus episode of Everything Fab Four, we trace two television icons from the 1970s—both very different in terms of target audience, but united in the inspiration that they drew from the Beatles. First is the New Zoo Revue, the children's TV show that was broadcast from 1972 through 1977. Designed as a musical comedy, it ran for 196 episodes and imparting valuable life lessons to the program's legions of child viewers. The show was hosted by husband and wife duo Doug and Emmy Jo. On the New Zoo Revue, they interacted with an array of loveable costumed characters, including Henrietta Hippo and Freddie the Frog. At the other end of the TV demographic spectrum is George Schlatter, the founder of network television's groundbreaking Laugh-In. The hilarious sketch comedy program ran for more than 140 episodes between 1968 and 1973. With Dan Rowan and Dick Martin as Schlatter's irreverent hosts, Laugh-In thrived on its moveable feast of guest stars, including the likes of Jack Benny, Johnny Carson, Sammy Davis, Jr., Phyllis Diller and more. Laugh-In also launched the careers of series regulars Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin. Last year, Schlatter released his memoir, Still Laughing: A Life in Comedy. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support

Already a well-regarded producer of television specials and variety shows by 1967, George Schlatter pitched to NBC an idea that was a radical departure: a comedy special inspired by the hippie counter-culture, one which would take the idea of sit-ins, love-ins, and be-ins, and manifest that politicized, sexualized, consciousness-raising energy into comedic sketches. The special, Laugh-in, was so successful it became a regular television series, running from January 1968 to March 1973 and eventually becoming the #1 show on TV.Schlatter new book, "Still Laughing," features never-before-told backstories from the creation of one of the most beloved shows in television history.

George Schlatter: The visionary maestro who shook up television with "Laugh-In," crafting a kaleidoscope of laughter, counterculture charm, and unapologetic satire, forever imprinting his comedic genius on the annals of entertainment history joins us on Dystopia Tonight for an unforgettable interview. A masterful director, George Schlatter's creative genius has imprinted an indelible mark on both the silver and small screens. It was his groundbreaking work on the irreverent sketch show "Laugh-In" that catapulted him to legendary status, shaking up the status quo and fearlessly pushing boundaries throughout the politically charged '60s and '70s. During this episode, Schlatter mesmerized listeners with captivating tales of his collaborations with comedy icons. He fondly reminisced about discovering the infectious energy of Goldie Hawn, the character building brilliance of Lilly Tomlin, and the unruly genius of George Carlin. He shared stories of working with Robin Williams, who effortlessly merged comedy and pathos, and the puppeteering genius of Jim Henson, whose characters brought joy to audiences of all ages. But Schlatter's influence extended beyond the realm of comedy. He spoke fondly of the late John Denver, recounting their collaborations that blended music and humor, and he even shared anecdotes about the Chairman of the Board himself, Frank Sinatra, whose comedic timing surprised and delighted both Schlatter and audiences alike. We also discussed the realm of contemporary comedy, as Schlatter offered his thoughts on the current TV and Movie landscapes, and comics who are currently at the top of their games like Dave Chappelle, acknowledging the impact of his fearless and thought-provoking brand of humor while lamenting the fact that not all of it appears to be comedy to him. From the vibrant chaos of "Laugh-In" to his collaborations with the most revered names in the industry, Schlatter's legacy is one of innovation, fearlessness, and unbridled creativity. His work has paved the way for future generations of comedians, inspiring them to challenge norms, question authority, and elicit laughter from the depths of the human experience. George Schlatter, a maverick director who forever changed the landscape of comedy.
