In perhaps the spermiest film we've ever covered, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley hang out with a baby voiced by Bruce Willis and Amy Heckerling gets revenge on Harold Ramis. As David Sims says early in this episode - Look Who's Talking is a VERY RICH text. Vanity Fair's Hillary Busis joins us to talk about this 1989 “forgotbuster,” a film that made a bozo amount of money and dared to ask the question, “What if baby talked??” We're going deep on Travolta lore, grappling with Kirstie Alley's later career, and following numerous tangents on everything from the rules of the Rugrats universe to advancements in crib safety. Blamison made it back just in the nick of time to maintain the efficacy of their typical intro of "once or twice a month"! On this episode we play thought games with the 1996 comedic fable Multiplicity starring Michael Keaton and Andie McDowell and directed by Harold Ramis. But let's be honest, we hadn't talked in about a month, so most of this episode is just babbling.Other things talked about: Blake's mustache, his upcoming breakout talk at the NYC Mockingbird conference, and Jamison's trip to Japan.Clip: The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack

Dana and Tom with returning guest, Joe Boukhari (Instagram - I'll Get to It When I Get to It; Letterboxd Film Commentator - @bagodonuts) revisit Caddyshack (1980): written and directed by Harold Ramis with Douglas Kenney and Brian Doyle Murray, music by Johnny Mandel, cinematography by Stevan Larner, starring Chevy Chase, Ted Knight, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray.Plot Summary: Bushwood Country Club: an opulent haven for the wealthy, where life revolves around pristine greens, exclusivity, and egos so inflated they could double as golf carts. But underneath the facade of luxury lies a clash of worlds—working-class caddies and eccentric groundskeepers versus snobby elites—and it's about to get hilariously out of control.Danny Noonan (Michael O'Keefe), a young caddy striving to secure his future, finds himself entangled in the club's tangled hierarchy, navigating manipulative judges, raucous millionaires, and life lessons from Ty Webb (Chevy Chase), a laid-back golfer with pearls of wisdom that sound like they came from a Zen koan written by Groucho Marx. Meanwhile, Carl Spackler (Bill Murray), the quirky groundskeeper, engages in an escalating war with a gopher so cunning it could win a philosophy debate.Add in Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield), whose outlandish behavior becomes a catalyst for chaos, and Bushwood transforms into the backdrop for a wild satire of class division, absurd ambition, and the universal search for meaning—through golf, naturally. The result? A comedy that skewers pretense and celebrates the unpredictability of life, all while leaving the audience wondering how a gopher became the most unstoppable force in the universe.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome Back, Joe Boukhari02:42 Cast and Background for Caddyshack06:19 Relationship(s) with Caddyshack09:12 What is Caddyshack About?13:54 Status of Comedy in Film24:48 Plot Summary for Caddyshack26:36 Did You Know?28:29 First Break29:26 What's Up with Joe Boukhari?32:02 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy45:03 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance50:33 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty57:52 Second Break58:33 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:04:54 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:09:27 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:11:28 Remaining Questions for Caddyshack01:14:44 Thank You to Joe Boukhari and Remaining Thoughts01:18:17 CreditsGuest:Joe BoukhariInstagram - I'll Get to It When I Get to ItLetterboxd Film Commentator - @bagodonutsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the original episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/caddyshack-1980For more on the episode, go to:
Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast this Earth Day, we are talking to journalist Michael Simmons, son of National Lampoon co-founder & film producer Matt Simmons. We loved talking to Michael because there is so much history in the (almost) forgotten history of American humor magazine turned pop culture juggernaut, National Lampoon. Michael gives us behind the scenes stories about the fabled National Lampoon editorial offices in Manhattan circa 1974 which was a breeding ground for comedy and specifically Saturday Night Live writers and performers. We discuss National Lampoon stage shows with Chevy Chase, Harold Ramis, John Belushi & Gilda Radner that Michael was road manager when it hit the road. We hear about his dad's strange history as one of the founders the first credit card company, Diner's Club in the 1950s & how it led to National Lampoon. We even get into the history of how National Lampoon came into existence, birthed out of the Harvard Lampoon and even before that. Michael gives us a firsthand account of what it was like being in the offices of National Lampoon before and after films like National Lampoon's Animal House & National Lampoon's Vacation launched the brand mainstream. What's more we hear stories about Harold Ramis got nervous flyer Gilda Radner on a plane she didn't want to get on, Wilt Chamberlain giving him a ride on his shoulders and how he became an award winning journalist in Los Angeles writing about vice squad busts and later, music journalism. So sit back and take a listen to a fascinating story about how National Lampoon begat everything from Second City and This is Spinal Tap to SCTV and The Credibility Gap. It's all here on the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen.
OK, with golf season fully underway, it's time to salute Caddyshack, one of the classic 1980s comedy that featured the directorial debut of Harold Ramis, the big screen breakthrough for Rodney Dangerfield, some arrogant Ted Knight, some crazed Bill Murray and a lineage that drew heavily from both Saturday Night Live and the National Lampoon. Don't worry too much about the plot -- it's merely a launchpad for comedy bits galore. Whether you're a hacker, a duffer, or a scratch golfer, Caddyshack has something for you. And if you are a real big fan, you can watch it wearing your "William Murray" golf gear and finish with a pint at the "Murray Brothers Caddyshack Restaurant" (yes it's real). As always, find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Caddyshack? Bill Murray has had far larger roles over time, but he makes the most of his Caddyshack persona Carl Spackler, a groundskeeper who is just a little, shall we say, disturbed. https://youtu.be/X48G7Y0VWW4?si=QGiCSvUEMJQYbGRo Chevy Chase has never been better than as Ty Webb, a pro-level golfer who smirks his way through life. Here are some of Chevy's best bits. https://youtu.be/Al3Yt5gxExY?si=CwIlxkEJFpXJIbTG Rodney Dangerfield was the perfect choice to play Al Czervik, a loud, crass, and hilarious "slob" dropped in the middle of a bunch of country club "snobs". Here Al tries to goad the arrogant Judge Smalls (a brilliant Ted Knight) into a slice. https://youtu.be/RrOhjHC28PQ?si=MFzVjclP0mKa6fxi

In 1978, after Harold Ramis wrapped "Animal House", the director teamed up with pals Brian Doyle-Murray and Douglas Kenney, along with Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Ted Knight, and the one and only, Rodney Dangerfield, to bring similar frathouse shenanigans to the clubhouse. Featuring legendary performances (many of which were completely improvised) plus an equally memorable soundtrack, this 80s flick came barreling into theaters the summer of 1980, and went on to become one of the most cherished comedies of all time. Widely considered to be one of the all-time funniest comedies ever assembled, the film about a young golf caddy (Michael O'Keefe) desperate to win a scholarship and turn his life around has been listed #71 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Laughs and #7 on AFI's Top 10 Sports Films. So grab your golf clubs, watch out for gopher holes, and remember to be the ball as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts, Nicolas Pepin and Chris McMichen discuss “Caddyshack” from 1980 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode:Cindy Morgan revealed that the oil massage scene with Chevy Chase was entirely improvised. When Lacy exclaims, "You're crazy!" that was Morgan's authentic reaction to Chase dousing her with oil, which was also the case with Chase's reply, "That's what they said about the Son Of Sam.”Writer and producer Douglas Kenney died after the film was released. He fell off a cliff while vacationing in Hawaii. Kenney had experienced deep depression after the film's post-production, as much of the original story had been significantly altered in the editing room, and he was strongly opposed to the final addition of the gopher to the film.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDB, Box Office Mojohttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/56693/15-things-you-might-not-know-about-caddyshackhttps://screenrant.com/caddyshack-movie-behind-scenes-making-of-trivia/Some sections were composed or edited by ChatGPT We'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! SNL celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025 but we didn't start watching it until the 1990s. As Canadian kids with bedtimes in the 80s, we had more exposure to SCTV, the incredible sketch comedy show that featured an outrageously talented cast from Second City. Andrea Martin, Catherine O'Hara, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, John Candy and Harold Ramis and later Rick Moranis and Martin Short on one show! In this episode, we reminisce with our good friend, Marcus J, and revisit our favourite movies featuring SCTV alumni. It's a beauty, eh!

Get ready for a cloning catastrophe like no other! In this episode of No More Late Fees, we're celebrating Jackie's birthday with the 1996 sci-fi comedy Multiplicity! Danielle takes out the burn book on Doug's questionable choices, while Jackie defends her childhood favorite with love and laughter. Who you gonna call? The Ghostbusters series has had its ups and downs since the iconic 1984 original, with each sequel bringing something new to the table—some loved, some controversial. Send us a textKatie and Bridget deal with six more weeks of winter as they re-watch the movie: Groundhog Day! That's right! There's apparently no apostrophe "s" when you say that title! We're confused by it too! Come along as we meet Phil, a cranky weatherman who gets stuck in a literal hell hole of reliving the same day over and over again, where he remembers its repeating but nobody else does. It sounds like it should be a horror movie (which it kind of is), but also it's really deep and moving and philosophical and funny and, and, and... Listen there's a lot of days happening here so ya kinda get all the emotions okay!? This movie brings fourth lots of deep questions such as: How long do groundhogs live for? Why is the groundhog put into air jail instead of actually getting to potentially see his shadow? WHERE is the groundhog's paternity leave!? ...Alright fine maybe this movie just really brought fourth a lot of questions about GROUNDHOGS! Released in 1993 (the best year for movies), it was written and directed by Harold Ramis and stars Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, as well as every character actor ever.
Club Paradise begins in Chicago Illinois where a retired firefighter played by Robin Williams takes his insurance money and opens a resort at a tropical island. Directed by Harold Ramis, this movie could've been another lampoon-esque classic but instead gets too busy with various themes and subplots muddy up the films cohesiveness. Rick Moranis and Eugene Levy are both funny in this.

What can we say that you don't know already about the movie Groundhog Day? As it turns out...plenty, but mostly because it amused us to do so. IT'S GROUNDHOGS DAY! Groundhogs Day is an American tradition where a rodent decides the weather. Very similarly to how our country is run, a rodent sticks its head outside and the future is decided upon the sudden verdict. [School of Movies 2025] We've been holding this episode back for a special occasion and it seems like 2025 'The year of Joy' is the time to finally crack into one of the richest and most universally gratifying films in history. A hundred years from now, people will still be watching this film, It's a Wonderful Life and The Shawshank Redemption. Accompanying us in this time loop journey from mundane resentment to confusion, to panic, to exploitation, to emptiness, to the nadir of self-destruction, to the revelation of reflection, to the zenith of living to enrich the lives of others, and thus experience repletion is Jesse Ferguson. Jesse is one of the few guests we know who can comprehend the knottiest of time-travel conundrums whilst fully understanding that the story at the heart of what's being told is far more important than any speculative, temporal shenanigans. Plus Bill Murray is a hoot, this is his best film, as well as being the finest offering from his friend and director Harold Ramis. It is endlessly memorable, profound, and touches upon a universality of shared experience. We are all alone, and we are all together.
Diane Keaton accidentally inherits a baby. Hilarity ensues. Actually, this isn't your typical “I don't know how to change a diaper!” comedy, it's actually a pretty sweet and incisive look at the demented work culture of the 1980s. Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast, where each week we pull some movies off the shelf and recommend a few you might want to watch. This week's theme is sports comedies, specifically some great ones from the '80s that still hold up. If you're in the mood for underdogs, quirky characters, and a lot of laughs, these films should hit the spot. The Best of Times (1986)This one often flies under the radar, but it shouldn't. Starring Robin Williams and Kurt Russell, it's a heartfelt comedy about reliving past mistakes and trying to rewrite history on a small-town football field. Williams plays a guy still hung up on a dropped pass from years ago, and Russell is the former star quarterback who gets roped into a plan to replay the game. Directed by Roger Spottiswoode, the movie balances humor with some surprisingly emotional moments. Major League (1989)A classic baseball comedy about a ragtag Cleveland Indians team that's supposed to fail but manages to surprise everyone. Charlie Sheen stars as “Wild Thing” Rick Vaughn, a pitcher with a blazing fastball and no control, alongside a great ensemble cast including Tom Berenger, Wesley Snipes, and Rene Russo. Directed by David S. Ward, the film has a sharp sense of humor but also doesn't shy away from celebrating the game itself. The film was so beloved it sparked two sequels, though neither quite captured the charm of the original.Caddyshack (1980)What's a sports comedy list without Caddyshack? Directed by Harold Ramis, this movie redefined the genre with its irreverent humor and unforgettable cast, including Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray. Set at a country club golf course, it's less about the game and more about the absurd characters and their crazy antics. One of my favorite characters, the gopher puppet, was added late in production and ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the film. If you haven't seen it or haven't watched it in a while, it's always worth revisiting.Wildcats (1986)Goldie Hawn leads this football comedy as Molly McGrath, a high school track coach who takes on the challenge of coaching a boys' varsity football team in a rough neighborhood. The film has a lot of charm, mostly thanks to Hawn's performance, which balances humor with just enough seriousness to make you root for her and the team. It's also an early film for Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, who both went on to major careers. This was a great cable TV comedy and I watched it dozen of time on HBO and still bought in on VHS.That's the lineup for this week: The Best of Times, Major League, Caddyshack, and Wildcats. Each one brings something a little different to the table, but they all share a love for sports and comedy. Let me know what you think, and if there's a movie you'd like me us recommend, leave us a comment. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. This week's pick is the turn of one of our longest supporters, Kent! And he's chosen THE road trip movie that spawned a franchise and influenced all that came after. It's the 1983 black comedy, National Lampoon's Vacation! The movie began as an adaptation of John Hughes's short story, “Vacation '58,” published in National Lampoon magazine. The screenplay was penned by Hughes himself, marking one of his early ventures into Hollywood comedy. Directed by Harold Ramis, the film starred Chevy Chase as the hapless family patriarch, Clark Griswold. Chase's improvisational comedy style helped shape the film's humor, with Beverly D'Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, and Dana Barron rounding out the Griswold family. The road trip concept, centered on the Griswold family's disastrous journey to the fictional Wally World amusement park, resonated with audiences, blending slapstick humor with relatable family dynamics. Principal photography took place across various U.S. locations, including Arizona, California, Colorado, and Missouri, to capture the authentic feel of a cross-country road trip. Notable challenges included shooting in sweltering heat during desert scenes and the logistical complexities of filming with a live moose at the park. The film also saw some creative last-minute changes, such as altering the original ending (where Wally World was closed indefinitely) after test audiences found it too dark. The film's mix of irreverent comedy, Hughes's sharp writing, and Ramis's deft direction made it a critical and commercial success. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: Clark Griswold is an overenthusiastic father, determined to take his family on the ultimate cross-country road trip to the Wally World amusement park. Along the way, Clark, his wife Ellen, and their children, Rusty and Audrey, face a series of increasingly absurd and catastrophic setbacks, including a car breakdown, disastrous stays with relatives, a flirtation with a mysterious woman in a Ferrari, and the tragic demise of their aunt's dog. Despite the chaos, Clark's relentless optimism drives the family to press on, culminating in a hilariously chaotic finale at Wally World that underscores the unpredictable and often hilarious nature of family vacations. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

First, we will talk about Bedazzled, a remake of the Dudley Moore comedy and directed by Harold Ramis. Next, we will talk about Little Nicky, starring Adam Sandler. Is it a Christmas movie? In our biggest episode to date, Mike, Brian, and Stephen strap on the proton backs and try not to cross the streams as we take on the mother of all 80s comedies: GHOSTBUSTERS. Something this funny, this quitable and this memorable could only come from a group that defined comedy in the 70s and 80s, and there's nothing like watching Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Dan Akroyd just hang out and do there thing. We talk about the trials and tribulations it took to bring this film to life, as nothing like it had existed before. We discuss its place in the pantheon of 80s movies and wonder where this kind of family friendly movie went. We talk about the gags and ghosts, from Stay-Puft, to Rick Moranis' loveable loser Louis, to a theme song you just couldn't get out of your head, and everything in between. Most of all, we answer the age old question, "Does bustin' make you feel good?" If you like what you're listening to make sure to subscribe wherever you get your podcast feeds. On February 24, 2014, Harold Ramis — the comedic genius who shaped some of the most iconic films in American cinema—passed away from complications of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis at the age of 69. With his uniquely dry wit and unforgettable charm, Ramis left an indelible mark on Hollywood, not only as a writer and director but as an actor who brought beloved characters to life. The original Ghostbusters (1984) is a timeless comedy that perfectly balances humor, adventure, and supernatural elements. The story follows a group of eccentric scientists who turn to ghost-catching after losing their academic jobs. As they face off against otherworldly threats haunting New York City, they discover an impending catastrophe that only they can prevent. What makes the first Ghostbusters so iconic—and why sequels have struggled to recapture its magic—is the incredible chemistry between the cast. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson bring a sense of natural camaraderie and wit that feels both genuine and endlessly entertaining. Their distinct personalities blend together, creating a team dynamic that grounds the supernatural storyline and makes it relatable. The movie's impact goes beyond its cast. The music, including Ray Parker Jr.'s unforgettable theme song, amplifies the film's energy, setting the tone for a story that's both spooky and fun. And then there's New York City itself. The film captures the grit, character, and charm of 1980s NYC, transforming the city into a character all its own. Every street corner, landmark, and ghostly encounter pulls audiences into a lively, supernatural New York that's thrilling to watch. While recent sequels have added new technology, characters, and modern humor, they've been unable to replicate the authentic charm and effortless humor of the original. The first Ghostbusters stands out as a true classic, seamlessly blending horror, comedy, and adventure in a way that feels fresh, funny, and utterly unique.Stick around until the end of the discussion and join us for a round of Movie 20 Questions.Who you gonna call? This week, we're talking about GHOSTBUSTERS— the classic comedy horror movie that stays enjoyable while also not really being about anything. We'll break down its themes, explore deeper meanings behind the scenes, and discuss character motivations. Plus, we'll talk a little sh*t. GHOSTBUSTERS is about: After the members of a team of scientists (Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray) lose their cushy positions at a university in New York City, they decide to become "ghostbusters" to wage a high-tech battle with the supernatural for money. They stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, a doorway that will release evil upon the city. The Ghostbusters must now save New York from complete destruction.

Welcome to Professor Juskow's 1981 in film. This episode's class will cover all the action of the year 1981. We're talking about An American Werewolf in London and how it changed make-up in motion pictures forever; Stripes - which would set up the pairing of Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray for the blockbuster Ghostbusters; the little known Looker - written and directed by Jurassic Park author Michael Creighton and way ahead of it's time with talk of AI and how it would effect the future; Oliver Stone's first written and directed film with Michael Caine called The Hand; and of course, most importantly Chariots of Eggs - the SCTV version of the awful Chariots of Fire starring Hall & Oates - I mean COME ON!
Who you gonna call? It's hard to understate just how large of an impression this movie made on the kids who grew up in the 1980s (and 90s). This movie felt like it was EVERYONE'S favorite movie. Deadpanned Bill Murray, nerdy Harold Ramis, golden retriever Dan Akroyd, skeptical/wtf Ernie Banks, goofy Slimer, possessed Sigourney Weaver, that-neighbor Rick Moranis...it's alchemy. One of those films that captured magic. We're watching it!
