This one makes me a little uncomfortable. For someone who talks as much as me, it's weird, but I don't like to hear myself talk so much. In this episode, 2/3 of my Chief Ladiga 100 crew, and dear friends, Jamie Saunders and Tina Wolfe interview me for a recap of my last race. If you don't like to hear me talk about me, I am perfectly ok if you pass this one by. The interviewers do a fine job. The guest is a little boring. Maybe it will keep you company in some late miles at Bronze Dragonfly or another race. Terri Swanson has completed many marathons, but until recently, never really considered a 100 mile ultra. That is, until she was challenged by the legend, Bob Becker, and she accepted. Terri took on the Daytona 100 ultra. She had an awesome crew, although she didn't know them very well, and she got it done. Join me for a nice chat with fairly new ultrarunner Sam Atherton from Nashville. Back on January 20th, less than a year after his first ultra he toed the line at "The Conquer" which proclaimed by it's RD's as "America's Toughest Ultra". There was a $10,000 cash prize and let's just say he conquered. Sam is a passionate guy about running community and training, so he was a treat to talk to. "His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one." This is a line from The Great Gatsby. It was also an answer to one of the many questions I asked Patrick. As I told him in the interview, I can't believe I have waited this long to have him as a guest. He's a teacher of 27 years, a "retired" very accomplished ultra runner and coach, and he weaves great motivational sayings and literary quotes throughout his conversation. This makes for a really enjoyable and educational chat. While this is the final installment of my series on backyard ultras, we spend probably less than half the time discussing them. Patrick won the Death at Dupuis a few years ago and at the time his performance put him in a position to represent at Big's Backyard. So, we do discuss those experiences among many other races. We cover his 2 races that he directs, which are Gate 2 Gate and Last of the Felascans and he also shares some great tips for flatlanders looking to do well in mountain races. Part 4 of the Backyard Ultra series features a chat with Jennifer Russo. At 57, Jennifer broke Courtney Dauwalter's backyard mileage female world record last year at Capitol Backyard Ultra getting the assist and earning a ticket to Big's. Episode 75 is a little different from my normal routine. In this one, I ask coach Ryan Padilla of Metpro, who happens to be my nutrition coach, to come on and discuss how Metpro uses their vast experience in metabolic profiling to build custom nutrition plans for their clients to help achieve different goals. My goal was to lose excess weight to lower my impact running and improve performance. They help others that aren't looking to lose weight, just increase muscle, strength, and improve performance. They can do all 3. Ryan talks about how that works and gives many tips on pre-race fueling, in race fueling, and fueling for training. I have lost over 20 pounds with Ryan's help, but more than that, I have learned a lifestyle of eating smarter and looking at food as another tool to help me get closer to my goals. Episode 71 features my conversation with Kelly Odell. She is the first guest that I've had on the show that actually lives with a previous guest. She's also the first guest on the show that would probably not win a 100 mile race against every other inhabitant of her home and especially a backyard format. LOL. With all that said, though, Kelly is quite the accomplished ultra-runner in her own right. She's finished Badwater 135 and several other 100 milers including a sub 24 hour. One of the reasons I invited her on the show was for a DNF though. She has an interesting DNF story for sure. It's our 5th Anniversary this month. As part of the celebration, we will post flashback episodes all month long to celebrate and say thank you. If it were not for you, our Runcation Nation community, we would not have had this show for the last five years, had some of the most amazing experiences, and created lasting friendships in this community. Next up is our very first BIG interview on the show and the first time we talked with Olympian and America's Coach, Jeff Galloway. Welcome back to Run Eat Drink Podcast! In this episode, I want to share the method I use for races of all distances. I discovered his method in January 2011, when I ran my first half marathon at Walt Disney World. I was an inexperienced runner who found a book online with a running schedule, tried to follow it, and headed to the race. Mistakes were made. I would describe that experience as painful and a real struggle, although I crossed the finish line with my husband and accomplished the goal. At the race expo, Jeff gave a motivational talk about his method. He talked about taking walk breaks so you can finish strong. Those walk breaks are short, 30 seconds or less, and protect you from running out of gas at the end of the race. He said it does not matter whether you are trying to qualify for Boston or complete your first race. You can use this method to pass others at the end, finish with a smile, and still have the energy to celebrate afterward. When we got home and started to train for our next race, his words were in the back of my mind. I researched and found that he had a whole program and that there was "an app for that" from LoloFit. It gives you a training plan based on your goal and a recommended ratio for running and walking. Jeff's voice tells you when to run and when to walk and drops in occasionally with motivation and encouragement to keep going during the workouts. I cannot tell you what a difference it made in training, motivation, and performance. I became one of his e-coach clients and have been an avid supporter ever since! On Sunday, August 6th, 2017, America's Coach and Olympian Jeff Galloway hosted a 3-hour running school in Orlando, Florida, at the Track Shack. This gave me an excellent opportunity to share what his method is all about and why it works. It was such a great experience, and afterward, we sampled some tasty food and beverages right around the corner at Santiago's Bodega. Jeff took the time to do an interview with us, and he gave us so much great information, so we are breaking up his interview into three separate podcast episodes. This is the first part of his chat with us. Jeff talks about the history of the run-walk-run method and how he became "America's Coach." In part two, we will explore the science behind the technique, and in the final part of his interview with us, Jeff shares resources for anyone who wants to use his run-walk-run method. Special thanks to the Orlando Track Shack, Jeff Galloway, and Santiago's Bodega for allowing us to film this episode. Chris Twiggs is the Chief Training Officer & National Program Director at Jeff Galloway Productions. He has the inside track on the magic of Walt Disney Word races, and has run every Disney marathon himself since its start. He also knows the Galloway method top to bottom, as he has used it in every marathon since his first one! And countless other races, including 100 mile ultra marathons. In this episode, we discuss all things pacing, and specifically why it is so important in distance running, but especially by reflecting on this past week at the WDW Marathon Weekend and Galloway training/groups. Run-walk-run adjusts to one's desired speed using walk:run ratios to fit any pace/goal, and has a nation-wide support network of training groups for support. I had the honor of pacing the 4 hour Galloway marathon group this year, and it was one of the best experiences in my 20+ year running career; the positivity and spirit among the runners was palpable the entire way, as we supported and cheered on one another. Notably, Jeff Galloway's son Westin Galloway also ran a sub-3 hour marathon using only Galloway training plan and run-walk-run method throughout this past weekend! Chris also offers individualized training plans to those who do not have a local Galloway running club to lean on. I speak with Jeff Galloway, a running legend, Olympian, author, speaker, and founder of the Galloway Run Walk Run method. He founded the first running specialty store known, participated in the 1972 Olympic Games, and is the author of two dozen books. We talk about his early days, the terrorist attack at the Munich Olympics, and how he created his famous Run Walk Run training methodology which has helped millions of runners.
Jeff Galloway is a world-class athlete and world-famous running coach. In part 3, we cover how Jeff has helped over 300,000 runners achieve their goals of running a marathon race and the science behind his legendary Run-Walk-Run method. As a member of the 1972 Olympic team, Jeff competed against the world's best athletes in Europe, Africa, and the former Soviet Union. He broke the U.S. 10-mile record (47:49) in 1973 and has a six-mile best of 27:21. Among his victories are the Peachtree Road Race, Honolulu Marathon, and Atlanta Marathon. He has also been a top-place finisher in many prominent U.S. races such as the Boston Marathon. Jeff is also the Founder of the Jeff Galloway Training Programs. He's coached over 300,000 runners and walkers to-date. Jeff is also the author of North America's bestselling running books: Galloway's Book on Running, Galloway Training Programs, The Run-Walk-Run Method, and other inspiring books.
There are lots of things we can learn from other people and other disciplines and sectors. Me, I've taken the run-walk-run strategy and applied it to work. Yep – that's the pomodoro technique. Followed the timer STRICTLY. I learnt: The app matters. My endurance increased. My satisfaction increased. Stop-start was initially difficult but now easy. Flexible break activities are important to the break → work transition. Link to transcript: https://www.drrichardhuysmans.com/how-i-apply-the-run-walk-run-strategy-to-work-2/

Have you always wanted to run a 5k or 10k? Maybe you’re a newbie or beginner runner or maybe you’re a veteran looking to improve and PR. About the Interview In this episode of Hilary Topper on Air, Hilary interviews Jeff Galloway, America's Coach for running and walking and inventor of the Run Walk Run method. Jeff will discuss the run walk run method and his newly released book, Galloway’s 5k/10k Running –Training for Runners & Walkers. Learn how runners and walkers don't have to become injured. Evaluate nutrition information, how to improve fitness, and reduce the aches and pains of running. About Jeff Galloway Over a million runners and walkers have been coached by Jeff Galloway through his Galloway Training Programs in 50 cities, run injury free schools, fitness retreats (FL and CA) E-coaching, books, and clinics. But before he became a US Olympian and “America’s Coach” he was an overweight and lazy 13-year-old who struggled during the first 10 years and understands the problems of non-elite exercisers. His hard work, research, and direct feedback from over 500,000 clients have resulted in the innovative and highly successful Galloway Method. This run walk run program has reduced aches/pains and injury risk to almost zero, helped beginners get off the couch and finish 5Ks, marathons, and beyond. Surprisingly, the method has allowed veterans to improve times in distance events and come back to running when they thought they could not. Jeff’s mission is to help all levels of exercisers experience the life-changing benefits of running without pain or exhaustion. Up in the Middle of the Night? It May Be Natural. Research raises questions about the importance of sleeping through the night. I got the invitation? So do I do 300 plus miles of racing across Tennessee in the middle of the summer? #VolState #Sleep #RunWalk The upshot is that we still have a lot to learn about sleep and insomnia. For individuals who wake up in the middle of the night, the realization that their awakening may just be a throwback to an earlier sleep pattern may reduce some of the frustration and anxiety they feel. This is part of the cognitive behavioral technique of cognitive restructuring, or reducing stress by having more accurate information about sleep. It is also possible that we need to think about other patterns of sleep and not confine ourselves to assuming that the regimented, factory-shift-driven model we’ve all come to know is what we should to strive for. There is likely more than one way for the Sandman to welcome us to the Land of Nod. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/sleepless-in-america/201609/in-the-middle-the-night-it-may-be-natural The Vol-State is not just another ultramarathon. It is much more than that. The Vol-State is a journey, an adventure, and an exploration of inner space. It begins with a ferry ride across the Mississippi River, from Missouri to Kentucky, and finishes at “the Rock,” high atop Sand Mountain in Northeast Georgia. What lies in between are 314 miles of the great unknown. From the time the Vol-Stater steps off the Ferry, until they reach the Rock, they are totally reliant upon their own physical and mental resources. For the next four to ten days, in the face of the heat and humidity of July in Tennessee , the Vol-Stater must make their way on foot, along highways and backroads, from one small town to the next, over hills and across rivers, up mountains and down long valleys, all the while accounting for all of their most basic needs; “what will I eat?” “When will I find water?” Where will I sleep?” Principles behind Run Walk Run: • Continuous use of a muscle will result in quicker fatigue • The longer the run segment, the more fatigue • Run Walk Run is a form of interval training • Conservation of resources • Quicker recovery • Less stress on the “weak links” • Ability to enjoy endorphins • Reduce core body temperature http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/run-walk/ In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. At age 75, legendary coach and Olympian Jeff Galloway is almost as famous for walking as he is for running. Jeff says his run-walk-run method of training enables people to run longer and faster with much less risk of injury, and his half a million followers agree. In this episode, Jeff talks about how he developed his walk/run technique and how everyone from absolute beginners to the fastest runners can benefit from it. He also shares with Coach Claire how he’s getting more steps in while working from home, how runners can stay motivated during the pandemic, what his Magic Mile is and how to use it for training, and what he’s doing at age 75 to ensure he can keep running until age 100 and beyond. Not only is there a lot to be learned from Jeff in this interview, but he also has a new book out called Galloway’s 5K/10K Running, Training for Runners & Walkers. The book describes Jeff’s Run Walk Run method and how it can be used to reduce aches and pains and fatigue while improving race times. It includes training plans, easy-to-read advice on medical checkups, nutrition for runners, fat-burning workouts, choosing the right running shoes, how to stay motivated, and a race day checklist. The book is definitely a great tool for runners at any level! Jeff worked his way from being an average teenage runner to an Olympian. His book Galloway’s Book on Running is the best selling running book in North America. He also wrote columns for Runner's World for 20-plus years, he’s an international running and fitness speaker, and as a coach, has helped 400,000-plus average people train for their goals. His Run Walk Run marathon training program boasts an impressive 98% success rate. Questions Jeff is asked: 3:35 At this point in your career, you are almost as famous for walking as you are for running! Can you talk about what you love about walking in general and its benefits for runners? 9:09 How would you recommend all of us who are working from home get more transition time between sitting at our computers and running and get more steps in? How do we get our work done and still get in all our steps? 10:51 Maybe because we’re all stuck at home and the gyms are closed, I see more people in my neighborhood than ever out walking, out running, out doing things, people you’d never see before. So what advice would you give to someone just starting out? 14:58 Should runners of all levels use walking in their training and racing? What’s your opinion on intermediate-to-advanced runners? 16:12 I’m a steady runner. I run even splits no matter what, and in the last marathon that I was in, there was somebody next to me who was leapfrogging me. And he was running super fast and then he would walk, and then I’d pass him, and he’d run super fast and then he would walk. And this is at a sub-three-hour marathon pace, and so I was just like, “That is pretty impressive to see someone doing that,” because in order to get to the finish line in the same time as me, his run section would have to be significantly faster to make up for the walking. So I thought that was very interesting. 17:32 Is there a proper technique to walking or can you just go out and walk like you always do? 18:43 The walk in the run/walk method is not just a stroll; this is a walk with purpose? 19:42 Let's talk about the Magic Mile. What is so magic about it and how do you use it for training? 22:03 So you just go out, you run a mile as fast as you can, and then you pop it into a calculator. Is that it for the Magic Mile? 23:53 When I use the Magic Mile calculator on your site, my predicted marathon time is far slower than what I actually could run for the marathon. Can you explain this? 25:21 My Magic Mile calculator result could just mean that I’m bad at short distances and better at long distances, right? 25:43 In a recent podcast, I asked leaders in the running community what they did to continue running for life, and I actually got somebody wanting to know what you do. They asked for you specifically, so I would love to hear your thoughts on how you’re going to keep running to 100 and beyond. 30:16 A lot of runners and walkers really look forward to having a race on their calendar, and with 2020 being as crazy as it has been, not all of us have those races on the calendar. How would you talk to those people who really get motivated by races when there aren’t any? 33:43 What is next for you? Questions I ask everyone: 36:40 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give? 38:57 What is the greatest gift running has given you? 39:55 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Jeff: “There are a lot of people that won’t start running unless you tell them, ‘Well, just walk. Give it a try.’ And then if they’re interested, I offer them a proven way to add small segments of jogging or shuffling in a 30-second to 60-second timeframe so that they gradually introduce the body to the running motion. And I found that almost anybody can get into running, get all the benefits, and not have aches and pains if they have the right Run Walk Run.” “If you want to walk, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with walking. You honestly are not going to get the brain benefits that you get even from five seconds of running at a time.” “If runners want to run faster in races, then it’s definitely a good idea to put the walk breaks in.” “The whole thing about running as you get older is all based on what your body part can handle that’s getting irritated, and I call those weak links. We all have weak links and we have to be attentive to them, and at the first irritation of a weak link, you back off, you treat it, and you go on.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? Jeff was an average high school runner, who, by not giving up, went on to be an All-American at Florida State, and an Olympic Athlete (1972 10,000m). He started running as an avenue to be part of a high school team, when he was told that the cross country coach was the most lenient of all coaches. It didn't take long for Jeff to realize how running could change his life. Jeff is the creator of the strategic Run-Walk-Run method as a way to increase fitness levels without accruing injuries. He is a well read and well educated coach that has written several books, most notably, Galloway's Book on Running https://rb.gy/xzvdth Which is regarded as the quintessential book on the art and science of running. The “Human Metronome”, when it comes to pacing, Jeff finds a great deal of satisfaction in training and mentoring other runners, believing that he can coach runners to run until they are 100. Jeff's his biggest thrill was when he paced his friend Jack Bacheler to qualify for the 1972 Olympics.
Principles behind Run Walk Run: • Continuous use of a muscle will result in quicker fatigue • The longer the run segment, the more fatigue • Run Walk Run is a form of interval training • Conservation of resources • Quicker recovery • Less stress on the “weak links” • Ability to enjoy endorphins • Reduce core body temperature Ready to run? 5Ks are a great way to get started. Five kilometers is about 3.1 miles, or exactly 12.5 laps around a standard running track. And, more importantly, it is a distance that anyone can achieve. Whether competing against the clock or your own expectations, this plan will help you get ready to run the whole way. This approachable and manageable plan builds from walk/jog intervals to progression runs to breaking up a 5k into longer - but manageable - chunks. You will have the confidence to take on the distance after working your way through this four-week plan. Training for an event can seem daunting. But don’t worry - you don’t need to run marathons, have a six-pack, a twelve-pack or any pack really. All you need to is mental strength, a hefty helping of stamina, and some committed teammates determined to see it through. Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Plant based nutrition gives you a lot of energy. The next step is upping your exercise. The American Heart Association suggests 150 minutes of cardiovascular exercise each week. This is a minimum. In fact there is no amount of exercise that has been shown to decrease cardiac fitness. Exercise is the best medicine to treat depression and reduce stress. It has even been shown to improve memory. As we age we loose muscle and bone mass often leading to joint instability and failure resulting in a need for replacement. A couple of years ago when I considered doing my first half marathon in years, I discovered Jeff Galloway's book Running Until Your 100. In it, he advocates for people – especially those 45 years and older – to add walk breaks to their running. When done right, he claims that people of all ages can remain injury-free while obtaining the many benefits of running. Galloway is an Olympian runner and coach that has made it his mission to improve people's quality of life through running. He is the creator of the Galloway Run-Walk-Run Program and for 33 years he has coached over ½ million runners and answers an average of 100 emails a day. Since the Coronavirus pandemic, I've seen many people and families taking walks. Of course, we all keep from each other but many of us relish the time spent outside. And this got me thinking about how this is the perfect time for people to try running with a much gentler and enjoyable strategy. As people get older, they often think they can no longer run or that running is bad for them. In episode 29 of The Healthy Family Podcast, Jeff Galloway explains how his Run-Walk-Run program can help people at midlife and beyond enjoy running without getting injured. It's also a great way for anyone at any age to start running.

Returning guest Jeff Galloway, the official RunDisney coach for marathon training and founder of the Run-Walk-Run method, sits down to cover some of his most Frequently Asked Questions after his last visit to the podcast. Among those: - What do I do to cross train and strength build to prevent injury? - What exercises are beneficial when I am injured?, and... How do I know when I'm doing too much? Going right along with these questions, we touch on the ideal "Run:Walk Time Ratio" for various paces and levels, as backed up by current research and data on thousands of runners. Examples- 8 min/mile might do 4min run and 30sec walk while 12 min/mile might do 45-90sec run and 30-60sec walk. More can be found at jeffgalloway.com/pdf/walkbreaks.pdf or in his newly revised Run-Walk-Run Method book! Jeff also touches on the importance of adjusting pace according to high temperatures and level of training. This is one short but beneficial talk not to miss! Every runner knows that walking during a run sort of feels like cheating. Runners only walk after they cross the finish line. Walking is often seen as a sign of weakness reserved for beginners, the injured and the defeated. After all, we call ourselves runners, not walkers. Right? What should I do when I don't feel like running?...walk! Consider this: Jeff Galloway, former Olympic runner and professional running coach, ran his fastest ever marathon at the age of 35 coming in at a cool 2:16. He is now 74 years young with hundreds of marathons behind him and plenty more ahead. He hasn’t dealt with a running injury in over 40 years and has coached over 1 million runners to feel as great about running as he does. His secret to his success? Walking. After returning from the navy, Jeff was out of (running) shape and was attending graduate school at Florida State University. He started training with a goal to qualify for the Olympic trials and was quickly introduced to the heat and humidity of the Southeast. Without taking walk breaks Jeff would literally start to hallucinate during his runs. He found that taking a one-minute walk break after each mile he ran dramatically increased his ability to train for the Olympics. He did qualify for the Olympics in 1972 and went on to run the 10,000-meter race in Munich representing the U.S. Several years later, he was asked to create a training program for beginning runners. He implemented the “Run Walk Run” theory that he used to train for the Olympics. However, he underestimated the effect he would have not only on beginning runners, but many advanced runners around the world. Why walking is for everyone Walking isn’t just for beginners or people getting back into running shape. Since Jeff began his “Run Walk Run” campaign, his team has done studies on how taking short walk breaks can improve runners of nearly all levels. They have found that someone who hasn’t previously used the “Run Walk Run” method improves their marathon time by an average of thirteen minutes when they incorporate walk breaks. Oh, and that PR Jeff set at the age of 35? Yep. He even took several walk breaks during his best marathon. But how? Why? For Jeff, it’s all about the mental game. When he takes walk breaks (which can last anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds) he is able to focus his mind on how he’s running. He does a quick check to make sure he isn’t slumped forward, his strides are landing correctly, and his overall form is flawless. These short breaks have helped thousands of runners keep their energy up throughout long distance runs. Jeff also attributes his injury-free running career to this technique. Each break allows him time to refocus on race strategy, correct bad form, and give his legs a short break. Better form and less fatigue is the key to injury prevention. Short breaks from running make that possible. So, what are you waiting for? Start walking! Having a positive running attitude Jeff approaches running with an immense amount of positivity, which he mostly attributes to his parents. Just listening to Jeff’s voice gives you the impression that he could spend hours giving advice to any inquisitive runner. In fact, he spends 5 to 6 hours a day answering emails from his running students. In this podcast, Jeff relates two heart-warming stories that show his genuine spirit. After qualifying for the Olympic 10k, Jeff made it his personal goal to help his good friend Jack Bacheler qualify for the marathon event after Jack did not qualify for the 10k. Jeff paced Jack for that trial event and slowed down during the last few seconds to allow Jack to take the final spot on the team. Jeff Galloway also talks about his favorite student he ever had. That student went from only being able to run the distance between two telephone poles, to qualifying for Boston at the age of 75. (Listen to the podcast to find out who that student was. No spoilers!) Approaching a race as you age is something Jeff has mastered. At some point everyone has to face the fact that their body can’t do what it once could. Joining a strong community of runners and having the attitude of “we’re all in this together” can help ease the transition. Jeff recommends changing your goals as you age. “I can focus on something else,” he says, “I can be injury free. I can enjoy every run. I can run with family and friends.” Running (and walking) is for everyone. Coming to terms with how YOU run is important to experiencing lifelong running fulfillment. Being real with your own training and avoiding the comparison trap is crucial to being a healthy and successful runner. This is Running for Real. Run Walk Run has rekindled my passion for running (and walking)! I recently attended one of Jeff Galloway's Running Schools. QuerÃa ayudarlos a empezar a correr. Welcome back to another episode of the Run Eat Drink Podcast! On Sunday, August 6th, America's Coach and Olympian, Jeff Galloway, hosted a 3-hour running school in Orlando, Florida at the Track Shack. This gave me a great opportunity to share with all of you what his method is all about and why it works. It was such a great experience, and afterward we sampled some tasty food and beverages right around the corner at Santiago's Bodega. In part three, we explore the resources that Jeff has to offer on his website. Anyone, from someone just getting started to an elite runner, can use his method to improve time or train to cross that finish line for the first time and feel great after the race. These resources include books, videos, a run-walk-run timer, resources for recovery like the BFF massager, and a variety of support from e-coaching to race retreats, local galloway training groups, and customized training. He also mentions his JG 13.1 Race Weekend and I did not talk about it in the interview, mainly because I was so honored and a bit "starstruck" to be talking to Jeff, but we have run both Barb's 5K and the 13.1 for two years now. It is one of the best race weekends out there. There is no pressure because the course time limit is 4 hours and 30 minutes. It is run-walk-run friendly, of course. The Atlanta sites are amazing on the courses and the finish, with Jeff there to congratulate you whether you are first or the very last runner, is incredible, too. We cannot wait to feature that race on this podcast, and he has special guest and Olympic Gold Medalist, Billy Mills, coming to give a motivational and inspirational talk. It will be a great weekend! In this episode, we also feature another amazing tapas dish from Santiago's Bodega, Patatas Bravas. It was tasty, and it was different from the version we had at Patio Tapas and Beer in Boca Raton at the Run, Sweat, and Beers 5K in July. Both are worth the trip, let me tell you! Special thanks to the Orlando Track Shack, Jeff Galloway, and Santiago's Bodega for allowing us to film this episode. Welcome back to Run Eat Drink Podcast! In this episode, I want to share the method I use to train for races of all distances. I discovered his method in January 2011, when I ran my first half marathon at Walt Disney World. I was an inexperienced runner who found a book online with a running schedule in it, tried to follow it, and headed to the race. Mistakes were made. I would describe that experience as painful and a real struggle, although I crossed the finish line with my husband and accomplished the goal. At the race expo, Jeff was giving a motivational talk about his method. He talked about taking walk breaks so you can finish strong. Those walk breaks are short, 30 seconds or less, and protect you from running out of gas at the end of the race. It does not matter whether you are trying to qualify for Boston or complete your first race, he said, you can use this method to pass others at the end, finish with a smile, and still have energy to celebrate afterward. When we got home and started to train for our next race, his words were in the back of my mind. I did some research and found that he had a whole program, and that there was "an app for that" from LoloFit. It gives you a training plan based on your goal, a recommended ratio for running and walking, and during the workouts, it is Jeff's voice telling you when to run, when to walk, and dropping in occasionally with motivation and encouragement to keep going. I cannot tell you what a difference it made in training, motivation, and performance. I became one of his e-coach clients, and have been an avid supporter ever since! Jeff took the time to do an interview with us, and he gave us so much great information, so we are breaking up his interview into three separate podcast episodes. This is the first part of his chat with us, Jeff talks about the history of the run-walk-run method and how he became "America's Coach." In part two, we will explore the science behind the method, and in the final part of his interview with us, Jeff shares resources for anyone out there who wants to use his run-walk-run method. Special thanks to the Orlando Track Shack, Jeff Galloway, and Santiago's Bodega for allowing us to film this episode. Last Thursday we traveled to Boca Raton for the Levis JCC's Run, Sweat, and Beers 5K. While in Boca, we got the chance to eat at an amazing Tapas restaurant, Patio Tapas and Beer. When you check in on Yelp, you get a free Sangria, and it being National Wine and Cheese Day today, July 25th, we thought we'd post our review of Patio Tapas and Beer's tasty red sangria. If you are ever in Boca, you should stop by this small restaurant that is packed full of delicious beverages and tapas. While this is not a "Quick Bite" or a regular episode, I wanted to put a question out to my fellow runners. When I can't travel to a destination race, I will be sharing my experiences running, but also asking questions of those runners who are much more experienced than I am. Like I always say, I am a "back of the pack" kind of runner who makes the most of the race entry fee. I look to more experienced runners to gain information and I will share what has worked for me in addition to filming the full podcast episodes where I feature a great city, destination run, delicious food, and tasty beverages. I always say we accomplish, explore, and indulge together. That accomplishment comes from sharing what I know and learning from the great people I connect with online and through social media. Wait... What?? That’s correct. 1972 Olympian, Jeff Galloway, who was self-coached and absorbed as much as he could from other runners has proven that to go fast, you should go slow. Hundreds of thousands of runners have trained with his method and the results he shares in this episode are nothing short of amazing. Since starting his retail store, Phidippides, in Atlanta, Georgia in 1975, Jeff has listened to runners who were looking for better and better training strategies. He has developed training methods, retreats at multiple locations around the globe, written several books, trained runners directly and remotely, written for Runner's World, partnered with Disney… well, you get the idea. We are so very lucky to have Jeff join us to tell us about his personal experiences with running and how his unique training philosophy has helped runners at all levels achieve great results while avoiding injury. This is likely to be one of those episodes that you listen to over and over because there is just so much good information. Be sure to check out the links below for even more tools and resources! Here are some of the topics we’ll discuss today: Jeff’s personal experiences running in college and his Olympic trials. Jeff counterintuitive training methods including full distance training and Run Walk Run. The benefits of group training. How The Magic Mile accurately predicts a runner’s future race times. How to leverage our human brain to keep our ‘Monkey Brain’ under control. Questions Jeff is asked: 2:50 What are some of your favorite moments as a runner? 11:55 Do you think professional / elite runners today would give up a spot in a race to help a teammate advance? 13:30 How was it having a group working together in the early 1970’s? 15:06 What’s your theory on why there aren't more big groups of people who want to train together? 17:12 Should recreational runners train in groups? 19:26 How can people get involved in your training groups? 22:20 You have runners do a 26 - 29 mile run 3 weeks before their marathon at a slower pace for 6-7 hours? 24:38 So the only you’re adding on race day is running faster? 24:55 What exactly is the Magic Mile? 26:29 How do runners get their individual Magic Mile times? 26:59 Is it just running that mile as fast as you can? 27:51 What is the Run Walk Run method? 31:14 What would you like to say to runners who have a social stigma against walking? 33:51 Does the amount of walking differ for each person? 35:24 What is the ‘Monkey Brain’? 38:13 How long should the walk-breaks be? 40:00 How does it feel to have a training method named after you? 42:29 How does it feel to have a whole event series named after you? 45:07 What is involved in your retreats? 48:02 Do you have a favorite race you recommend all runners do at least once? 53:54 The Final Kick Round Quotes by Jeff: Even on the days when I was physically destroyed, which was most of the days during the first month, I felt better in my head and in my spirit than I had ever felt in my life. I helped my father get into running when he was 52. I never heard any of my Florida Track Club teammates brag unless they were being funny about something. There is no doubt that when you have a stable of good runners you can get some really good workouts if the coach is monitoring the effort level and making sure the athletes aren’t running over their heads in workouts. The reason our Group Retreats have expanded is because there is so much interest in getting individual help with running and learning hands-on: ‘How do you do these drills’, ‘What is my form like’, ‘Am I doing something wrong?’. We found that people tend to hit the wall within about a mile of the that they ran on long runs within the last 3 weeks. And so, by going the (full race) distance, not only do people feel strong and have more belief that they CAN do it, but they actually run FASTER. (The Run Walk Run) is a method that conserves resources that reduces injuries down to practically NOTHING and allows runners to run faster in long distances. You are the captain of your ship. You are the one who determines how you’re going to run.
TNL35 - Run Walk Run. Today Liam talk's to Geoff about changing the way he is approaching his first marathon and is thinking about introducing a Run Walk Run method to his approach for the marathon. Heard on the a recent Marathon Training academy podcast, Jeff Galloway was a guest on the show and talked about his approach to finishing marathons. Jeff the 1972 10000M Olympian realised that he could help beginners more, by allowing them to walk at the time they couldn't go any further whilst running. Many years and participants later, and Jeff has workout out a formulae that may help us all to finish our goals. Liam and Jeff discuss the advantages and disadvantages to this method, and wether or not Liam should use it to help him cross the line in August. Questions? Send us a mail. The "Perfect Health Diet" book claims to have the four steps to renewed health, youthful vitality and long life. But what is the Perfect Health Diet? In this interview, I talk to author Paul Jaminet, and ask him the following questions about the relatively high fat and unique diet contained in the "Perfect Health Diet" book. In your book, you list several reasons you believe a 20-65-15 carb-fat-protein ratio to be ideal…what are those reasons? Isn't glucose the body's primary fuel? What about people who are exercising like an Ironman athlete? Can they really eat that much fat, and have you seen this done? Why do athletes think that eating more protein helps them to add muscle? In your book, you list what you consider to be the four most dangerous foods. What are they, and why are they dangerous? In your book, you say that you eat "conventional supermarket meats". Does that mean you don't eat organic, grass fed meat, and if not, why? In your book, you list vegetables as a fat source. Can you explain how that works? You say that coconut oil leads to a naturally slim waist. How? Why do you recommend people supplement with high dose iodine? Why do you encourage long ketogenic fasts? ...And much more! ----------------------------------------------------- Special Announcements: -New! Mario asks: I like to listen to music and podcasts, is there a set of headphones you would recommend for use both indoors in the gym and outdoors. I especially hate when they snag and rip out of ears, what do you use? In my response to Mario, I recommend Yurbuds. Alan asks: I eat low carb (not much processed foods/sugars) but my father is having kidney issues (doctor can not explain it but kidney function is down to like 50%) and is being told he can not eat much in the way of protien (like 30 grams/day) or potassium. he is also being told to eat everything i have learned is bad and will lead to weight gain and insulin issues such as white bread. he is also on blood pressure medications, etc. this is certainly beyond me and the doctors/nutritionists are advising and do not seem concerned about what seems to be an extremely unhealthy diet. do you have any thoughts on what he could do or where to look for better advice? Sam asks: I just read this article. What do you make of it. Are Tour de France cyclists exceptions to the rules, or how does this assessment compare to yours? These cyclists are surely putting their bodies through considerably more stress than any AGer. On the other hand, their nutrition and rest/work cycles may be more controlled than an AGer. Did the time period have anything to do with it (Gatorade was not invented yet!)? http://www.wired.com/playbook/2011/06/myth-too-much-exercise/ Craig asks: Jeff Galloway's philosophy of Run-Walk-Run has helped me in runs. Could this apply to Triathlon (at least the bike and run legs)? In my response to Craig, I recommend he watch the Bobby Mcghee video interview series at EndurancePlanet.com. Andree asks: Beer gut. Is there really such a thing? Anonymous asks: My whole life I have had lumps, or nodes of tissue under my nipples. I am a 32 year old male and have never had any issues with this and am in great health, however, what are these and is there a way to make them go away? In my response, I refer to Get-Fit Guy's man-boobs episode. Chuck asks: I've heard that taking coconut oil can "increase your metabolism up to 48%" over 14 hours (not sure exactly on the time). Is this true? Also, what I'm more interested in, is that I've heard it can increase energy? Is this true, and if so, how much coconut oil should I take to accomplish this? Would it be a good idea to incorporate some before a workout? Tony asks: Having been newly diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and having experimented with a gluten free regime positively, I'm now struggling with blood sugar highs and lows, I'm concerned that the relatively high gi foods I'm now eating such as rice and potatoes are causing these issues. Any tips on minimizing these probs would be gratefully received. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! Laurie Moritz is a runner, speaker, author, Empowered Spiritual Life Coach and is the creator of Running Spirit Coaching, which combines empowering women to transform and “heal” their body image and then race into fitness. In 2008, Laurie used the Run-Walk-Run method to run the More Marathon in New York City, the only race in the world where you have to be a woman over 40 to get in! Laurie loves this way of running so much, she became a Program Director for Jeff Galloway. This year, she coached a group of men and women to train for and run the 2010 Des Moines Half Marathon, and the majority of the group had never run beyond a 3 mile (5K) race.
