Meg opens up the floor after a bit of a hiatus from posting new episodes due to the state of the world, in particular for the cast considering they live in the United States. Drea's coping by making really delicious bread, learning crochet, and watching Frank play God of War while watching Star Gate. Tina relays that her father was also a giant Star Gate fan and they watched together when she was younger. Tina talks about how the internet is a hot mess due to the amount of small businesses closing up shop. Meg discusses how in times of uncertainty, the fiber arts economy tends to suffer because its considered more of a luxury. Big buys of yarn is not in the cards while actual crafting, sewing, mending, and more is definitely higher for practical usage. Drea mentions patching up ladies' sweaters at work. Meg talks about the downsizing of bases used for Critical Hit Dyes. Jess talks about how the algorithm is pushing certain types of content creators off folks' feeds in our current divisive environment. This episode reflects on how current life events are affecting our businesses, lives, and how we are seeing it affect others. We mention our opinions and personal experiences regarding the current live events, but we are not claiming to be experts on economy, politics, languages, or otherwise.Find out more about the podcast as well as our cast Meg, Drea, Tina, and Jess at our website pardonmystash.com. Jess wants to know what's in everybody's notion bags! First, there's an enamel pin check, and then Jess dumps their bag out to compare to what everyone else has. Jess and Tina realize they are the only ones with random yarn scraps in their bags. How many scissors does Tina have? Drea has a plethora of row counters. Meg has adorable bird stitch markers Drea gave her as a holiday gift recently. Tina may have an entire needle store in her bags. For some reason the cast keeps thinking of different ways to use their notions as impromptu weapons. Jess continues to go through their bag and ask who has what. You'll find out a lot about each cast member and their preferences when it comes to notions and tools! Wait until the end for a surprise item in Drea's bag!Find out more about the podcast as well as our cast Meg, Drea, Tina, and Jess at our website pardonmystash.com. Tina says they have a lot to cover! First things first, a moment of silence for Joann's closing down - a U.S. based craft store retailer that has been in business for over 80 years. Don't worry, Meg's mom is buying her quilting fabric online now, so she's all good! Tina discusses the fake funny story how Michaels and Joann's were once a married couple, fought about what a craft store should be, and they got divorced and made their own stores. Jess reminisces about "cosplay" days to grab fabrics for different costumes. Drea mentions she is making out well with the yarn sales from the liquidation. Meg offers the idea of giving turtles to random people to help with Drea's excessive crochet turtle problem. Tina asks our listeners to send in questions they may have about our different projects we work on such as yarn dyeing, pattern designing, and podcasting to help us create mini bonus episodes to sprinkle into our regular episode releases. You can send these questions in through our website using on contact form found at the bottom of all pages.Next, Tina brings up questions and topic suggestions the cast has received from Discord and email submissions. They go through lots of different questions and ideas, and also pick some to save for a full episode later on!Find out more about the podcast as well as our cast Meg, Drea, Tina, and Jess at our website pardonmystash.com. Welcome to Season 5! For 2025, Drea asks our fiber loving crew for updates from when we were gone during our annual break in January. Drea announces she has a "banger" for an episode, and starts a game of This or That. After being confused about the only rule of the game for a moment, Drea starts with easy questions like knit or purl, and progressively gets harder and harder for everyone to answer. Jess keeps their answers to what they don't hate just yet - keyword, yet! Tina goes brioche "all day every day". Drea considers enterlac for a hat project. Meg likes to use feather and fan for the edges of projects over herringbone, and dislikes lacework because a mistake is catastrophic and not easy to fix. There are much more choices made! See if your choice aligns with some of the cast members! Stay until the end to hear a fun Frank-provided "this or that".Find out more about the podcast as well as our cast Meg, Drea, Tina, and Jess at our website pardonmystash.com. This week, we take another look back at the conversations we had over the past year, highlighting some of our happiest, smartest, and most insightful exchanges. We discuss whose advice is worth taking, whether any business can be remarkable, which businesses should try EOS, why family businesses can be so vexing, what to do when big businesses refuse to pay small businesses, the challenges of pricing services, the backlash against diversity, and finally the remarkably moving story of the moment that propelled one entrepreneur first to get fired and then to launch a remanufacturing business that would hit $60 million in revenue in less than five years. There aren't many places where you can hear entrepreneurs talk about the real-life problems they are confronting right now, today, as they happen—with no guarantee of a happy ending. But those are the conversations I have every week with Shawn Busse of Kinesis, Paul Downs of Paul Downs Cabinetmakers, Jay Goltz of Artists Frame Service, Mel Gravely of Triversity Construction, Jennifer Kerhin of SB Expos & Events, Liz Picarazzi of Citibin, Jaci Russo of BrandRusso, Sarah Segal of Segal Communications, William Vanderbloemen of Vanderbloemen Search Group, and Laura Zander of Jimmy Beans Wool. They come from a wide range of industries and geographies and experiences, but they all share a willingness to talk about not just what they get right but what they've learned from getting stuff wrong.
It's that time of year again! Pardon My Stash likes to feature our bloopers from the past year as our final episode of the season. This year features the sound board misbehaving, perfectly timed accidental noises, distractions, as well as segments that didn't make it off the cutting floor. Tina takes you through each of the clips that she has saved throughout the year while editing the main podcast episodes. As a reminder, we take a break in January from recording. Our next episode will post in February. We will see you after the break!Find out more about the podcast as well as our cast Meg, Drea, Tina, and Jess at our website pardonmystash.com. Meg helps us get some experience points for our old lady level grinding. Tina starts out with something that happened that very evening before they started recording! Drea talks about her experience with her year-end work party. Meg has bursitis. Jess and their co-workers were talking about taxes. Then, they take a positive spin on the conversation and talk about awesome positives to getting older. Also, can someone PLEASE make brunch karaoke silent disco a thing? This week, and next week, we take a look back at the conversations we had over the past year, highlighting some of our happiest, smartest, funniest, and most difficult exchanges. We discuss topics such as whether the Great Resignation prompted business owners to overreact and overpay employees, whether the anxiety of owning a business ever subsides, what young couples should ask themselves before one of them starts a business, why owners find marketing so difficult, how owners can sell a business that just won't sell, and what keeps entrepreneurs going when the going gets really tough. There aren't many places where you can hear entrepreneurs talk about the real-life problems they are confronting right now, today, as they happen—with no guarantee of a happy ending. Tina starts this episode out talking about what grinds her gears. From cords coming undone from needles to test knits with unreasonable deadlines to patterns that say they are size inclusive but have a very limited view of what size inclusive means, the group talks about different things that get under their skin when it comes to the fiber arts.We are proud to support the #SocksForSam initiative, a 501(3)(C) charity! Drea leads the episode going over how New York Sheep & Wool in Rhinebeck, NY went for the cast. They discuss about the changes done to improve crowd flow and layout, as well as a general note to folks to be more mindful when walking around the festival for those using mobility devices. The meetup was a blast, and everyone talks about who they met and what stories really touched their hearts as well as the free swag they handed out! It was awesome to be able to meet everyone on a Saturday, but the conclusion was that the group is more of a Sunday crowd fan due to the large number of people that show up on Saturday. Drea reminds everyone to find their joy! They go over what they ended up bringing back from the festival and provide vendor highlights. We are proud to support the #SocksForSam initiative, a 501(3)(C) charity! Meg alarms Drea and Tina because they forgot it's time to head to Rhinebeck! It's a special year because the cast will be attending on SATURDAY instead of Sunday this year! Join Pardon My Stash at the Grassy Knoll near Gate 1 from 2:00pm to 2:30pm. It sounds like they might have some goodies to hand out, especially Drea and her shady sales (don't worry, nothing illegal!). Meg reminisces about NY Sheep and Wool and asks everyone what they are looking forward to. Tina is on a mission to find the perfect ivory wedding shawl for a beachy wedding for her sister-in-law. Jess found Tina a pattern to use that's beautiful but failed to let her know that it has 2600+ beads in the project. Drea asks Meg if she found all the beads off the floor after last week's fiasco. Drea usually looks for sheep art, but doesn't have a particular plan for purchases. Tina leads the episode and all hell breaks loose. Literally! She starts our cast on a Choose Your Own Adventure type of journey where zombies have invaded the neighborhood, and all they have to support their survival through this arduous path is their crafting tools, notions, and yarns! The cast quickly want to establish environment parameters like it's Dungeons and Dragons, and Tina quickly comes up with rules and regulations. First thing, Jess forgets to take out the trash (again!), and zombies are coming up the street. Meg starts tying the door with yarn. Drea practices her stabbing techniques. It goes all downhill from there. The entire episode is a lot of silliness before our huge 100th episode bonanza; we hope you enjoy the journey with us for a casual, knitting with zombies episode!Find out more about the podcast as well as our cast Meg, Drea, Tina, and Jess at our website pardonmystash.com. Drea leads the episode about taking the victory lap to the end - binding off your project when you're about to finish! She particularly likes two bind off styles, the traditional or the "old reliable" and a bind off she doesn't remember the name for, but creates a nice, finished look. Tina says her preferred bind off depends on the type of project she is working on, as each project has a bind off that makes more sense for what needs to be stretchy or taut. Drea talks about socks and the kitchener stitch. Meg prefers Jenny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off, and also loves to do an i-cord bind off as she likes how it looks. If Jess could get away with it, they would use the traditional bind off for everything. They also have a love hate relationship with tubular bind offs.We want to remind our listeners that this is a casual knit night format; we are by no means knitting or crochet experts. These are our opinions and preferences only - if you want to learn more about bind off techniques, there are great YouTube channels that discuss and teach these bind offs very well and more in depth.Find out more about the podcast as well as our cast Meg, Drea, Tina, and Jess at our website pardonmystash.com. Meg alerts everyone that the topic has gone missing. This week, the group admits that this past half-year of 2024 has been tough. They can't decide on what to talk about after feeling really exhausted getting through it all. Drea deals with chronic pain issues. Jess can't seem to tether down their ADHD. Tina talks about her ongoing battle with her mystery illness and the loss of her father at the beginning of July. Meg talks about knitting and its place in grief along with her experience losing her father. Compared to last year, Meg feels a bit lost on where to go and what to do.Find out more about the podcast as well as our cast Meg, Drea, Tina, and Jess at our website pardonmystash.com. Jess starts this episode with letting us know about the Q&A section on our website for listeners to ask questions they may have for us to answer on our episodes. This leads into our topic about sweater construction. Jess brings up seamless sweaters, while Meg brings up comparisons with seamless and seamed sweaters. Drea provides her first cardigan story that ended up with a really heavily cabled sweater. Tina compares her experience with seamed and seamless sweaters. They chat about german short rows, raglan, and more!Find out more about the podcast as well as our cast Meg, Drea, Tina, and Jess at our website pardonmystash.com. Tina takes the cast through a fun game of Would You Rather with questions related to the fiber arts and crafting in general. Shenanigans begin to ensue immediately. Drea may have found the only reason why she would use laceweight (but doubled up!). Meg wants the option of unlimited access to patterns over yarn. Nobody wants to teach people over learning a tough technique (even if they were paid!). There are many, many more scenarios the cast is put through. Drea leads the episode while the cast discuss different habits they have adopted since becoming a part of the fiber arts community. Tina has confessions. Jess has borbs. Drea has CROCHET blankets, not knit blankets. Meg has a sweater on a coworker she would love to take a picture of (and it's NOT creepy!). Meg leads the episode with a quick segment regarding sponsorship for the podcast. Then, we dive into the main topic which is about expressing yourself and how you do so in your projects, creations, and ways you craft. Meg talks about how she knits often with blue colorways. Jess talks about their passion for dragons inside their crafting. Tina discusses how she doesn't keep most of her makes, and tends to create items for other people. Drea initially can't think a theme or trend that applies to her, but Tina suggests her love for texture. Drea reveals her history of buying yarn based on her current feelings of the moment, and that affects the color.Find out more about the podcast as well as our cast Meg, Drea, Tina, and Jess at our website pardonmystash.com. This week, in episode 186, Shawn Busse and Laura Zander discuss what exactly Laura's job should be. She's CEO, of course, and she's been focused on acquisitions and growing the business, but she's never really found someone to take over the big role she used to play, which leads to these questions: Should she go back to being her own chief marketing officer? Or does she need to go out and spend real money to hire one? And then, toward the end of the conversation, Laura actually devises a plan on the spot to sell yarn in a surprising and creative way, which perhaps answers the very question we'd been discussing. Plus: Shawn explains how having the right partner can make or break a business as he celebrates having made his final payout to his own former partner.
This week, we take a look back at the conversations we had last year about the many rewards and responsibilities of business ownership, highlighting some of our happiest, smartest, funniest, and most difficult exchanges from the past year. Along the way, we discuss topics such as escalating salary demands, how much profit a business should make, a new way to sell a business, the problems with ESOPs, how to sell cookies on LinkedIn, breaking a million dollars in annual revenue, escaping the valley of death, and the pain of having to fire a long-time employee. There aren't many places where you can hear entrepreneurs talk about the real-life problems they are confronting right now, today, as they happen—with no guarantee of a happy ending. But those are the conversations I have every week with Paul Downs of Paul Downs Cabinetmakers, Shawn Busse of Kinesis, Jay Goltz of Artists Frame Service, Mel Gravely of Triversity Construction, Jennifer Kerhin of SB Expos & Events, Liz Picarazzi of Citibin, Jaci Russo of BrandRusso, Sarah Segal of Segal Communications, William Vanderbloemen of Vanderbloemen Search Group, Dana White of a soon-to-be-named successor to Paralee Boyd, and Laura Zander of Jimmy Beans Wool.In this episode, we also highlight several appearances by special guests who stopped by in 2023 to discuss their journeys, including Muhammad Abdul-Hadi of Down North Pizza, Jeff Braverman of Nuts.com, Michael Brown of Teamshares, Brad Herrmann of Text-Em-All, Grayson Hogard of Grove Cookie Company, Lance Tyson of the Tyson Group, and Ari Weinzweig of Zingerman's. This week, in episode 148, Paul Downs, Sarah Segal, and Laura Zander discuss how they think about the possibility of recession: Do they proceed with planned hires? Do they continue to spend on marketing? Do they look for unexpected opportunities? In addition, Sarah, having recently taken back ownership of her PR firm, asks Paul and Laura how they pay themselves, how much cash they keep on hand, and whether they think she should expand her offerings to include digital marketing. Plus: Laura, who's acquired several businesses over the years, explains what she looks for, how she decides how much to pay, and why she's come to see acquisitions as necessary for the survival of Jimmy Beans Wool. As usual, all three owners are remarkably generous about sharing their thinking and even their numbers.
This week, in episode 87, Paul Downs, Dana White, and Laura Zander talk about the lessons they'll take from 2021 and what they're hoping to accomplish in 2022. Paul thinks he's found an alternative sales channel that will lessen his dependency on Google. Laura, who built Jimmy Beans Wool on ecommerce, is planning a renewed emphasis on brick-and-mortar retail. And Dana White is working on building the team that will help her pursue her remarkable opportunities with franchising and the military. Plus, we talk about how comfortable the owners feel showing up at work in a brand new car.
On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking about building a knitting business with my guest Louis Boria. After going viral for knitting during his daily subway commute from Brooklyn to Manhattan late in 2017, 45-year-old Puerto Rican Knitwear Designer and Philanthropist Louis Boria, also known as Brooklyn Boy Knits, has turned his passion for fiber arts into a platform where he now works with the community. He uses his platform to break down gender norms and tackle issues related to diversity and inclusion within the fiber arts community. Throughout his journey from novice knitter to designer to Tedx speaker and influencer, he has focused on helping others. He believes that creativity can help heal wounds, both our own and society’s. Boria has collaborated with fiber artists, fiber industry leaders, community partners, and school districts to provide an interactive, engaging, and fun program that teaches young students to value differences. Be sure to check out Louis’ Tedx talk, “Making the most of your moment” which can be found on YouTube. +++++ This episode is sponsored by Jimmy Beans Wool. Laura Zander, is the co-owner of LYS & market leading online retailer of yarn, Jimmy Beans Wool. Laura, along with her husband Doug, worked as software engineers during the dot-com era in the San Francisco area. When they saw the dot-com boom turning to a bust, they decided to leave their jobs, move to their second home in the Lake Tahoe area, and begin a new adventure by opening Jimmy Beans Wool. They started the business, which has been named four times to the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies in the U.S. list, with a $30,000 personal investment and have since grown it debt free to a booming operation. Laura is one of Ernst & Young's Entrepreneurial Winning Women and was invited to the White House for a forum addressing the American Jobs Act where Jimmy Beans Wool was recognized as a notable Nevada business. An innovator in the Needlearts industry, Laura has created successful national high-profile campaigns such as Stitch Red, Stitch Mountain, & Beans for Brains. She authored and launched her first installment of a three-book series drawing awareness to heart disease, Knit Red. When not knitting or working, Laura spends most of her time on the ski hill, running, playing tennis, or relaxing with Doug and their ten-year-old son, Huck. Jimmy Beans recently acquiried Namaste, della Q, and Madelinetosh—three beloved companies amongst knitters, crocheters, and makers. Jimmy Beans will continue to develop products under their patent pending Jimmy's SmartStix, plus hooks, needles, and notions. Laura joined us this week to talk about all the things she and her company are up to as well as many of the challenges that businesses and creatives face in the world of the COVID-19 virus. Please join us!
Laura's journey took her so many different places before she founded Jimmy Beans Wool. From silicon valley engineer to Phd candidate and ultimately to founding a bustling yarn shop. Today, 95% of the yarn sold is online, which was made possible thanks to Laura's computer programming experience. Laura's story is truly one of a kind and you can't help but be engaged when you hear the passion in her voice. Make sure to listen until the end to hear the powerful epiphany Laura had when sailing on her friends boat. Next episode releasing December 23rd! Stay Tuned!

Have you ever looked at a piece of knitting and wondered, “How did they figure out how to DO that with just two needles and string?” Whether you’re a picker or a thrower, those techniques had to come from somewhere, and their origins may surprise you. Rachel Roden and Heather Boyd look at knitting techniques with the eyes of designers, through the lens of archaeology: each episode travels the world to dig up and discuss a different technique, and then applies it to a clever pattern designed by Rachel. Rachel Roden and Heather Boyd look at knitting techniques with the eyes of designers, through the lens of archaeology: each episode travels the world to dig up and discuss a different technique, and then applies it to a clever pattern designed by Rachel. On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast we're talking about running a brick-and-mortar and online yarn shop with my guest, Laura Zander. Laura is the co-owner of Jimmy Beans Wool. Along with her husband Doug, she worked as software engineers during the dot-com boom in the San Francisco area. When Laura and Doug saw the boom begin turning into a bust they quit their jobs and moved to Lake Tahoe to begin a new adventure, opening a small yarn shop. Today Jimmy Beans Wool has been named one of the 5000 fastest-growing private companies in the US and Laura is one of Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneurial Winning Women. She was invited to the White House for a forum addressing the American Jobs Act where Jimmy Beans Wool was recognized as a notable Nevada business. When not knitting or working, Laura spends her time on the ski hill, running, playing tennis, or relaxing with Doug and their 10-year-old son, Huck. +++++ This episode is sponsored by Search Press. On the next edition of Fiber Hooligan (04/28/14) my guest will be Laura Zander of Jimmy Beans Wool. Originally from North Carolina, Laura earned a Master's in Poli Sci but switched gears while earning her PhD to computer programming (a favorite subject of hers). After lots of hard work, she landed a software developing job in Palo Alto, which is where Laura met her future husband, Doug! Wanting a change from the hectic pace of Silicon Valley, they moved to scenic Tahoe where Laura started to design websites for small companies. During this time, she learned to knit and loved it, which is how Laura met Lorna - owner of a local hand-dyed yarn company. She encouraged Laura to follow her true passion (knitting!) and voila! Doug and Laura emptied their savings account and Jimmy Beans Wool was born! We're going to be talking about the evolution of Jimmy Beans Wools, Sitch Red, her philosophy on business, the fiber arts industry, successes, challenges, and what's in store for the future.Laura is one of the most savvy business people in the fiber arts world. She's also someone who's courageous and generous of spirit. I’m so happy to be able to have her on the podcast. I hope you’ll tune in for what should be a great show.
