Understanding circadian rhythm, which is controlled by a pea-shaped organ inside the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, helps navigate travel for work and play.  Plane travel that crosses 3 or more time zones causes jet lag, or a feeling of being out of whack with your internal body clock. Generic travel fatigue is distinct from jet lag and is associated with tiredness and fatigue after domestic travel. Dr Tom Buckley is Associate Professor at Sydney University and is a leading expert on stress and recovery. He has written and contributed to over 110 peer reviewed academic journals, and is the co-author of the best-selling book, MatchFit, which has sold over 100,000 copies.Jon Clark (JC) is considered one of the world's leading athletic coaches and is the Physical Performance Manager for the Manly Sea Eagles, he previously worked for the English rugby union team and the Wallabies. Jon played a total of 359 Super League games and represented Great Britain in rugby league. In this episode Andrew, Dr Tom and JC discuss:1:55 How Dr Tom adapted his circadian rhythm for a recent trip to Las Vegas.2:45 Understanding circadian rhythm and why we need environmental cues to help reset it.4:50 Why teenagers and people on holidays typically disrupt their circadian rhythm.5:50 Andrew and Dr Tom's first presentation together and how they literally put 2/3 of the audience to sleep.7:25 How people lose their sense of time without environmental cues.10:50 Andrew's Studio 10 segment on jet lag.17:05 Why experience is valid when helping to minimise jet lag, and how there still isn't a lot of science around this.21:35 Why you shouldn't drink alcohol or caffeine when flying.25:50 The difference between travel fatigue and jet lag.27:00 Using plane travel to down regulate and how to minimise travel fatigue.35:20 Changing your mindset around travel to make it less stressful.41:05 Minimising the desynchronisation from jet lag when crossing time zones.42:50 "Flying West is best and East is a beast" and why shift workers find it hard to adapt.48:40 Jet lag is a sleep-wake disturbance and some of Dr Tom's tips to combat it.53:05 Strategic use of melatonin to combat jet lag.56:15 JC's 'bang for buck' approach to combatting jet lag.58:30 The struggle athletes face trying to recover from jet lag as quickly as possible.59:50 Why it's better to fly out at night and why willpower will only get you so far when combatting sleep.1:01:40 JC's tips for getting over jetlag at your destination.1:05:45 Why planning your schedule is so important before you travel.1:08:55 Embrace the travel and do something everywhere you go.1:10:00 Andrew and Dr Tom's summary with 4 key points before you travel, 4 points (plus 1) while traveling, and 4 points to follow on arrivalYou can find JC at his LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jon-clarke-1152a065/ Use Code "PIPODCAST10" to get 10% off your Lumo Coffee order:https://lumocoffee.com/Learn more about Andrew and Performance Intelligence: www.andrewmay.com Find out more about Andrew's Keynotes : https://www.andrewmay.com/keynotes/Follow Andrew May: https://www.instagram.com/andrewmay/If you enjoy the podcast, we would really appreciate you leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or Google Play. Check out our review roundtable of Hellblade 2, as we're joined by Tamoor Hussain from GameSpot, Jon Clarke from XboxEra and Stacey Henley from TheGamer.Hellblade 2 is a dull, dated game that is dragged along by its incredible presentational flair. For a game shown alongside the debut of Series X, it's not reflective of the story Xbox is trying to tell with its first party. It's a hugely dissapointing sequel. Note: Jordan's audio is a bit wonky at the start of the show but recovers later on! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Kirstin, and three sons. In 2018 at age 50, Seale had a major hemorrhagic stroke that left him partially disabled. His story of survival and adaptation, With One Hand Tied Behind My Brain: A Memoir of Life After Stroke*, was published by TCU Press in 2020. His one-handed guitar playing was featured on NPR's All Things Considered. In 2017, his memoir Monster Hike: A 100-Mile Inquiry Into the Sasquatch Mystery* was published by Anomalist Books to positive reviews. Wendy Garrett of KCMO Talk Radio in Kansas City called it “fascinating and compelling.” Nick Redfern called it “highly entertaining … a witty, amusing, and adventurous saga.” Andrew W. Griffin wrote, “There is something Walden-ish about Monster Hike that I did not anticipate when I first picked it up … as much about ourselves and our place in nature as it is about ‘monsters.' ” And Loren Coleman named it one of the 10 Best Cryptozoology Books of 2017. Dude: A Generation X Memoir* was included in the Austin American-Statesman's “Best Books of 2008.” Staggering: Life and Death on the Texas Frontier at Staggers Point (2014) chronicles the arrival of Seale's ancestors in Texas in the 1820s and 1830s and the tumultuous events and brutal conditions of the pioneering years. Seale often writes and speaks about the Baha'i Faith. In addition to numerous articles about the religion, his books The Hull, the Sail, and the Rudder (2006)*, True Freedom and the Wisdom of Virtue (2007)*, and The Tree – A Spiritual Proposition (2008)* deal extensively with Baha'i concepts. Though predominantly a nonfiction author, he has written two novellas — the afterlife comedy The Grand Merengue* and The Secret of Suranesh*, which he originally wrote and co-produced as an independent feature film. His latest book, Nuts: Down the Nueces River With One Stroke, is awaiting publication. Seale grew up in McAllen, Texas, the son of writer Jan Seale, the 2012 Texas Poet Laureate, and composer and conductor Carl Seale. Earning a bachelor's of science in radio-TV-film from The University of Texas at Austin in 1989, he returned to the Rio Grande Valley, where he started his writing career as a reporter and a columnist for the McAllen daily newspaper, The Monitor. In 1992, he returned to Austin and served 16 years as editor of the UT alumni magazine, The Alcalde. From 2011-2015 he served as speechwriter for the president of The University of Texas. Since 2015, he has been a writer and editor in the university's news, marketing, and development offices. Subject Matter Expertise: Stroke Baha'i Theology 19th century East-Central Texas History Crypto-hominology (sasquatch/bigfoot) Persuasive Writing The University of Texas at Austin Homunculus The core principle of neuroplasticity is the cells that fire together, wire together. The more you do a thing, the more connections will form in your brain to do that thing again. More connections mean more real estate gets taken up in the brain for that task. A professional basketball player will have a lot more neural connections dedicated to free throws than I will. I might have two. And one of those is dedicated to spelling it. The metaphor of the homunculus is helpful in understanding how this impacts brain injuries. The homunculus is a representation of the brain and various parts of the body. The more you use a part of the body, the more neurons it takes up in the brain. For example, the hands and tongue take up more space in the than the elbow and pinkie toe. The more time and energy you dedicate to something, the more space in your brain is dedicated to that task. For example, a homunculus of my brain would likely show a much larger segment dedicated to speaking than to throwing a baseball. One way I think about how this applies to survivors (and I may be stretching the homunculus analogy) is that a skill from the prestroke days that a survivor was an expert at may come back before a skill one had limited experience with simply because despite the damage there were simply more nerves dedicated to it. As you continue to work on a skill post stroke, a larger portion of the brain will be dedicated to it. More nerves, dendrites, and synapses will become involved. This is neuroplasticity at work. Writing Plan Avrel writes books, writes speeches,  and writes lots of other stuff, too. He also teaches writing. Avrel's recommendation for anyone wanting to write a book is to make sure you have something to say. A typical non-fiction book is going to be somewhere between 60,000 and 120,000 words. To give you an idea of what that means, a typical episode of this show is 10,000-14,000 words. To find out if you have something to say, Avrel suggests writing a long essay about your experience -- about 8,000 words. If you can't get 8,000 words from your experience, maybe you don't know what you want to say, yet. That could change in the future, or you may find another platform for your story. And once you do get to 8,000 words, you have a thing that you can shop around to magazines or to flesh out further and turn into a book. That long form document becomes the foundation that you can build the rest of your narrative on. To learn more about writing a memoir, also check out my conversation with Christine H. Lee at http://Strokecast.com/writeyourstory Guitar Playing Back in episode 22, I spoke with Craig Martin from OnlineBuske.net. Craig was a British professional guitar player working at clubs and restaurants in Spain when he had his stroke. It took one of his arms and he had to learn to use it again to get back to his beloved guitar playing.  And then it happened again. Today, he plays guitar and sings. He posts some amazing videos on OnlineBusker.Net and uses them to raise money for stroke organizations around the world. You can hear that conversation at http://Strokecast.com/OnlineBusker The reason I mention that is Avrel is also a guitarist -- a one-handed guitarist. You can hear some of his playing at the end of the episode or check out this video: https://youtu.be/R8KvuFozFQE You can see more of Avrel's guitar playing on his YouTube channel. If you play guitar, I'm sure you'll be fascinated by his tutorials, too. Caffeinated Comics William Shatner released a new album and went to space. So that was my cue to join Jon Clarke on the Caffeinated Comics podcast to talk about it. Jon and I are long-time Star Trek fans and I've been fascinated by Shatner for years. In the beginning it was because of the combination of absurd projects he'd done combined with his reported arrogance and poor treatment of other Star Trek cast members. As we've all matured and I've read his memoirs and listed to his music and watched his talk show, I became fascinated in a different way. His latest album is called simply "Bill" and explores themes of depression, loneliness, guilt, connection, death, love, and horses. Some folks experiencing their own mental health challenges may find it triggering, but it's a fascinating piece of art. You can get the CD here* or find it in the streaming service of your choice. https://youtu.be/gpbtOksAuoE To listen to the conversation Jon and I have, click here, search for Caffeinated Comics in your favorite podcast app, or just click play below. https://rmpn-media.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/cc/cc_249_101821.mp3 Hack of the Week Avrel's hack is all about playing the guitar. He's able to make the notes and chords by using hammer on and pull off techniques on the fret board. This works well on an electric guitar. You can see more of Avrel's guitar playing on his YouTube channel. He doesn't just play most of the songs. He also takes the time to demonstrate how he does it and teaches his hammer on technique. On some tracks, Avrel also uses a digital looing device to expand his playing further. Links Where do we go from here? 2-Minute Talk Tips

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 23, 2019 33:08

2-Minute Tip: Just put yourself out there   Getting past intense nerves can be challenging, but there comes a point where you just have to do it. Just acknowledge your nerves and stage fright and do it anyway. If things don’t go well, the world won’t end, and (for most of us) no one will die. So just get up on stage, nerves and all, and just do it.   How can you give yourself the best chance for success? It’s no secret — practice. Prepare and practice. The more you do that, the better you’ll be able to focus on what matters — the audience and the message.   Afterall, it’s not about you.   Post Tip Discussion: Meet Okoyomoh Egbekhuwa — or simply Huwa   “You know what’s great about hitting rock bottom? There’s only one way to go, and that’s up!” — Buster Moon, Sing   Okoyomoh Egbekhuwa — or simply Huwa — is a Chemistry student, spoken word artist, and podcaster living in Nigeria. We live in an amazing time where technology let’s us have conversations like this across the world.   Spoken Word is a performance genre where poetry meets public speaking meets story telling. Rhythm and timing are critical to success. A lot of the lessons Huwa learned as she grew as a performer will likely resonate with other speakers today.   And I have to confess my own ignorance here, This is a genre I wasn’t really familiar with before this conversation. I love getting to learn stuff on the show.   Bio   Okoyomoh Egbekhuwa, or just Huwa is a performance poet and podcaster from Nigeria, West Africa. She’s been speaking since she was eleven years old at debates and in church. She started performing as a spoken word artiste three years ago and realized how underrated it is as an art so she started up a podcast, called The Spoken World, inviting performance poets, authors and enthusiasts from around the world to share their stories as expressed in literary arts.   Recently, she’s learnt that the podcast can be so much more as it involves stories that reveal the culture, traditions and politics of individuals across the globe.   Sing   Huwa quoted the movie Sing in our conversation. It’s an animated film about animals performing in a singing competition. A lot of the stories are about dealing with nerves, being true to yourself, and getting out there to share your art.   Here’s the trailer:     The Danger of the Single Story   The Danger of the Single Story is the risk we have of falling into ignorance. In the context of our discussion, we touched on how many folks in the US and elsewhere have a limited perception of life in Africa. One narrative about the continent often dominates our perception.   Storytelling is a great way to connect with an audience. As an audience member its also important to seek out more stories from speakers and artists who have a different background. It’s not about creating an artificial debate between 2 view points — 2 or more viewpoints and be different without being in opposition to one another.   Even with my relative ignorance I think it’s safe to say that life in Nigeria is very different from life in Egypt or life in Lesotho. And it’s fair to say that life in Lagos is probably very different from life in Yola (and yes, I did have to pull up a map).   And that’s the danger of the single story or narrative. It makes it way too easy to make assumptions about a wide swath of the Earth and its people.   It’s not just about geopolitics and cultural diversity, though. As speakers, how many of us have gone into a company, or even a department within our own company, with a narrative in mind about the people there? What do you think you know about the internal culture of Amazon or Microsoft or Starbucks? These are organizations with tens of thousands of employees and contractors. The single story in our minds about organizations will impact how we prepare and speak with them, even though that story may only apply to a part of the group.   And even if it applies to most of the organization, is your audience within that organization the group that story applies to? And do you think the same story you have about a company as a whole applies equally to the legal department, the marketing department, and the C-Suite? Probably not.   And let’s talk about individuals. What is the single story you have about someone who’s had a stroke? Is it the 86 year old retiree in the nursing home? Or is it someone like Luke Perry or Sharon Stone? Or do you think about the freelance blogger and podcaster helping folks become more effective speakers in as little as 2 minutes a week?   Stories help us understand the world. They help us connect with one another and pass along history, values, lessons, inspiration and community. There’s nothing wrong with stories.   The danger is in letting a single story about our audience or millions and billions of people become the sole way we see that aspect of the world.   So seek out and listen to more stories.   Names   When Huwa and I were setting up the interview, she also emailed me an MP3 of her pronouncing her full name ( Okoyomoh Egbekhuwa) for me. This was great because it gave me an opportunity to practice listen to the correct version again and again.   If you have a name that is difficult to pronounce — or than might be difficult for someone from a different culture to pronounce, consider send a recording of it in advance to whomever may be introducing you at an event.   And if you’re the person doing the introduction, make an effort to learn to pronounce what may be for you a challenging name. You want to get it right because names are so important and they tie into so much emotional stuff. Getting a person’s name right is a sign of respect. And so I hope I did well by Huwa’s name.   Links   The Spoken World Website https://thespokenworldpodcast-com.webnode.com/ The Spoken World on Twitter https://twitter.com/spokenpodcast Huwa on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thespokenworld/ Spoken Word on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoken_word Huwa’s Email Newsletter https://mailchi.mp/07f2853d15f1/thespokenworld Spoken World Podcast on RadioPublic https://play.radiopublic.com/the-spoken-world-podcast-WJ9QMB Spoken World Podcast on PocketCasts https://pca.st/59Ai Spoken World Podcast on Apple Podcasts https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-spoken-world-podcast/id1416359054?mt=2 Spoken World Podcast on Google Podcasts https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy80Y2UzYjEwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Spoken World Podcast on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/6lpOymOxMa7vZ59gpq08tx Spoken World Podcast on CastBox https://castbox.fm/channel/id1381569 Spoken World Podcast on Overcast https://overcast.fm/itunes1416359054/the-spoken-world-podcast Spoken World Podcast on Stitcher https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/the-spoken-world-podcast Spoken World Podcast on Breaker https://www.breaker.audio/the-spoken-world-podcast Spoken World Podcast on Podbean https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/95f92-7e247/The-Spoken-World-Podcast Kerri Ruttenberg on 2-Minute Talk Tips http://2minutetalktips.com/Court Denise Vaughan on 2-Minute Talk Tips http://2MinuteTalkTips.com/Denise Hilary Billings on 2-Minute Talk Tips http://2MinuteTalkTips.com/Hilary Tim Garber on 2-Minute Talk Tips (Part 1) http://2minutetalktips.com/2017/02/28/episode-010-parallel-structure-and-tim-garber-part-1/ Tim Garber on 2-Minute Talk Tips (Part 2) http://2minutetalktips.com/2017/03/07/episode-011-record-yourself-and-tim-garber-part-2/ Jon Clarke on 2-Minute Talk Tips (Running a Panel) http://2minutetalktips.com/2017/04/18/episode-017-plan-to-punt-and-how-to-run-a-panel/ Jon Clarke on 2-Minute Talk Tips (Comedy, Advertising, and rock) http://2minutetalktips.com/2017/01/10/episode-003-skip-the-opening-joke-and-meet-jon-clarke/   Call to Action   Check out the links to Huwa’s podcast and Instagram above. Episode 116 — Comedy, Speaking, and Podcasting with Phil Johnson

2-Minute Talk Tips

2-Minute Tip: Cross the Screw It Line   We can prepare and prepare all we want, but at a certain point before a talk, we’ve done all that we can do.   The anxiety we may feel in going out on stage is less helpful on stage.   There comes a point, where we just have to say to ourselves, “Screw it.” (Or a less family friendly version of that). At that point it’s time to go execute. You’ve done everything you could to be ready. Once you get to that line, you have to trust that you’ve done enough.   And if not? Well, screw it. You’ve got a job to do.   Post Tip discussion: Meet Phil Johnson   I like talking with comedians because they are not just interesting people to chat with. The one-on-one conversations may not be the laugh-fest you might think, especially considering how many are introverts.   But I really like talking with them because comedy is such a precise craft. It involves understanding language, timing, and storytelling at a deep level.   Most public speakers understand these topics at a basic level, but we can be successful by wielding them in broad strokes — almost clumsily. Sometimes we can land our points and message like we are using a paint roller.   Comedians however, can’t use a paint roller. They have to use a fine tip touch up brush because their success relies on precise timing, wording and even emphasizing the right syllable. So there’s a lot we can learn from them.   Bio   Phil Johnson is a man who gets mistaken for a woman, but only by those not paying attention. That revelation kicks off a battle for self-awareness where comedy and music are the weapons of choice. It’s a battle that has taken Phil to such esteemed festivals as the Edinburgh Fringe and Sundance Film Festivals and the Top 8 Finals of the World Series of Comedy. “I’ve always been the guy who isn’t quite what people expect,” says Phil. Using that experience, Phil pokes holes in the medical marijuana argument, discusses being a white guy at a hip hop show (and the innocent gestures that can get him in trouble), and reveals why Hawaii isn’t the paradise we think it is.   From Shakespearean bees to redneck vampires to anthropomorphic cell phones with weight issues, Phil Johnson fills the stage with quirky characters that combine social satire with absurdist flights of fancy. Then the guitar comes out and kicks the show into an even higher gear with songs about the bright future (and dark past) of babies and what he would do if he woke up one morning as an actual woman.   On stage, Phil’s playful humor and likeable, endearing manner allow him to shake things up without antagonizing the audience. In the end we can only be who we are, try to understand others, and hope they understand us.   RA Curtain CallRoadside Attraction comes from leader Phil Johnson’s twin careers in music and comedy. “The idea here is songs that are musically interesting and challenging, but also funny, and understandable by a casual music listener,” says Johnson. It’s more eclectic than Stephen Lynch, funnier than Prince, and more palatable than Frank Zappa, though influences of all three abound.   “Afrodizzyac” is their take on Blaxploitation film themes. This one is about an international super spy (Afrodizzyac) saving the women of the world from his archenemy, Left Nut. “Brown Ring Around The Collar” is a happy tirade about the stupid people we meet every day. And “Hella Good Day” is Phil Johnson’s own musing on what would make his perfect day. “I wrote it during a really bad day and it helped cheer me up. I don’t expect people to personally relate to each lyric. But I hope it will make them think about what would make them happier.”   Two of the greatest forms of release are live music and a hearty laugh. And Roadside Attraction delivers in spades as evidenced by the audience of young and old, and every ethnicity you’ll find in the audience. Roadside Attraction play by their own rules, and doing everything they can to help you loosen up.   Phil’s Upcoming Tour Dates   Here’s where you can see Phil in June 2019.     For more appearances, check out the list on his website here.   Phil in Action   These videos highlight Phil’s comedy. Let me know in the comments below, or email me at Bill@strokecast.com You may have noticed the "Bill Suggests" menu at the top of the page. That's a collection of books and tools related to stroke recovery or public speaking that I find useful. They are also affiliate links. That means that if you click on them Amazon will send me a portion of the sales for the next 24 hours. It doesn't change your pricing or impact you in anyway. If you see a link to a product on Amazon on this site, you can assume it's an affiliate link. In Episode 004 last week, I talked about my experience on the JoCo cruise with a focus on disabilities. I actually travelled with my friend Jon Clarke this year and we recorded an episode of his podcast over the course of several days. In it, he tries to figure out just what this whole cruise thing is. You can hear this discussion here, or subscribe to Caffeinated Comics in your favorite podcast app. Shoulder Subluxation The shoulder is a mess of a joint. When hemiparesis sets in, as happened after my stroke, it means the arm (and leg) on that side of the body stop working. Since the shoulder is such a complicated amalgam of muscle, bone, tendon, and ligament, it has to work right to stay together. Subluxation is basically what happens when the shoulder starts to pull itself apart. When this happens, it's difficult to exercise, it's difficult to get the rest of the arm back on line, and it can hurt. There are two main ways to prevent shoulder subluxation and to minimize it -- support and exercise. [ Bill wearing the GivMohr sling   Support is about minimizing gravity's insidious effects. It can include: Arm rests Pillows Wheel chair trays Slings (like the GivMohr I use) Tables Kinesio Tape Ultimately the way to address it for most folks is exercise. It's why I do things like: Shoulder shrugs Shoulder rolls Shoulder blade pinches Cross body reaching ...and more Long term, strength is key. To get the strength, Get the exercise Get the fuel Get the support Get the rest Hack of the week "]   Mop Holders are great tools for holding my cane. I have about 6 of them stuck up around my apartment in the living room, the bedroom, the bathroom, and near the dining table. I can easily clip my cane to the wall so no one trips on it, and I can still grab it easily and quickly when I want it. I also lose it less often since I know where to look. Where do we go from here? Do you have a story you'd like to share on Strokecast? Email me at Bill@strokecast.com. How do you deal with sublux? Let us know in the comments below. If you enjoy Strokecast, please subscribe to the show in your favorite Podcast app. If you use a cane, check out the mop holders you can mount around your home or office. Episode 017 -- Plan to Punt and How to Run a Panel

2-Minute Talk Tips

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2017 26:37

This Week's Tip: Plan to Punt   It would be great if speakers always got the amount of time they thought they would get when they arranged to speak. If they did, they could easily cover all the content in a well designed presentation. The problem is that often, the amount of time a speaker has will change at the last minute. To effectively manage your public speaking engagements, know ahead of time what to punt.   Whether you lose time due to other speakers going over, the audience needing a break, or even an awesome question, you can be a more effective speaker if you know what to cut ahead of time. Have a plan so your audience doesn't see you scrambling. Remember, it's better to cut material and give the remaining material the attention it deserves than it is to burn through slides in a blur.   Break Comments   This week (April 17) I joined Jon Clarke on his podcast Caffeinated Comics. If you enjoy geeky and nerdy stuff, check it out. We talk about Doctor Who, Star Wars, MST3K, and more. You can learn more about Caffeinated Comics on Facebook here, and you can check out the blog and all the episodes here.   Post Tip Discussion   Spring time is the start of convention season. Whether the conferences that pop up are fan based, industry based, or corporate based, they are a great chance to get together to learn new things and meet new people. A staple of the convention is the panel discussion.   A panel discussion is a different type of public speaking. Usually 3 or more speakers or experts will be on the stage at a table, while one person hosts and moderates the panel. The job of the moderator is to keep the conversation moving, to ensure the speakers can share their perspectives, and to manage the audience Q&A. It requires a specific set of skills.   This week, Jon Clarke returns to 2 Minute Talk Tips to teach us how to moderate a panel. Jon is a freelance writer, director, and copywriter with nearly 20 years of experience in the advertising industry. His portfolio includes work for Verizon, Lenovo, Jim Beam, and some of the country’s leading pharmaceutical companies. On weekends he is Bono for Without U2, the popular Midwest U2 cover band.   As a pop culture expert, Jon has moderated panels at science fiction conventions, written a comic book, produced YouTube videos that have reached hundreds of thousands of viewers, and performed as a Stand-Up Comedian in New York. In 2013 he launched the Caffeinated Comics podcast, reporting on all the geeky activities in the Chicagoland area. He previously appeared on Episode 003 of 2 Minute Talk Tips.   You can learn more about and engage with Jon here: Twitter: @notinmybook Caffeinated Comics Podcast Blog Caffeinated Comics on Facebook Without U2   Here are 10 tips Jon shares in this interview: If the panel is about the history of a topic, be sure to pick out a few dates you can go to if you need to move the discussion along If it's a stylistic panel, and the conversation is going in only one direction, try flipping it around and asking, "What's the opposite of that?" Before the panel, make sure you check Google or Wikipedia to see what they have to say about the other panel members Remember, it's not your place to tell stories. It's your place to listen to stories Be in the moment Don't ask questions just because you wrote them. Follow the actual conversation Limit follow-ups during Q&A so the audience member doesn't become an unofficial member of the panel Wrap up the panel buy summarizing the common theme that's come out of it because a conversation has just been created. What will we take with us? Ask the guests, "How do we find you online?" Thank the audience   Call to Action   What do you think makes a great panel host? What has been your favorite panel discussion?
