Show Notes: 01:03 和谐组:Alvin Curran,Natural Wonder Beauty Concept 10:21 吓人组:Colin Stetson 13:06 爵士组:Nala Sinephro,Ben LaMar Gay Ensemble,Elliot Galvin 21:19 对照组:Panda Bear,Erika de Casier 27:52 破坏组:Moin,caroline,YHWH Nailgun 37:40 催眠组: Alessandro Cortini,more eaze & claire rousay,石桥英子,Kali Malone 44:58 优雅组:Arooj Aftab 48:00 跳舞组:Two Shell,Djrum,Zoë Mc Pherson 50:20 太极组:Laurie Anderson 《周末变奏》开通豆瓣页面,欢迎标记、点评!
What happens when music becomes so deeply personal that it reshapes the course of your life? Kali Malone joins me to explore this through the lens of The Sacrificial Code, the album that transformed her from an underground experimentalist into one of contemporary composition's most vital voices.Malone's approach to the organ exists in a liminal space—both ancient and futuristic. She explains how recording on a 16th-century instrument for the album's reissue created radically new interpretations despite the composition remaining unchanged: “The music is strictly composed, but the registration and delivery change its identity so much.” You could read it as a poetic parallel to human evolution—our core essence intact, yet constantly shifting. We dive into the tension between intuition and discipline, a defining force in her work. In an era of relentless digital noise, Malone advocates for silence as a creative act: “Remove all the layers and all the noise, and you'll slowly start to hear what you feel, what you want, what you believe in.” It's a philosophy that resonates far beyond music, speaking to anyone searching for artistic clarity. From Colorado's DIY punk scenes to Stockholm's experimental avant-garde, Malone's journey reveals the role of artistic communities in shaping sound. Her deep collaborations with Caterina Barbieri and Maria W Horn (both previous guests on Lost and Sound) highlight how musical friendships create “secret languages” that transcend time, breaking down artificial boundaries between traditions. And when asked what she'd tell her younger self? Without hesitation: “You're not crazy.” A simple but powerful affirmation for anyone carving their own path—where instinct often feels irrational but, in the end, is the most honest route forward. If you're enjoying Lost and Sound, please do subscribe and leave a rating or review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen.
American composer and organist Kali Malone popped by FRANCE 24 to tell us about her new album "All Life Long" and how composing for an organ, a brass ensemble and a choir was a process that enabled her to reconnect with her own voice. We also check out new music videos by John Cale, Soprano and Billie Eilish.
In this episode of Awake All Hours, we review a cluster of albums exploring the fringes of electronic and experimental music; more boundary pushing footwork from Jlin on 'Akoma', truly essential listening in the form of Moor Mother's staggering experimental opus 'The Great Bailout', sprawling choral, pipe organ and brass meditations from Kali Malone on 'All Life Long' and black metal/hard dance hybrids on Violent Magic Orchestra's 'DEATH RAVE'. Caterina Barbieri, Kali Malone, Moritz Von Oswald and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe discuss the role limitations play in the creative process, and whether they can be a source for creativity, if working with limitations helps sharpen one's aesthetics and define one's unique artistic voice, and whether human imagination needs limits to become limitless.Caterina Barbieri is a composer and modular synth artist whose sound draws from electronic, experimental and dance music. Her work is informed by an education in classical guitar and electro-acoustic composition at the Conservatory of Bologna, as well as the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and its famed centre for sound art, Elektronmusikstudion. She has spent a decade since her debut release, Vertical, breaking the rigid structures of electronic music and exploring how sound can induce both metaphysical and psycho-physical responses. Her most recent project, Myuthafoo, further investigates her interest in time, space, memory and emotion, and the links between them.Kali Malone is a composer and organist based in Stockholm. Her compositions are rich with harmonic texture through synthetic and acoustic instrumentation. In 2016 she co-founded the record label and concert series XKatedral, together with Maria W Horn, in Stockholm. Over the last few years she has released the critically acclaimed albums The Sacrificial Code, Living Torch, and Does Spring Hide Its Joy featuring Stephen O'Malley & Lucy Railton.Moritz Von Oswald is a dub techno pioneer producer and percussionist hailing from Berlin. He is the co-founder of production duo and record label Basic Channel. Prior to becoming one of the leading figures in electronic music in the 1990s, he played in one of the last incarnations of Palais Schaumburg. In a career spanning more than 30 years, he has worked with many legendary artists including Juan Atkins, Thomas Fehlmann, Carl Craig and Tony Allen. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is a Brooklyn-based artist, curator, composer and multi-instrumentalist. In 1997, he joined the band 90 Day Men before releasing solo projects under the moniker Lichens from 2004. He has collaborated on projects or provided sound in a featured artist capacity for such films as End of Summer, Sicario, Arrival, Last and First Men with Johann Johannsson and It Comes at Night with Brian McOmber. More recently, Robert has scored Il colpo del cane for Fulvio Risuleo, Candyman for Nia DaCosta, The Color of Care for Yance Ford and Master for Mariama Diallo.

The swedish musician Isak Hedtjärn does many things. Mainly he plays clarinett, saxophone and flute in a long range of different bands and projects - Grismask, Svenska Folkjazzkvartetten, Fire! Orchestra, Viagra Boys, Kali Malone, to name a few. But he's also a sort of jazz influencer. His Instagram @jazzisak has over 100 000 followers. And his feed is just full of videos where the sound has been replaced with jazz. In this portrait, Isak talks about his journey with the clarinett and goes deep into some of the music and memories that have shaped him as a person and a musician. "Hemma hos Jazz-Isak" is made by swedish music journalist and radio producer Mattias Wallenius for The Lake Radio. It was mixed by Daniel Säfström. The programme is in swedish.

It's our yearly tradition here at Queen Venerator as we're counting down our Top 100 Albums of 2022. To say that this was a good year in music would be a massive understatement. This was one of the best years in music in recent memory. A lot of great albums didn't make the cut, which is kind of insane considering there are 100 albums listed here. And what a 100 they are. Dance bangers from across Africa, ambient bedroom projects, a ton of hip-hop, wild free jazz, midi-infused pipe organs, fiery hardcore punk, modular synths for days, ear-shattering electronics, the smoothest desert blues, a guy rummaging around in a box for an hour, and so much more.

The next mixtape comes from musician and composer Remo Seeland, who is behind the Swiss experimental label Hallow Ground. He's presenting a selection of the label's music, partly in response to the label's recent publication, their first ever "concept-compilation" Epiphanies (Hallow Ground, 2022) released earlier in March this year. Founded by Remo Seeland, Hallow Ground was created in 2013 and has been instrumental in launching the careers of artists such as Kali Malone and FUJI||||||||||TA as well as recently releasing albums by Lawrence English, Norman Westberg, Maria W Horn and Siavash Amini, as many of Seeland's composition as well. More than a record label, Hallow ground is a platform for Music and Art that leads to ‘Visions', also acting as We act as publishers, hosts and performers. For the label's first ever compilation, the artists were commissioned to pursue a non-rational creative process in approaching the phenomenon of epiphany through sound. The results, whether long-form, short vignettes, profane and concrete sounds or spiritual and abstract pieces, perfectly encapsulate what Hallow Ground as a label has stood for since its inception in the year 2013: challenging not only conventional notions of what music is supposed to sound like but also the listeners' perception through the power of sound. The mix Seeland has prepared for us reflects on the sound of some of the main artists behind the label, and a joyous and sinuous journey into experimental introspection.
I can't tell you how excited I am for this mix. Well, actually I'm telling you right now so that first line was bullshit. Suffice it to say I love this mix. It comes from our good friends at Lost Tribe Sound, an amazing record label that is having a hell of a year. Of course, last year was pretty darn good as well. Ryan Keane, the man behind Lost Tribe Sound, has put together a mix that is interesting and varied. It's cohesive without sounding all the same. This is a wonderful collection of tunes. Here's what Ryan has to say about this mix: Rarely do I get the chance to work on creating mixes of music, but I'm definitely more inspired to do so when I can ground the mix in a solid theme or concept. When I was given the chance to create one for the highly-esteemed Low Light Mixes, I figured, it better be decent. ‘The Western Divide,' my latest mix, is a grab bag of emotions, sort of manic, nostalgic, playful, with the ever-present tinge of dread and uncertainty that really mirrors how I've been feeling about life and society as a whole lately. I partly wanted to see how bizarre the music I mixed together could get while still remaining palatable. Honing in on some pieces of music that come across as somewhat otherworldly spaghetti western sounding, I set about juxtaposing them with odd forms of jazz, electronic, hymn-like horn and organ pieces. It may have a bit of that Ennio Morricone score to some dystopian future General Hospital sort of vibe to it. I've been infatuated as of late with unique uses of horns in experimental music, it seems that most of the time horns can easily be a pitfall in many styles of music. Either from overstaying their welcome, riding too long on what I like to call the “Dad Chords,” where it just gets cheesy, or simply becoming too noodly and irritating that the song would be better off without them. So hopefully I've combined some enjoyable uses of horns into the mix that avoid these situations, but who knows, I'm quite possibly out of touch. In full disclosure, I run the label Lost Tribe Sound, so a few of the selections in the mix are from recent or upcoming albums on the label. The opening piece is from a brilliant electro-acoustic Danish trio, Skyphone, which we've have the honor of putting out two albums for this August. Kali Malone follows with her perfect use of a church organ as the ultimate drone machine. Next, a very odd find from a Spotify suggestion of all places, Jeremy Krinsley and Greg Heffernan's only album together, ‘Material Culture 9.19.15' is some left-field electronica, filled with loads of charming moments. Next, Hampshire & Foat kick in, their ‘Saint Lawrence' album from this year is an instrumental masterpiece for those into dim-lit jazz fueled folk. Sailcloth up next, also blew my mind, primarily an experimental upright bassist, the featured selection works more off of a droning horn and subdued bass notes than some of the other more pronounced tunes on the EP, ‘Close Keeping.' Then, Danny Scott Lane who's recent album on Shimmering Moods is about as perfectly refined an example as one could hope for from an experimental drone/classical album. Hoera is a mixed bag of tricks as well, bizarre combos of electronics, jazz, ambient and folk somehow fold into a very satisfying whole, definitely recommend all three of their albums. Drombeg, another tasty discovery, thanks to the Thesis label, an intense focus of melody and progression make this breed of classical well worth checking out. Working in his way slowly into the tail end of Drombeg is a new piece from Ben McElroy, a highly emotive and creative songwriter, his whole catalog is sublime. Mute Forest, a long-time favorite, lent me an exclusive song from his upcoming album for this mix, introducing “The Riven Sun.” Followed that with a rising master of primitive guitar experimentalism, Seabuckthorn, from his new album, “It Can Ashen” is a droning genius. Next up, Spheruleus with his title track from his brand new and highly engaging electro-acoustic album for my label Lost Tribe Sound. Zakè follows with some seriously delicious droning classical string and tape experiments from this year courtesy of Past Inside The Present. Kinbrae's album, ‘Landforms' from earlier this year totally destroys me, and is a great example of how to use those horns properly. After that, Federico Mosconi delivers beautiful finger-picked guitar, bathed in the most melancholic waves of static and synths one could ask for! MALK comes next with ‘Re-treat' and delivers one of the most offbeat, original albums Lost Tribe Sound has ever produced, just give in to it. The penultimate piece comes from Offthesky, who's had a hugely impressive year with two new albums that I'd consider among the best of the year. “Future Fire” provides another gorgeous example of how horns can work so beautifully in ambient music. Finally, the mix closes with one of my favorite artists of all time, Geir Sundstøl. Geir's newest genre-bending album on Hubro, is beyond genius. I've got give a special thanks to Hubro, who've finally uploaded their entire catalog to Bandcamp, making it far easier to enjoy, definitely go explore the music they put out. Hope you enjoy these tunes. Thanks for listening and having a read. Thanks, Ryan! Stockholm-based composer Ellen Arkbro is known for her work as a minimalistic explorer of experimental and ambient territories. Here she has made a mix featuring Japanese and Scandinavian music for acoustic string instruments, rhythmic electronic music, and two works for organ composed by her colleagues and dear friends Isak Edberg and Kali Malone. In her own words: "This is music that inspires me, music that brings clarity to mind. Arranged in this particular order, this collection of music reveals some of the ways in which seemingly distinct kinds of music are ultimately non-different. “ Tracklist: Isak Edberg - Lamé [Composed for the Dübenorgan in Stockholm in 2010] Yoshi Wada - Off The Wall I [Off The Wall, FMP 1985] Gabor Lazar - Crisis of Representation #4 [Crisis Of Representation, Shelter Press 2017] Kim Myhr - Sleep Nothing, Eat Nothing [All Your Limbs Singing, Sofa 2014] Mark Fell - Multistability 3 [Multistability, Raster-Noton 2010] Henry Flynt - Celestial Power [You Are My Everlovin / Celestial Power, Edition Hundertmark 1986] Kim Myhr - Harbor me [All Your Limbs Singing, Sofa 2014] Mamoru Fujieda - The Third Collection, Pattern IX [Patterns of Plant, Tzadik 1997] David Stackenäs - Morioka [Bricks, Clean Feed 2017] Kali Malone - Glory Canon III [Organ Dirges 2016-2017]
