In this episode of A Common Concern: The Climate Justice Podcast, Kate Cook discusses workers' rights and climate change with Kalina Arabadjieva of the European Trade Union Institute. From the principles and standards of the International Labour Organisation to the provisions of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, from the rules of the EU Green Deal to the three pillars of the Aarhus Convention, there are many points of intersection between international labour law and climate law. Kate and Kalina discuss the potential for mutual reinforcement in relation to the protection of workers both from the direct impacts of climate change, including heat stress, and in relation to securing a just transition for the workforce in the context of decarbonization. Is closer integration between workers' rights and climate law a key way to secure climate justice in the face of colossal challenges across the world?
In A Common Concern, the Climate Justice Podcast we will be looking at the ways in which the law can, or might, address the urgent threat posed by climate change. We will look at the protection of the rights of those most impacted, including displaced people, workers and those most vulnerable due to current levels of poverty. We will also consider legal developments in other jurisdictions around the world, starting with the United States. Throughout the series, we will try to answer one key question, what role can the law play in closing the gap between where we are and where we need to get to, to avoid global environmental destruction and catastrophic loss of life and wellbeing. In that regard, we will also look at the legal implications of the science informing our understanding of climate change, bearing in mind that while governments may come and go, the laws of physics will continue to govern our world. In this first episode, Kate Cook is joined by Dr. Erik Mackie and Dr. Luke Kemp. Together, we will discuss the science behind climate tipping points and cascade risks.

It was at an early age that Kate Cook knew her passion in life was art. By picking up commission pieces in high school, Kate was able to purchase her first car, a 1966 Jeepster Commando that she worked on with her father and brother. It would be that Jeep that inspired her to combine her two loves into an artistic technique she calls “pinstripe illustration”. While she started her career in watercolor, ink and oil paint, she decided to meld the traditional methods of painting with versatile enamel car paint. Her latest series of illustrator paintings, entitled “She's been everywhere, man!” are inspired by nostalgic Americana with a colorful contemporary twist focusing on classic cars, travel, and the timeless female figure. Kate's husband and biggest cheerleader Morgan encouraged her to take the leap of faith and paint full time. It's because of his support, Kate is able to live her dream, one illustration at a time through her studio Asphalt Canvas Custom Art. Our biggest takeaway in this latest edition of Women Shifting Gears Driven by Hemmings is that anything is possible when you have love and support around you.

I can't recommend measuring your marketing efforts rigorously and regularly highly enough. There is so much data that is easily available for us to access and review so that we can make better decisions about our marketing – it's just a matter of knowing what metrics to look for and where to look! Kate Cook; otherwise known as the ‘marketing attribution gal' is a marketer who specialises purely in marketing measurement. In this episode we talk about the scope of marketing measurement, and the challenges and the opportunities that analysing data can bring to a small business. This discussion will give you a good idea of what we are trying to achieve by measuring your marketing and some of the reasons that you should absolutely incorporate this into your small business operations. In fact; Kate recommends that you adopt documenting marketing measurement as seriously as you document your monthly accounting numbers. I couldn't agree with this more! We talk about how you can keep track of short term results that are driven by your marketing as well as how you can track longer term objectives such as marketing that is designed to build your brand. What are the eating strategies that can help you upgrade your health and energy? In part two of my interview with corporate wellness expert Kate Cook, we look into strategic eating in more detail and the importance of balancing your blood sugar and knowing how that works. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Blood sugar management Ancel Keys and his Seven Countries Study Inflammation Time-restricted eating Key Takeaways: Whether you want to be a vegan or a Paleo or a keto or whatever, getting healthy all starts with blood sugar control. That is your structured strategy. Balancing your blood sugar has to do with how you control your insulin, and that is how much sugar you have at any one time in your blood. Time-restricted eating doesn’t work quite so well for women as it does for men. Upgrading your health and energy is about finding the type of diet that you can sustain, that is both healthy and balanced. Action Steps: Focus on balancing your blood sugar levels. Avoid sweet, fluffy, and white food. Aim for thick, 5% protein, and fat stuff. Control your body’s inflammation. If you want to do time-restricted eating, make sure that it fits with the rhythm of your household and the demands of your life. Tune into your body and ask yourself: When you consume something, how does it make you feel? Do you feel energized consistently or do you have a big crash afterward? Does it feel like your body is enjoying this or does it feel like it’s fighting it? Kate said: “Upgrading your own energy, there’s no shame in that. So you can give that helping hand to everybody else and really shine in your community... Wherever you want to shine, this is the start.” “On some of these strategies you have to be a little careful that you’re not so militant… Be kind to yourself and be sensitive to how you feel. And if it doesn’t suit you, don’t crack on with something that isn’t serving you.” Thanks for listening! How can you upgrade your health and energy? Corporate wellness expert and nutritional therapist Kate Cook dives into this topic with her new book, Positive Nutrition, and shares her insights into how strategic eating can help us achieve our health and energy goals. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Kate’s principles regarding diet and nutrition The functional medicine model of nutrition How nutritional science can sometimes get things wrong Personalisation with regards to eating The relationship between food, genetics, and epigenetics Key Takeaways: Nutrition is a huge foundation on how you can take your health into your own hands. The food that you eat gives you a competitive edge in life and helps you not to squander your potentials. Food has become rather tribal these days, with people being keto or paleo or vegan or whatever. However, we actually need to unify how we eat much more sensibly and instinctively and get back to the basic truths about food and nutrition. Food and nutrition not only help you reach your full potential but allow you to help other people achieve theirs as well. Nutritional science has obviously been really key to people’s health and wellbeing and there’s been some absolutely amazing progression. But sometimes it’s less about listening to the experts and more about thinking what are the basics of food and what makes sense. Action Steps: Be more holistic in how you look at food and nutrition Consider getting a genetic test. Kate said: “It is a truth universally unacknowledged that most people don’t make the connection between what they eat and how they feel.” “Food is very much about a celebration of connection. It’s about community. It’s about all sorts of other things besides it just being the molecules. So I think we’ve all got to watch how it doesn’t become some kind of almost religious philosophy.” Thanks for listening!
