The market for dietary supplements to enhance sports performance has exploded in recent years. In fact, you may have tried some of these supplements yourself to improve your workouts. Many common supplements, like caffeine, have been studied in the context of immediate performance enhancement, and are used with that goal in mind. But the effect of chronic supplementation, particularly in endurance training, is not as well understood. Furthermore, it is not as clear how performance-enhancing supplements might influence the adaptive response to exercise training. Training-induced adaptations are the product of repeated stimuli from exercise sessions, as well as accumulated changes in gene expression, which gradually result in adaptive changes like greater muscle mass as well as more efficient muscle contractions. Dietary intake of certain substances can, in theory, affect training adaptations in a couple different ways. They can achieve this by simply increasing the exercise stimulus from a single training bout - basically just enabling an athlete to train longer or harder, or reducing perceived exertion. But they may also be able to affect gains in endurance by altering cellular responses to exercise-induced stress. For instance, supplements like buffering agents and antioxidants may modify the cellular signaling response to training by affecting acid-base balance, reactive oxygen species signaling, or redox status. Importantly, these changes in cell signaling may not be universally beneficial from the standpoint of adaptation. This raises a number of interesting questions. How significant is the impact of these supplements from a practical standpoint? And how do we separate acute effects on training duration and intensity from chronic effects on training adaptations? Is it possible that a supplement could simultaneously make it easier for an athlete to exercise hard, but also have effects on cellular signaling that actually have a long-term negative impact on the adaptive response to training? On this episode of humanOS Radio, Dan welcomes Jeff Rothschild to the show. Jeff is a Registered Dietitian with a Master's in Nutrition Science, and is a Board-Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). He has worked with an impressive array of athletes - his clients include multiple Olympians, State Champions, collegiate All-Americans, and professional tennis players, as well as recreational athletes and folks who are trying to complete their first triathlon. Jeff recently wrote a fascinating review exploring the impact of dietary supplements on adaptations to endurance training. He came on the show to discuss his findings, and what they might mean for athletes and generally active people who want to maximize the time and effort that they dedicate to their training. To learn more about how various nutritional supplements might affect your training - both short and long term - check out the interview!

How I pre-select to fight appetite. Recipes. Patterns.VICE uploaded “Mac & Cheese for 17 years” - “I've tried celery. I threw that shit out instantly” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1TWvXwgKr0 .Crazy case of some nervosa, definitely not anorexia nervosa though.Anyways, it's ABCD - no single right answer! Nutritional Needs Assessment uncovers it:● Anthropometric (i.e. BMI %%-s, fat loss progress, )● Biochemical (nutrient deficiencies, cholesterol level, OGTT for Diabetes)● Clinical (skin state, etc.)● Dietary (ecological / social status, certain food restrictions due to religion, food log, habits)As to athletes… aspiring vs. amateur, let's be real.● Eliud Kipchoge - Maurten hydrogel 2018, 2019. By the way there's a study that it's not really working as it's supposed to?.. Well, it works for Eliud anyways.● Chris Froome - haribo gummy candies in Giro D'Italia 2018 while losing 1 kg over 5 days.So did Peter Sagan. For us, ex-hunters with 10,000-s of years of experience, - everything edible is great in moderation. There are lots of diets that endurance athletes follow from Vegan, to Paleo to HCLF to Full Keto. What do you believe is the ideal diet for endurance sportsSuccessful event is a factor of preparation, mental health, in-race nutrition, luck (i.e. weather). Successful result is equivalent to “high performance”. High performance usually means lower mass. There's a new movie about vegan diet that throws in a bunch of claims by the way:● “Roman gladiators didn't eat meat” - that's an anecdote from archaeologist, Andrew Curry, in Archaelogoly Magazine 2008: Karl Grossschmidt of Medical University of Vienna, Vienna (MedUni Vienna). Gladiators, it seems, were fat. Consuming a lot of simple carbohydrates, such as barley, and legumes, like beans, was designed for survival in the arena. Packing in the carbs also packed on the pounds. "Gladiators needed subcutaneous fat," Grossschmidt explains. "A fat cushion protects you from cut wounds and shields nerves and blood vessels in a fight." Not only would a lean gladiator have been dead meat, he would have made for a bad show. Surface wounds "look more spectacular," says Grossschmidt. "If I get wounded but just in the fatty layer, I can fight on," he adds. "It doesn't hurt much, and it looks great for the spectators."● Claim “on par”. Plants could be an extremely good source of protein if all 9 essential amino acids + Nitrogen containing amino acids, but to say that it is on par with animal protein in terms of minerals like iron, vitamins like creatine, and synthesis availability (which are incredibly important for high performing athletes) is an outright BS.For vegetarians, it is important to know that Protein Quality = Amino Acid Composition + Digestibility (soy is best, up to 90% where 100% is meat)Beef is less than egg whiteI eat eggs and drink milk = top PQ food :-) therefore, are you ovo-lacto-vegetarian :-)Complementary: legumes + grains (different amino-acids).Biological Value = (nitrogen retained, g / nitrogen absorbed, g) * 100Higher = better matchLower = lower matchFAT content in meat is higher, yes. There are two types of fat absorption: for saturated fat it's through lymphatic system (chylomicrons, leading to LDL) and through intestine walls then venes and to liver (for unsat / polyunsat). Former flies past the adipose tissue reserves through lymphatic system, resulting in subcutaneous fat refills uncontrolled. Latter is controllable but again, there are two vehicles that can be determined using biochemical blood test -- High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) GOOD lipoprotein -- very small size, Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) BAD as can potentially clog the arterias.LCHFRothschild JA, Bishop DJ, Effects of Dietary Supplements on Adaptations to Endurance Training, Sports Med. 2019 Sep 17, DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s40279-019-01185-8 (shout out, he's in New Zealand doing his PhD)Over the past 20 years, research suggested that strategically reducing carbohydrate (CHO) availability during an athlete's training can modify the metabolic responses in lieu of simply maintaining a high CHO diet. Several methods have been explored to manipulate CHO availability and include: Low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) diets, performing two-a-day training without glycogen restoration between sessions, and a “sleep-low” approachArguments in favor of trying to increase fat-burning capacity focus around the ability to utilize the large stores of endogenous lipids found even in very lean athletes, while preserving the relatively limited supply of muscle and liver glycogen. Yet despite this theoretical advantage, measurable performance improvements from deliberately increasing fat burning capacity have been elusive. Each of these methods can confer beneficial metabolic adaptations for the endurance athlete including increases in mitochondrial enzyme activity, mitochondrial content, and rates of fat oxidation, yet data showing a direct performance benefit is still unclear.Do you believe in strict macros or simply calories in calories outThey all converge to one another, if you do it right. Estimated Energy Requirements (EER) is key here, and think about 7 days sliding windos.Another way to think about food is through the portions count of a particular quality. Kind of Matt Fidzgerald's approach. Know your EER + tweak PAL. Think last 7 days window. Control thirst-induced hunger. Eat breakfast like a pro.How do you believe the diet differs for each endurance sportEverywhere it's Gravity. Gravity is mass. Mass also non-linear to skin area, there's a formula to that. Thus the more mass - the more heat-induced stress from energy production, but not proportionally enough evaporation. Fat % reduction vs. temperature range vs. VO2max. Same stuff. What is your philosophy on nutrition during raceDepends on the race. Drink by thirst, do not fall below, do Protein. What is your philosophy on nutrition in recoverySleep. And it's cool :-) But, low protein digestibility according to FAO/OMS (42) standards. 79.80%Raw seed only 34% It looks like grinding would help protein digestion of raw seed. This treatment improve digestibility that could happen due to the fact that grinding divide and expose all seed component allowing enzymes actions. So much of the discussion on nutrition is about the food itself. What's discussed far less regularly is the impact of food timing, fasting periods, and meal skipping on the same outcomes we're interested in when we talk about saturated fat, carbs, fiber, etc. It turns out, there is a whole lot to discuss here that matters for human health. In this episode, Dan speaks with two topic experts - both with several peer-reviewed scientific publications related to the subjects discussed in the episode - and both of whom are collaborators on humanOS.me. Enjoy the conversation.

When Facebook’s founding engineer and Vanderbilt alumnus, Jeff Rothschild, first visited the fledgling company in 2005 at the behest of a venture capital firm, he was wary of the social media space in general and didn’t expect to stay more than two weeks. But then “I got to meet Mark (Zuckerberg) and Dustin Moskovitz and the other early members of the team and really fell in love with the vision they had for Facebook,” Rothschild told Vanderbilt University Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos in an interview for his latest podcast, The Zeppos Report. Rothschild, who earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1977 and a master’s in computer science in 1979, told Zeppos that the Facebook of today closely resembles the original vision of connecting families and friends that the team laid out when it first started. “All of the people who joined Facebook in the early days cared about the mission of the company,” said Rothschild, who served as vice president of Infrastructure Software at Facebook from 2005 until 2015. “Very few of them thought, ‘I’m joining a hot startup.’” In addition to sharing his perspective on what made Facebook successful where other competitors failed, Rothschild talks to Zeppos about the benefits of “collateral knowledge,” as well as data analytics and automation coming together to usher in a new era of augmented intelligence. Before Facebook, Rothschild co-founded Veritas Software. He continues to serve as a consulting partner at the venture capital firm Accel Partners. As of July 1, 2017, he will begin a term as vice chairman of the Vanderbilt Board of Trust. In December 2016, Rothschild and his wife, Marieke, made a $20 million gift through a donor-advised fund to support the development of Vanderbilt’s residential colleges program, College Halls. Rothschild joined Zeppos on campus for the interview, which took place on April 21, 2017. The podcast is available on SoundCloud, Stitcher, Google Play, iTunes, YouTube and The Zeppos Report website. Coach and exercise physiologist Dr Mike T. Nelson pulled me to one side recently after seeing the results of my little experiment with a ketone ester supplement. In this interview, you’ll learn about why Dr. Mike thinks we should exercise caution before regularly simultaneously raising blood glucose and ketones. We also talk about why metabolic flexibility, not ketosis, should be the goal for most endurance athletes. Problems with impaired fat use: From  Nelson, Michael T., George R. Biltz, and Donald R. Dengel. "Repeatability of Respiratory Exchange Ratio Time Series Analysis." The Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research 29.9 (2015): 2550-2558. "Goedecke et al. (12) showed a very large interindividual variability in resting RER from 0.72 up to 0.93 that even persisted during exercise of increasing intensity. This corresponded to a relative rate of fat oxidation that ranged from 23 to 93%. This large interindividual variability in RER from 0.83 to 0.95 was also demonstrated by Helge et al. (16) during low-intensity steady-state exercise. This was quite similar to what we observed with a range of RER from 0.82 to 0.97.” (Nelson, MT, et al. 2015). Goedecke, Julia H., et al. "Determinants of the variability in respiratory exchange ratio at rest and during exercise in trained athletes." American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology And Metabolism 279.6 (2000): E1325-E1334. Helge, Jørn W., et al. "Interrelationships between muscle fibre type, substrate oxidation and body fat." International journal of obesity 23.9 (1999): 986-991 Problems with impaired carb use: Research has shown that those are on a very low carb diet for prolonged periods of time demonstrate a reduced ability to fully use them during exercise (Burke, LM, et al.; Stellingwerf T. et al). Burke, Louise M., et al. "Effect of fat adaptation and carbohydrate restoration on metabolism and performance during prolonged cycling." Journal of Applied Physiology 89.6 (2000): 2413-2421. Stellingwerff, Trent, et al. "Decreased PDH activation and glycogenolysis during exercise following fat adaptation with carbohydrate restoration." American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism 290.2 (2006): E380-E388. Finally, we discuss the potential interference effect of endurance exercise on strength training. Context matters! Only elite athletes probably need to worry about this, and at least one study has shown untrained women can use either order and get similar responses. Also, 5-10x 2 minute intervals at 120-150% of LT (HIIT) and 15-30 minute continuous cycling at 80-100% of LT equally interfere with the adaptations to resistance training. So it’s not the intensity, more the total volume, that’s the problem. [00:46:22] Prioritising strength in the offseason. [00:48:40] Kiteboarding. [00:49:55] Fortaleza. [00:51:06] Mike's email.
