61,7-2, SHOW  NOTES & COPYRIGHTS,  (6/23/2022) Today is all about God's Rhyme, poems from the first book, God's Rhyme first published in 2015. The first part of the book has poems I wrote in the 1970s and 80s for The Jesus Poems.  I submitted the manuscript for publishing in 1983.  It was accepted for publishing, but I could not afford it at the time.   The introduction: “The Jesus Poems” We all know that Jesus  Is the Son of God & the Holy Spirit completes the Trinity From the beginning of time & even before, Jesus, as God, with the Holy Spirit created the earth & all we know as good. So, though not always mentioned as Jesus, this book is dedicated to Him to whom we relate in human form. May this glorify His Holy Name. & may it also bless you as He has blessed me in knowing Him better. An experience of growth,  which even now continues, it, therefore, is offered incomplete. Reflection: In 1978 my wife, Mary Lou, and I attended a Marriage Encounter weekend, a retreat to make good marriages better.  We were led through the weekend by two couples and a priest.  It was a weekend filled with revelations about each other, and others and God.  The priest whose name was Larry Dunn was a Jesus filled man.  As we found out that weekend and for many years to follow, to be with Larry was to be with Jesus.  Larry was the priest at Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission in our home town.  And that is where we started attending church regularly. Many of the poems from "In the Beginning" were written during those years we attended Guadalupe.  It was a time and place where Jesus was celebrated; where everyone was hugged during the sign of peace; and the music, so full of joy, got you through the week. Discussion: This was the beginning of my journey which has taken many twists and turns and led to the following poem also in God's Rhyme MY FRIEND JESUS (pg. 5) Take my hand  as we walk this land, feel the sand as time drifts away, hear what I say, just be what you may with my friend Jesus. A little boy, a baby girl; sometimes the days like a waterfall swirl until I feel the sun's rays & I know it's the Son,  Who, tho blinded to some, is Who I will follow. A walk thru a field & I find I must yield, give of myself, die to my wants. I opened the door & found Him waiting there, wanting no more than that breath of fresh air. I found the way. As people had said, it's not what you say or the thoughts in your head. It's not just the grace of an evening meal. It's something you always feel, something that starts deep in you heart. Take my hand & walk with me; There is so much to be. Together we can stand, not just the two of us, because we are three with our friend Jesus. Discussion: Jesus became approachable to me in at this time in my life.  Not only was he part of the Holy Trinity, he was a friend, someone I could talk to freely.  My prayers and worship revolved around Jesus as my Savior. MY SWEET JESUS (pg. 10) Oh Jesus, sweet Jesus, I pray that when you lay me down for my final rest it is in Your arms, I pray. But for now, let me live such that in all I do in my life is to give as You have to me. In this life I am living may I pass on to others the way of gentle forgiving You have given to me. May the weakness  in this life give way to meekness everlasting with You. Living here today, maybe gone tomorrow, Your word shows me the way, the path I must follow. Reflection: During a second Marriage Encounter weekend I remember sitting in the auditorium of an old convent surrounded by other couples when suddenly I felt a peace within my body that I had never...

Copyright 2019 1.     Finding the true Jesus w/ Larry Dunn. From Episcopal church to Catholic Church to led by God elsewhere. 2.     Why poetry. I have written since high school. Read discussion with Canadian film make at first book signing. Poetry, why would one read poetry? Maybe this will help. At a book signing for “God's Rhyme” I had a discussion with a filmmaker from Canada (yes, Canada is across the river from Port Huron) about the first sentence on the back cover of the book, “Life is a continuous poem.” He did not understand that. I guess for him life was seen through the view of a camera lens. So for him life is a continuous movie.  For me there is a poem in a weed, in a child, a storm, joy, sorrow and especially in the goodness of God, in the joy of our salvation, in the sorrow that lead to our salvation. I'm not sure that everything we experience about God can be seen through our eyes. I do know that all that God has for us can be seen through our hearts and it is in our hearts that poetry is born, where it is seen, where it lives and thrives. So why poetry, because it is how I see who I am through the great I AM. Poetry is a series of short chapters that allows the reader to follow the poet's journey with, let's face it, fewer words. 3.     MOTHER'S DAY  On this day we pray With sisters and brothers. We pray for our mothers, Who gave all they could So hopefully we would Know right from wrong While singing us a song; A song of love And winter gloves, A song of warm summer days And early morning haze. They nurtured our growth As if having taken an oath To protect us from harm. Around their necks hangs a charm, That of their children's love Showered down from Heaven above.   Dear Lord our prayer today Is that our mothers may Rejoice in us Following Jesus.   From Podcast dated 5/9/2021 FOR YOU TWO   Thank you Jesus for loving me,             for being able to see             that I am more             than I think I can be.   When the world             seems to swirl around             & sounds are blurred, somehow your love is heard.   You've given me a life;             a loving wife,             the sweet joys of a baby girl             & a little boy.   I have been blessed. I just need to take time...

It may sound dry, but the economic concepts of gain and loss, risk and reward shape good decision making in the backcountry. So, what's the goal of forecasting: accuracy or outcomes? How do you impact decision making--not to mention your reputation--with forecasts that overly cautious or not cautious enough? And how do you minimize risk when out on a tour?

Bobby Watson has a reputation for bringing a solid foundation to any rhythm section, but he particularly shines in 'Rufus', a band he joined forces with in early 1974. BW has been a major contributor in helping create the 'Rufus' sound, not only with his playing, but also as a producer & songwriter on all of the Rufus albums from 1974' til present. Rufus released 11 albums from 1974-1983. Rufus and Chaka Khan also won many awards including 2 Grammys and 10 Gold and Platinum records. His style of bass playing can be heard not only on Rufus, but on other artist's hits as the Pointer Sister’s "Jumping Jack Flash", Michael Jackson's "Rock with You" & Billy Preston's "Nothing from Nothing". Bobby produced four albums with Rene & Angela from 1979-85 the last of which went Gold (Street Called Desire). Bobby also produced Plush featuring Seidah Garrett, and Janet Jackson's debut album titled "Janet". Bobby resided in Japan from 1985-1995, and took part in countless productions, recordings and tours. Back to Los Angeles in 1995 joined up with Steve Harvey. Bobby's symbiotic relationship with Steve has resulted in over 100 songs being written together, as well as numerous recording sessions playing both bass & guitar for artists Brigette McWilliams, Frank McCombs, Cece Winans, The Temptations, N'Dambi, Ledisi & Rachelle Farrell. Shorty thereafter Bobby replaced "Verdine White" in a band consisting of 90% of original EWF members called "The LA All Stars". In 1998 Bobby toured with Chaka Khan, Larry Graham and Prince, playing all over Europe.Bobby also took part in a Rufus & Chaka Khan Reunion Tour in 2001 as opening act for Earth Wind & Fire. Unfortunately, the tour was cut short by 9/11. In 2002 Bobby joined Earth Wind & Fire original members Sheldon Reynolds, Morris Pleasure, Larry Dunn, Johnny Graham and Kenny Olson (Kid Rock) for a concert celebrating Jimi Hendrix's (would be) 60th Birthday at the EMP Museum in Seattle.

Thanks to the vagaries of jet-lag, I'm penning this little missive from Okinawa where it's hotter than July and I'm spending time with my daughter which fills me with glee. It's been a very hectic few days/weeks and I'm glad to be having a break from music for at least a wee while, but of course I'm coming back to London via Tokyo and I'm relishing the opportunity to be playing at my favourite club once again. I'm a fan of Shibuya's The Room not just because the proprietor, Shuya Okino, is a great friend, but because it really is the best little club in the world, with little being the operative word! So before bailing out for a break I managed to gather my resources for a tribute to George Duke, who sadly passed away on August 5th. I contemplated for a while whether this selection should take up the whole two hours, or just be a section of the show. However on reflection George Duke has touched me so deeply with some of his music over the years that really it was a no-brainer; yet a tribute to George could easily have been two hours of fusion and synth solos with little to distinguish between one track and the next. So hopefully I've avoided that trap whilst still dishing up plenty of Duke flying free on his ARP Odyssey! George Duke was perhaps a reluctant fusioneer, and if it wasn't for the influence of the likes of Frank Zappa and Flora Purim he might never have embraced electronic keyboards with such gusto. In fact he once recounted how he was horrified on one occasion in his early career when he turned up for a gig with Jean Luc Ponty to find there was no real piano just a Fender Rhodes. It was an important gig, with many influential peers in attendance, suffice to say that his performance on electric piano on that occasion set him off on that "electric jazz" road, and he barely paused to look back until the latter days of his recording career when his prowess on the piano once again came to the fore. However as a fully fledged member of a coterie of musicians who really defined the sound of fusion in the early seventies, Duke was a vital force in those experimental, pioneering days and it could easily be argued,(indeed I might even insist!) that his work with Flora Purim and AIrto during this period produced some of the most definitive and enduring music of the era. The fluidity of the Brazilian rhythmic feel and the participation of the likes of Joe Henderson in those recordings stopped the music from keeling over into the kind of hollow bombast that is sometimes the trademark of the kind of fusion which might also be described as Jazz-Rock. To anyone who really listens to Duke's playing they'll know that it is something of a misnomer to apply a term like Jazz-Rock to his work, as his roots are definitely deep within the blues and gospel traditions that informed most jazzers growing up in the sixties, and overall his music is just too soulful to fit such an epithet. However I've heard it said of Duke and really it's just lazy journalism and ignorance that informs such opinions. George Duke met Airto and Flora Purim whilst with Cannonbal Adderley's band, and was inspired by a trip to Brazil with that ensemble. The resulting album "The Happy People",produced by David Axelrod, is a major disappointment , awful sonically and pretty incoherent musically it's an important record only in that it marks the inception of their relationship that would go on to bloom on albums like Flora's "Stories To Tell", "Moon Dreams" and "That's What She Said", and in turn Flora and Airto would guest on Duke's early solo recordings and be a vital part of his homage "A Brazilian Love Affair", when Duke eventually returned to Brazil to make his own record there and record with the artist whose music had so affected him on his first visit, Milton Nascimento. However that Brazilian influence kept bubbling through Duke's music over the years and though he admitted to also being influenced by Earth Wind and Fire in the late seventies, they themselves had also taken on that same influence. So in some ways it's better to picture their trajectories in parallel as they both found great ways to translate the harmonic and rhythmic wellspring of Brazil into their music. Perhaps there's some poetic justice in the fact that eventually George Duke would produce tunes written by Earth Wind And Fire's keyboard maestro Larry Dunn, (Dee Dee Bridgewater's version of "Tequila Mockingbird" and Dianne Reeves "Sky Islands") such are the similarities between them. Ironically Duke's biggest hit with Afro American audiences, "Dukey Stick" was the kind of funk workout his consummate band were more than capable of with the mighty Ndugu behind the kit, but it had none of the harmonic sophistication or soulful splendour that is the essence of his music. So here's two hours of George Duke that delves deeply into his lyrical piano playing and his distinctive voice on solo synthesiser as well as his role as producer, arranger and collaborator, a composer of rare power and a musician of infinite grace. 1. George Duke - My Soul 2. The Third Wave - Maiden Voyage 3. George Duke - Jeanine 4. Flora Purim - Casa Forte 5. George Duke - Diamonds 6. Miles Davis - Backyard Ritual 7. George Duke - Let Your Love Shine 8. George Duke - Say That You Will 9. George Duke - Malibu 10. George Duke - Brazilian Sugar 11. George Duke - The Way I Feel 12. George Duke - Dream Weaver 13. George Duke - Feels So Good 14 George Duke - Stones Of Orion 15. George Duke - Feel 16. George Duke - Someday 17. George Duke - Omi (Fresh Water) 18. Dianne Reeves - Sky Islands 19. My pod partner in crime Kendall Jane and I welcome Lash and Josh into the studio to talk about the Pine Ridge Toy Drive, now in its 5th year. It's the first Christmas themed show of the year and it's a very special one. Read below to learn more about this toy drive and how you can help make some amazing kids very happy...The Toy Drive for Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is back! Since 2003, Omaha rockabilly musician Larry Dunn has organized a toy drive for the children of the Porcupine District of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. According to the 2000 census, Pine Ridge’s Lakota Sioux community is one of the most poverty stricken communities in the United States. The children of the reservation are desperately in need of some sunshine and cheer, especially during a time of cold, harsh winds and immense desolation like winters on the reservation can be. The majority of gifts for the children are collected at benefit concerts put on by Omaha-area musicians.
