Pax et Bonum! "Stories Jesus Told" is one of our favorite series, and we're back with the Parable of the Mustard Seed from the Book of Matthew, Chapter 13, verses 31-35. In this episode, Father Anthony guides us to understand that even the smallest action done out of love for God is significant in His eyes. "Another parable he proposed unto them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. Which is the least indeed of all seeds; but when it is grown up, it is greater than all herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come, and dwell in the branches thereof. Another parable he spoke to them: The kingdom of heaven is like to leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, until the whole was leavened. All these things Jesus spoke in parables to the multitudes: and without parables he did not speak to them. That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world." Pax et Bonum! On October 4th, we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Holy Father, Saint Francis of Assisi. As Franciscans, we have much to admire and love about St. Francis. With this in mind, we have chosen to delve into the profound teachings of 'The Three Ways of Perfection', a topic that has captivated us and we believe will inspire you as well. 1. The Purgative Way is the purifying of the soul in view of attaining an intimate union with God. 2. The Illuminative Way is the stage of the spiritual life that aims for the imitation of Christ through the positive exercise of Christian virtues. 3. The Unitive Way is characterized by three conditions: 1) a great purity of heart, 2) a great mastery over self, and 3) a constant need to think about God. Points of Discussion: 1. The Purgative Way is shown by his conversion and being the Church builder. 2. The Illuminative Way is shown by the Rule – living according to the Gospels. 3. The Unitive Way is exemplified by Greccio – Nativity Scene, Alverna – Stigmata, and Portiuncula – Holy Death. Deo Gratias!

This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. A Song of Praise(Benedictus es, Domine Song of the Three Young Men, 29-34)Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers; * you are worthy of praise; glory to you.Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name; * we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; * on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; * we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.Glory to you, beholding the depths; * in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; * we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever. The CreedI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws.We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.Officiant: Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen. The Lord's PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Invitatory & PsalmsOfficiant: O God, make speed to save us. People: O Lord, make haste to help us. Officiant & People: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. O Gracious Light Phos hilaronO gracious Light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed! Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds. Psalm 92 Bonum est confiteri1It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord, *and to sing praises to your Name, O Most High;2To tell of your loving-kindness early in the morning *and of your faithfulness in the night season;3On the psaltery, and on the lyre, *and to the melody of the harp.4For you have made me glad by your acts, O Lord; *and I shout for joy because of the works of your hands.5Lord, how great are your works! *your thoughts are very deep.6The dullard does not know, nor does the fool understand, *that though the wicked grow like weeds, and all the workers of iniquity flourish,7They flourish only to be destroyed for ever; *but you, O Lord, are exalted for evermore.8For lo, your enemies, O Lord,lo, your enemies shall perish, *and all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.9But my horn you have exalted like the horns of wild bulls; *I am anointed with fresh oil.10My eyes also gloat over my enemies, *and my ears rejoice to hear the doom of the wicked who rise up against me.11The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, *and shall spread abroad like a cedar of Lebanon.12Those who are planted in the house of the Lord *shall flourish in the courts of our God;13They shall still bear fruit in old age; *they shall be green and succulent;14That they may show how upright the Lord is, *my Rock, in whom there is no fault. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The LessonsJeremiah 23:16-22 English Standard Version16 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. 17 They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, ‘It shall be well with you'; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.'”18 For who among them has stood in the council of the Lord    to see and to hear his word,    or who has paid attention to his word and listened?19 Behold, the storm of the Lord!    Wrath has gone forth,a whirling tempest;    it will burst upon the head of the wicked.20 The anger of the Lord will not turn back    until he has executed and accomplished    the intents of his heart. In the latter days you will understand it clearly.21 “I did not send the prophets,    yet they ran;I did not speak to them,    yet they prophesied.22 But if they had stood in my council,    then they would have proclaimed my words to my people, and they would have turned them from their evil way,    and from the evil of their deeds.Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. The Song of Mary - MagnificatMy soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; * for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant From this day all generations will call me blessed: * the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him * in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, * he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, * and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, * for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, * to Abraham and his children for ever.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *as It was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Matthew 28:16-20 English Standard Version16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. The Song of Simeon - Nunc dimittisLord, you now have set your servant free * to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, * whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, * and the glory of your people Israel.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. On this week's episode of the Business of Biotech, we welcome two extraordinary guests - Dr. Neela Patel, a molecular biologist-turned-Chief Business Officer, and Dr. John Mulligan, an academic-turned-founder of newly-formed Bonum Therapeutics. Together, Neela and John will pull back the curtain on Bonum's transition from its predecessor, Good Therapeutics, which was fueled by a high-profile asset sale to Roche. The asset, a PD-1-regulated IL-2 program, was a product of a platform that the new Bonum retains, and its sale to Roche was orchestrated by Dr. Patel. You've seen the terms of the deal in the news, but on this episode, you'll get the inside scoop on how the deal was done, how it set Bonum up for future paltform-driven succes, and how these two leaders retained its IP and its people through a fast, unique, and disruptive acquisition. Subscribe to the #BusinessofBiotech newsletter at bioprocessonline.com/bob for more real, honest, transparent interactions with the leaders of emerging biotech. If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.Si quis venit ad me, et non odit patrem suum, et matrem, et uxorem, et filios, et fratres, et sorores, adhuc autem et animam suam, non potest meus esse discipulus.  27 And whosoever doth not carry his cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.Et qui non bajulat crucem suam, et venit post me, non potest meus esse discipulus.  28 For which of you having a mind to build a tower, doth not first sit down, and reckon the charges that are necessary, whether he have wherewithal to finish it:Quis enim ex vobis volens turrim aedificare, non prius sedens computat sumptus, qui necessarii sunt, si habeat ad perficiendum,  29 Lest, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that see it begin to mock him,ne, posteaquam posuerit fundamentum, et non potuerit perficere, omnes qui vident, incipiant illudere ei,  30 Saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish.dicentes : Quia hic homo coepit aedificare, et non potuit consummare?  31 Or what king, about to go to make war against another king, doth not first sit down, and think whether he be able, with ten thousand, to meet him that, with twenty thousand, cometh against him?Aut quis rex iturus committere bellum adversus alium regem, non sedens prius cogitat, si possit cum decem millibus occurrere ei, qui cum viginti millibus venit ad se?  32 Or else, whilst the other is yet afar off, sending an embassy, he desireth conditions of peace.Alioquin adhuc illo longe agente, legationem mittens rogat ea quae pacis sunt.  33 So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple.Sic ergo omnis ex vobis, qui non renuntiat omnibus quae possidet, non potest meus esse discipulus.  34 Salt is good. But if the salt shall lose its savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?Bonum est sal : si autem sal evanuerit, in quo condietur?  35 It is neither profitable for the land nor for the dunghill, but shall be cast out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.Neque in terram, neque in sterquilinium utile est, sed foras mittetur. Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.

In this talk, Pastor Brian Lund first gave a historical overview of how reformers learned to transition to a distinctly Prostestant manner of conducting funerals. At first there was a cold opposition to any formality related to honoring the dead in Christ or for following a worshipful liturgy. This would come later, but as it did new insights were formed as to how churches could give comfort to the grieving and wisdom to the community at the passing of their loved ones. Brian's experience and heart for pastoral care came through this talk even as he gave a well-researched presentation on a topic not often considered.

Luke 10:5-6 NLT Whenever you enter someone’s home, first say, “May God’s peace be on this house.” If those who live there are peaceful, the blessing will stand; if they are not, the blessing will return to you. I remember the transfer of responsibility for the welfare of my parents being passed onto me. With a diagnosis of terminal cancer, my dad, a strong if silent individual, who had fought through the whole of the Second World War, including participating in three land invasions, mentally accepted that he would soon pass from mortality into eternity. He asked me to oversee my parents’ move from their family home in London to a flat in Portsmouth, the city where I lived. In the fraction of time it took for me to accept my father’s request, I felt the weight of that responsibility settle on my shoulders. It has taken far longer for me to acknowledge and then accept the responsibility of serving God’s kingdom objectives with my whole heart and life. I am to see all of life through eyes redeemed through God’s grace. My decisions are to be made in the light of eternity. I am to live in ways that demonstrate that “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20-21, NIV). So, I am required to practise hospitality. One part of that responsibility is to share the peace of Christ’s presence and rule with all those who I meet. I am to respect them and to pray for them. Such prayers are always for their well-being. For me this means that whenever anyone visits me, I seek to welcome them as I would welcome Jesus. If I visit someone, then I am to carry God’s peace into their home and pray for their good. I have learned from my interest in St Francis to adopt his greeting as my prayer. “[itals]Pax et Bonum[end itals],” he would say – peace and goodness be with you and your household: my simple understanding. I don’t use the Latin as a greeting, but I do pray both for my host. QUESTION: Do you want to be a channel of peace and goodness? PRAYER: May the peace of Christ go with me and rest on those places I visit this week.

Last week, I had the great opportunity to attend Singapore’s first Money20/20 Asia. From March 12 until 14, I was in Singapore, meeting a few old companions and FinTech enthusiasts – and experiencing a whole load of new things. Besides the climate shock that awaited me upon leaving wintry Germany and arriving in hot Singapore, I had a blast! I attended some really interesting events, e.g. with Ant Financial and the FCA (with the great Anna Wallace); ran into some great FinTech personalities, such as Brett King, Chris Skinner and Ghela Boskovich – and had some really interesting chats for our Podcast PayTechTalk, for instance about Blockchain, ICO and Token, which I want to present to you today. Blockchain, ICO and Token I was lucky enough to chat with Danette Wallace from Blockpass about their sovereign identity app based on the blockchain, which has already been featured in German media IT Finanzmagazin. Furthermore I talked to Eric Anziani from Monaco about their aim to bring cryptocurrencies into every wallet – and last but not least I had a chat with Igor Rogachev from Bonum about how and why their Tokens will make your life easier. I have to unfortunately warn you in advance about the varying quality of the audio files. Recording was quite challenging since I was in the noisy center of the event and alas not in the quiet eye of the storm! But despite this, I’m confident you’ll get to know three very ambitious and promising companies. So sit back, relax and enjoy PayTechTalk 18!
