In today's Pas de Cast, we're launching a new episode series where, rather than a specific location or film, we will be exploring how specific genres of dance intersect with cinema and technology. Ballet originated as a combination of choreographic display and social dance, and we have seen this evolve as our capacities to both choreograph and be social expand.Like a Ballet you may see In the theatre, We're splitting today's show into acts. In act one, we'll talk about a range of examples of ballet on screen, from mainstream to experimental. In act two, will focus on how ballet has been and continues to be used as a tool beyond pure entertainment. Highlighted in this Episode:Pas de Deux (1968)Dir. Norman McLarenProd. Dancer David Hallberg was once described by the New Yorker as the most exciting male dancer in the Western world and worked his way up through the American ballet theatre to become the first American principal dancer at the Bolshoi ballet in Moscow. David connects with dancer and actor Lil Buck. Buck specializes in an altogether different kind of dance, Jookin, which originates in Buck's hometown of Memphis. In this episode, Yana Peel, Global Head of Arts & Culture at CHANEL, moderates a conversation between both as they explore transforming dance, who inspired them both to pursue careers in dancing, what makes Jookin so innovative and unique, and find out if anyone can learn how to dance.
Shannon's guest this week on the Bruce Lee Podcast is long time friend, movement artist and director, Jon Boogz. Jon and Shannon met more than a decade ago at a taping of So You Think You Can Dance, and they have been friends ever since! Shannon has watched Jon's star rise over the last decade and it is rising still. She's witnessed him go from living in a tiny apartment with 3 other dancers to working with such greats as Mikhail Baryshnikov, Naomi Campbell, and Gloria Estefan. Jon's performances and choreography have been featured in Pharrell's Adidas Original's campaign and the Adidas Tribute to Standing Rock at ComplexCon, as well as on the new series on Starz Blindspotting. Boogz also co-founded Movement Art Is with fellow dancer, collaborator and friend Lil Buck in 2016 and together they have created projects that merge movement with social issues. Jon is passionate about dance and movement as a medium for self expression and higher awareness. Shannon loved their conversation and she feels like Jon really embodies the soul of an artist and expresses himself beautifully. She thinks for some, this conversation can help offer a window into parts of Bruce Lee's soul as a movement artist as well. Check out the shownotes for more about Jon and where you can connect with him. But for now, please listen to Shannon and Boogz get real on the Bruce Lee Podcast! Tämän päivän jakson aiheena on Netflixin Move -dokumenttisarja, suom. Liike. Jaksossa kerrotaan tanssija Kimiko Versatilen tarinaa. Viidennessä jaksossa Akram Khan kutoo magiasta ja muistoista intensiivisiä koreografioita, joiden pohja on hänen bangladeshilaisissa juurissaan. Onko edellä mainitut tanssijat sulle tuttuja? Miksi dokumenttisarja kannattaa katsoa?
Tiler Peck, New York City Ballet Principal is not only a famous ballerina in the US, she has become a global household name following her uber successful live ballet classes #turnoutwithtiler, launched during the covid pandemic. In this podcast, Tiler gives an insight into her inspiration for starting the online classes and the incredible feedback received from dancers around the world. Tiler shares one special story about a dancer in Iran, who was able to take class in the privacy of her own home, in a country where dancing in public is forbidden. This is the power of dance, and the power of digital dance during the pandemic. Listen to Tiler talk about her experience of lockdown and months away from the studio, following an extensive break from dancing as a result of a serious neck injury last year. In Tiler's uplifting style, she shares how she has been dealing with dancing at home and how she's ensuring she's ready for when the New York City Ballet is able to perform live. She also gives some insightful advice for other dancers, who are in a similar situation waiting for dance to return to the stage. Tiler has used this time away from the studio and rehearsals to create A New Stage, which is having its world premiere online on 16 October (then available to stream). Hear Tiler talk about curating and staring in A New Stage, which includes three new pieces from ballet to hip-hop to tap; working with Lil Buck, Sierra Boggess, Brooklyn Mack and the Syncopated Ladies, who take the stage in works by Chloe Arnold and Jennifer Weber, and a world premiere from Christopher Wheeldon. To movement artists Jon Boogz and Lil Buck – aka MAI – dance can be a form of entertainment, but it’s also a vehicle for connection, education, and action. Kimberly sits down with MAI to talk about changing perceptions of dance and the power of channeling your experiences through art. Plus, Buck answers the question many of us have probably had after watching him perform: Do his toes hurt when he dances?
From life as a little boy in Memphis to navigating a community where gang members were friends. He had the realization that he was not just a dancer but a master of Jukin. From ballet school to performing with Madonna and YoYoMa to becoming the face of brands, he has formed artistic partnerships with Apple to massive fashion conglomerates. He Co- created MovementArtIs (where social justice is expressed and discussed through art and dance). We barley could cover it all in our Season 2 Premier with Charles “Lil Buck” Riley. There’s no other way to put it - this man is an artist, a master mind, and does it all with a heart of gold. Please take a moment to hear him tell his inspiring story on this weeks episode.

LoJoWERKz Graphic Arts Version of Jerome and Tim at Work LoJoWERKz Tim Long and Jerome Johnson met in 1991 at Okmulgee High School in Oklahoma when Tim was a young substitute teacher doing music and art on the side and Jerome was a high school kid into street dancing. Today the pair form the foundation of LoJoWERKz productions. The innovative stage and screen entertainment company blends hip-hop culture with traditional genres and has garnered some very high level attention. Tim’s companion art label, TuTchT IMAGING, creates graphic art featuring models of color. Before collaborating on their first full book musical, A Song of Greenwood, in the late 1990s, the two LojoWERKz founders collaborated on projects for the church they both attended. Higher Dimensions Church in Tulsa, led by Carlton Pearson, encouraged the pair’s creative expression and led to a working partnership. The Cast of "Roofless" from the 2016 Table Reading LoJoWERKz' current project, Roofless, started as a dance concert directed by the inimitable Tyrone Wilkerson for American Theatre Company in Tulsa. They worked the Roofless script into a full-blown musical and were awarded a place in 2004 into the ASCAP Foundation/Disney Musical Theatre Workshop. When they were accepted, Michael Kerker, Director of Musical Theatre for ASCAP, told them Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz was really impressed by their work. Tim and Jerome have been mentored by Kerker and Schwartz since 2004. In 2005 they won the Harold Arlen Musical Theatre Award. Since that time the show has been called “groundbreaking”, “genius”, and “the future of the musical” by people who know what they’re talking about. Tim has a background in film. He’s a 1988 graduate of the famously innovative CalArts. And he and Jerome have been working on a new approach Roofless. They gave SallyPAL an exclusive reveal of what’s next for this amazing show and it’s going to expand the musical form on many levels. Tim and Jerome already have some experience creating a blend of new and old they both love. In the short film HotFoot, Jerome choreographs famous hip-hop dance artist Lil Buck in a silent movie that also features Jerome’s eight-year-old son Sage. I’ve followed Lojowerkz for a few years and it’s really great to see this pair experiencing the success they deserve. They're just good people and there’s more ahead for both of these extraordinarily talented friends. They talk about a lot of exciting new things happening in the worlds of musical theatre, film, and hip-hop, including Lin Manuel Miranda’s works, In the Heights and Hamilton, and the work of artists like Lil Buck. You’ll hear Jerome’s son, Sage, in the background. Also, his wife, Tyff, makes a brief appearance. If you listen to the podcast, be sure and listen until the end of the interview for Concise Advice from the Interview, and Words of Wisdom from George. Concise Advice from the Interview: 9) Being an outsider can be an advantage. Use it. 8) Keep moving forward and surround yourself with smart people, you’ll eventually get where you need to go. 7) Listen to critique for the grain of truth but take advice from people who know what they’re doing. 6) Don’t try to reshape what you have to fit the marketplace, but do get in the system to get to the caliber of advice you need. 5) Submit your work once it’s performance ready. 4) Get into legitimate circles to hone your voice and your craft. 3) A great idea won’t leave you. 2) Know your voice. 1) Keep putting your foot on the gas and go. Storytelling through plays, dances, music, and other types of performances is the most important thing we do as a culture. I encourage you to share your stories because you’re the only one with your particular point of view. And SallyPAL is here with resources, encouragement, and a growing community of storytellers. All the stories ever expressed once lived only in someone’s imagination. Now, keep putting your foot on the gas and go!
