Expositors Collective
Jesus, Homer and the Necessity of Mentoring the Next Generation

Expositors Collective

Episode Summary: In this episode of the Expositors Collective Podcast, we feature a compelling message from Bryan Stupar on the vital role of mentorship in ministry and life. Drawing from his deep well of pastoral experience and biblical understanding, Bryan illustrates the importance of older generations investing in the younger. He weaves together biblical examples—including the ultimate model of Jesus—and classical wisdom from Homer's Odyssey to provide a rich, multidimensional perspective on mentorship. Whether you're seeking to grow as a mentor or looking to be mentored, this episode will inspire and challenge you to cultivate meaningful, transformative relationships. Bryan opens by defining mentorship as a relational investment designed to foster intentional growth, aligning closely with the principles of biblical discipleship. He delves into Homer's Odyssey, highlighting the character Mentor as a timeless example of guidance and wisdom that parallels biblical models. Addressing modern challenges, Bryan underscores how the cultural zeitgeist subtly influences individuals, often mentoring them in ways they might not even realise. He contrasts this with the concept of expressive individualism, which Carl Trueman defines as a cultural emphasis on self-expression and authenticity as the ultimate goals, often at the expense of communal responsibility and growth. Bryan uses Alicia Keyes as a case study to illustrate the pervasive impact of this mindset. Turning to Scripture, Bryan unpacks Jesus' intentional and humble approach to mentorship, showcasing His unwavering commitment to the growth and development of His disciples. He concludes with a call for listeners to follow Jesus' example by embracing the dual roles of being mentored and mentoring others, thereby fostering spiritual and personal growth within the Church. About Bryan Stupar: Bryan Stupar, born in 1970 and raised in the surf culture of Huntington Beach, California, became a Christian at the age of 15. In 1993, he and his wife, Sherry, moved to San Luis Obispo to plant Calvary SLO Church, now a vibrant and influential ministry on California's Central Coast. Bryan is a devoted husband, father to two daughters (Brianna and Brooke), and lover of photography, coffee culture, and surfing. His life's passion is investing in others for the glory of God and the good of the world. The quote: “ ‘I just don't want that for myself anymore' is a valid enough reason to stop anything” kicked off this new episode about the power of the word NO. Too often we kill ourselves in the spirit of saying yes to everything – and everyone – and many of us are too afraid to create healthy boundaries. Joining me to discuss this and more is my longtime friend, Public relations powerhouse Gwen Wunderlich, whose company Wunderlich Kaplan Communications has offices in NY, Miami and now Saudi Arabia. She has almost 27 years of experience working with the likes of Alicia Keyes, Bal Harbour Shops, Maserati, Swizz Beatz, the NFL and so much more – and she also created a program called The Enternship in 2014 to help women over 40 reinvent and reshift themselves. Her energy is electric, positive and exactly aligns with That Greenwich Life. And stay tuned to the end of the episode for the weekly “Work ON.” Just like we all have our daily and weekly workouts, on That Greenwich Life, I'm leaving you each episode with your weekly “Work ON” -- something small you can think about and do during the week that brings you more peace, balance and introspection. Been meaning to get going on those Morning Pages since forever? Well, as part of our January motivation series, this week we're revisiting my fascinating conversation with the woman who brought us The Artist's Way.---My guest today is the author of the cult bestseller The Artist's Way, Julia Cameron. Written in her late 50s she looked back over the first half(ish) of her life: her catholic education, alcoholism and drug abuse, her brief marriage to director Martin Scorsese, and her subsequent search for meaning, for herself, for home, ultimately for a way to be comfortably sober.Speaking from her home in Santa Fe, Julia shared her incredible journey from “just a girl” at Catholic school to The Artists Way by way of leaving Washington a writer and landing in Hollywood a wife. Carlos has played on more than 30 different gold or platinum albums with an enormous resume that includes names like James Brown, Chuck Berry, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, Alicia Keyes, Iggy Pop, Luther Vandross, The Pretenders, Simple Minds (featuring his wife Robin Clark), Ben E. The event is being held in the wake of several councils, most recently the City of Monash, deciding to cancel their drag queen storytime event because of threats of violence from conservative campaigners and far right groups. Find out more and get involved in tomorrow's queer community celebration here, and support the Glitterific Gay Gathering Fund here.  Dr Jordana Silverstein, historian and Senior Research Fellow at Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness, Melbourne Law School, speaks with us about her new book 'Cruel Care', an eye-opening exploration of the construction and violent governance of child refugees in Australian law and policy. Cruel Care asks provocative questions about how policymakers are shaped by, and in turn shape, their histories, communities and the nation, and draws our attention to the importance of situating these concerns within ongoing settler colonialism in so-called Australia. It is a clarion call for better treatment for all who seek asylum on this continent. Cruel Care is published by Monash University Press.  Songs:Took the Children Away - Archie Roach

They embraced. Both Penn Holderness and his wife Kim. The halogen lights caught the tears on their cheeks and made them shine like diamonds. Ironic that in this strange new world, those tears were worth more than an entire sea of diamonds. Much like this world, their tender moment wasn't to last and it was Penn who attempted to break first—ever the man on a mission—but his wife held him fast. Pulled him back, pulled him down so that their foreheads touched. She looked into his eyes, and pushed her forehead into his, harder than she ought to. Hoping that maybe if she applied enough force she could finally pierce the skin. Crush the bone that separated, to finally get through to him, or perhaps to finally understand him —the man he had become. Penn broke first. This time with more force and she let him. What choice did she have? “You don't know that.” he said, his response was delayed and directed at her earlier declaration. That common refrain that seemed to drive the two of them to tears more and more often. He turned from her and resumed stepping into his proximity suit. A shiny silver affair with built in helmet and footwear, raided from a fire station when it all went down, capable of withstanding up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. “Let's say you're right. Let's say there are others.” She said. “Why waste your time with this? Internets been gone for god knows how long.” “Which is why we broadcast.” said Penn and he rapped on the cold metal wall behind him, and the sound reverberated throughout the entire bunker. Kim couldn't take it. She broke down again. “Please don't go out there ,” she all but whispered. “Don't leave me all alone.” “I have to.” Penn said, and he worked both arms into the suit. “It's dangerous.” “That's what the suits for.” “Every time..” Kim began, and Penn stopped his preparations, stared at his wife with tenderness in his eyes. “Every time you go out...I feel like you leave a piece of yourself out there.” Seeing his wife as she was, Penn fought back both his desire to comfort her, and his desire to weep. He smiled as best he could. “Guess I'm just full of holes then,” he said. And he was right. He was damaged —leaking. He was a Swiss-cheesed levee that had been pouring out since before everything began, before the children. He would never tell Kim, though he suspected she could sense it, that soon there would be nothing more to spill. His will to live emptied out, gone to where all the water in the world had gone. To where all his kids had gone, his parents. Just —gone. Until then though, he'd do the only thing he could do. Retread the steps he took when life was worth living. What more could you ask of a living ghost? So he left his wife crying, slipped on his helmet, attached the oxygen tanks and brought up his equipment to the steel door at the top of the stairs. The one with the tiny view port like a welders mask. Once at the top he worked the wheel of the air-locked door, which eventually hissed open. Exposed to the outside he greeted the scorched earth and the perpetual ash that swirled and rode the hot air. He spied the red and wounded sky and began to set up his things: the camera, the speakers. He made sure everything was in frame and then he started up the karaoke version of Alicia Keyes' classic hit. And when it came time for him to do the chorus he belted out his own version of it into the microphone that was recording inside his suit. “THIS .WORLD. IS ON FIYAAAAAAAAHHHH!” Topics discussed on today's episode include: Cait Called The Twist, SlurpFam Fall Fashion Week Month, James Corden Car Talk, Notes From Van and more! Dustin is Director of eMobility North America for Volkswagen. What an incredible artist with such a powerful voice and an array of musical talents. Jacqine has gained notoriety as a prolific singer/songwriter/keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist/and arranger in a wide array of genres. With a distinct voice and influences that extend the gamut from Alison Moyet, Annie Lenox, Maysa, Lalah Hathaway, Lara Fabian, Phoebe Snow, to many other vocalists, she has built quite a music following. Talented on keyboards, she has a keen sense of choosing instrumental sounds that reflect an unequivocal unique combination of chord patterns for each song she creates. Her journey into music at a very young age began with her dad who introduced her to 1950's and 1960's records of Mama Cass and Edie Gorme as well as Debbie Boone, Barbra Streisand, and other artists and popular movies. She listened to Miichael Jackson, Tavares, Cerrone, Chic, and a number of 1970's classic groups. Some of Jacqine's favorite music includes: Earth, Wind, and Fire, Kool and the Gang, Incognito, Ambrosia , Elton John, the Eagles, Shalimar, Shakatak, Phil Collins, Kansas, and Chicago. She creates complex harmonies, chord progressions, melodies and lyrics and creates and emulates other instruments on keyboards such as saxophone, guitar, flute, oboe, clarinet, strings, bass, brass which has led to demo recordings and live performances, She studied voice privately with Iris Marrus with Susan Windor (Jazz teacher at Mannace School of Music)as well as Jazz Improvisation in a group and where she learned traditional Jazz and very complex chord progressions with the creation of jazz melodies and chord progressions in anticipation of song development. She studied and sang pop music as well with a Pop and Jazz vocalist. Her introduction to Smooth Jazz began while listening to CD101.9 and hearing Peter White's track Caravan of Dreams on the radio in addition to Pat Metheny's music. She bought CD's and a number of albums of various Smooth Jazz artists latest releases such as David Benoit, Tom Scott, David Sanborn, and Jonathan Butler. Jacqine became an avid listener and huge fan of the music, attending shows of Stanley Jordan, Richard Elliot, Brian Culbertson, and listening to additional Smooth Jazz radio stations as well. In a chance meeting, she was introduced to the dance genre after a producer heard her sing and she got her first production nonexclusive deal with a producer which led to doing more records non-exclusively with several producers, one of whom she was asked to co-write. She found success with a song she co-wrote that was licensed at the Cannes Film Festival in France in 13 countries and had the opportunity to work with Eric Kupper, remixer for Whitney Houston, Cher, Shakira, Alicia Keyes, Lenny Kravitz, Yoko, Ono, Donna Summer, Curtis Mayfield, and other artists. She has graced audiences with her vocals while performing at several venues in New York City including The Jazz Center of New York, Nells, Jewel Box, and Café Gianluca. She has gained attention from the TV industry and some of the music is fit for the film score genre as well. Currently, with tons of radio play and music radio interviews, she has fans locally and abroad with music heard in over 40 countries and 35,000 listeners. Most recently, on a couple of songs,Jacqine recorded with Curtis McCain, Naomi Andriaanz, Donald Waugh, Scott Marvill, Matthias Beckmann, and Craig Levy of Little Pioneer Cider House. Craig did the drums on Jacqine's song and Jacqine added extra drums on a couple of those songs. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/neil-clark10/message

It was at the age of five, singing my heart out to The Little Mermaid when I realized I wanted to be a singer. Whitney Houston, TLC, and Mariah Carey are just a few artists from the 90's who highly influenced me at such a young age." "I figure the more love for music that you can spread around, it helps the world become a better place. Expression boosts confidence. Expression also relieves pain and usually conveys messages, meaningful to the artist." "I always know that there will be at least one person out there who digs my stuff. I don't fret because I know I'm just doing my own thing, and doing something I love. An in depth review of the new Alicia Keys album “Alicia.” Alicia Keyes has got talent coming out of her ears. Quality singer, great piano player and pretty good song writer. Her first 3-5 albums were great and had a good mix of love, Party, and impactful music. Over the past two albums she's went in a different direction. It seems like she is trying to give people therapy through music trying to get people to live their lives the right way and live their truth. I feel like she has slowly gone away from what worked for her so well earlier in her career. With that being said I've been out on Alicia for some time, but I wanted to see if she would bounce back and give the people what they want. I also talked about my virtual/hybrid classes, selling things on line, my medical scare and other random stuff (business as usual). 5 Conversations to remedy stay-at-home order fueled problems. "I thought love would be my cure, but now it's my disease." – Alicia Keyes, "Love Is My Disease". Don’t let this quote speak the truth for you. Spending 24/7 with someone you adore can make even the greatest love turn to frustration. Learn how to transform irritations into productive conversations, so you can look at your partner with adoration in your eyes. Do your best to make these conversations positive and productive. Stay away from pointing out what is wrong, blaming, criticizing, taking shots, defending, or withdrawing. Work to state your wishes and dreams as positive needs, not what you do not want. My guest today: the artist Jaybo Monk. Is there really anything I need to say about him? He has been around some time, creating an intense body of work, he is showing internationally at great galleries for many years his work is part of huge collections, such as the Dean Collection of Swizz Beats and Alicia Keyes, and his early background is as exciting as his art. In short: He ran away from his home in France when he was 14, lived on the streets of Paris and Toulouse, made Hip-Hop Music and Street Acting and of course Street Art, travelled a lot, came to Berlin in the 80ies - a very different town back then - co-founded the magazine “Style and the Family Tunes“ and the fashion-label „Irie Daily“, both in the 90ies, and for me is simply one of the most influential artists of our times. I am a very a huge fan of his for a long time, so I was more than happy when he got in touch as he visited Hamburg and we could sit down at my studio to talk.

On this week’s episode, we are joined in the studio with the incomparable, soulful and everybody's favorite - Mama Blue who dropped by to share her journey through song, sharing her love for music and connecting with the people with her voice. She also performed an exclusive live set of new music she's working on and gives Taste Test Live listeners a taste of "Brown-Skin Blues"  and "No Need" originally performed by Orcastratum featuring Eric Bibb & Shaneeka Simon. And of course, we laughed during the funniest  (and intentionally not-raunchy) ‘Put This In Your Mouth’ segment where Blue Franswa, MJbaker and Damien Lamar discussed hot topics of the week including The Oscars, Iggy Azalea and more.     SONG CREDITS: "Brown-Skin Blues" and "No Need" - Keyboards: Andre Martins & Krishna Achath on percussion   GUEST BIOS:  ABOUT MAMA BLUE Mama Blue is an original. She brings the “live” in live performance. Her connection with her audience, whether they’ve ever heard her before, or even heard of her, has to be experienced to be appreciated. The songs that Mama Blue has written are the core of her performances. Her songs are unsparing in their self-examination, but compassionate and supportive of those around her. Mama Blue’s originals are destined to reach an audience far beyond the area in which she has, until now, performed live. Mama Blue’s songs are about her own life, the lives of people she’s known, and the lives of everyone. They’re about the joy and pain of love, about being a mother, about the social forces that influence our lives. And she sings directly to her audiences … not just figuratively, but walking out with a wireless microphone to sing to them close-up. Combine that original material with a selection of songs by artists who’ve inspired Mama Blue – ranging from soul sisters Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Alicia Keyes and Nina Simone to rock bands like Queen and The Rolling Stones – and you have a musical journey through modern American life. Born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Mama Blue graduated from the city’s prestigious Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. She earned a scholarship to Jacksonville University, where she majored in vocal performance and drama. Mama Blue and her crew have performed at festivals from Springing the Blues, Dancin’ in the Streets and Porch Fest in Jacksonville, to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, and at events and nightclubs across Northeast Florida and beyond. With a signature flower in her hair as the finishing touch to her visual style, and a unique ability to reach people at the center of their souls, Mama Blue brings the warmth and understanding of an irresistibly genuine person to the stage. You can get an idea of her talent from the videos and audio clips on this website. But to truly experience the magic of Mama Blue, hear her live – the first chance you get. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style

"Comfort is the root of confidence and not the other way around." —Haley Mlotek in The New York Times Style Magazine ~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #130 Confidence is attractive. Confidence can be deceiving. Confidence is however hard to fake. But the hard truth about confidence is that it is rooted in feeling comfortable with that which you project to be confident about. Depending upon the arena, the one who exudes confidence draws the attention from the masses due to either curiosity to figure out how they too can emulate such confidence on a particular subject or way of life that they desire or out of appreciation from others who have confidence as well. Because when one projects an air of confidence there is a sense of security, self-worth, and peace of mind knowing that they are able to think and live independently. Confidence is valuable in a variety of aspects throughout our lives. But it must be understood that confidence is a dynamic entity as it depends on understanding something that is as well quite fluid: life, the world, other people, etc. Because of this reality, it requires of each of us to be always pursuing knowledge, asking questions and remaining a participant in the world in which we live. I first came across the quote above as it was pertaining to beauty and the recent trend to no longer wear makeup as inspired by Alicia Keyes who shared openly this past May in a letter (it's well worth the time to read) that she longed to just be herself and stop the constant work of being a chameleon and being what she thought she had to be, rather than be who she truly was. The article gave me pause because it is difficult to put down the masks that we present to the world as they are in many ways our armor, and it is far easier to just do what is expected, project an image or idea that is expected or easy for all to see and hear. So where do we find the comfort that is needed to have the confidence we seek? ~Take the time to get to know yourself and continue this ongoing process ~Build a healthy social network ~Stretch yourself - try things you have never done before but want to do and someday do well ~Read and learn voraciously and endlessly I can think of more than a few instances when I did not have confidence. Most recently, I have become frustrated when I attempt to converse in French at our local conversation group or with friends or instructors who know how to speak the language. I feel as though I am presenting an entirely different person, as though the person they are hearing and seeing is not the real Shannon. And as I gave this some thought, I realized why I wasn't enjoying myself: I wasn't comfortable and therefore I couldn't be confident and relax. It is a vicious cycle. So, I will admit, for a time, I stopped going to the weekly group conversations. Okay, for quite a lengthy time. I chose to study on my own, but I realized that in order to increase my comfort, I needed to stretch myself. That is the most perplexing paradox of this entire conversation. Yes, we need comfort to be and reflect confidence, but confidence can only be gained if we choose to grow, learn and step outside of our comfort zone. Below are just a few examples of arenas that require each of us to experiment, stretch ourselves and try new things in order to gain the confidence we seek: our preferences in food a way of life (visit a variety of cultures, learn the answer to the "why" questions) our signature style with regards to our wardrobe and our homes with whom we are most compatible: friends, partners, workplace environments interests and hobbies However, it requires balance. Don't put yourself entirely in uncomfortable scenarios all of the time. Stretch yourself just enough so that you are always able to be growing rather than regressing. For me, on top of trying to develop new friendships as well as learning a new language, I found that I needed to separate the two so that I could be my confident, authentic self with those who were just beginning to know me. So I struck a balance, communicated with them that I wanted dearly to build our friendship, but felt learning a language simultaneously wasn't going to work for me. And they completely understood. When we can come home to a place that allows us to feel comfort, we can then be recharged to go back out and try something new, but we must have a sanctuary of comfort always available to us to retreat to get that fix. The sanctuary of comfort may be your actual house or apartment or it may be a person, an activity or a particular place. The key begins with knowing yourself. Not only knowing what you like and dislike, what makes you feel comfortable and uncomfortable, but why you feel and prefer what you do. Knowledge is truly power, not only as an approach to life, but as well when it comes to understanding ourselves and living our best lives. ~Similar posts from the Archives you might enjoy: ~Confidence: How to Gain It & What It Is Invaluable ~Why Not . . .
