This is the audio from an amazing webinar I did with Alloy Health. I was so fortunate to be interviewed by their community leader, Rachel Hughes. What I'm seeing clearly is that Gen X is leading the menopause conversation — we're asking better questions, demanding better answers, and refusing to be dismissed. At the same time, Millennials are shifting the focus toward prevention, not just treating disease after it shows up. That mindset matters, and it's changing healthcare. I talk a lot about why self-care isn't indulgent — it's essential if you want to thrive in midlife and beyond. That starts with education. You cannot make informed decisions about your body if no one ever taught you how hormones actually work. Hormones are not just reactive tools — they can be preventative, supporting long-term health when used thoughtfully and appropriately. Progesterone and testosterone play real, meaningful roles in women's health, and vaginal estrogen is both safe and incredibly effective for many women — despite how rarely it's discussed. We also have to talk about sex. Communication is foundational to a fulfilling sex life in midlife, and silence only benefits outdated narratives, not women. The bottom line? You have more control over your health than you've been led to believe. Empowerment doesn't come from perfection — it comes from understanding your body and advocating for yourself in a system that often won't do it for you. Cancer can be seen as a seed that only sprouts in the right soil—the body's inner landscape. Today, that soil is changing fast, and cancer rates are climbing, especially among young people. Our modern diet—packed with sugar, processed foods, and nonstop snacking—keeps the body flooded with signals to grow, not heal. But there's good news: by eating real, colorful foods and giving the body time to rest between meals, we can calm inflammation, balance our gut, and make our inner soil far less welcoming to disease. The power to shift the story lies in every bite and every pause we take. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Thomas Seyfried, how modern diets and constant eating create a fertile soil for disease. Dr. Jason Fung is a physician, author, and researcher. His groundbreaking science-based books about diabetes and obesity, The Diabetes Code, The Obesity Code, and The Complete Guide to Fasting have sold over one million copies and challenged the conventional wisdom that diabetics should be treated with insulin. Dr. Fung is also the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a program to help people lose weight and reverse Type 2 Diabetes naturally with fasting. His work on fasting has been cited by CNN, Time, The Atlantic, Forbes, The Toronto Star, and many other media outlets. His latest book is The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery. Dr. Thomas Seyfried is an American professor of biology, genetics, and biochemistry at Boston College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1976 and did his postdoctoral fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Seyfried has over 150 peer-reviewed publications, and his research focuses primarily on the mechanisms driving cancer, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative diseases and calorie-restricted ketogenic diets in their prevention and treatment. He is the author of Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer and presently serves on the Nutrition & Metabolism, Neurochemical Research, Journal of Lipid Research, and ASN Neuro editorial boards. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Scott Eveloff, author of the book Do Not Resuscitate. Scott Eveloff, MD is a physician living in Overland Park Kansas, having served the medical needs of far-flung towns in rural Missouri for greater than thirty years while actively publishing his perspectives on ethics in medicine. He has published extensively in the medical literature, having authored or co-authored 24 articles and book chapters. He has also authored and published a book detailing the first tumultuous years of his son's life, Both Sides of The White Coat (People With Disabilities Press, 2000, 127 pages). Such extraordinary experiences as both a physician and parent of a medically complex child have been picked up and published by media as distant as England. His work has also earned him appearances on ABC's 20/20 Medical Mysteries, ABC News Nightline, and on the Dr. Oz show. Dr Eveloff has remained a passionate advocate for the disabled. Many characters in his novels were inspired by his son's life and attitude, and are tributes to the dignity that the disabled deserve but often do not receive. Besides his passion for patient advocacy and compassion in today's intimidating medical world, Dr. Eveloff's interests include World War II, the Jewish experience in the Holocaust, and the supernatural. Out of such varied interests have sprung two books, Do Not Resuscitate (Black Rose Writing) and The Golem's Holocaust (Histria Books), the latter fiction reimagining strange coincidences of history by combining actual events with a mythological creature. Although Dr. Eveloff has indulged his love of writing with a focus on writing outside of medical subject matter, he also continues to submit and publish articles on the state of medicine and patient care. In my book review, I stated Do Not Resuscitate is an intense medical thriller. We meet Harry, an intern who finds himself on the wrong side of deaths that appear to be medical errors - his medical errors. He believes he may be a witness to an angel of death and suspects his resident. But everything turns sideways when he begins hearing and seeing the dead. In addition to dealing with his own grief from the loss of his newborn child, his wife's grief, and the long hours of being an intern, Harry wonders if he is losing his mind. After meeting an elderly doctor, he realizes he has stumbled into something otherworldly - and it will be up to him to save innocent patients - and even those he loves. Will he be able to get others to believe that the dead are stealing bodies by using modern resuscitation techniques? More importantly, will he be able to create a plan to stop the madness? This book will keep you on the edge of your seat - and is a must read for any medical thriller enthusiast! Gail Eisnittz joins Let's Talk Memoir for a conversation about structuring her memoir around her pursuit of answers to a lifelong medical mystery, coming to terms with her own humanness, writing about her career in animal advocacy, exposing the underbelly of the meat industry and effecting change for millions of animals, working on difficult and hard-to-sell material, not sharing a book project with friends and loved ones until it's complete, weathering a difficult submission process, allowing herself to soften emotionally, becoming more in touch with self-compassion, and her new memoir Out of Sightz: An Undercover Investigator's Fight for Animal Rights and Her Own Survival. Eisnitz, winner of the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Medal for outstanding achievement in animal welfare, has been working for decades to document and expose the shocking underbelly of the U.S. meat industry. She is chief investigator for the Humane Farming Association and author of the forthcoming memoir, Out of Sight: An Undercover Investigator's Fight for Animal Rights and Her Own Survival. Eisnitz and her first book, Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment inside the U.S. Meat Industry, were the driving force behind a front-page exposé in the Washington Post that resulted in an annual multimillion dollar Congressional appropriation for enforcement of the Humane Slaughter Act – the first funding ever allocated for a law that had been on the books for more than forty years. Eisnitz's work has resulted in exposés by ABC's Good Morning America, PrimeTime Live, and Dateline NBC, has been featured in such newspapers as the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Miami Herald, Detroit Free Press, Texas Monthly, Denver Business Journal, Los Angeles Times, and U.S. News & World Report, and her interviews have been heard on more than 1,000 radio stations. In her new memoir, Eisnitz takes readers on a journey of self-discovery as she fights to document and expose scandalous animal abuse, all in the face of a rare visual processing disorder that she has grappled with since childhood. The disease, which was only identified in the scientific literature a mere ten years ago – was diagnosed after she began writing her memoir – and is revealed at the book's climax.
