Hey all! Don't forget to sign up for my upcoming webinar on July 17th on 12:00pm- Dispelling Dieting Myths. Sign up right here: https://gilaglassberg.com/items/dispelling-diet-myths I am excited to re-air this episode with Sylky Resnicoff- all about Pia Mellody's work. The last episode I aired with Rachel Lebowitz- she actually referenced this when speaking about her work with codependency. So go and give it a listen! Don't forget to like and share this episode! It really helps me continue to make this podcast possible! In today's episode, I spoke with Sylky Resnicoff. Sylky is a certified family life coach and specializes in relational trauma. She has extensively studied Pia Mellody's work, who is an expert in codependency, now called developmental immaturity. Pia Mellody believes that we are all born whole, as experts about ourselves, but as life goes on we lose this confidence in ourselves. If we're not given what we need in childhood, our growth can get stunted. She also helps women whose husbands are struggling with pornography addiction. She offers support groups, consultations and educational lectures because it's traumatic to discover your husband has an addiction like this. There is a lot of shame involved. Sylky empowers women to educate themselves and see that they have choice instead of feeling helpless. Sylky became a family life coach and thought it was fascinating. She thought she could reinvent herself with everything she had learned but began to realize that this wasn't enough. She needed to go to the parts of her that were broken. Sylky learned that you're only as strong as your foundation is deep and she realized she was lacking in her own foundation. She was learning a lot about healing, yet she felt a void that wasn't getting filled. She hit rock bottom at a certain point and a therapist introduced her to Pia Mellody's work. Pia's work comes with a lot of training so Sylky went and did an intensive workshop. For the first time, she really got her family history straight;  what she needs, what her children need and what her role in the family really was. Mellody teaches that anything less than nurturing is abusive to the child whether it's overt abuse or covert abuse. You may not realize abuse walking into someone's house. The parents may be very well respected but emotionally there may be neglect or harm done. Most people are not trying to hurt their children on purpose. For example, using the silent treatment can make a child feel like he doesn't exist, so this can be a form of abuse for a child. This may affect a child later on in life. There are so many people who think that they are made wrong while in reality there's nothing wrong with me but with the messages I was given as a child. We work through this our entire lives. When many parents learn about this they get nervous that they're making mistakes and covertly abusing their kids. However, when parents act in a genuine fashion and are good role models for their kids, their kids will see this. Your children just need to build up a good image of you. Pia's work is all about being human but being able to grow and change. If we nurture our inner child, parenting will become a much more natural process. Parents nowadays need more guidance. Every person who works on themselves knows that parenting is about growing yourself as a person. You can do certain things to help remind you who you want to be, like checking in on your kids everyday, but it's also about doing your own work. When we do our own work we relate to our marriage differently, we are more open to have harder conversations, we can own up to things and we'll have more strength to hear our children without taking things personally.  (See the full blog post on my website www.gilaglassberg.com) To see more episodes like this visit my website www.gilaglassberg.com. Understanding How Co-Dependence Differs from Interdependence

State of Mind

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2022 58:27

Episode #41: In this episode we'll explore the complicated and often misunderstood topic of Codependency vs. Interdependency. In codependent relationships, one person does much of the giving and at the same time tries to get their own needs met by controlling the other person. While some people will recreate these same codependent patterns in many of their relationships, others may find that they have just one difficult relationship, in which establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries is challenging. This situation often arises when we have a loved one with mental health problems, substance abuse problems, or their own unskillful ways of relating that pulls us into an anxious and imbalanced pattern of relating. Joining us for this conversation are Co-Dependents Anonymous (CoDA) member Jill and psychotherapist and recovery specialist Kat Zwick, LMFT. This conversation is not just for those who view themselves as having codependent tendencies, but for anyone who struggles with knowing what is and is not in their control. Most of us will likely encounter this challenge at some point, with some person—a child, an aging parent, a troubled friend or an intimate partner! If you are a parent, caregiver, or spouse to this person …. the odds are greater that you will wrestle with where to draw appropriate lines about who Is responsible for what. Join us as we talk about how to find greater personal well-being, even in those more challenging relationships. When Hobson was in her 30s, she joined the Starbucks Board. Then, she was approached by Howard Schultz, who told Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Gethin that Hobson was a prime candidate to be on the board of Dreamworks. Hobson jumped on the chance, joining a board which she describes as “Moguls ‘R Us.” She discusses her experience on the board for 10+ years, beginning as a “pipsqueak” in the room to later becoming Chairman and acting as chief negotiator during the Comcast acquisition. According to Hobson, the key to success for modern media companies lies in the refusal to stay in the past. She cites examples of Comcast, Disney, and Netflix as companies who evolve with advancement of technology and changing the demand of consumers. Hobson also predicts that streaming services will soon be re-bundled and streamlined, as unbundling is more costly and poses more technological challenges to consumers than traditional cable. Later, Wolpert and Hobson delve into the issues of race, gender, and mental health in America today. Hobson is the only Black woman who is the chairwoman of a Fortune 500 Company, which signals that there is still much progress to be made. She addresses the shortcomings of the corporate world when it comes to diversity in both race and gender, and how diversity initiatives oftentimes mask and perpetuate underrepresentation ----------- This episode is presented by: Stubbs, Alderton & Markiles. In the last two years, the hype around blockchain settled down, and now projects can focus more on development rather than managing attention. Many projects have gone from an idea to a pilot program or an actual implementation. However, we probably won't see patient medical records on the blockchain soon, says Robert Miller -  Director of Product Management and Strategy at Consensys Health. ConsenSys Health builds Ethereum-based solutions for cybersecurity, compliance, privacy, bioethics and identity, applying the deep technical capabilities of ConsenSys to advance the healthcare industry. The blockchain community knows Robert because of his regular newsletters about blockchain in healthcare. He is diligently following and reflecting on the development of the industry. We discussed why are patient health records on blockchain currently still a dream and which projects are slowly moving beyond the project phase. An interesting research initiative is MELLODY - (acronym for Machine learning ledger orchestration for drug discovery). MELLODY is a collaboration among 10 major pharma companies that are using a blockchain-based infrastructure and federated learning to speed up drug development. Robert also shared his view on MELLODY - and I also added the link to his analysis in the show notes. We also talked about the potential use of blockchain for vaccination certification and more. She also helps women whose husbands are struggling with pornagraphy addiction. You have made life choices and career choices along the way.  Those choices have implications.  Accept them.     Next piece of advice is "Stop trying to keep up with the Jones'". If you can't afford it, you have to say so. A friend wants a fabulous destination wedding in Italy and there's no way you have the money to go?  You have to fess up early. You'll stay friends as long as you don't flake out late.  Picking a restaurant for dinner? Be sure it's something everyone can afford. Don't get into the habit of always treating if you are the one with more resources.  Your friends do not want to be your charity case.  A caller has a questions about money secrets.  Should you loan friends money without telling your spouse?  Even with the best of intentions, Mellody says everything needs to be on the up and up.  No subterfuge. No surprises.  And finally, how about loaning money to friends or family? Mellody says yes, as long as it's above board and documented.  After all, if you can't count on your friends to help once in a blue moon, who can you count on?  But never loan more than you can afford to lose.  For more "You're the Best" Encore Interviews from the Satellite Sisters, go to iTunes or www.satellitesisters.com.  You can listen to Bill Clinton, Peggy Fleming, J J Abrams, and Nora Ephron among other solid gold Satellite Sisters conversations.  To order copies of "You're the Best", try amazon, vromans or bookstores near you.
