Two legendary actors. Two iconic performances. One showdown. In this week's episode, we're diving deep into the worlds of Jerry Maguire and The Wolf of Wall Street to unpack what makes these roles career-defining turns for Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio. We kick things off with The Casting, where we break down the behind-the-scenes stories that shaped each performance—from Cruise shadowing real sports agents and helping write iconic scenes, to DiCaprio fighting for years to get Wolf made and throwing himself (literally) into the chaos of Jordan Belfort's world. Then we dig into The Films themselves—Jerry Maguire's heart, romance, and redemption versus Wolf of Wall Street's debauchery, ambition, and downfall. We'll explore how both films use charisma and collapse to tell two wildly different American dream stories. And of course, we bring in The Critics—what did the biggest voices in film say about Cruise's emotionally layered performance and DiCaprio's unhinged, fearless energy? From Oscar nods to iconic scenes, we look at how both roles helped reshape the legacies of two of Hollywood's biggest stars. So, who wins the title of best performance? Is it Cruise's “You complete me” or Leo's lewd, lude-fueled spiral? Tap in for the debate, the deep dive, and maybe… a little yelling of “Show me the money!”
The 1969 Manson Family killings gripped the nation for their sheer brutality and madness. But left unanswered is exactly how Charles Manson turned a group of hippies into assassins through mere persuasion. The book Helter Skelter says Manson convinced his followers of an impending race war, one they needed to be at the center of. But journalist Tom O'Neill uncovered loose connections between Manson and the head of the CIA's secret program MK-Ultra. He says the Manson murders read less like a spree killing and more like the LSD-fueled mind control experiments the government had been perfecting. From Oscar-winner Errol Morris and Netflix comes “CHAOS: The Manson Murders.” The director of “The Thin Blue Line” and “Wormwood” returns to the subject of MK-Ultra, exploring whether it can be blamed for the famous crime spree. Was Manson really a failed musician-turned-cult leader, or did he get help from an infamous Cold War program?OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "CHAOS" BEGIN IN THE FINAL TEN MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. What were people searching for this awards season? From Oscar snubs to SAG Award winners and Grammy highlights, Google's Charity Mhende gives us the breakdown of February's biggest entertainment searches. You can visit Trends.google.com for all of your search needsYou can like Google on Facebook at: Facebook.com/GoogleFollow Google on Twitter at: Twitter.com/Google https://masonverapaine.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/0.-Charity-Mhende-February-Google-Trends.mp3 Google Trends Transcription 0:00 - Announcer: Mason Vera Paine. 0:01 - Mason: The month of February has come to an end, and to explain all the top trends for this month with us is Google Trends Expert, Charity Mhende. Thanks for joining me, Charity. 0:10 - Charity: Thank you for having me. 0:11 - Mason: For February, what was the biggest trending thing? 0:14 - Charity: Well, New York Fashion Week happened this past month. People were searching for all things clothing, fashion, and style. One of the most interesting trends was people searching for Calvin Klein as the top four collection and fashion show. Calvin Klein came back after five years to show their collection, and they also have a new creative director, which sparked a lot of interest from people across the country. 0:38 - Mason: Pretty neat. By any chance, did you see any of the pictures? I tried looking things up. I couldn't really find anything other than Brandon Fraser geeking out about his son being on the runway. 0:48 - Charity: I mean, it's always really interesting to see what comes up both in terms of street style and on the runway. One of my favorite things to do, especially on social media, is to use Google AI to search for what you see on your screen. If you see something on the runway, you can actually see how to shop for it yourself based on what you can find on Google's AI. 1:08 - Mason: That's pretty nifty. Is there anything else that happened entertainment-wise? 1:13 - Charity: Yes. People were searching for the Oscars. They weren't this month, but the SAG Awards also happened this past month. People were searching for things like Oscar snubs when the nominations came out. Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie were among the top two trending snub searches. People were also asking, has Timothée Chalamet won an Oscar? That was a top trending question related to the Oscars, and he hasn't yet, but we're looking forward to seeing what happens next month. 1:39 - Mason: Oh my God. I didn't even know the SAG Awards happened. February is packed. There was so much, the Super Bowl. 1:46 - Charity: In terms of the Super Bowl, there was a lot of interest because of, obviously, the halftime performance. People were searching also for questions related to Kendrick Lamar and the lyrics, but there were also questions during the match. Specifically, they were looking for game results. They were also looking for information on people like Tom Brady and everything related to the game. 2:06 - Mason: Yeah, right. Then with Kendrick Lamar, he just came off of winning Record of the Year, and it's like the Grammys just happened. Did that trend at all, the Grammys? 2:16 - Charity: We see trends on award shows and different things that happen in the news all the time. What's really interesting is how people come to Google to search for culture. This past month, we also saw a lot of questions around Black History Month. As you know, one of the key things is people are looking for Black activists like Martin Luther King, Ruby Bridges, and Rosa Parks. People come and ask all sorts of different things based on what's happening at that time. 2:41 - Mason: Yeah, something I learned last year, I didn't know that was a thing, but for all months, there's a theme. Was there a theme for Black History? 2:49 - Charity: There was. Up and down the country, people were looking for different Black-owned restaurants, clothing brands. They were also asking questions like,

Joined today by award winning film director and my childhood friend and teammate, Reinaldo Marcus Green. Rei and I talk about growing up, playing baseball together and how we argued over the Yankees and Mets. Rei talks about being a hot young rookie director and being given the script for “King Richard”, why it resonated so much with him and why he knew he needed to direct the film. He shares his first meeting with Will Smith, how he sold himself and why Jada played a role in Will wanting Rei to direct the film. We go over the pressures of telling the Williams sisters' story correctly, having to correct Will on his lines and why it was so important to include the other Williams sisters in the story. Rei tells us about the creative power he has, what he changed for the movie and when he knows his film is finally completed. Rei goes behind the scenes and talks about the importance of everyone on set from the costume designer to the lighting team. We discuss his newest project, “We Own This City”; about the corrupt Baltimore police department, why it's important to humanize even the bad guys, and why the conversation between police and POC need to continue to be had by everyone. From Oscar nominations to texting Jamie Foxx, Reinaldo shows why he bet on himself by taking out huge loans from NYU and why he's winning. IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3232264/

From Oscar-winning actor Donald Sutherland narrating the new children's book "Rainbows in Windows" that explains the global pandemic, to Dolly Parton reading weekly bedtime stories to give parents a break from home schooling, children's books have become more key than ever in recent months. Comics and cartoons are a powerful way to teach kids about Covid-19 but also help them escape from the real world.
Moderator Jenelle Riley (Variety) speaks with Writer/Director Andrew Heckler and actors Crystal Fox and Austin Hebert about their film BURDEN, which won the Dramatic Audience Award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. This conversation was recorded at the Landmark in Los Angeles on 2/28/20. When a museum celebrating the Ku Klux Klan opens in a small South Carolina town, the idealistic Reverend Kennedy (Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker) resolves to do everything in his power to prevent long-simmering racial tensions from boiling over. But the members of Kennedy's congregation are shocked to discover that his plan includes sheltering Mike Burden (Garrett Hedlund), a Klansman whose relationships with both a single-mother (Andrea Riseborough) and a high-school friend (Usher Raymond) force him to re-examine his long-held beliefs. After Kennedy helps Mike leave behind his violent past, the Baptist preacher finds himself on a collision course with manipulative KKK leader Tom Griffin (Tom Wilkinson). In the face of grave threats to himself and his family, the resolute Kennedy bravely pursues a path toward peace, setting aside his own misgivings in the hopes of healing his wounded community. From Oscar-nominated filmmaker Robbie Brenner (Dallas Buyers Club) and writer/director Andrew Heckler comes this dramatic true story of compassion and grace in the American South.

Little Red Riding Hood meets Twilight meets Murder On The Orient Express in this rather bizarre fairytale recalling directed by Catherine Hardwicke. Harry got bored, but John was compelled by the terrible camera work and ludicrously convoluted plot. Plus, Gary Oldman plays a wolf slayer with silver fingernails and a 20ft elephant, and that can never entirely be a bad thing... In the third and penultimate edition of our Halloween 'Season of the Wolf', we discuss the Twilight effect, Virginia Madsen's alarming new face, Julie Christie's scenery chewing and much more, before pitching some fantasy sequels that inclue a Law & Order-inspired fairytale crime drama and a modern-day sex horror whodunnit with a terrifying twist. We guarantee that both are more interesting than the original - although that isn't exactly a high bar to clear... ----- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch sequel, prequel or spin off odess to bring it back to the big screen. May we have your attention please? This week we're taking on a slightly less well-known movie than usual, but we definitely think it's worthy of a wider audience. Writer-director Lucky McKee's May is a surprisingly thoughtful and challenging indie-horror about a lonely and isolated young woman who takes a... creative approach to dealing with rejection. Joined by this week's special guest, May super-fan Kit Sheppard, we discuss the traumatic influence of creepy childhood dolls, Anna Faris' questionable acting choices and the sad fate of poor, sweet Blank with the cartoonishly large hair... We also brainstorm some sequel ideas including an all-star, mega-budget horror upgrade inspired by Aliens, an Orange Is The New Black-inspired crossover and a decidedly adult spin on Pixar's Toy Story formula. ----- Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a difference. Warner Loughlin has been coaching on set and privately for more than 20 years. Known for her warmth and intuitive approach, her technique shatters the myth that an actor's past emotional traumas must be the fuel or foundation for their work. In her earlier days in New York, Warner studied theatre with Lee Strasberg, Sonia Moore, and Michael Kahn (head of the drama department at Julliard from 1992-2006). Once in LA, Warner focused on film and TV, working as an actor, director and producer. She opened Warner Loughlin Studios in 1996 and has since worked with and shaped the careers of some of the biggest actors in Hollywood. From Oscar, Emmy and Tony nominees and winners, Warner is a star among the stars. Warner continuously works with Amy Adams, Ryan Reynolds, Zooey Deschanel, Ashley Williams, Valerie Cruz, George Lopez, Amber Valletta, Blake Lively, and Ginnifer Goodwin…just to name a few. While the demand for her time and expertise is high, Warner will always have a place in her heart (and schedule) for beginning actors. Warner studied Contemporary Literature and Shakespeare at Oxford University and received her Bachelor of Arts degree, with honors, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From Oscar and Emmy winning Sound Designer Richard L. Anderson (RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, Amazing Stories) and Shen Haofang comes the documentary BEHIND BAYONETS AND BARBED WIRE, Anderson’s directorial debut on the story of American POWs in World War II, who were surrendered after their heroic and hard fought defense of the Philippines. They were sent to the city of Mukden (today called Shenyang) in Chinese Manchuria by the Japanese Army, where they were condemned to spend the rest of their lives working as slave laborers in factories to produce war materials for their enemy. This is the story of these men’s fight to survive the brutal winters, disease, and even more brutal guards, while secretly resisting in any way possible. As General Jonathan Wainwright put it, they were “men locked away behind the bayonets and barbed wire of cruel jailers.” Co-director Richard L. Anderson joins us to talk about the bravery and ingenuity of American soldiers under the most dire circumstances. http://www.behind-bayonets-and-barbed-wire.com/

From Oscar- and Emmy-nominated director Kirby Dick and producer Amy Ziering, The Invisible War is a groundbreaking investigation into the cover-up of rape in the US military. Profoundly moving, the film follows the stories of several patriotic young servicewomen who were raped and then betrayed by their own officers when they courageously came forward to report. Both a rallying cry for the hundreds of thousands of men and women who've been assaulted and a hopeful road map for change, The Invisible War is one of those rare films so powerful it has already helped change military policy. Speakers: Katie Couric, Amy Ziering, Kirby Dick
