On Episode 222 I sit down with Robin Opie. Robin is a friend of mine and someone that I have gotten closer to during my time working with him at CrossFit Roots. Robin is a small-town Kansas kid who ended up throwing Shot Put at a very high level at Princeton. He went into the corporate world where he worked at multiple companies before landing where he is today working for CrossFit HQ. But what inspired me most about this story was Robin's journey to finding CrossFit. In his own words, CrossFit saved his life. And today we talk all about that story and how it got him off of the hampster wheel and day-to-day grind of the corporate world and investing more in his health and fitness. We talk about how, for years, he was reluctant to start anything to improve his health because he believed that if you weren't working all the time, then you weren't working hard enough. Robin explains that if he didn't get into CrossFit when he did that he was on a trajectory to weigh over 400 lbs. at this point in his life. It wasn't until his boss, Eric Roza, stepped in and paid for him to start going to CrossFit that things began to take a turn for the better. Now, Robin is hooked and the rest is history that is being written every single day.I was inspired by this story and it reinforced to me the power of CrossFit. Robin's story is one that is happening at CrossFit boxes all around the world and one that everyone needs to hear. All it takes sometimes is a little nudge to change someone's life and put them on a trajectory to living a happy and healthy life. It's stories like these that fire me up every single day to go to work and do what I do.Thank you all for listening and I hope that you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

What is primary care? In theory, it's a long-term relationship between a healthcare practitioner and a patient encompassing preventative health practices, acute illness, and chronic disease. In practice, the insurance system has created an environment where physicians are incentivized to see more patients in less time, and the doctor-patient relationship is suffering because of it. Julie talks with CrossFit CEO Eric Roza about the current state of primary care and why the direct primary care model gives hope for the future. Well before he became CrossFit's CEO, Eric Roza said if he could do anything, it would be running the legendary fitness company because he wanted to immerse himself in companies that make the world healthier and happier. That manifestation worked. Roza (a box owner himself) took the helm in 2020, leveraging his reputation as a well-respected leader and his experience as the entrepreneur who built and sold Datalogix to Oracle for $1.2B in 2015. This amazing entrepreneur, father of four, and all-around good human joins The Most Days Show to go deep on navigating life's transitions and transformations, pull the curtain back on being an entrepreneur, and shares why a particular Buddhist saying (“Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water.”) still resonates. Tune in for more insights.

Eric shares what he has learned through the many stages of his career that will help him guide his company to new heights of innovation and growth. Prior to CrossFit, Eric's past experiences range from being a Bain Consultant to the SVP/GM of Oracle Data Cloud. Prior to Oracle, Eric was probably most known for being a passionate, entrepreneurial leader that thrives on taking small start-ups such as Asurion and Datalogix into innovative, sustainable growth businesses. He sits on numerous for-profit and not-for-profit Boards trying to help them achieve the same success. You can read more about Eric in the Feb. 2021 issue of Men's Health in an article entitled “These two men are on a mission to save CrossFit.”Thank you to our episode sponsor Macrostax - www.macrostax.com

CrossFit Inc. has sold! Greg Glassman is out and the new guy Eric Roza seems to be exactly what the brand needed. Though I imagine you will see a mass re-affiliation from the gyms who had distanced themselves from the CrossFit name initially, Fortitude Strength will not be reaffiliating. The decision is layered and complex. Hell, we flew the flag for 5 years! We have a tremendous love for CrossFit and a training methodology we do not believe it reflects the brand and methodology that we are creating at Fortitude Strength. Why? Guess you'll just have to listen to find out.

“So, you have this term sheet, and the term sheet is non-binding, either party can walk away. The most important part of it is that you're agreed on some basics for the transaction, and there's what's called a no-shop or exclusivity period. Usually lawyers write that, and that says that the seller can't talk to anybody else. You can do a lot of work, spend a lot of time, spend a lot of money figuring out how this is going to happen. So, instead of talking to any lawyers, I just said I'm going to write this myself right from the heart. So, I wrote - I basically said, “Greg, please don't shop this deal or try to negotiate it in anyway. I'm not commodity money. I'm a passionate [person] who wants to spend the rest of his life building on your legacy.” And, it was my first version of this notion of being the world's leading platform for health, happiness, and performance.” - Eric Roza When CrossFit, Inc. announced that Eric Roza would be taking over as the new owner and CEO, the news was met with excitement and enthusiasm from the CrossFit community. As a longtime CrossFit athlete and affiliate owner, he has experienced first-hand the power of CrossFit to forge bonds and bring people together, as well as the challenges facing affiliate owners. Eric brings much more than just a passion for CrossFit to the table. He has a wealth of experience as an entrepreneur, business owner, executive, and consultant. Eric studied Economics at the University of Michigan, and completed his Masters of Business Administration at Stanford University Graduate School of Business. In 2007 he founded Datalogix and served as CEO until the company was acquired by Oracle in 2015. From there he led Oracle's Data Cloud. Most recently he's served as an executive in residence for a venture capital firm and taught entrepreneur leadership as an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. Eric is also an active board member for several organizations and supports charitable efforts focused on mental healthcare, education, and entrepreneurship. In his downtime, he enjoys working out with friends, skiing, mountain biking, running, singing, and playing guitar with his band, The House Cats. I first met Eric about a month ago, and we immediately connected over his vision to make CrossFit “The world's leading platform for health, happiness, and performance." I was excited to catch up with him to learn more about the behind-the-scenes process for taking over as CrossFit CEO, the key elements that have played a role in the transition, and his vision for the future of CrossFit. In this episode we discuss: Eric's fitness background and how he found CrossFit How CrossFit has impacted his mental health Eric's dream of owning CrossFit, and how that dream materialized How he assessed what needed to be done to transition CrossFit to new leadership The importance of identifying and communicating with stakeholders The inception and evolution of the CrossFit Community Summit The biggest priorities for CrossFit at the moment CrossFit's new mission to become, "The world's leading platform for health, happiness and performance." Why CrossFit for health and CrossFit for performance are not separate entities The notion of thinking “in the box” vs “out of the box:” expanding the idea of what a CrossFit box is, and bringing CrossFit to different audiences Who will be driving the decision-making process of CrossFit moving forward Three things Eric does on a regular basis that have the biggest positive impact on his health One thing he thinks could have a big impact on his health, but he has a hard time implementing What a healthy life looks like to Eric You can follow Eric on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Chris stepped into the world of competitive CrossFit relatively recently; however not as an athlete, but rather a manager with years of experience in rugby and keen to enable athletes to qualify & complete as a team on the CrossFit Sanctional circuit. With lockdown easing in the U.K., I sat down with Chris to talk about the formation of Nasty x Saxons and his role as manager of a team that consisted of a number of U.K. athletes. As an relative but informed outsider, Chris shared his perceptions of the challenges with a sport that is still in its infancy; specifically highlighting the costs incurred to compete by the majority of highly dedicated athletes. Very topical, with even Eric Roza himself stating “There aren't enough athletes that can make a living with CrossFit right now” in the recent CrossFit Town Hall Meeting. I talk a lot about the importance of our efforts to diversify the communities we serve with our health and fitness work. Today I'm going to read you an op-ed piece from Jason Burns, the owner of Meddle Fitness (a CrossFit affiliate on the south side of Chicago), which seeks to serve a more diverse community than is usually seen in a CrossFit gym.I thought he made some great points, so away we go. These are the words of Jason Burns. He writes:“In Chicago, Black families lost between $3 billion and $4 billion in wealth because they were denied mortgages in the 1950s and 1960s. My journey in health and wellness begins here. I operate Mettle Fitness—home of Bronzeville CrossFit, the only 100 percent Black-owned CrossFit gym in the city. I wanted to contribute to the economic development of a community that has been plundered and bring functional fitness to it in my own way. As an entrepreneur, I'm now building a safe community for others, a place where people transcend even their wildest expectationsIn a historic Black neighborhood, I've created jobs, enhanced quality of life, and started a fitness revolution. I saw the benefit of CrossFit as a methodology, but I also saw where the movement was lacking. I knew the power of the culture I grew up in could elevate it. For eight years, Mettle has done just that. But none of this would've been possible if I had spent my time looking for acceptance where it wasn't gladly extended.Today, CrossFit is wrestling with questions of inclusion, but that doesn't bother me much. It was never about acceptance when I opened a CrossFit facility on the South Side of Chicago. The point wasn't to assimilate Black people into the traditional, mostly white culture of CrossFit. I grew up with fitness all around me. My father was heavily involved in youth sports, and the camaraderie of being a part of a team has been a way of life for me for as long as I can remember. Bonds formed in college and NFL locker rooms gave me an appreciation for belonging.Community-based fitness has the power to create those same feelings. Because of Chicago's segregation, Black communities have lacked basic options and access. Individuals seeking these services often ended up in spaces where they didn't feel readily accepted. These individuals simply wanted to get fit in an environment they felt comfortable in. As a proprietor, I felt obligated to provide my community with a space where they were welcome to be themselves while also providing a fitness experience that exceeded any other.Mettle Fitness cannot restore the billions my neighborhood was robbed of in the years immediately before my birth. Still, Mettle's existence is a powerful statement of defiance. In a city and nation that devalues Black life, it stands. In a sport that was headed by an individual who is (at best) apathetic to Black concerns, Mettle Fitness is undeterred. (Eric Roza has since purchased Cross-Fit.) The same spirit my parents instilled in me, the drive that carried me to the NFL and to master the sport of CrossFit, I'm bringing to my community. My journey never required acceptance or even fairness, although it would have been far easier with them.”Thanks for listening this morning. Please be sure like, rate, review, and subscribe. It's free to you and means the world to me. I'm Ben Garves, and we'll chat tomorrow.
