In which the Mister and I check out RUSTIN (2023), which we caught on Netflix. From director George C. Wolfe and writers Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black, the film tells the story of Bayard Rustin (Colman Domingo, who is in contention for the Best Actor Oscar at this year's Academy Awards), the main architect and organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. While battling racism and homophobia, Rustin channels his power for the greater good and gets to work on organizing the largest peaceful protest in the service of furthering the civil rights movement. Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, Johnny Ramey, CCH Pounder, Michael Potts, Audra McDonald and Jeffrey Wright (also up for a Best Actor Oscar for his turn in AMERICAN FICTION) round out the star studded cast. The film clocks in at 1 h 46 m and is rated PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. This Thanksgiving week, we're giving thanks for 1963's March on Washington and the key architect of that peaceful demonstration, activist Bayard Rustin. The new Netflix film "Rustin" tells the true story of the openly-gay Black civil rights leader, an oft-overlooked figure in the quest for racial equality. Actor Colman Domingo, who portrays Bayard Rustin, tells Major he thinks the film "charges [viewers] to believe that [they] can make a difference." Co-stars Glynn Turman and Aml Ameen, along with composer Branford Marsalis, also stop by to discuss the lasting legacies of Black activists A. Philip Randolph, Martin Luther King, Jr. and gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. Jared Milrad speaks with film, television, and theater producer, Bruce Cohen, and film producer and co-head of Higher Ground Productions, Tonia Davis, about their new film, RUSTIN. Directed by George C. Wolfe, RUSTIN follows the life of Bayard Rustin (Colman Domingo), a dedicated civil rights activist and advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Aml Ameen). The film pays particular attention to his work with Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference and his termination from the organization due to his sexuality, as well as the prominent role he played in organizing the historic March on Washington in 1963. Cohen and Davis dive into working with the Obamas, the importance of shedding light on untold stories like Bayard's, and amplifying queer voices. We depend on your generous support of Rewriting Hollywood to empower new creative voices and share urgently important stories with the world. This week, we're wrapping up the month with the direct-to-video sequel to one of our first Aug-Heist movies. Spike Lee's 2006 film Inside Man was his most financially successful film, but a follow-up was stuck in development hell for over a decade, despite strong interest from all parties. However, in 2019, a sequel starring Better Call Saul's Rhea Seehorn and Sense8's Aml Ameen was released on streaming and VOD. But with a 35% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Inside Man: Most Wanted was not a breakout hit like the original. As we bid farewell to another year's month of heist movies, we wonder if this sequel is better than none, or if deserves to be behind bars. Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjgaLE16BOoAlfre Woodard's work as an actor has earned her an Oscar nomination, four Emmy Awards and seventeen Emmy nominations, three SAG Awards and a Golden Globe. The versatile Boston University School of Fine Arts graduate has portrayed doctors, judges, mothers high and low, queens, freedom fighters, suburban neighbors, POTUS and a comic book supervillain.Woodard's illustrious body of work includes an Oscar nominated performance in Martin Ritt's Cross Creek; HBO's Mandela, for which she earned an ACE award for her portrayal of Winnie Mandela; Lawrence Kasdan's Grand Canyon; John Sayles' Passion Fish; Joseph Sargent's Miss Evers' Boys, for which she won an Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe Awards; Spike Lee's Crooklyn; Gina Prince-Bythewood's Love and Basketball; Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys; Maya Angelou's Down in The Delta, and, most importantly, her intergalactic turn with Captain Picard in Star Trek: First Contact. We've enjoyed Alfre's astonishing range on screen over four decades, about which she advises "Google me!"She played Betty Applewhite on the ABC drama Desperate Housewives and Ruby Jean Reynolds, mother to Lafayette Reynolds, on HBO's True Blood. Woodard co-starred in Lifetime's hit remake of Steel Magnolias, for which she was nominated for Screen Actors Guild and Emmy Awards, and won a NAACP Image Award for her performance as Ouiser. Most recently, she appeared in the acclaimed drama 12 Years A Slave, directed by Steve McQueen, and Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, plus New Line's Annabelle, and the Netflix Original feature Juanita, as the title character. Somehow she also found time to star in Marvel'S Luke Cage as the diabolical Mariah Dillard, and she also appeared in the Apple series SEE, opposite Jason Momoa. Woodard also gave voice to Sarabi in Jon Favreau's Live Action The Lion King. Recently, her riveting portrayal of a death row prison warden in Chinonye Chukwu's Clemency, was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.Whilst building this illustrious career, Alfre co-founded Artists for a New South Africa, a nonprofit working to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and further the cause of democracy and human rights in South Africa and the U.S. For this and her anti apartheid activism she was honored with the Order of Companions of Oliver Tambo, that country's highest civilian medal. Alfre directed and produced, Nelson Mandela's Favorite African Folktales, which won the 2010 Audiobook of the Year, and garnered a 2010 Grammy Award nomination for "Best Children's Spoken Word Album." The audiobook hosts a collaboration of talent both broad and diverse, featuring: Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman, and Samuel L. Jackson. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed her to his President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. As part of her work on the Committee, Woodard adopted several high poverty and under-performing public schools around the country. She is an active advocate for the arts in education, largely through her work on the Committee's "Turnaround Arts" initiative, which was launched in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education and the White House Domestic Policy Council to narrow the achievement gap and increase student engagement through the arts. Now based in the Kennedy Center, Turnaround Arts is spurring the creativity, expanding the scholarship, nurturing the citizenship, and introducing possibility in the lives of 50,000 kids, while turning around 80 formerly 'at risk' schools nationwide. She says acting is her profession, but feels everyone's real job "is to learn how to love each other - in our households, in our communities," she has said. "We do that by working for justice."Woodard is unfazed by the glitz of celebrity, but is grateful for its opportunity to "get her to the mic". She remains fueled by the values she learned growing up in Tulsa. In November 2014, she was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, and took the opportunity to credit her parents in her acceptance remarks. Her parents, always mindful of the hardship of others, "planted the seed of humanity" in her as a child. "They allowed me artistic as well as personal freedom. They didn't say 'go out and conquer' or 'go out and accumulate,' they just said 'Go. Do it. Be it. Be yourself. Fill yourself all the way up, Alfre, and never, ever forget your neighbor.'"

Actor and director Aml Ameen walked us through his incredible career path, from riding the high of the success of British cult classic Kidulthood, to landing the role of D in Yardie after bumping into Idris Elba in an airport, to playing the fallible character of Simon in HBO's I May Destroy You to now, directing and starring the soon to be released first all-black British holiday film Boxing Day. When I was a teenager and music was still on cassettes, a mixtape was an act of love. The selection and sequence of songs were a kind of message to the listener that left plenty of space for their own thoughts and feelings. Back in June Think Again hit its fourth year and its 200th show and it feels like the right time to take a step back and revisit some of the places the conversation has gone this past year. I’m intuitive rather than strategic about choosing guests for the show and books to read—when it works, it’s an art rather than a science. And as with any art, themes emerge and recur in different guises. In this episode, I’m putting together some of my favorite moments of 2019, strung together with minimal interruption from me. So kick back and enjoy this eclectic collection, and feel free to write me through my website jasongots.com and let me know your thoughts, feelings, and insights. Or send me a mixtape of your own! Featuring: Joseph Goldstein, Benjamin Dreyer, Anaïs Mitchell, Martin Hägglund, Aml Ameen, Marlon James, Terry Gilliam, Jeff Israel, Eve Ensler, Tracy Edwards, Frans De Waal, Edith Hall, Lama Rod Owens, Elif Shafak, Robert MacFarlane Learn more about your ad choices. They say Confucius said “Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.” I did the research. Confucius probably didn’t say that. But whoever said it was right—revenge bites back. Victor Headley’s 1992 book YARDIE launched a genre of Jamaican pulp fiction. It’s the story of a life driven and destroyed by revenge, from the Kingston gang wars of the 70’s to the international drug trade of the 80’s. And it’s the basis for Idris Elba’s directorial debut—a movie of the same name staring my guest today, actor Aml Ameen. YARDIE, the movie, captures a slice of Jamaican life and musical culture you don’t often see on screen—the clash of rival sound systems and DJs at dance parties. And as the main character, D, Aml captures the complexities of a man haunted by his brother’s murder and torn between the paths of righteousness and damnation. Set in '70s Kingston and '80s Hackney, "Yardie" centers on the life of a young Jamaican man named D (Aml Ameen), who has never fully recovered from the murder, committed during his childhood, of his older brother Jerry Dread (Everaldo Creary). D grows up under the wing of a Kingston don and music producer named King Fox (Sheldon Shepherd). But before he can be convinced to abandon his life of crime and follow "the righteous path," he encounters the man who shot his brother 10 years earlier, and embarks on a bloody, explosive quest for retribution - a quest which brings him into conflict with vicious London gangster Rico (Stephen Graham).

Drunken Sake Shenanigans On this episode our Film of the Week is the hotly-tipped adaptation of a cult British novel about gangland youth, and although Graham is on hand to nurse Mick through his "Absolute Beginners" flashbacks, Idris Elba's directorial debut "Yardie" is a very different proposition. Bonus fact - star Aml Ameen was one of the kids on stage when Jarvis Cocker interrupted Michael Jackson's performance at the 1996 Brit Awards. After that we have two very different films for Off the Shelf, with the first being from our new friends at Network, who have kindly supplied Graham with the long-lost grindhouse loonfest "Miss Leslie's Dolls". On the other hand Mick dons his reading glasses for Arrow's release of the samurai classic "Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji!" - which is apparently very charming for seventy four minutes then deeply disturbing for another twenty. So it's a bit like this podcast then. Only longer. If you enjoy the show, send us a star rating on your podcast provider of choice. Plus, there are reviews of Searching and Upgrade, win tickets to see Marky Mark's new film, Mile 22, as well as a visit from potty-mouthed puppet, Detective Phil Phillips from The Happytime Murders, who's on hand (and on a hand) to tell us why dabbing is much better than rubbing.
