Continuing our celebration of National Safety Month, in this episode, host Dr. I. David Daniels will speak with Yara Carrillo, a Chemical Engineer by training and a credentialed safety professional specializing in providing services to workplaces needing safety-related documents, information, and training in Spanish. The number of Hispanic workers in the labor force has grown from 10.7 million in 1990 to 29.0 million in 2020 and is projected to reach 35.9 million in 2030. Hispanics are projected to account for 78% of net new workers between 2020 and 2030. The Hispanic proportion of the workforce has increased from 8.5% in 1990 to 18.0% in 2020. In 2030, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects Hispanics to account for one out of every five workers in the labor force, at 21.2%. Hispanic workers are not only a significant percentage of the workforce but the majority in many of the most hazardous occupations. The sector with the highest concentration of Hispanic workers is farming, fishing, and forestry, at 43.0%. In second place is building and grounds cleaning and maintenance, at 37.9%, followed by construction and extraction, at 35.7. One of the important keys to perception is the language that one understands. It is difficult to feel psychologically safe when the language used to transmit safety information does not match the language you understand best. While it would be a stereotype to suggest that all Hispanic workers don't speak or understand English, it would not be an exaggeration to suggest that many workplaces assume that everyone speaks and understands English. This bias can have catastrophic consequences for workers and organizations that care about safety. Yara will share her thoughts and experiences regarding bridging this divide and the value and importance of language in ensuring psychological health and safety.

To kick off our celebration of National Safety Month, in this episode, host Dr. I. David Daniels will speak with Nathan Benson, the Director of Occupational Safety, Risk Management, and Disability Services in Chatham County, Georgia. There are approximately 90,000 governments in the United States, divided into three categories: federal, state, and local. The public sector employs 20.2 million people in the US, approximately 14.5 percent of the workforce. However, when conversations about safety of any kind are had, workers in the public sector or left out. Injury rates tend to be significantly higher than similar work done by the private sector. Seven years ago, Chatham County, Georgia, decided to buck this trend by developing an occupational safety division and bringing in a 2015 National Safety Council Rising Star to lead the effort. Director Benson has been able to build the team and help the county through the global pandemic when less than 50% of the county's workforce could work remotely. He will share the work done to reduce worker injuries and create a culture where workers feel supported and less anxious about the rare occupation that they are injured at work.

The Dangers of Distractions at Work with Bill Doran

It's always a good time to focus on focusing, especially with June being National Safety Month, so today's episode is all about the serious consequences that can occur when we become distracted at work. And there are few, if any, people who are more qualified to discuss this than today's guest, Bill Doran, an Occupational Safety and Health lawyer with Ogletree Deakins. Bill shares one of his many safety stories which he has collected over his almost 30 years in the industry with listeners here today. Episode Highlights: Bill has unfortunately had to participate in a large number of accident investigations whose goal is to identify an unsafe condition/work practice that can be eliminated to ensure that a similar accident never happens again. Often, decisions are made when we are distracted by any number of factors that could be surrounding events, personal thoughts, stress, or just eagerness to get a job accomplished. One such situation that Bill remembers involves an individual and his crew who were involved in the task of refurbishing sections of the metal shell of an elevated kiln which required removing structure and material from both the outside and inside of the kiln shell. This individual was intent on completing the job, and, at one point after passing a sign warning of an open inspection door, he began removing the last debris and material from inside the kiln that needed to be cleared. While doing this, he focused on the plywood board that was covering the opening, picked it up, and then he inadvertently walked forward into the opening, suffering fatal injuries from the 20 foot fall. He wasn't taking shortcuts or risks he was an experienced professional who just lost his focus for a moment. This emphasis on getting the job done is the bedrock of the mining industry - it's the key to the industry success - but that same strength, overcoming all the challenges to complete the task can sometimes be a weakness in hindering your ability to see the more immediate hazards before you. You can't let your guard down - the job will get done, but it may be necessary to take a breath and an extra few minutes to consider the world around you. Toolbox Talk Discussion Questions: In this story, an experienced miner suffers a fatal fall from a momentary distraction. He wasn't rushing or being negligent, he just missed a hazard right in front of him. What can we learn from this story? As good as we think we are at multitasking, the brain can miss important pieces of information when you're jumping between tasks. How can we remember to focus back on the task at hand? Would anyone like to share a story about a distraction or something that took away your focus from a task? Quotes: “These experiences have taught me that no matter who you are, at any given moment, you can be just a split second decision away from a serious injury.” “No one is immune to these distractions. It doesn't matter how experienced you are, people concentrating on getting the job done, or solving a problem can focus their attention in one way and miss the hazard directly in front of them.” “That's the point. It's not easy, and it wasn't obvious. His focus was on completing the job. Everything that he did after leaving the outside area around the opening... took his attention away from the hazard that was waiting for him.” “One of the real challenges is constant vigilance, always being aware, slowing down, taking a minute.” “Distraction is human, and it's something that we all struggle with, and something that we want to really emphasize and highlight so we can try and prevent distractions in the workplace in any way we can.” Links: National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association website

And I thought it'd be interesting for us to talk about what safety is and how we think about safety in the context of productivity. And so I will start off with the fact that humans are risk taking creatures that's actually really good for our productivity, we have become not apex predators, but we certainly have become, you know, top or near top of the food chain on the planet, because of the fact that we are risks risk taking creatures, but we do that within a sense of calculated risk. The plan for the theme parks are still being reviewed and have not been approved as of the recording of this episode. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/06/downtown-disney-district-disneys-grand-californian-hotel-spa-and-disneys-paradise-pier-hotel-approved-for-phased-reopening/ The new Disney Parks Pass system was launched this week for Walt Disney World guests that had existing reservations at the resort hotels. Guests needed to be signed into the My Disney Experience login, and have an active theme park ticket to proceed through the system. Be sure to have your park ticket, any hotel reservations, and your party created before you begin for the easiest path through the system. On the first day, guests were then put into a virtual queue with a very inaccurate wait time. At that point, you could “view availability” much like the Flex Pass calendar system. Green showed all parks available, yellow for some parks available, and grey for no parks available. You select a date and the available parks are displayed. Disney has posted a Know Before You Go poster on what to know and be prepared for when you get back to the resort. Downtown Disney will be the first part to open and will require a few things from guests. Parking and entrances to the area will be limited. Guests will need to self-park in the Simba lot and enter Downtown Disney from the west entrance or walk from Harbor Boulevard on the east entrance. Guest’s temperatures will be screened and anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will not be allowed entry. Cleaning and sanitation will be emphasized with hand sanitizer and hand washing stations in key areas. Guests must bring their own face masks and wear them at all times, except for when dining. Physical distancing will be expected, along with limited capacity. Hours will vary by location and could be limited. Cashless payment is recommended, if at all possible. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/06/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-phased-reopening-of-downtown-disney-district-at-disneyland-resort-beginning-july-9/ Disneyland has started recalling cast members back from the furlough. The union representing food and beverage workers said that Disney was going to recall 775 cast members who will return to work on June 28th. 7 Ways to Stay Safe for National Safety MonthJune is National Safety Month! In this episode, I’ll share seven simple, easy ways to enhance your safety and the safety of your loved ones. With June being National Safety Month, I’m recording this episode for two of my podcasts. Those are, “Safe Living Today” and “Weird and Whacky Holidays”. Of course, Living Safely is neither weird nor whacky. As a former Chief of Police, Security Director and leader of the Life Safety and Business Recovery group for one of the largest Financial Services Companies in the world, keeping people safe is one of my passions.A mindset of safety is a wonderful way to enhance your physical and emotional wellbeing. It also can save you money and help you avoid accidents that bring on pain and suffering. Here are my seven safety suggestions:1. June 1 is the beginning of the hurricane season in the Northern hemisphere. Now is a great time to stock up on non-perishable food and water so you can ride out an extended power outage. Plan on at least one to two gallons of bottled water per person per day. If you’re using well water, you’ll need additional water for the toilet I suggest having enough food and water to sustain you and your family for at least a week and preferably longer. There is a “Use by” date on water containers, so check and make sure the water is fresh. Act now to stockpile adequate food, water, a working battery or hand cranked radio, fresh batteries, and at least two working flashlights. If you have pets, ensure you have adequate food for them as well. For a more expansive guide on stocking supplies and preparing for disasters, I’ll have a link to an earlier “Safe Living Today” episode entitled, “Hurricane Irma - Prepare and Stay Safe” plus the link to an excellent guide prepared by the Red Cross and FEMA linked in the show notes. YouTube version of podcast: https://youtu.be/jePlA_S5Xl8. Red Cross - FEMA Guide: https://www.fema.gov/pdf/library/f&web.pdf.2. Have a family meeting and go over fire safety procedures and escape routes. Remind everyone of the “drop and roll” method to snuff out clothes fires. Have a working fire extinguisher, working smoke detectors, and Carbon Monoxide detectors. If you’re using battery operated detectors, change the batteries. Even better, upgrade to the new long life detectors.3. Have a well stocked First Aid kit in your home and car. Ensure everyone in the family knows basic First Aid and CPR.4. Create a safety kit for your car. Flashlights, fresh batteries, a working battery or crank radio, blankets, water, and non-perishable snacks should all be part of your kit. Have cellphone charging cords in the car. If you have people with Android and iPhones, you need at least one correct cord for each type of cellphone.5. Ensure there is a working car jack, tire wrench, and spare tire in the car. Ensure all drivers know how to change a flat tire. Keep jumper cables in the car and ensure drivers know how to use them. I highly recommend having a portable battery charger capable of jumpstarting your car. You’ll find them on Amazon and other online retailers and they’re available at most auto parts stores as well. Remember to charge them every two to three months and then put them back in the car.6. Have a “Go Bag” ready that contains medications, copies important documents, and anything else you want to keep safe. Make sure you have copies of insurance policies, medical information, insurance ID cards, medical directives, drivers licenses, and Social Security cards.7. Look around your home or workspace and identify and eliminate any electrical, tripping, or other safety hazards. To summarize,Stock up on water and non-perishable food.Review fire safety procedures and ensure your detectors and fire extinguishers are working properly.Ensure you have a well stocked First Aid kit in your home and car and everyone knows First Aid and CPR.Have a safety kit in your car.Ensure you have jumper cables, a spare tire, a wrench, and a jack in the car.
