In this episode, Jake and Mike sit down with Dr. Chloe Carmichael, clinical psychologist and author of Nervous Energy: Harness the Power of Your Anxiety. Together, they dive into the benefits of free speech, the mental health advantages of self-expression, and the dangers of groupthink. Dr. Carmichael introduces nine practical techniques from her book to help manage anxiety, including mindfulness, emotion-based to-do lists, and mental shortlists for redirecting energy. They also examine cultural trends contributing to the overuse and medicalization of anxiety, including the financial incentives driving overdiagnosis and the diminishing role of spirituality in society. Parenting challenges, such as schools shouldering too much responsibility and limited parental involvement, are discussed as factors influencing childhood anxiety.Dr. Carmichael and Jake highlight concerns with the current mental health system, which often focuses on symptom management rather than addressing root causes. They also stress the importance of the cautious use of screening tools to prevent the pathologization of normal experiences. The conversation explores barriers to finding the right therapist, from financial limitations to insurance challenges, and concludes with a deeper look at the intersection of mental health and gun ownership. Topics such as red flag laws, cognitive dissonance in mental health diagnosis, and the shortcomings of research on gun ownership are all addressed.Send us a text

Carmichael, who is also the author of “Nervous Energy: Harness the Power of Your Anxiety,” joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what we know about the long-term effects of COVID-19 protocols on children. How do we overcome anxiety and achieve our goals?    This is a question I hear all the time, and my guest today, Dr. Chloe Carmichael, shares her tips for harnessing your anxiety, so you can get to your dreams and live your best life. She will walk you through her process of developing a strategy to overcome your anxieties.   I'm sure we all have a story where we've overcome something in our past that held us back from succeeding. But you can't expect to succeed if you don't take your anxiety in check. I'm going to share a few strategies that have helped me get my anxiety under control.   One of the most helpful things I've learned to help me stop thinking about things that don't matter and stop myself from getting anxious about things that don't need to be stressed out about is the practice of mindfulness.   If you're wondering what mindfulness is, it's the practice of being fully present at the moment. That's what helps me stay calm, clear and centered because it allows me to be aware of what I'm feeling without getting caught up in it.   You can use mindfulness to help get yourself out of negative emotions, and it's a great way to combat anxiety. And if you're having trouble with anxiety, it can be a lot of help.   Dr. Chloe shares her story about how she has learned to harness her own anxiety to help others feel more confident and relaxed.   Her book, Nervous Energy: Harness the Power of Your Anxiety, details her stepwise approach to evolving beyond current limitations. Dr. Chloe is an Advisory Board member for Women's Health Magazine, a featured expert for Psychology Today and has been featured on VH1, Inside Edition, ABC Nightline, the New York Times, Forbes, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, and more.   She explains how we can all learn to be less judgmental of ourselves and to accept ourselves the way we are.   Check out this episode if you want to learn how you can harness your anxiety for success.   Share your thoughts with us by leaving your comments.     Get this for FREE: Dr. Chloe's Carmichael Insiders Club 7-Day FREE Access https://www.drchloe.com/insider-s-club-free-gift-checkout

Dr. Chloe Carmichael is a world renowned psychologist, entrepreneur, and public speaker. She is also the author of “Nervous Energy - Harness the Power of Your Anxiety”, teaching people how to manage their anxiety. She's here to give a unique perspective on the overlap between hospitality and psychology. Listen to this week's episode as she shares #hospitality insights with Dan Ryan today! Takeaways:  There is an overlap when it comes to hospitality and psychology. There is a level of empathy that needs to be reached in each one. Reflective listening is when you are hearing someone talk to you but then you're able to feed it back to them in a concise manner. There is a healthy function to anxiety, so it's not healthy to want to get rid of it. The best way is to manage it and focus it in a constructive way. Mental Shortlist Technique is when you are hyper focused on something coming up, so to make sure you don't lose focus of everything else you make a short list of other things to keep you focused. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. It can be nerve wracking but in the long run it will be extremely beneficial and rewarding.  Taking care of yourself mentally is extremely important. Often we get so busy in our daily lives that we don't take time to focus, breathe, and relax and ease our busy minds.  Quote of the Show: 2:10 “When I even saw the title of your podcast, Defining hospitality, I got really curious about the etymology or the Greek roots of that word. So I was just looking it up and noticing that the Greek word in ‘hospa' is going to be traced to caring for people. Not only as a host, but that it also pertains as a guest. And I thought it was interesting to see it was the same route that we applied to hospital. So I personally have almost had that emergency room feeling like, get me to a fine dining experience or a great hotel. I need that, my soul needs to be taken care of. Because actually also in psychology, the Greek word, ‘psyche' traces to spirit. So I do think that there's so much overlap with psychology and hospitality, that level of empathy that we need to bring to people.  Links:  Chloe's Profile: www.linkedin.com/in/chloecarmichael Company website: drchloe.com Twitter: @DrChloe_ Book: https://www.amazon.com/Nervous-Energy-Harness-Power-Anxiety/dp/1250241219 Shout Outs:  0:14 Deepak Chopra 0:57 Entrepreneur Organization 20:26 Zone of Control technique 33:42 Baker McKenzie law firm 34:15 Corporate Counseling Associates 36:42 Flatiron District 50:31 YPO event Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s YouTube: https://youtu.be/dA03rKxaPIU

Yup! That's right! Not all stress is bad. Just like we can leverage anger to our advantage we can leverage stress to have a better life and improve our marriage. First off, you've got to recognize not all stress is the same. When we are growing, we are pushing ourselves, we're putting stress on ourselves. Maybe you saw it when you were trying to do one of the exercises from a Rewire Your Brain episode. You tried it but it was getting hard, making you frustrated and became stressed. That is normal. When we recognize that it's normal and part of growing we can start reducing the stress. (Actually if you've got a growth mindset then you wouldn't even become stressed!) Sometimes we do get stressed even when we're not trying to specifically. In these situations it's really important not to stress about stressing. In this week's episode, we are joined by Dr. Chloe Carmichael. Chloe Carmichael Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and author of Nervous Energy: Harness the Power of Your Anxiety. Today she is going to share with us four out of the nine anxiety tools she detailed in her new book to help successful people harness nervous energy. This Includes creating mental shortlists, emotion-based to-do lists, scripting anchoring statements, and scheduling worry time. Even before the pandemic started, many real estate agents were struggling with major stress. Thinking about a property they've had their eyes on, being in the process of a property rehab, and taking care of their family all at the same time! Dr. Chloe will show us simple ways to adjust and thrive through inevitable life changes, especially during these uncertain times and answer your questions to help you cope with stress or anxiety. So sit back, relax, and listen here for this mini therapy-session-like Q&A with Dr. Chloe!   In This Episode:  [ 03:36 ] Our guest, Dr. Chloe Carmichael's introduction. [ 08:06 ] Create mental short lists of five good, productive thoughts for when we are stuck obsessing and overthinking a thought that is no longer productive. [ 13:36 ] Are you doing everything on your to-do list, but you're feeling no connection to doing it? Or are you starting to procrastinate on your to-do list? Chloe recommends creating an emotion-based to do list to understand the different emotions you feel around a certain task. [ 20:44 ] Trina, from the audience, volunteered to share the item in her to-do list that's keeping her stuck around a VA who's working for her in her business. [ 22:32 ] Dr. Chloe gives Trina recommendations for her problem. [ 29:16 ] Nicole's input on Trina's situation [ 37:06 ] Scripting anchoring statements. Creating a statement that is so simple and straightforward that in times of panic or anxiousness, you are able to pull yourself back into rational thinking. [ 42:46 ] Thought replacements Dr. Chloe feels can help people in a variety of situations. [ 45:08 ] Making time in your schedule to worry instead of allowing those worrying thoughts to plague you constantly throughout the day.  [ 56:46 ] How can you press through stress brought on by lack of confidence? [ 1:01:05 ] How much time should someone spend self-actualizing? [ 1:02:11 ] Can self care action, which is designed to help you cope, actually become a crutch or addictive?    Takeaways:  Write down a mental shortlist of good things to think about to shift your mind from what you're currently fixated on that is giving you anxiety. Review your to-do list and identify the emotion that comes up when you're thinking about that certain to-do list item you have been procrastinating. Writing anchoring statements; creating a simple statement that we know is going to reactivate our ability to rationalize our thoughts. The zone of control is a technique where you can keep your focus on the thoughts that are in your control.  Studies have shown that affirmations can make us feel less secure when we're in a situation where we don't feel confident if the affirmation is too over the top. We discuss how our world is in the midst of a triple pandemic, one around physical health and the virus, another around nutritional health, and a third around mental health. If you're a high performer, and I'm guessing you are, you've probably achieved a good amount of success but still find yourself feeling a sense of lack, or unhappiness. If so, then this episode is for you.  Today I'm talking with Dr. Chloe Carmichael, the author of the new book (out this month) called Nervous Energy: Harness the Power of Your Anxiety. She holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University, and her practice focuses on stress management, relationship issues, and self-esteem. We talk about how I've always felt nervous energy has been a big helper in my life and in my career. But as I've gotten older, and definitely in becoming a mom, I can see the downside and even just habitual patterns of nervous energy that aren't the healthiest. I never really considered how to best harness that so-called nervous energy and anxiety and to funnel it in a better way, and that's what Dr. Chloe and I talk about it in the episode. She offers some simple tactics that you can implement right away, like her concept of “worry time” or the “to-do list with emotions.” All of this is a big focus of her book, which you can grab at nervousenergybook.com.   Topics discussed: The purpose of anxiety  Chloe's thought replacement technique How to implement “worry time” To-do list with emotions How to use breathing techniques to increase mindfulness & metacognition Connect with Dr. Chloe: Website   Book Twitter   Connect with me: Website   Instagram  Facebook  This episode first appeared at www.emilyrichett.com/episode-42.
