World Deutsch LinkedInAgile World Deutsch BuchseiteAgile World Deutsch WebseiteBig Thank You toSabrina C E NotoKarl A L Smith© 2025 Agile World ® News and Broadcast Network Geneva, Switzerland | Music by Debs from Detoxen (Facebook)

In honor of Essential Tremor Awareness month, this episode of Curing with Sound, features Michael Werner, a healthcare attorney, who has lived with essential tremor most of his life. After years of struggling with increasingly debilitating tremors that affected daily activities like eating and cooking, he chose to have a noninvasive focused ultrasound procedure. Michael's story highlights the critical gap in awareness about focused ultrasound technology, even among healthcare professionals. Despite having tremors since high school that progressively worsened with age, doctors initially recommended only medication or deep brain stimulation surgery without mentioning focused ultrasound as an option. It wasn't until a neurosurgeon at NIH asked why he wasn't considering focused ultrasound that Michael learned about this groundbreaking alternative treatment, which ultimately provided immediate and significant symptom improvements with minimal side effects. Key points include: Immediate Results – Michael's condition improved immediately following the two-hour focused ultrasound procedure, allowing him to write his name and hold objects steadily for the first time in years. Confidence in the Procedure – After successfully treating his right hand nine months ago, Michael plans to return for bilateral treatment to improve his left side. Advocacy & Awareness – As both a patient and healthcare lawyer, Michael participates in advocacy efforts, including a congressional fly-in, to raise awareness about focused ultrasound treatment among policymakers and potential patients. Michael Werner, longtime member of the Unitarian Church and a past President of the American Humanist Association, believes an effort to finally update the church's bylaws will extinguish the strong history of Humanism and leave the church open to the evils of post modernism. Werner also believes that the church is abandoning Enlightenment principles of reason, science, tolerance, affirming the inherent worth of all people, and replacing it with work on social and racial justice issues. Today we had a fascinating discussion with Dr. Michael Werner of MAZE Men's Sexual Health, a board-certified urologist who received specialized fellowship training in male infertility and surgery and male sexual dysfunction at Boston University Medical Center. Dr. Werner lectures and writes extensively on these topics in medical journals and books, and his practice is limited to male infertility and sexual dysfunction. More importantly, his concentration in these areas means he practices the latest and most advanced treatments and surgical techniques, ensuring his patients' greatest likelihood of success. Dr. Werner shares why he wanted to go into male infertility and his exciting work, including banking trans women's sperm before hormonal treatment at Sloan Kettering. He discusses his unique expertise in Extended Sperm Search Microfreeze (which helps almost 100% of men with minimal sperm retrieve sperm), sperm mapping, and vaginismus. We also had the incredible opportunity of asking Dr. Werner YOUR questions including which lubricants affect sperm, what a visit to MAZE might look like, sexual dysfunction in the Jewish community, and talking about masturbation with our children. Dr. Werner, thank you for your time and for sharing your incredible expertise with us! We learned so much and we know our audience will as well. Hey Radiolab for Kids listeners! We're back after a long hiatus with one of our favorite episodes from earlier this year. And a surprise...  We're cooking up something new and looking to get your feedback. Join our Radiolab for Kids listener panel by taking this 5 minute survey (https://airtable.com/shrjoLpn13qCHlXh0). We're listening and want to create more awesome stories for you and your families! ABOUT THE EPISODE: For much of history, tree canopies were pretty much completely ignored by science. It was as if researchers said collectively, "It's just going to be empty up there, and we've got our hands full studying the trees down here! So why bother?!" But then, around the mid-1980s, a few ecologists around the world got curious and started making their way up into the treetops using any means necessary (ropes, cranes, hot air dirigibles) to document all they could find. It didn't take long for them to realize not only was the forest canopy not empty, it was absolutely filled to the brim with life. You've heard of treehouses? How about tree gardens?!  This week we journey up into the sky and discover Forests above the forest. We learn about the secret powers of these sky gardens from ecologist Korena Mafune, and we follow Nalini Nadkarni as she makes a ground-breaking discovery that changes how we understand what trees are capable of.  A FEW VISUAL TRE(E)ATS: We first learned about the magical world of the canopy from this beautiful video from Michael Werner, Joe Hanson, and the PBS Overview team. It features Korena Mafune's research up in the treetops, as well as the people who have dedicated their lives to saving what's left of the old growth forests. We highly recommend checking it out!  And, if you're hankering to go climb a tree after this episode, you might enjoy browsing Hallie Bateman's wonderfully illustrated guide to the best climbing trees in NYC for a little inspiration. About this episode My guest this week is Michael Werner, founder and CEO of HomeX. Until 2003, Michael served as President and Vice Chariman for his family's 100 year old business, Werner Ladders. The Werner Company continues on today and is now a $1 billion dollar global brand…but Michael has moved on and launched a technology startup within a $500 billion market. HomeX is the first of its kind home services platform for both homeowners and service providers that is radically improving the complex and fragmented home services industry. One of the many things that peaked my curiosity about having Michael on the show was that I am just not a handy individual. Despite the fact that I could watch a YouTube video of how to change my garbage disposal I would much rather have an expert walk me through the process, or just do it for me. Well, that is one of the consumer solutions that HomeX is bringing to the marketplace, direct access to industry experts to guide you through the solution or enable you to hire the expert to come and take care of it for you. HomeX is truly changing the game for homeowners and service providers. And having just come off a $90 million dollar capital raise, things are about to get very interesting for Michael and the HomeX team. In this episode, you'll hear: The importance of reiventing an industry. The nuance of leading a legacy brand. Why global manufacturing is critical to business success. The importance that small business plays to our economy and communities. He is from Ebertsheim, Germany and currently lives in Ober-Olm, Germany with his wife and three daughters. He founded Hiwwe wie Driwwe (translates to 'over here as over there') 25 years ago! "Hiwwe wie Driwwe" is the only Pennsylvania German newspaper and a non-profit project. We discuss many aspects of how PA Dutch are so similar to their counterparts in the Palatinate in Germany. And also how they differ. Dr. Werner has been instrumental in building a bridge between the two places and similar cultures. We are so grateful for his support and for highlighting how important the work of the Deitsch or PA Dutch is to both us and to the Germans of the Palatinate.A wonderful conversation with a very important leader in our community!Links:https://hiwwewiedriwwe.wordpress.com/https://www.kutztown.edu/about-ku/administrative-offices/pennsylvania-german-cultural-heritage-center.htmlhttps://www.mennonitischer-geschichtsverein.de/geschichte/forschungsstelle/bestand/film:http://www.hiwwewiedriwwe.com/en/https://www.masthof.com/collections/new-books/products/hiwwe-wie-driwwe-the-roots-of-the-pennsylvania-dutch-dvdhttps://www.amazon.com/-/de/dp/B08DXNK5ZS/ref=sr11?_mkdeDE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=2BR811KL849CU&dchild=1&keywords=hiwwe%20wie%20driwwe&qid=1601124085&sprefix=hiwwe%2Caps%2C296&sr=8-1&fbclid=IwAR1cXG2i8BqabbQwY8-CFmPrZfIo7F2PO1rwWOEG3CFuMpwY-bfEqCun2wmusic:https://newpaltzband.wordpress.com/https://www.facebook.com/newpaltzbandhttps://newpaltzband.files.wordpress.com/2018/08/pressemeldung-pfc3a4lzische-band-new-paltz-vertritt-2019-im-rahmen-des-deutschlandjahrs-usa-die-pfalz-in-pennsylvania.pdfhttps://www.wunderbar2gether.org/homehttps://www.kutztownfestival.com/

Interviews by Brainard Carey

Mary Dinaburg has over 30 years of art industry experience, with extensive knowledge of the Asian art market. She is the founder of DinaburgArts LLC, providing curatorial advice and consultation for galleries, museums, institutions, and corporations, with a focus on business development and cultural branding. Her expertise also includes acquisition and de-accession of Post-Impressionist and Modern masters as well as established and emerging international Contemporary artists. Having recently returned to New York, Mary is now involved in a variety of projects both in the United States and abroad. During the 1980s, Mary served as the director of Jack Shainman Gallery. In 1993, she founded the art agency, DinaburgArts, where she not only continued her work in exhibitions and sales but also deepened her involvement in acquisitions and de-accessions. DinaburgArts was one of the first agencies to bring fine art to the fashion industry. This started with Saks Fifth Avenue when Mary developed the “Saks Project Art” program, making contemporary art an integral part of the corporation's identity and branding. Since then, DinaburgArts has worked with other brands like Hermès, and Firmenich. Additionally, Mary has consulted the Kirov Theatre in St Petersburg Russia on their cultural marketing; worked with CEC-Artslink on marketing strategies for nonprofit organizations; instituted a corporate art collection at 14 Wall Street; provided management consulting to Maison Gerard; and for three years curated Gallery W52. Mary also served as advisor and curator to the international law firm, Clifford Chance; establishing a comprehensive curatorial program intended to motivate both employees and clients, as well as broaden the firm’s cultural branding. This was achieved through revolving exhibitions, an acquisitions program, educational lectures, tours, events, and the law firm’s three-year sponsorship of The Armory Show. From 2000 onwards, Mary expanded her services into the Asian art market. Focusing her attention in South Korea and China (Shanghai, Nanjing, Beijing, and Hong Kong), Mary connected major international art galleries and artists - including Michael Werner, Sperone Westwater, Julian Schnabel, Sigmar Polke and William Wegman - with key collectors in Asia. From 2006 to 2016, Mary partnered with Howard Rutkowski to create Fortune Cookie Projects. The company played two cross-cultural roles: introducing major international artists - spanning from Impressionism and Modernism through Contemporary practitioners - to the Asian market and to bringing established and emerging artists from the Asiatic region to the West. Fortune Cookie Projects also worked with the Royal Academy of Arts (London) to establish the Encounter exhibitions in Asia and the Middle East. DinaburgArts continues to have an active presence in Asia and Europe, and having recently relocated to New York, Mary is currently working on a number of US based projects.

DESCRIPTION Humanist author Michael Werner writes: “For all the talk about reason and science, Humanism is really about a passionate love affair. It is a love affair with life, not a mythical hereafter. Humanism is a love affair with a progressive vision of civilization in which each of us can add to our growing library of wisdom, our evolving knowledge of what there is and what is truly important. None of the great achievements in history would have been possible without a love of the adventure of learning and the adventure of creating a better life. Our great cultural achievements in science, art, music, literature, philosophy, history, psychology, and political thought all inform each other and have been born of that long Humanist tradition.” How are you passionately in love with life? Since recording this episode, Michael has become Google's Lead for Circular Economy.Michael took on a challenge many people consider: biking to work for a month. He challenged himself amid product releases at work and family obligations as his wife traveled, so he couldn't just start. He had to plan and work at it. Even so, he created cheerleaders of his riding at Google among his coworkers. He led them by doing what others wanted to but didn't.I can't help wonder if his biking contributed to his promotion to a role of environmental leadership. Before all that, you'll get to hear about his spectacular blow out.Michael clearly explains his plans, actions, and results -- what worked and didn't -- so if you're thinking about biking more or any environmental action, you can use him as a role model.I'm curious if he'll follow his personal experience with leading people more at Google or steering Google beyond where he would have otherwise. Not everyone gets his or her dream job. Michael Werner did, on sustainable product design at Google and Apple. Since our conversation he's become Google's lead on circular economy. Whatever your thoughts on these companies, he is in a position to help lead them in areas of great importance. How did he get those positions? By working up the ladder? On the contrary, by leading from the start, before people were following.A major goal of this podcast is to show that if you want to lead, especially on the environment, a successful path is to start leading now with what you can. Waiting for a position to open doesn't work as well. Acting creates opportunities and Michael is an example.I'm glad to hear people within big companies with major inertia are working on sustainability, but they have challenges ahead. It's also rare to find people who get what I described as reusing and recycling, or efficiency in general, is tactical. Reduction is strategic, as I spoke on in episode 183: Reusing and recycling are tactical. Reducing is strategic. Most companies prefer recycling and efficiency because they drive growth, which makes people feel better, but is the opposite of reduction. I haven't looked into Google's practices.Note, this was an early episode. I didn't ask Michael first about what the environment meant to him, so I didn't connect his challenge to something personal. I got lucky that he had something in mind at first. But I think leadership works far more effectively when the leader makes the person feel comfortable sharing their values, which makes it feel more meaningful. It wouldn't have worked with someone less enthusiastic and didn't lead him to find his project as meaningful.Still, I think he's doing it for himself. We'll hear in his second episode. Since 2003, in a unique Earth-trailing orbit around the sun, the Spitzer Space Telescope has been observing in infrared an optically invisible universe dominated by dust and stars. Astronomers have been studying visible universe for thousands of years; however due to interstellar dust clouds and other obstructions to visible light, it was not possible to observe various regions of the universe. The Spitzer Space Telescope, the most sensitive infrared space observatory ever launched, has enabled us to study such optically obscure regions and processes in infrared. “The Spitzer Space Telescope has opened up a new window on the cosmos, yielding new perspectives and crucial insights into the genesis of planets, stars and galaxies”. Michael Werner and Peter Eisenhardt are among the scientists who worked for decades to bring this historic mission to life. Their book “More Things in the Heavens: How infrared astronomy is expanding our view of the universe” outlines an inside story of how Spitzer continues to carry out cutting-edge infrared astronomy to help answer fundamental questions that have intrigued humankind since ancient time: Where did we come from? How did the universe evolve? Are we alone? In this episode of Bridging the Gaps podcast, I speak with Michael Werner, one of the authors of this insightful book. Discussing various features of Spitzer’s mission and numerous topics covered in the book, this podcast presents a fascinating view of how infrared astronomy is aiding the search for exoplanets, enabling us to study exoplanet atmospheres, and is transforming our understanding of formation of stars and galaxies, and of the history and evolution of our universe. Michael Werner is a senior research scientists at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. He has been the lead scientist for the Spitzer Space Telescope since 1984.

Hi. Michael Werner here. I’m the CEO at SimpleK12.com, the home of the Teacher Learning Community. Over the last 30 years, we’ve been helping teachers learn and explore the intersection of technology and the classroom. In recent years, much of this learning has taken place inside the Teacher Learning Community. One of the most frequent requests we’ve had in the last year is for other ways to access the great content that our presenters share in the over 600 live webinars we produce each year. Of course, inside the Community, we offer our members complete access to archived webinar recordings that they can view on their own, any time and anywhere they like… It’s what we like to call: Professional Development in Your PJs. That’s why, if you’ve been around SimpleK12 at all, you’ll notice the bunny slippers as part of our logo and in other things we do. Actually, getting a pair of real baby blue bunny slippers from SimpleK12 is something that some of our Community members go to great lengths to obtain. But, what if you’re not at a PC or able to view a live webinar on a mobile device, such as when you’re driving, or when you’re working in your garden or kitchen perhaps? That’s what led us to this new podcast. In each episode in this series, we’ve extracted the audio from a webinar recording and placed it into the podcast. Now, you might ask yourself, can the audio alone, that was extracted from a presentation that included visual or video components, be useful? Well, and this may surprise you… after several tests with dozens of different webinars, we concluded that “well, yes, it does translate quite well.” Yes, there is the occasional point, in one webinar or another, when you might have a question while listening without aid of the full webinar itself or other visual reference. But, those times are rare. Yes, if that does become an issue, on the FreeTeacherPD website that accompanies this podcast, we provide a link to the full recording of the webinar inside the d our most popular webinar sessions to provide you with teacher professional development on the go. So, slip on those bunny slippers and get ready for some Professional Development in Your PJs. Let’s get learning!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBpZDy_ISkU&feature=plcp In this episode of China Money Podcast, guest Michael Werner, senior research analyst covering the Chinese and Hong Kong banks at Sanford Bernstein & Co., discusses Chinese banking stocks, their exposure to local governments and the property sector, and whether Chinese banks will see their non-performing loan ratios skyrocket. Listen to the full interview in the audio podcast, or read an excerpt. Q: First, let’s look at Chinese banking stocks. In terms of valuation, are they attractive? A: I still think the banks are attractive. We’ve seen a very strong increase in terms of the share prices over the past three to four months. But I still think you will get incremental news that will help the valuations of the banks. As China’s Central Bank eases monetary policy that will help with valuations, thought it might not be the best for earnings. I still think for the next two to three months, we still have some upside for the banks. Q: Now let’s turn to the fundamentals of the banks. Many people are concerned about the banks’ exposure to the property sector and local governments. How big a risk are these? A: Yes, these are certainly risks to the banks. But I think the market has overstated the risks. We really saw that toward the end of last year. The market was pricing in for some of these loans to go to zero in terms of valuation, which in our view is simply not going to happen. The listed banks that we cover, they had around 11 to 12 percent of their loan book exposed to local government loans. On the property side, you have around 15 percent going into residential mortgages and maybe another 10 to 12 percent going into commercial real estate. In our view, the residential mortgages are very safe with very low loan-to-values. There is a very good track record of people paying off these loans. On the local government financing vehicle side, certainly there will be some problems. But I think the bulk of the loans are going to end up healthy. But there will be a good five to ten percent of the loans that will have trouble repaying. That’s a couple of years out, and the banks will have enough time to earn up enough reserves to provision against that. On the commercial real estate side, the banks have actually reduced their exposure. They do have exposures, but they tend to have exposure to the largest, the best and the most liquid of the property developers. So I don’t think that will be a problem. The largest concern that we have are the local government financial vehicle (LGFV) loans. Q: So, where do you think the non-performing loan ratio will peak? A: Our best guess right now is around 2.5 percent. Right now, the NPL ratio for the whole banking system is around one percent. Getting into 2 or 2.5 percent in the next couple of years is actually in line with what we have seen in other countries that experience slowdowns. We think the Chinese economy will slow down to 7 to 8 percent at the end of this year to early 2013. Q: So are you saying there are not as much trouble as people fear? A: That’s absolutely correct. What we have seen in China is relatively good underwriting standards. I think that Chinese banks are going to surprise people on how well they are provisioned and what the ultimate NPL ratio will be. Some people have been forecasting 8 to 12 percent (NPL ratio). That does not seem likely in our viewpoint. The government will definitely help put in place policies that will mitigate these risks. Just like during the past few years, the banks have been earning a lot of money, and the government has put in place very restrictive policies in terms of capital and provisioning. Now on the other end, when economic growth is slower, the regulators will relax some of those restrictive measures. That counter-cyclicality (in policies) is actually positive for the banks.
