I got to interview Nicholas Hinrichsen and Christopher Coleman. Nicholas and Christopher met at Stanford Business School in 2011. They quickly became friends and bonded over their international backgrounds and families. After graduating in 2013, the duo started a company called Carlypso aiming to bring used car sales online. In 2017, the founders sold their business to Carvana: with hindsight, they 'started a used car company and sold a software business.' After leaving Carvana, the two founders started a digital auto loan refinancing platform called WithClutch.com. The goal is to help Americans improve their credit and lower their monthly payments through a few clicks. We spoke about: Their journey to now. What motivates them. Weaknesses they turned into strengths. Advice for the audience. And much more. This episode is sponsored by Nova Zora Digital experts in digital marketing. Their new business is all around helping Americans save money on their auto expenses and insurance and is a great angle to realize savings. “the most important thing in entrepreneurship is get started. It's so easy to think about the business and an idea and how to provide value and find reasons not to do it. It's so easy to talk yourself out of doing something versus into doing something. So, my advice would be to just get started, do something. The most important thing is to get to a no quickly. You need to find out quickly why the idea that you have in your mind doesn't work. And when you do that you will experience surprises by talking to customers from which you can learn and develop new hypotheses until you find a business that works”…[Listen for More] Click Here for Show Notes To Listen or to Get the Show Notes go to https://wp.me/p6Tf4b-8Py

Especially today, we need to learn to adapt and discover how to do everything online. It is imperative as everything is shifting to online commerce. He says, “If you are looking to create an online business, connect with someone who has done it before or is currently building something similar to what you are doing”. He suggests 3 things to get started in the online space: Be consistent.Be flexible. Just get STARTED!! Mistakes will happen- Use them to learn. Failure is just an opportunity to learn. The bar to what is a good first step to take a start up is too high. So people have to high of expectations. So they start thinking about ideas and talk themselves out of doing things. The bar to get started is really low you just have to take a step. So just go. In our case we want to refinance our loans, what does that mean? We need to talk to people who have an auto loan, so talk to them. The second you start hesitating saying yah I talked to them, I don't know what to offer because I don't have any lenders then you're stuck in this chicken leg problems that you have all the time in a start up. Then you talk yourself out of doing things. So you have to ignore that inner voice. Just do what feels like a mini step toward the right direction. And then another one and another one. Force yourself. The best way to get started is to get started. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-inventive-journey/message

Some things I know for sure, Americans love cars. And when we buy a car most of us out there are buying more than just the car. We are also buying a payment. Based upon your credit score, that payment can vary drastically, sometimes by hundred of dollars. I can hear my mom saying -- never let your credit score get under 800. Those best practices alone have saved me thousands of dollars over the years. And a ton of grief from my mom.  Today on the show is Nicholas Hinrichsen.  Most credit unions continue to wrestle with too many deposits and too few places to park that money profitably.  Call this Part 3 of the CU2.0 deep dive into lending in the pandemic era and that is because Barclay Keith, CEO of Artis Technologies, has developed tools that will enable a credit union to empower business members - think home improvement retailers, contractors, jewelers, etc. - to initiate personal loans to consumers, typically in the range of $3000 to $65,000.For the credit union, this just may be a high yield lending arena that also may well bring in new members. For the business, a fast, convenient way for a shopper to borrow may bring in bigger and more sales. For the consumer, this may be a quick and easy way to borrow at competitive rates.Win-win-win.For the consumer it typically takes minutes to complete a loan app, a process that can be initiated and completed at the retailer.  The underwriting is AI powered, there's instant KYC verification, and the lending institution - the credit union - gets to set its own policies. Some may not want to lend to subprime borrowers, others may.  Some may want to lend only to super-prime borrowers, many will have a broader standard. Artis Technologies lets the lending institution set the policies it is comfortable with. The conversation with Keith in this podcast is a broad look at how the Artis tools work and the benefits that may come to credit unions that deploy them.Part 1 of the new lending tactics series is #113 with Sherif Hassan on small business lending.  Part 2 is #114 with Nicholas Hinrichsen on opportunities in refinancing car loans and also lending to subprime car buyers.   You know you have money on hand you want to put to work.  Listen to the CU2.0 trilogy for ideas you can use today.Barking alert:  There is some barking and growling in this podcast, noises that defied filtering software used in editing the podcast.  The podcast is clearly audible.  And no animals were injured in recording the podcast.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Call this Part 2 of our smarter lending for credit unions. The recent episode, #113, explored small business lending with Capiform's Sherif Hassan. Listen here. This week it's time for something entirely different.Happy with your car loan portfolio? Many credit unions are anything but and this has become a crucial issue as most are awash in deposits and now are hunting for profitable places to put that cash to work.Car loans could be it. But indirect lending...not so much.Enter Nicholas Hinrichsen, an online car sales veteran who co-founded an online used car marketplace in 2015 when he raised $10 million in venture capital. They sold that business in 2017 to Carvana, which by now has grown into one of the nation's biggest used car retailers. After logging three years at Carvana he is again starting up a new company, with $5 million in venture funding, where the aim is to help credit unions better sell car loans to their members.Hinrichsen knows car loans and he also knows about credit union dissatisfaction with indirect loans.  He has a better idea: helping members refinance existing car loans issued by third parties, converting them into credit union owned loans.Credit unions can win that fight, said Hinichsen, because usually their loans are better, at lower interest rates. Most credit unions, he admits, do "spray and pray" marketing, sending out mailers to all pre-qualified members. In this podcast he tells a smarter, more cost effective way to contact the right members, ones who just might be prospects for car refinance.Keep listening because he has an idea for tools that will essentially pre-populate a loan app for a member, using data the credit union already has. So filling out a loan application literally takes seconds. And another - intriguing - idea he has is about how to profitably make sub-prime loans to existing members and, in the process, to create a path for them to get lower interest rates going forward. Just that may be a core credit union mission, especially as more members deal with economic pains of the pandemic. You know you want to issue more and more profitable auto loans. This is a podcast you have to hear.Contact Hinrichsen here.  The company is named ClutchLike what you are hearing? Find out how you can help sponsor this podcast here. Call this Part 1 of our smarter lending duet.  Part 2, posting tomorrow in podcast 114, is on smarter car loans with Nicholas Hinrichsen. You don't want to miss that one. PPP loans just may have awakened credit unions to the immense opportunity there is in small business lending.  That's what Sherif Hassan, CEO of fintech Capiform, believes.  The opportunity is there. But to win that business credit unions need to speed up their lending process, said Hassan, and they also need to create a more efficient process that cuts costs.Automation - smart technology - is the key.  At many credit unions, the typical cost for funding a small business loan is around $3600, said Hassan.  Capiform's tools  get that cost down to maybe $360.At that cost, suddenly making smaller loans - maybe $50,000 or $75,000, loans that often are what small businesses want - is realistic.Community banks have long had a lead in small business lending, but CU2.0 Podcast listeners recently heard Steve Bruyn of Foresight Research say that his data shows a huge drop in customer satisfaction at community banks. That's an opportunity for credit unions.Add in the comfort many credit unions gained in the PPP program - where they learned they could successfully deal with small businesses and also with the federal government - and the path to more loans for credit unions is clear. It comes at an ideal time. Many credit unions are drowning in deposits. Small business loans are a profitable path to safety.Don't many fintech lenders want that same market? They do. But credit unions - with their community focus - have a fast track to succeeding in that battle. Listen up as Hassan tells why.You may have heard Hassan's earlier podcast. Stanford GSB grads discuss MBA admissions, entrepreneurship and affordable car loans [Show summary] Nicholas Hinrichsen and Chris Coleman, startup co-founders who earned their MBAs at Stanford GSB, return to Admissions Straight Talk to share what they’ve accomplished as entrepreneurs since earning their MBAs. Chris Coleman and Nicholas Hinrichsen share how their experiences at GSB helped them grow their startups [Show notes] So, you want to be an entrepreneur in something using tech. Or maybe you're interested in tech product management. Should you get an MBA? Is it a waste of time and money that you could better spend learning on your own, founding your own business? Two Stanford GSB grads are here to share their perspective, reflecting seven years of successful entrepreneurial experience since earning their MBAs. Nicholas Hinrichsen and Chris Coleman, who were previously guests on Admission Straight Talk in Episode 88, both graduated from Stanford GSB in 2013. While at GSB, they founded Carlypso, which was acquired by Carvana in 2017. Since then, they’ve founded a new venture, WithClutch. When we last spoke, you both had recently graduated from Stanford GSB, and you were running Carlypso, which you had founded as MBA students. What's happened since then? Can you bring us up to date? [2:09] Chris: A lot has happened since then. When we talked, I think we were going through Y Combinator. We actually ended up pivoting the business into a new model since that time. Carlypso was this sort of peer-to-peer car sales platform. We ended up pivoting to being a direct wholesale channel where we sold cars, leasing to companies that can't sell directly to the consumer but have to sell through these wholesale auctions. We became a virtual dealer of sorts. We built software that said, "Okay, what are the cars that we think are good for consumers? How do we figure out how to use performance marketing to our advantage so that we can market the right car to the right consumer?" We had a pretty good handle on that. It was a good business. It wasn't a great business because it required very, very heavy operations, actually moving around 4,000-pound pieces of metal all the time, rather than bits and bytes. The software that we built ended up being more valuable than our end-value prop to consumers. And so we sold the software to Carvana, and ended up joining as executives there. Nick ran the sell-to-Carvana business of buying cars from consumers, and I ran product for the initial part of the consumer experience, from the homepage, search page, and product pages. We spent three years there. It was a great three years of seeing the company go from early public company to the company everyone else is aiming to beat. That was a really fun ride, and we got to know some of the executives there very well who were super helpful and had very different skill sets than us. Now we've gone off to start a new thing again. Me and Nick have just started WithClutch, which is sort of a platform for saving consumers on their automotive expenses. Nick: Our first employee at Carlypso ended up applying to business school when we sold. So, business school plays lots of roles in our lives. The person at Carvana who we touched base with to “compare notes” (when what we really wanted was to sell the company) happened to be one of our classmates from GSB. I had worked on a student-run event with her, and Chris had been on a student trip with her. Thankfully, GSB reappeared in our lives multiple times. I don't think we would have made it to where we are without our experience at the GSB, frankly. Silicon Valley tends to disparage the MBA. When we spoke in 2013, you were very happy you did your MBA. Do you still think the time you spent at GSB was time well spent? [5:34] Nick: There are so many dimensions to it. If you go into it thinking it's an academic experience, you'll walk out of it with so much more than what you've learned.

This week’s guest Nicholas Hinrichsen not only did that when it came selling to cars alongside his friend and business partner Chris Coleman via their company Carlypso. Nicholas and Chris now look to do it in the auto loan refinance space with his latest venture With Clutch. Nicholas shared a lot of great tips and tactics when it comes to both being a founder and finding your niche in the business world. “Don’t Let A Good Crisis Go To Waste.” Please take note of the quote Nick shared during our conversation and find ways to make the most of this current climate and do those things you’ve been putting off or were uncertain about doing. My Future Business Interview with Nicholas Hinrichsen #refinance #withclutch # nicholashinrichsen Hi, and welcome to the show! On today's My Future Business Show I have the pleasure of spending time with the co-founder of multiple successful automotive-related start-ups, Nicholas Hinrichsen about saving money on your car loan and what it takes to start a new business. Nicholas's first experience as a start-up co-founder, was with a company called Carlypso after graduating from Stanford Business School in 2013. During that time, Nicholas and his co-founder, Chris, went through YCombinator (same start-up accelerator as AirBnb, DoorDash, Stripe, Reddit etc) in 2014, and raised a total of $10M in venture funding by 2015 and sold the business to Carvana.com in 2017. From there, Chris and Nicholas joined Carvana pre-IPO, went public at a $2.5bn valuation and are now worth $25bn. Carvana is the most valuable used car retailer in the U.S. Nicholas and his co-founder continued on at Carvana for 3 years and left in June 2020 to start a digital auto loan refinancing platform, where their aim is to help Americans with challenged credit to address income inequality. To give context to today's call, and to help better explain ‘With Clutch', 100,000,000 Americans have a car loan and more than 20% of car owners are overpaying on their auto loan rate. In 2019, more than 47% of all funded mortgage applications were refinancing's. Meanwhile, barely 5% of all funded auto loans were refinances. On the one hand, Americans simply don't know that they can refinance their auto loans and save thousands of dollars. On the other hand, the process of refinancing your car loan is far from fast and easy: the process is usually inconvenient, requires several phone calls and emails, and you only find out what your total savings are once you've gone through this cumbersome and tiring process. Enter ‘With Clutch' which is a fully digital platform that lets car owners like you refinance their vehicle loan from the comfort of their own home and 100% online. No need to set a foot in a bank or credit union. You can lower your rate or get cash in as little as 20 seconds. The thing that stood out for me when talking with Nicholas, is his approachable manner which, as he mentions, is an important quality to have when working with hundreds of people in a team environment. This content-rich call has a lot to offer start-up entrepreneurs wanting to learn how to be successful, and also for those who are looking for a better deal on their ride. Nicholas then raised a total of $10 million dollars, went through the startup accelerator YCombinator and sold his business to Carvana in 2017.After leaving Carvana, Nicholas and his co-founder Chris Coleman joined forces again to build a digital platform to refinance auto loans, called WithClutch.com. Nic and I had a great talk about the future of financial tech companies and how specifically his new venture can help college students or anyone who had bad credit, is now improving their credit score and help them refinance their auto loans.SUBSCRIBEYou can subscribe to The Travel Wins Podcast on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, YouTube, iHeart Radio, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Spreaker, Podnews, Castbox, Overcast, Breaker, Pocket Casts, Radio Public, and Spotify.Intro song “Road Trip” by Robin Tricker#fintech #stanford #stanfordbusiness #siliconvalley #carvana #withclutch #nicholashinrichsen #fundraising #entrepreneur #businesstravel #jobsthatinvolvetravel #careersthatinvolvetravel #businesstravelcareer #businesstraveljobs #thetravelwins

Today's guest is Nicholas Hinrichsen, who graduated from Stanford Business School in 2013 and started an online car dealership right after. Together with his co-founder, Chris Coleman, the two entrepreneurs joined the startup accelerator YCombinator in 2014 before raising a total of $10M in Venture capital by 2015. In 2017, the two founders sold their business to Carvana.com. After exactly 3 years with Carvana and less than five weeks ago, the two left Carvana to start up again: the founders started by creating a website about auto loan refinancing-related questions, then built an auto loan refinance calculator and ultimately founded the company at WithClutch.com. In this episode we discuss what led him to Stanford to pursue his MBA, where the idea for the first company came from, and what he hopes for with their new venture. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Nicholas Hinrichsen and his business partner, Chris, kinda hit the jackpot with a start-up called Carlypso in 2013. After a few modifications, they sold it in 2017 to a company you might have heard of: CarVana.com. Nicholas talks about keeping an open mind and rolling with the changes on that start-up, as well as a new venture he's jumping into.  A startup is not a sprint, not even a marathon ... probably more like an ironman. But not all men are made out of iron and therefore, I believe its worth talking about how male startup founders need an outlet to share their emotions and a community that serves as a foundation of strength. Founders ALWAYS feel lonely. Nicholas Hinrichsen was born and raised in Germany and played on the German National Golf Team and studied Computer Science and Finance in Germany, Chile, and Australia. At the start of his career, he looked into consulting and investment banking but instead joined a renewable energy startup that invested in projects in China and India. In 2011, he moved to the US to get his MBA at Stanford Business School, and by 2013 he started a company called Carlypso. He brought that startup through YCombinator in 2014, raised $10 million in venture funding by 2015, and sold the company to Carvana.com in 2017. Carvana went public at a market cap of $2.5B and is now the most valuable used car retailer in the US. Nicholas and his co-founder, Chris Coleman, recently left Carvana to start WithClutch.com, a fully digital platform that lets car owners refinance auto loans from the comfort of their own home. The team at WithClutch.com has seen that in the US, only 5% of auto loan applications were refinancing, yet 47% of all funded mortgage applications were refinancing. So, they are going to change that!   “To succeed as a startup, all you need to do at the very beginning is to leave the building and talk to customers.” Nicholas Hinrichsen   Worst investment ever Young investor When Nicholas was 16, the only thing he knew how to do well back then was playing golf. Then all of a sudden, his friends in school, even some golfers, started talking about investing in technology companies. Nicholas had about $2,000, which was a lot of money for him at the time. His friends told him to invest the money because he could easily 10x that money. Afraid to miss out As everyone around him continued to invest in the tech companies, Nicholas decided to look into it because he felt like he was missing out. He signed up for an account online, went to the physical branch to verify his identity, and then eventually got access to the stock market. Now with an account, Nicholas could shop around for a company to invest in. But with so many options, he was baffled. One of his friends advised him to buy some magazines and then just read about the stocks in these magazines because the magazines wouldn’t recommend buying those stocks if they weren’t the best. And that’s precisely what Nicholas did. Making his first investment and mistake Nicholas didn’t know any of the companies in the magazines, but one resonated with him because that happened to be Germany’s biggest telecom. He felt that this would be a good choice. Nicholas took the money he had and used it all to buy the stock at $120 per share. Sadly, that remains the highest price the stock has ever traded. The stock price went downhill a few months after Nicholas bought it. First slowly, then rapidly, to a point where Nicholas was just watching from the sidelines as the price went down to zero. Finally letting go of his worst investment Nicholas somehow held onto his stock for years, even though he wasn’t making any returns on it. A few years later, he moved to the US for work. He wasn’t allowed to hold a foreign account, and so he was forced to transfer his portfolio in Germany to his US bank. However, he decided that the lousy stock was not worth the effort and so he sold it and counted his losses. Lessons learned The stock market is tricky Succeeding in the stock market is harder than winning the gold medal at the Olympics, so brace yourself and go ready to give it your all. Don’t hold onto cash Cash is not as great as people think it is, especially if there’s inflation. You lose money in the long run by keeping cash in the bank. Invest in a diversified portfolio Manage risk by investing in a diversified portfolio and hire a fund manager to manage this portfolio. This removes emotions out of the investment. Invest for the long term You can only make or preserve your wealth if you’re investing for the long term. Humans act either out of fear or out of greed When it comes to investing, neither fear or greed helps you make wealth. Fear makes you sell your stock when the stock market goes down because you’re afraid it could go further down. Then you miss the upswing. When stocks go up, you get greedy and go into the market, but what you don’t realize is that you’re paying expensively. Andrew’s takeaways Avoid FOMO when investing in the US stock market Be very careful when listening to other people talk about their investments and wanting to do it too because they sound so successful. People only talk about their wins and rarely about their losses. So do not believe everything that you hear. No action in life that is risk-free Every single action has a benefit and a cost. If you put money into the bank, and you don’t get the interest payment, it doesn’t grow. Now you have exposed yourself to shortfall risk, the risk that the money that you need at retirement will not be there. Actionable advice Sign up for a diversified portfolio and get a fund manager to manage it for you. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months Nicholas’s number one goal for the next 12 months is to build another company that impacts people and hopefully makes life better in the US. Parting words   “Run risks, but be smart. Know which risks you’re taking, be very deliberate, and choose the ones that you have under control. Then outsource the ones that you don’t to somebody who’ll have them under control.” Nicholas Hinrichsen   Connect with Nicholas Hinrichsen LinkedIn Twitter Website Andrew’s books How to Start Building Your Wealth Investing in the Stock Market My Worst Investment Ever 9 Valuation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them Transform Your Business with Dr.Deming’s 14 Points Andrew’s online programs Valuation Master Class How to Start Building Your Wealth Investing in the Stock Market Finance Made Ridiculously Simple Become a Great Presenter and Increase Your Influence Transform Your Business with Dr. Deming’s 14 Points Connect with Andrew Stotz: astotz.com LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube My Worst Investment Ever Podcast Further reading mentioned Jason Zweig (2007) Your Money and Your Brain: How the New Science of Neuroeconomics Can Help Make You Rich

In this episode, Jeremy and Brock talk to Nicholas Hinrichsen and Chris Coleman the co-founders of Carlypso, a company that simplified the process of buying and selling used cars. Niki and Chris attended Stanford Business School and launched Carlypso on the advice of Stanford professors. After launch, Carlypso was accepted into Y Combinator and eventually sold to Carvana.Nicholas and Chris discuss the experience leading each of them to Stanford Business School and the process of building & selling a company. While at Stanford Business School, the founders attended class with Andy Rachleff. Professor Rachleff studied and wrote extensively on product-market fit. During our conversation, Hinrichsen and Coleman talked about gaining experience before and after cofounding a company together. Both Chris and Niki discuss focusing on the long-lasting result of creating a company. Chris framed entrepreneurship as less making the right decision and more as limiting the wrong decisions. In fact, all of the decision-making can be framed as the practice of limiting wrong decisions. The rabbit hole of what's possible only gets deeper. Managing it is the key. First-time founders struggle with product. Second-time founders struggle with distribution. If you are curious about the reality of a company's start, ask the founder about the first 3 months, it might be the best way to found out the real story. It's a question we'll be asking of founders in the future.Recommendations:Blitzscaling by Reid Hoffman Andy Rachleff's perspective
