In today's episode, we discuss Pepsi Orange Streak at Nickelodeon Universe in Bloomington, MN. This family coaster started its life in 1992 as Pepsi Ripsaw at Knott's Camp Snoopy. While not an extreme thrill ride, it became the first rollercoaster for many young thrillseekers, and led to similar attractions such as Jaguar at Knott's Berry Farm. Much has happened over the last 30 years, but the coaster still continues to thrill families to this day and offers fantastic views of the Nickelodeon Universe amusement park. Minnesota is a big shaper of mall culture. Southdale was the first indoor mall in the country when it opened in Edina in 1956. Over the next decades, malls spread across suburbia, pulling crowds of shoppers from downtowns. Then, 30 years ago the Mall of America set the stage for malls as entertainment complexes when it opened on Aug. 11, 1992, with an amusement park surrounded by hundreds of stores. Now the COVID-19 pandemic and the rush to online shopping is changing malls yet again. Courtesy of Alexandra Lange. Alexandra Lange's book “Meet me by the Fountain: An Inside History of the Mall.” MPR News host Angela Davis talks with a Mall of America vice president and a design critic about the evolution of mall culture. Guests: Alexandra Lange is a design critic and author of the new book “Meet me by the Fountain: An Inside History of the Mall.” Her previous book was ”The Design of Childhood: How the Material World Shapes Independent Kids.” Jill Renslow is executive vice president of business development and marketing at the Mall of America. She started working at the mall as an events intern in 1997, when the Mall was marking its fifth anniversary. And, she never left. One of her big projects was overseeing the transformation of Camp Snoopy theme park into Nickelodeon Universe. Cue the sad violins as we hop into the the Best Pixar Score bracket. Will something classic take the crown, or has a new entry blown us away?: - We welcomed back to the show a very impassioned Pixar score fanatic, Marissa. - Chris and Kyle mixed up some very on-theme Spoonfuls of Sugar this week, and Marissa did her best to replicate the symphony experience from home. - Marissa gives us a trip report from Touch of Disney at the Disneyland Resort. - Chris chimes in with a short but sweet review of Nickelodeon Universe at the American Dream mall in New Jersey. - Our surveyed demographic was definitely our people. - We gave some love to a few Pixar Score that just Missed The Dance. - As it is with any Pixar bracket, we've got another ridiculously stacked Field of 16. - Chris and Kyle immediately establish a mixed pronunciation guide for "Giacchino." - The gang attempts to sing many, many Pixar score moments throughout this episode. - Chris does a Randy Newman impression (shocker). - Pixar's conversation with Thomas Newman regarding Finding Dory. - Marissa whips out her childhood piano book. From the Simplr studios in San Francisco, this is your daily briefing. IntroductionThis is Today in Five, for today, Friday, January 10th. Here are today’s headlines in digital disruption.Bloomscapes has formed a partnership with West Elm, marking its first partnership with a major retailer. According to a company press release, Bloomscape products will be available on West Elm’s U.S. website. First, here are the latest headlines.Forever 21 Relaunching International Online StoreForever 21 is relaunching its international online store in partnership with e-commerce platform, Global-e. The fashion retailer filed for bankruptcy in September, saying at the time it would close as many as 178 U.S. stores, along with most of its international stores in Europe and Asia in order to refocus on its U.S. and Latin American businesses. In a statement, Forever 21 President said the retailer has seen ongoing demand from customers in regions where it plans to exit. He went on to say, “E-commerce forms a large chunk of the profitable core of our operations and as part of our new global strategy, Forever 21 will leverage Global-e’s technology to offer international customers an outstanding online experience.“ Mega-mall Defying OddsMany people were skeptical about the long-awaited American Dream mega-mall in New Jersey opening this spring, but the mall seems to have defied the physical retail odds. Developers have leased almost 90 percent of the mall’s available 3.3 million square feet, a figure which rises to nearly 100 percent when leases under negotiation are included, according to a filing. All retail anchor stores have been spoken for, which is critical for malls since those locations are typically key in driving foot traffic. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, fewer than half of U.S. malls are expected to survive ongoing store closings, but American Dream has said it can beat the odds because of its attractions, including a Nickelodeon Universe park, an ice skating rink, and a ski slope, and its accessibility to New York City. Sweetgreen Looking Beyond SaladSalad chain Sweetgreen wants to move beyond salads. The company recently opened its new 3.0 concept store in New York City and plans to double its store count in the next three years. The company has raised $350 million dollars in private capital, bringing its valuation to $1.6 billion dollars, which makes it the only restaurant unicorn. Sweetgreen currently operations 103 locations. While its 3.0 store received some positive feedback, other customers described their experience as confusing because of unclear pricing signage, too much merchandise, and long wait times. Mistakes are inevitable at the beginning of any venture, but Sweetgreen needs to beef-up its technological and operational capabilities if it wants to be known and valued as a tech company. West Elm Forms Partnership With Plant Startup BloomscapeDirect-to-consumer plant company, Bloomscape, announced on Wednesday it formed a partnership with West Elm. The DTC brand said this marks its first partnership with a major retailer. According to a company press release, Bloomscape products will be available for purchase on West Elm’s U.S. website. The partnership follows a Series A funding round in 2019 in which the company raised $7.5 million dollars. The company has raised $9.2 million dollars to date, according to Crunchbase. Bloomscape’s partnership with West Elm also underscores a growing trend, especially in the home goods segment. As the market gets more saturated, brands are being forced to expand outside of their initial product categories. Mattress brand, Casper, expanded into the electronics and drug categories in 2019 with the launch of a smart nightlight and CBD gummies. Bedding brand, Brooklinen, launched its own online marketplace called Spaces in October, which invites brand partners to sell on the platform.West Elm has also formed a variety of partnerships with brands in the past from furniture startup, Floyd, to smart home electronics company, Nest. For West Elm, the collaborations provide a relatively low-risk way of expanding and experimenting with different products and categories without having to develop the products in-house. In a statement about their partnership with Bloomscape., West Elm’s director of partnerships said, “Together, we can better serve our customers as they journey into designing and completing their homes.”Plants could prove to be a lucrative category to expand into. Along with Bloomscape, other startups like Urban Stems and The Sill have entered the space. According to National Gardening Association date cited by Bloomscape, houseplant sales have increased some 50 percent to $1.7 billion dollars in the past three years. ClosingThanks for listening to this latest episode of Today In Five. Don’t forget to subscribe and lease us a review. We’ll see you Monday.

Today for our attraction spotlight, we’re going to incorporate a bit of a review as well. Nestled in the corner of Nickelodeon Universe at Bloomington, Minnesota’s Mall of America is an attraction that is simultaneously unique, yet very familiar. Inspired by Disney’s famous Soarin’ attractions, FlyOver America brings the flying theater concept to a very different venue. Opened in 2016, this attraction is the brainchild of Stephen Geddes and Andrew Strang, who originally opened FlyOver Canada, which is currently operating in Vancouver. After demonstrated success at that venue, the partners looked for a new location, and found it at the Midwest Megamall. The ride system of the attraction was designed by Brogent Technologies Inc. and in part by famed coaster manufacturer Vekoma. The 20 million dollar attraction is very much like it’s Soarin predecessor, however with some very distinct differences. Both feature a comical safety video, with the US version currently borrowing from its Canadian sibling. It’d definitely be interesting to see Patrick Warburton’s safety spiel overlaid on the FlyOver video. I’m sure an impressive amount of synchrony would be the result. In Soarin’, Guests all board the attraction at the same level, with the ride vehicles being lifted into position by massive mechanical arms. This gives Guests a “takeoff” sensation to begin their adventure. FlyOver, on the other hand, asks Guests to do the lifting, with queues ending on multiple levels from 10ft off the ground to 40ft, accessed by stairways and ramps. Upon entering the theater, Guests board hang-glideresque benches and face the screen. Once buckled in (with smaller aviators who don’t measure up to height indicators on the seats needing to thread their buckle through a loop on the seat) the lights go out, the guide rails fall back, and the vehicles are slowly moved out into position above the screen. From that point, the experience is very similar. Large sweeping views of diverse landscapes around the country, with the occasional blast of mist to represent ocean spray or the bite of arctic cold. Slight smells are also generated, further adding to the experience. Not adding to the experience, however, is the abrupt end of the screen at the top and bottom, as well as the shadows from the ride vehicles on either periphery. This is an issue Soarin’s omnimax dome screen and projectors do not have. The soundtrack is certainly inspirational and appropriate, albeit somewhat sedate and not nearly as catchy as its Disney counterpart. The ride length, however, is impressively long, with many more locales being featured as a result of its ample run time. Overall, FlyOver America feels like a generic version of the Disney classic. It is certainly fun, and definitely easier to access. The lack of corporate red tape allows for more flexibility in the films produced for the attraction, which allows for seasonal overlays and future enhancement. However, the queue areas feel somewhat amateur, and the staff certainly could use an infusion of charisma. Also, while certainly more practical, the omission of the lift into position takes away a needed scene one to the attraction, putting riders immediately into the action, further emphasizing that this is just a motion simulator. It feels like a great flying experience, but it's clear some expense was spared. That being said, it is worth seeing, especially if you happen to come across a BOGO or coupon. Without that, the $20 ticket price for adults and $16 ticket price for children are a bit steep for the experience and execution of this ride. Have you had a chance to experience FlyOver America or FlyOver Canada? What are your impressions of the attraction? Let us know at connect@mainentrancecast.com.

Co-hosts Chris Wright and Graeson Korte are making another episode in which Graeson puts forth no effort and Chris does all the heavy-lifting. Chris starts the ball rolling with some really good riddles that Graeson does a pretty good job at. They discuss whether a man who lives along in the woods can be virtuous or whether to be virtuous requires the presence of other people. Chris is schooled in the game of Minesweeper because he generally prefers to trouble himself with more important issues, like stand-up comedy (he did an open-mic last Friday). The so-called "Mystery Bus" (inappropriately named as there was no mystery), is discussed as it had recently gone to Nickelodeon Universe in the Mall of America. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pointcounterpoint/support
