In This Episode: Nicole Bell, CEO of Galaxy Diagnostics, shares her journey from personal experience with Lyme disease in her family to leading innovation in diagnostics. The connection between tick-borne pathogens and chronic diseases like early-onset Alzheimer's. Why traditional Lyme disease tests often fail and the need for direct detection methods. The latest advancements in testing for Borrelia, Bartonella, Babesia, and other stealth pathogens. The impact of Nicole's "State of Lyme Disease Research" report on the Lyme community. What patients and healthcare providers need to know about cutting-edge diagnostic tools. Why This Matters: An increasing number of studies link flea- and tick-borne pathogens to chronic illnesses affecting the joints, heart, and central nervous system. These infections mimic conditions like lupus and fibromyalgia, making them hard to diagnose without advanced testing. Galaxy Diagnostics offers specialized tests to detect Lyme Borrelia, Bartonella, Babesia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Rickettsia species—providing a much-needed solution for patients seeking accurate diagnoses. It's my favourite time of year again – the annual Ig Noble Awards for improbable science have just been awarded.  Here are my favourite three winners:  This year's engineering prize went to a team from Texas Rice University who pumped the corpses of dead wolf spiders with air to uncurl their legs then use them as a gripper to lift objects. They found that they were able to lift 130 percent of their own bodyweight and even switch off an LED light with the corpse grabber.  The nightmarish video of the spider grippers can be viewed here. The prize for medicine went to a group from the University of California who counted nose hairs in cadavers. After counting each individual nasal hair in the corpses of 20 men and women they found that there was no difference in the number of hairs between genders. However, they did find that the corpses belonging to people that had suffered from cancer contained significantly less nasal hair than the average person.  The public health prize went to a group at Stanford University who designed a smart toilet that can identify its user though their ‘analprint' (yes apparently the creases around our bottom are unique to each of us).  Once the cameras identify the person using the toilet, it then analyses stools and urine through pictures and test-strips to look for signs of cancer, irritable bowel syndrome and diabetes.  The full prize list is as follows:  CHEMISTRY and GEOLOGY PRIZE  Jan Zalasiewicz, for explaining why many scientists like to lick rocks.  LITERATURE PRIZE  Chris Moulin, Nicole Bell, Merita Turunen, Arina Baharin, and Akira O'Connor for studying the sensations people feel when they repeat a single word many, many, many, many, many, many, many times.  MECHANICAL ENGINEERING PRIZE  Te Faye Yap, Zhen Liu, Anoop Rajappan, Trevor Shimokusu, and Daniel Preston, for re-animating dead spiders to use as mechanical gripping tools.  PUBLIC HEALTH PRIZE  Seung-min Park, for inventing the Stanford Toilet - a device that quickly monitors and analyses the substances that humans excrete.  COMMUNICATION PRIZE  María José Torres-Prioris, Diana López-Barroso, Estela Càmara, Sol Fittipaldi, Lucas Sedeño, Agustín Ibáñez, Marcelo Berthier, and Adolfo García, for studying the mental activities of people who are experts at speaking backward.  MEDICINE PRIZE  Christine Pham, Bobak Hedayati, Kiana Hashemi, Ella Csuka, Tiana Mamaghani, Margit Juhasz, Jamie Wikenheiser, and Natasha Mesinkovska, for using cadavers to explore whether there is an equal number of hairs in each of a person's two nostrils.  NUTRITION PRIZE  Homei Miyashita and Hiromi Nakamura, for experiments to determine how electrified chopsticks and drinking straws can change the taste of food.  EDUCATION PRIZE  Katy Tam, Cyanea Poon, Victoria Hui, Wijnand van Tilburg, Christy Wong, Vivian Kwong, Gigi Yuen, and Christian Chan, for methodically studying the boredom of teachers and students.  PSYCHOLOGY PRIZE  Stanley Milgram, Leonard Bickman, and Lawrence Berkowitz for experiments on a city street to see how many passers-by stop to look upward when they see strangers looking upward  PHYSICS PRIZE  Bieito Fernández Castro, Marian Peña, Enrique Nogueira, Miguel Gilcoto, Esperanza Broullón, Antonio Comesaña, Damien Bouffard, Alberto C. Naveira Garabato, and Beatriz Mouriño-Carballido, for measuring the extent to which ocean-water mixing is affected by the sexual activity of anchovies.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Nicole Bell's husband, Russ, became moody, argumentative, and depressed, she shook it off as the difficulties of being married with two small kids. But a short time later, Russ started forgetting basic things, like the code to their house alarm. When a doctor's visit and all lab results came back clean, Russ was sent to a neurologist. It was then that he was diagnosed with late-stage Alzheimer's disease. But in Nicole's engineering brain, his diagnosis never made sense, so she set out to get to the root cause of Russ's illness. Podcast guest, Nicole Bell, is an author, entrepreneur, and advocate for tick-borne and neurodegenerative diseases. She advanced her professional career as an engineer and program manager and spent the past 15 years in medical devices and medical technology. But when her husband became chronically ill, she left that position to take on her most challenging roles yet: caregiver and medical proxy.  In this episode, Nicole takes us through her harrowing journey of getting Russ the proper medical diagnosis, after doctor after doctor told her it was Alzheimer's. She explains her difficult decision to step away from her job as an executive and become a full-time caregiver, while having two young children (aged 5 and 8 at the time).  Nicole shares the progression of Russ's disease, how she coped, and how she found the courage to write a book about the experience. Throughout her long journey, Nicole has become passionate about finding the root cause of illness and encourages us to do the same.

That day while her husband was at work and her kids were at school, Nicole updated her Facebook page in her Malakwa home. After that, she vanished. Her husband returned home to find the house empty. Her car which Nicole couldn't drive because it had been broke down was still in the driveway. Not long after she vanished, Nicole's cell phone was found in the area of Salmon Arm, about 50 kilometers or about 31 miles from her home. Nicole has not been seen since, and her family is worried about her as it was not like her to leave home. Also concerning, is that during a two year period in that area, several women either went missing or turned up dead. Nicole's mom, Jane Aubertin, is the guest in this episode and discusses her daughter's baffling disappearance, and her frustration at the lack of transparency on the part of police investigating the case.Nicole is described as Caucasian, 4'11” tall, and has blonde hair past her shoulders. Mr. Dunin's Lyme disease journey inspired him to build built a platform designed to match patients with vetted professional health and life coaches. Mr. Dunin was diagnosed with Lyme disease at the age of 20. Prior to the diagnosis, he was an elite Canadian Jr hockey player in high school and college. His path to professional hockey was interrupted by multiple short-term illnesses and then a traumatic brain injury. When Mr. Dunin's brain injury failed to respond to treatment, his doctors began to suspect that his immune system was compromised. He was initially tested for Lyme with a traditional western blot and then eventually tested positive on the German ArminLabs test. Like many Lyme patients, Mr. Dunin was forced to abandon the western medical system to rebuild his health. Utilizing Rife therapy, “completely changing [his] diet,” and changing his mindset and lifestyle, he overcame debilitating Lyme symptoms. If you would like to learn more about how former elite athlete found health and happiness by completely changing his mindset and lifestyle, then tune in now!

Russ Bell is a married father of two minor children. His MIT educated wife Nicole describes him as the most intelligent man she had ever met. Mr. Bell grew up in the American South where he enjoyed outdoor sporting activities such as hiking and shooting. He understood that ticks and tick bites were part and parcel of a sportsman's outdoor experience. Toward the end of his professional career, Russ Bell fell in love with and married a brilliant young colleague. The couple's 20-year age gap presented an opportunity to engineer an idyllic life: Russ would begin a new chapter in life as a caretaker for their young children and Nicole would continue to build her blossoming career. The seemingly perfect family planning came to a sudden halt when the Lyme spirochetes and co-infections lurking in Russ' brain caused him to suffer cognitive decline from Alzheimer's disease, rendering him unable to care for his children and eventually himself. During the family's painful journey, Nicole Bell heard a call to describe her family's experience with the raw reality of Lyme and converted her journal into a critically acclaimed memoir: What Lurks in the Woods. If you would like to learn more about the Bell family's “mistakes and successes” and the book that author Kris Newby described as a “must read for caregivers,” then tune in now!

Most of us struggle with body image on some level. Depending on a lot of factors yoga can be instrumental in helping us learn to love and accept our bodies--or trigger us. Today’s guest, Nicole Bell, has experienced both sides first hand. Nicole's spiral into Anorexia coincided with her intense love of Bikram yoga. As she tells it, the classes were more like punishment than a refuge for her. Years later she found herself in a yoga studio again, only this time she has a very different mind set. “Even after all the restricting and after bullying myself and my body for so many years, I’m finally starting to listen,” she says. “I don’t need to do the full bind all the time or all of the Chaturangas. I’m not trying to prove myself to anybody. I’m trying to make myself feel good. That’s it.”Her story is a powerful reminder that we are all struggling in one way or another. As she points out in this episode, finding a practice that raises your awareness of how you speak to yourself and encourages you to be kinder is one way to come through it stronger, wiser, and more capable.Show notes: http://www.jasonyogacom/podcast/episode179SHOUT OUT TO OUR SPONSORSAcuity is a scheduling assistant that works 24/7 behind the scenes to fill your calendar and takes hours of work off your plate — so you can keep your zen, and focus on all the other important aspects of your yoga business or side hustle.
