How can inclusive design spur community connections and build stronger partnerships in the process?During the COVID pandemic, the Van Alen Institute and the Urban Design Forum collaborated to launch Neighborhoods Now, a program shepherding resources, both funding and people, toward pandemic recovery and strengthening community partnerships across four boroughs in New York City. One notable community partnership was with Think!Chinatown, an intergenerational non-profit based in Manhattan's Chinatown that fosters community through neighborhood engagement, storytelling and the arts. Manhattan's Chinatown was severely impacted by the pandemic, not only due to the health crisis but also a rise in anti-Asian hate. Through partnering with Neighborhoods Now, Think!Chinatown sought to unite the community, spark joy and connection amongst community members, and create a warm, welcoming space where residents could once again feel safe. From this partnership, the Chinatown Night Market was born.Launched the following summer, the Night Markets not only created a welcoming, safe, and joyful space for community members, but they also brought partners from across the City together to rebuild trust and re-focus on community needs through the implementation of inclusive design. In this new podcast, we learn how this partnership grew, how trust was rebuilt, and how this project kept Manhattan's Chinatown community at its core. We talk with Andrew Brown (Van Alen Institute) and Yin Kong (Think!Chinatown), as they share the key elements that made this community partnership successful, and discuss how programs like Neighborhoods Now can create lasting positive change for communities.Resources and FootnotesVan Alen InstituteThink!ChinatownNeighborhoods NowMore on Collective ImpactInfographic: What is Collective Impact?Resource List: Getting Started in Collective ImpactThe Intro music, entitled “Running,” was composed by Rafael Krux, and can be found here and is licensed under CC: By 4.0.The outro music, entitled “Deliberate Thought,” was composed by Kevin Macleod. John MacKenzie chats with Mark Stanley, Manager of Cairns Night Markets, about the recent crime and chaos suffered by visitors and locals in the eatery of the night markets on the Cairns Esplanade, where young thugs took over allegedly hurling chairs and abuse at passersby.
In this episode of "Sleepless in Singapore," I recount a trip across Southeast Asia with Hatim, starting with a lucky break on a ferry from Koh Tao to Chumphon. We accidentally found ourselves in a plush seating area without paying extra, a nice little win that kicked off our adventure. The trip was a mix of comfort, confusion over local names, and the joy of unexpected freebies. From there, we embarked on a train journey filled with friendly chats, even with language barriers, and the quirky charm of traveling through Thailand by rail. The adventure continued with us navigating through Thailand, sampling local food (even when it meant accidentally ordering chicken feet), and dealing with police checkpoints in a way that turned potential hassles into fun stories. The trip wasn't just about moving from place to place; it was about the people we met, the sights we saw from the back of a scooter in Chiang Mai, and the peaceful days spent on a boat down the Mekong River. Despite the occasional discomfort and the laughable moments of misunderstanding, it was the kind of journey that brings stories to life, connecting us more deeply to each other and the world around us.
Earlier this month, at an event at the Queens Museum, we unveiled the findings of a first-of-its-kind study titled “NYC's New Small Business Incubators”. The study was commissioned by our partners, Citizens Bank, and was conducted by Epicenter-NYC. We also brought together a group of small business owners who shared stories of how the Queens Night Market played a pivotal role in their success. In this episode we'll share highlights from this discussion. The voices you'll hear include Hana Saber Tehra of Persian Eats NYC, Wanda Chiu of Hong Kong Street Food, Rosangela Arnold of Brazilicious, Joey Batista of Joey Bats Cafe, and finally Lenin Costas of Don Ceviche. The conversation was moderated by on-air correspondent, Dahiana Perez. Tonight on our programming at The Bow, we present our exclusive WORK IT Series called NIGHT MARKETS IN NIGERIA(Afia Mgbede) .National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in late August 2023 said in its Nigeria Labour Force Survey (NLFS) report that in Q1 2023 ,unemployment in Nigeria increased by 4.1%. Night Markets seem to really help reduce unemployment as we see young Nigerians and elderly Nigerians selling their goods and services outside the markets and mostly in the night. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/THE-BOW/support

Hello and welcome to the 21st episode of my trip! In today's episode, I will be covering my week in Taiwan as I visited Taipei and Kaohsiung. There is plenty of information on night markets, areas we visited, how good the coffee scene is and of course some budget ideas. One week was nowhere near enough for this amazing little island and it has been added to my 'return' list. There is just so much more to explore. Enjoy! The simplicity of Dungeons and Dragons allows the DM to reskin character classes and races to fit almost any setting, but there are instances where it is better to just play a different TTRPG altogether. In this episode, we are joined by Kevin and Mike to discuss our favourite mechanics from Cyberpunk RED including Night Markets, Cyberpsychosis, fashion, critical injuries, humanity and therapy, and organized crime. Cyberpunk has a completely different set of rules from D&D, but there are certainly things we have learned from our time playing Cyberpunk that will make us better DMs, and we hope that you can sift through our conversation and learn something as well! In addition, I almost delete about 10 hours of Nuzlocke gameplay while recording, so listen in as I realize the consequences of a misclick. As well, thank you to this week's sponsor, Newsly. The concept of the night market traces its roots back to the Chinese Tang dynasty. Taiwanese night markets are street markets in Taiwan that operate in urban or suburban areas between sunset and sunrise. Most night markets operate daily and feature a mixture of individual stalls selling clothing, consumer goods, xiaochi (similar to snacks or fast food), and specialty drinks. The atmosphere is usually crowded and noisy with hawkers shouting and fast-paced music playing over loudspeakers. Taiwanese night markets have evolved over the years from small local gatherings to noisy streets lined with vendors. These vendors must adhere to regulations placed on their activities by the Taiwanese government. In this podcast, we discuss what Night Markets are, interesting activities that take place there, and the different foods that have made them so famous and popular. So please bring your appetite, your wallet, a willingness to try anything/everything and join our adventure into the Night Market. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/eggbanana/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/eggbanana/support

KYW Newsradio's Hadas Kuznits chats with Night Market coordinator Ian Moran about what's in store and where their Night Markets will be this season, May through October.
We have spent plenty of time during our journey in Southeast Asia. We love everything these countries have to offer travelers. The people, food, scooter lifestyle, gorgeous beaches, and affordability are all part of the reasons why we have stayed 7 months in this region that includes Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. We have still yet to see the beauty of Laos and the Philippines, but that will happen someday soon. In this episode of Passport Joy Travel Talk, we hope to give you a reason to visit these countries and discover why we have enjoyed it so much. Main Topics Covered: Why We Love Southeast Asia People, Food, Scooter, Cost Tech-friendly, Beaches, Belief System Links Mentioned in the Episode: Check out all of the PARTNERS that have made our lives easy while traveling the world. Part of our love for Southeast Asia was because of our amazing time in Da Nang, Vietnam (Trip of a Lifetime). If you are looking for a great island trip head to Phu Quoc (Fantasy Island of Vietnam). World-class treatment can be found in the barber shop in Bali, Indonesia – World Barber Shop Adventures. The historic ruins and the vibrant cities are waiting to be discovered in Cambodia Travel (Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Angkor Wat). There are endless great restaurants and cafes in Beautiful Bali, Indonesia (4 Weeks in Travel Paradise). Several of our favorite Southeast Asian locations made our Best Travel Spots for 2019 (Places You May NOT Know). Two places that are close together but worlds apart are Singapore and Kuala Lumpur Travel (2 Kinds of Awesome). If you are looking for a great time with your older friends, take a Thailand Adult Trip (Bars, Night Markets, & an Island). Traveling with friends is a lot of fun like when we did Vietnam with a Friend (Da Nang, Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Quy Nhon). We often get asked after telling someone about our journey ‘what is something bad that has happened?’ or ‘what do you miss the most’ or ‘have you been in danger or harms way?’ People LOVE negativity and hearing about bad stuff. It’s the reason that everyone slows down for a car accident or clicks on the horrible headlines that fill the news websites…..Yes, our lives are amazing and we don’t have anything to complain about BUT everyone wants to hear about the bad stuff that happens to others. It may be the reason you decided to listen to this podcast today...so...these are the things we HATE about traveling. We are not going to mention missing our family or friends. That’s a given and so cliche. We are going to discuss the stuff that annoys us during this adventure. With our sixth trip back to Thailand, we had a chance to explore with our friends that were visiting from the US. It was a fun-filled ten days showing them all that we love about Bangkok, exploring the island of Koh Samet together, and taking in the craziness of Pattaya. In this episode, we discuss Muay Thai fighting, street food, the adult life options, and why Pattaya is built for the male western traveler. Beaches, beer, and scooters. Buckle up. Main Topics Covered: Bangkok Koh Samet Pattaya Why Thailand Rocks Links Mentioned in the Episode: Google Fi - the best phone plan for international travelers Nixplay - unbelievable digital frame to share all of your travel photos Our friends, Chris and Arlene, joined us for ten fun-filled days in Thailand. If you want more details on Bangkok (this was our 6th trip) check out Podcast 8: In LOVE with Bangkok (and a Visit to the Hospital). Sukhumvit is our favorite place to stay when in Bangkok. The Patpong Night Market is wild as hell and a ton of fun. Wat Pho (Temple of Reclining Buddha) is a must-visit location in Bangkok. Scooters are part of the culture and a great way to see the city and get around. Koh Samet has beautiful views, an authentic vibe, and plenty of beaches to chill on. Ao Phrao Beach is the best beach on the island of Koh Samed and is clean, warm, and clear. We have also visited Ko Phi Phi Islands, Thailand (Incredible Beaches) which are more active than the quiet Koh Samet vibe. Pattaya is an adult playground with plenty of nightlife options. Muay Thai Fighting is a must-see event if you love sports. The competition is fierce and the rituals are fantastic. We attended Max Muay Thai for 2,000 baht each. Yes, the price is steep but it was well worth it. Pattaya is different in Patong with the range of bars and size. We discuss The Insane Nightlife of Patong, Thailand (What to do in Patong 2018). Both are crazy in their own way. Sign up for our Newsletter to get the latest tips in Travel and hear about our weekly visits around the world

Learn all about Taiwanese food in this episode as Jason Lee discusses what makes it unique from mainland China’s cuisine and why night markets are about more than just the food.
0330 Out & About : Night Markets in Seoul
Keelung’s Miaokou Night Market has a reputation of being one of the most popular night market’s in Taiwan. The Main street where the Dianji temple first started drawing patrons to the area is lined with food stalls serving some of the most popular dishes and snacks found in Keelung. This is a very tourist friendly night market with translations in Japanese and English, some are loose in their descriptions. Honestly lots of great tasting food but I wouldn’t consider alot of it nutritious. One of my favorite stalls serves oil rice, a sticky style rice with mushrooms and a delicious soup served with lumps of fresh crab meat. Being a port city there is an abundant selection of seafood and other interesting tasty treats.Further south, in central Taiwan lies the city of Taichung. The climate is drier in this part of the island making for a perfect environment for night markets. Taichung is world-famous as the place where bubble tea was invented. If you ask most Taiwanese people where their favorite place to go for a weekend is many will say Tainan. This city located in Southern Taiwan was once the capital of the island before the Japanese began their 50 year rule of the country and moved operations to Taipei. There are lovely Japanese colonial era buildings everywhere but most people come to Tainan for the food. This is the Anping area of Tainan with the oldest streets on the island. People travel from all over Taiwan just to visit and try the many special snacks only made here, like one of my favorites, Coffin Toast. Excerpts from "Taiwan-Discovering The Beautiful Isle's Food Paradise".
Danielle Chang created LUCKYRICE to follow her passion for creating a platform for Asian culture. Her career has always revolved around pop culture, storytelling, and entrepreneurship. She began her career at The New York Times and later founded and published the lifestyle magazine, Simplycity. After earning her master’s degree in Critical Theory from Columbia University, she was a Professor of Contemporary Art History as well as a curator of emerging art. Most recently, she was CEO of Vivienne Tam, a fashion company, and, prior to that, the managing director of Assouline, a French creative advertising agency. Her focus today is the culinary arts. Danielle’s first cookbook, Lucky Rice: Stories and Recipes from Night Markets, Feasts, and Family Tables, was just released and brings alive the flavors of Asian cuisine. Danielle is currently the host and producer of Lucky Chow. Suzanne Cupps is Chef de Cuisine at Untitled and Studio Cafe, both in the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. As a child, Suzanne often dodged her mother’s requests for help in the kitchen, and it wasn’t until the end of her undergraduate years at Clemson University that she began to consider cooking as a potential career. Suzanne’s first job in the hospitality industry was an HR administrator position at the Waldorf Astoria, where she realized that her interests lay firmly in the kitchen. Soon after, Suzanne enrolled in the Institute of Culinary Education and found the atmosphere of a professional kitchen to her liking. After graduating from ICE in 2005, Suzanne began her culinary career with Union Square Hospitality Group as an extern at Gramercy Tavern. She then went on to hone her skills at Anita Lo’s restaurant Annisa. In 2011, Suzanne returned to Gramercy Tavern as a line cook. Most recently, she held the position of Tavern Sous Chef.
