Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job
Check out the podcast on Macslist here:(https://www.macslist.org/?post_type=podcasts&p=15926&preview=true) Does networking feel icky to you? If so, you're doing it wrong, according to Find Your Dream Job guest Angie Callen. Networking is simply building and nurturing relationships with others, and we all do that with friends and family every day. Angie suggests being proactive but not aggressive and focusing on long-term relationships. She says it's a mistake to only seek someone out for what they can offer you. That is inauthentic. Build authenticity by being true to who you are and finding others who are like-minded or whom you want to know more about. About Our Guest: Angie Callen is an award-winning career and business coach and the founder of Career Benders. Her company helps professionals, executives, and entrepreneurs navigate today's workforce. Angie also hosts the No More Mondays podcast. Everyone's heard the saying: "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade," implying that you should make the best of a negative experience, that something bad is happening to you. But what if instead of interpreting it as something external happening to you, it's seen as happening for you? It's something we believe here at No More Mondays, and we're excited to have a guest who feels the same! Kevin Dawson is a TEDx and keynote speaker and host of the Leaders and Lagers podcast who has used roadblocks life placed in his way as a detour onto a path of purpose and clarity. Let's all join him, shall we?
We're back with Season 3 and you know we gotta kick if off with this funny little guy! This week, Dee updates Al on the origins of America's most harrowing shopping date, and what it took to get Elmo up on the shelves. Plus, we declare No More Mondays with a local ad from Japan. Today I'm joined by Spencer Fry, founder of Podia, a platform helping creators make a living online through selling courses, digital downloads, webinars and more. 7 years in, they have a 35 person team and have an awesome product for creators. But this isn't Spencer's first rodeo, bootstrapping and exiting 3 businesses between 2003 and 2014, notably Carbonmade and TypeFrag. What's interesting about Spencer is that he's actually raised funding for Podia, and I wanted to find out why a seasoned bootstrapper like Spencer went down this route, and if it's a an option that more indie hackers should consider.

Wow! We just hit the 50th episode milestone, and it’s been an awesome run! I’ve had a great time talking to millionaires and future millionaires about their stories and how they’ve changed their mindset and built wealth. Today’s show is a bit different. I’m taking time to celebrate TMC’s 50th Episode with some of our past guests, a couple of which have had an impact on my life. Special thanks to Dan Miller of 48 Days for the impact he’s had in my life and professional development. Also, special thanks to JV Crum III who’s helped me transition from the JOB mindset into an Entrepreneur mindset and helped me launch The Millionaire Choice Show! Guest: Mark Padolsky, The Land Geek https://thelandgeek.com Armed with only $3,000, gut-wrenching fear, and absolutely no real estate experience… Mark bought his first few parcels of raw land in 2001. Today Mark is the author of Dirt Rich, the ultimate guide to helping you build a passive income. and owner of Frontier Properties, a very reputable and successful land investing company, and has been buying and selling land full time since 2001. By focusing on working smart, not hard, he has completed over 5,500 land deals with an average ROI of over 300% on cash flips, and over 1,000% on the deals he sells with financing terms. Prior to his land investing success, Mark had a high-stress, soulless corporate job, and felt trapped in a state of solo-economic-dependency (i.e. his income stopped as soon as he stopped working). Escaping solo-economic dependency changed Mark’s life in so many positive ways that he decided to teach, coach and mentor others to help them achieve their financial goals. Even though Mark invests a lot of his time helping others, he stays actively involved in running his land investing business, and is dedicated to teaching the most current and relevant “real world” land investing methods to his students. I am really excited for this episode, as we have Dan Miller here to talk about the importance of knowing who you are, what you are capable of, what your strengths/weaknesses are, and what your dreams are BEFORE you buy a franchise or other small business. Dan Miller is President of 48 Days, LLC, and specializes in creative thinking for increased personal and business success. He believes that meaningful work blends our natural skills and abilities, our unique personality traits and our dreams and passions. More specifically, Dan is active in helping individuals redirect careers, evaluate new income sources, and achieve balanced living. Dan is the author of the widely acclaimed 48 Days to the Work You Love and No More Mondays. I could probably go on and on with just Dan's accolades, but I will stop at this point and simply welcome him to the show. Action Tips: Don’t let where you start dictate where you go. Make your own future in your own vision. Reading books can help change the trajectory of your life. It’s never to late to go after your dreams. Dan was 58 years old when he wrote the New York Times best seller, 48 Days to the Work You Love. One way to differentiate yourself and your business is to go against the grain. Recipe to finding work that is meaningful: 85% looking inward; 15% application. Don’t let work or your struggles define you. These are merely pieces of a bigger pie. Passion is developed more than it is discovered. Becoming excellent at something can develop Passion. Always ask yourself what you are prepared to do at this stage in your life. Don’t just focus on the learning; focus on the application as well. If you are too entrepreneurial, franchising may NOT be right for you. You never get over the fear of failure. I speak to a lot of people who are working to improve their existing business or start up a new one. This is one of my favorite topics and it is one of the many reasons I decided to become a sales coach. As I listen to someone get excited about a new idea, I immediately begin a check list of items that I believe are essential for success. Recently, while listening to Dan Miller's 48 Days Podcast, I was reminded of the Five Predictors of Success that Dan outlines in his best-selling book, No More Mondays. I went back and re-read Dan's account of these predictors and the characteristics required for success. They may look different than what you were taught and I wanted to pass them on to you with a short synopsis of each one. Passion, defined as intense emotional excitement, goes beyond mere enthusiasm. A person with passion can set goals but don't be surprised if others do not share or support your vision. Determination. Without determination, a person can easily be lured away from his or her path. Remember to always establish priorities instead of responding to circumstances. Talent allows a person to focus. Discover your own talent. What are those things you love to do whether or not you get paid? Self-discipline. Without self-discipline, a person can easily be swayed by others. Self-discipline is the foundation that makes the other predictors work. Faith. Faith is that intangible ingredient that moves a person past the initial planning and persistence. Success is ultimately more art than science, more intuition than logic. What criteria do you use to make work and business decisions in your life? If it is based solely on the income potential or the latest trend, you may end up disappointed and unfulfilled. Our hearts have to join our heads to find true life direction. Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved. ~William Jennings Bryan Have a great week! Pierce *A portion of this blog and The Five Predictors of Success was an excerpt from Dan Miller's book, No More Mondays. Please go to www.48days.com to learn more about how you can have work that you love and No More Mondays.
1. I have read 48 days, and No More Mondays, and I think I am scared of failure. 2. I have an unusual habit of doodling on Styrofoam cups. It started as a stress relief at work, but several people have asked me to make them a cup and have suggested I sell them.3. I've come to the realization that my best future lies in working for myself. The problem I have is that being a solopreneur requires constant selling; I'm not a naturally outgoing, gregarious person.4. Do you think it's a good idea to leave my full time job in such a lousy economy? 5. I have a job where they constantly try to promote me. It seems like I can get every job I don't want but can't get jobs I really want. How do I break the chains and go in a different direction?6. I'm 26 and I have been in sales since I was 16. My biggest passion is leadership or the lack there of, I see a big need in leadership development. I want to be a life coach but no college what now?
1. Dan, I recently reviewed your 999 business ideas. I like the idea of providing a mobile tool sharpening service. I have the necessary knowledge and most of the tools. My biggest question is how to advertise. I've thought of Craigslist, newspaper etc. but I have no marketing knowledge.2. I am 51, been with same company for 30 years, I have never liked my job. My pension from work will never amount to enough to really retire. Question, When should I retire? Should I put in 11 more years to reach maximum benefit or get out soon with less retirement money but more time to build another income?3. I just finished reading an article on the decline of the middle class. I would be interested in hearing your comments on this article and whether or not your "No More Mondays" business/employment model is a solution to the decline of the middle class.4. Dan, with all your good ideas I'm wondering – do you ever have any bad ideas? 5. I have an idea that I want to develop into a product for sale. My question is: When talking to prospective manufacturers, how do I protect my idea from being stolen?6. Dan, I have passions, but they're random. Answering the "If you could do anything" question gets answers ranging from finding classic cars for buyers, to singing, to becoming a mechanic, to acting, etc. Help!
