Did you read the title of this episode? It's a doozy! As convoluted as “The Untold Story of the Story That I Told” is, I couldn't resist calling this newest episode that because of the WILD ride I went on making it. Years ago I made an eBook called “Rise and Resist” where I highlighted five different Black people who were alive around the time of Juneteenth. I told their stories and really wanted people to use this eBook to be able to share stories of Black resistance with children and students. I was planning on using one of those stories in today's episode as a way to illustrate how talking to kids about slavery can be complicated, but when I opened the book, I was astounded. I could not believe some of the stuff I wrote! There were things in there that I would never say today — things I would cringe about if someone else said them, but I double cringed knowing that I wrote them! So this episode is a little bit of what I had planned, but also a little bit of me correcting what I got totally wrong. I hope this episode reminds you how anti-racism is a journey. It's about growth. And the best thing we can do is keep moving forward and keep trying to grow. Sometimes we'll be in a position where our growth is evident, even if it's a little embarrassing, but it's worth it. Early last month, NPR published an article with the title, “A top researcher says it's time to rethink our entire approach to preschool”.  Maybe you saw it, or like me, maybe you had several people send it to you because they knew you'd find it fascinating. The article featured developmental psychologist and researcher Dr. Dale Farran and her reflections on the most recent round of startling outcomes from the Tennessee Voluntary PreK cohort, which she and her colleagues at Vanderbilt University have been studying for more than a decade. The article struck a nerve, particularly its last line which said, “We might actually get better results, … from simply letting little children play.” In this episode, I'll be diving into some of the context around this article and the study it references.  We'll talk about what we can learn from these results and why these lessons apply far beyond the scope of the popular article. We can all pretty much agree that digital technologies such as tablets, smart phones, video games and social media, have changed the childhood of our youngest generation. Doping in running has been a huge topic. So, for this episode, I went straight to “the guy” who investigated and is sharing about it.  The guy is Hajo Seppelt, the one who broke the story of doping in Russia.  This busy man was very generous to give me 15 minutes of his time. As an investigative journalist, he shares his views on the current doping situation compared to years ago. He explains at length his reasons why doping will continue to happen. Hajo expresses his thoughts on the IOC and how the president of the IOC is handling the doping situation in Russia. He explains the risks whisteblowers take to unveil the truth of doping. We discuss the talk of scrapping world records because of doping.  Hajo frankly shares his perspective on world records and timing at races. Today's Guest Hajo Seppelt Hajo Seppelt is a German journalist who has broken multiple doping stories in running and other sports around the world.  He was the one who convinced Yuliya Stepanova and Vitaly Stepanov to speak out about what they saw happening in Russia.  He has been involved with several documentaries on doping, as well. What You Will Learn About What Hajo thinks of the current doping situation compared to several decades ago. Why clean sports are not probable. How doping could benefit the sport of running. What protection whisteblowers are given. You can never expect clean sports.  That’s, to be honest, that’s a productive fantasy.
