On this episode of That Tech Pod, Laura and Kevin chat with Alex Heublein, President of Culture and Innovation at Netsurit, about what it actually takes for small and midsize businesses to modernize their tech without getting overwhelmed. Alex has spent time at major companies like IBM and Oracle, but he makes it clear why working with SMBs is often more rewarding: they're nimble, adaptable, and ready to try new things, as long as those things make sense. They dig into Netsurit's approach to “Innovate as a Service,” a subscription-style model built around co-innovation, outcomes, and a mindset shift from traditional consulting. Alex also shares his framework for helping clients navigate the noise around AI, how to pick the right use cases, and why some businesses are better off waiting before diving in.The conversation touches on everything from AI ethics and return on investment to why culture and tech have to evolve together. Plus, there's a lighthearted trivia round on the inventors behind the internet, some talk about the future of augmented reality glasses, and a few laughs along the way. If you've ever wondered how to actually apply AI without just chasing trends, or what makes an IT partner worth working with, this one's worth a listen.Alex Heublein is the President of Culture and Innovation at Netsurit, where he focuses on helping small and midsize businesses navigate digital transformation, cybersecurity, and operational growth through practical, forward-thinking technology solutions. With a strong background in both business strategy and technical leadership, Alex has held senior executive roles at major tech companies including IBM, HP, Oracle, and Red Hat. His experience spans innovation strategy, IT modernization, cloud services, and organizational culture development. At Netsurit, he leads efforts to blend culture with technology, ensuring that companies not only adopt new tools but also build the internal mindset and processes to make them work.
There has been a lot of buzz over the last 12 months surrounding the use of GenAI. We are all familiar with the likes of ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others, but what is the real value of AI when used correctly? I sat down with Alex Heublein of NETSURIT to talk about how they take an approach with their clients that involves democratizing AI and automation.
Dr. Alex Hubline, President of Culture and Innovation at Netsurit, discusses the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in managed service providers (MSPs). He emphasizes the importance of a strong company culture that prioritizes both employee and customer dreams, which is exemplified through their unique "dreams program." This program aims to align the aspirations of the workforce with the goals of the customers, fostering a collaborative environment that drives innovation. Hubline believes that many companies fail to live up to their cultural values, but at Netseret, they actively work to integrate these values into their operations. The conversation shifts to the concept of "innovation as a service," which Netseret offers through their subscription-based service called Innovate X. This service leverages advanced automation and AI technologies to help small and medium businesses innovate and improve productivity. Hubline explains that the cost of bespoke development has historically been prohibitive for these businesses, but advancements in AI are making it more accessible. By focusing on return on investment (ROI), Netseret ensures that their innovations deliver tangible financial benefits to their clients.Hubline shares specific use cases of AI applications, such as a virtual sales assistant for a product distributor facing challenges in hiring and training sales personnel. This AI solution not only assists salespeople but also interacts directly with customers, providing complex product information and suggestive selling. Another example involves automating the classification of incoming records, significantly reducing the need for human intervention in a previously labor-intensive process. These examples illustrate how AI can eliminate repetitive tasks and enhance capabilities for businesses. Finally, Hubline addresses the balance between innovation and organizational stability. He believes that fostering a culture of innovation can lead to more effective results without disrupting service delivery. By prioritizing use cases that align with business impact and maintaining a hyper-iterative development cycle, Netseret can quickly adapt to customer needs. This approach not only enhances productivity but also bridges the gap between technology and business, allowing for a more seamless integration of innovative solutions. Three key areas essential for any business that wants to reach its full potential include: · Breaking the bottleneck through delegation. · Being purpose-driven & people-centric. · Mergers and acquisitions. Delegation helps a business owner to free time and focus on other essential business tasks. However, it is vital to find and hire the right team. You want to surround yourself with smart, trustworthy people with the skills and experience necessary to do the job well. When you have a clear purpose and put your people first, you create a culture where people are motivated to do their best work. To be purpose-driven, you must clearly understand why you are in business and what impact you want on the world. Lastly, mergers and acquisitions can be a powerful way to grow rapidly. By acquiring a competitor, you can have a larger market share and reach new customers. Join this conversation with Orrin Klopper as he shares more about that through his business which has seen massive growth over the last few years (3 acquisitions in the last year and 2 in preparation). Orrin is the CEO & accelerator of dreams for the doers, who helps turn dreams into reality for team members, customers, shareholders, fellow entrepreneurs & families. He co-founded Netsurit with a vision to build an IT Managed Service Provider (MSP) that truly helped its customers achieve their dreams. Tune in! Meet Orrin Klopper, the CEO of Netsurit, a thriving Managed Service Provider (MSP) firm with a remarkable journey of growth. Under his leadership, Netsurit has evolved into a $40 million enterprise, boasting a team of over 100 professionals. What sets Orrin apart is not just his impressive business acumen but also his commitment to fostering a unique company culture. He's the driving force behind the globally awarded Dreams program, an integral part of Netsurit's aspirational ethos. As a Microsoft Partner, Orrin has successfully orchestrated three acquisitions, further solidifying Netsurit's position in the industry. What truly sets him apart, however, is his resilience and determination, shaped by his childhood experiences of attending nine different schools, with a few detours along the way. With a track record of turning challenges into opportunities, Orrin's story is both inspiring and emblematic of the entrepreneurial spirit. GROWTH FOR MSPs In the world of Managed Service Providers (MSPs), growth is the ultimate goal. Many MSPs strive to expand their businesses and reach new heights. One strategic approach to achieve this growth is through acquisitions. But for entrepreneurs looking to sell their MSPs, the decision to join a larger organization like Netsurit isn't just about the deal; it's about finding the right fit and value proposition. In a recent podcast interview, Orrin Klopper, CEO of Netsurit, shed light on what makes Netsurit an attractive option for MSP owners considering the next chapter in their journey. NETSURIT'S CRITERIA Netsurit has a specific set of criteria for MSPs it considers for acquisition. These criteria help ensure that the acquired MSPs align with Netsurit's strategic goals and culture. Here are the key criteria: 1. Leadership Retention: Netsurit places a high value on retaining the key leaders of the MSP being acquired. 2. EBITDA Range: Netsurit typically targets MSPs with EBITDA ranging from $500,000 to $2-3 million. 3. Recurring Revenue: A minimum of 60% recurring revenue in the MSP's business model is a crucial criterion. 4. People-Oriented Culture: Netsurit values MSPs with a strong people-oriented culture. A harmonious and engaged workforce is essential for continued success and scalability. 5. Microsoft Expertise: Netsurit is predominantly a Microsoft-focused business. MSPs that have expertise in Microsoft technologies and serve clients with similar technology needs are a strong fit. THE VALUE OF EQUITY Orrin emphasized that Netsurit's approach to offering equity as part of the deal isn't just a benefit for the seller; it's also a strategy they themselves embrace. This alignment of interests means that Orrin and his team are willing to roll over their equity when the time comes for Netsurit to have a liquidity event (such as bringing in a private equity partner). This underscores their commitment to protecting the culture and essence of the businesses they acquire. CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRIVATE EQUITY PARTNER Orrin acknowledged that this decision is not to be taken lightly. When determining the suitability of a PE firm, Netsurit considers various factors: 1. Alignment of Values: Netsurit looks for a PE partner whose values align with their own culture and philosophy. 2. Performance Track Record: A PE firm's track record in terms of achieving return on investments (ROIs) and managing portfolio companies is a crucial factor in the selection process. 3. Cultural Fit: Maintaining the soul and culture of the acquired businesses is paramount. Netsurit seeks a PE partner who shares this commitment and isn't solely focused on rapid change and cost-cutting. 4. Long-Term Vision: Netsurit values PE partners with a long-term vision for their portfolio companies. In the dynamic world of MSP acquisitions and private equity investments, Netsurit's journey provides valuable insights. The careful consideration of deal structure, the recognition of the value of equity, and the selection of the right private equity partner all play pivotal roles in the success of these endeavors. As the MSP industry continues to evolve, these strategies and insights will remain essential for companies looking to thrive in this competitive landscape. • • • FOR MORE ON ORRIN KLOPPER: https://www.linkedin.com/in/orrinklopper/ https://netsurit.com/en-us/ Corey Kupfer is an expert strategist, negotiator, and dealmaker. When it comes to technology, the key for any organization is uptime. Every company has employees, whether a small business with one or two employees or a large enterprise with thousands. However, they all use technology, so it must be reliable and ensure the company has a strong network. But this is not easy to do. Technology is constantly changing, the needs of the business change, and customer expectations change. And this means companies, regardless of size, must keep their networks up to date. Having a dynamic digital strategy can help a company remain up-to-date. However, the plan must go beyond the fundamentals. It must leverage synergies and create efficiencies while always keeping the customer in mind. This episode discusses how large and small businesses can do this.

“While developed markets may today bear the brunt of cyber breaches, emerging markets are no less vulnerable. Their risks arise from weak processes and governance, the complexity of global supply chains, the need to remain low cost to attract investment, and the rapid adoption of technology without adequate cyber defenses.” Andre Keartland, Solutions Architect at Netsurit, Johannesburg, South Africa, speaks to these realities and offers guidance on managing cyber risks and implementing robust security solutions.Time Stamps00:49 -- We have a lot to talk about. But let's first talk about your professional journey.04:05 -- It would be beneficial if you shared with listeners what we mean by emerging markets. You could talk about that first before talking about the trends.07:20 -- Bottom line, it is my hunch that the cybersecurity phenomenon doesn't discriminate, every country, whether they are part of the emerging block or the developed block, the experiences are kind of similar. What do you think? What are your reactions?09:54 -- Research finds that risks to emerging markets arise from four areas: 1) the complexity of supply chains; 2) the need to remain low cost to attract investments; 3) the rapid spread of technology without adequate availability or awareness of training; and 4) weak regulations. Would you agree with these?15:46 -- Andre, you're based in South Africa. Let's say some of the listeners might be interested in working or starting a venture there. As they evaluate the business scene, the pros and cons, how should they look at cyber security as a risk factor? What would be your message to them?20:57 -- The initial bonding and acquaintance phase is challenging when establishing reliable outsourcing relationships. Andre, any thoughts on that?25:09 -- What can organizations in the developed world learn from organizations managing cybersecurity in emerging markets? 32:05 -- In developing markets, organizations are more alert, more hungry, and more motivated in putting in place the best possible cyber governance practices. So, the sharing of knowledge, the sharing of experiences can be hugely beneficial. Your thoughts?43:20 -- I always like to give my guests the final word. So now is your time for some final thoughts.Memorable Andre Keartland Quotes/Statements"There might be a perception that developed markets aren't as much of a target, which makes them more of a target because it makes it appealing for the attackers.""There's even a trend of attackers doing proof of concept of the threats inside an emerging market before they go mainstream and try to attack Fortune 500 companies in North America.""Threats have no boundaries; once they get going, they affect everybody.""A low cost model often drives economies in the developing markets. That leads to a mentality and an approach where the organizations will then say, well, let's try and cut our costs as much as possible; let's invest in the core of our products, product development, building, the factory. Supporting functions, like cybersecurity, like governance, become de-prioritized.""What I recommend in general, when going into any emerging market, and as somebody who's now done business in many, many different countries, you need to take a view of the legislative framework. You need to understand whether the local legal system enforces things like copyright, intellectual property, and privacy laws; sometimes, those are not high priorities in emerging markets.""The best way to get your skills is to build your skills, get the people in the door, put in place training programs, put in place...

Executing on it often seems daunting. And in fact it can be. As a result, companies end up with a compilation of old and new solutions - which can be less efficient and actually cost them more than taking the leap to fully digitising.Today's guest is going to talk about how companies of all sizes can not only take advantage of cloud-based solutions, but can get greater use out of solutions they are already paying for.Andrew Cohen is the Managing Director of Netsurit, a $30M MSP firm that helps organizations take advantage of the latest technology to enhance their business by providing a roadmap to evolve their IT infrastructure. In this episode Andrew discusses:- Barriers companies face in getting from discussing to implementing digitization in their organisations.- How companies can establish metrics around both people and operational automation.- What companies can do now to add more stability and resilience to their operations.USEFUL LINKS:Asianet Consultants: https://asianetconsultants.comConnect with Andrew Cohen: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-cohen-91945a4/Netsurit: https://www.linkedin.com/company/netsurit/Netsurit on FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/Netsurit/Visit A Seat at The Table's website at https://seat.fm

Having this type of firm employed is the equivalent of having insurance. Netsurit — co-founded by Orrin Klopper — has been offering its award-winning IT, cloud, and security services since 1995.
